Vitamin D3+ K2 Dr. Lynch Q&AUpdated 5 days ago
Question | Answer |
Hi, Dr. Lynch! I read in some of your responses to other posts that it is recommended to take vitamin D3 and Omega-3 AFTER dinner. I wonder why it's recommended that they be taken after dinner, especially since I had previously heard that vitamin D3 can affect melatonin production and sleep when taken in the evening. I also wanted to ask you if taking either Vitamin C, 500 mg, or Quercetin, 200 mg with dinner can block histamine for someone with eczema/food sensitivities, and which one works best for this purpose and is fine to take long-term. Any insight would be so appreciated :) | Hi Liz - Vitamin D can be taken any time of day as long as it's with food. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin so it is best absorbed with fat. For food related reactions, consider:
You may take the vitamin C and quercetin as well. We have those in the supplement called;
These may be taken long term safely. Use the Histamine Digest as needed - and as you continue healing your gut, your need for it will reduce. Do read the document I provided. :) In health, |
Hi Dr. this is a question about zinc .. for some reason questions aren’t being taken under the zinc supplement section. If my zinc level is 74 is that considered low for 32 y/o female? Would either the lozenge or capsule zinc be beneficial to me? Ty!! | Hi Megan - I'm not sure. I don't know what units were used or what type of test. The lab report should mention if it was low or normal or high. I'd call the lab or your doctor. Our multivitamins are typically a great way to support healthy minerals and vitamins which is better foundational support. Consider:

I’m currently taking your Optimal Prenatal Pills and recently experienced an early miscarriage. My vitamin D level is at 38, and I’d like to boost it further before proceeding with IUI/IVF. I’m considering adding a vitamin D supplement, but I’ve noticed some differences between products. Your brand contains 100 mcg of vitamin K2, while other brands offer 180 mcg as menaquinone-7 (MK-7) in their 5000 IU vitamin D supplements. I've also read that too much Vitamin K is not good during pregnancy? Could you explain the significance of these differences, and whether taking the 100 mcg version alongside my prenatal is advisable? Thanks for your guidance! | Hi Narani - I'm sorry to hear this. One thing to note is that an early miscarriage may be due to unhealthy sperm due to sperm chromosomal abnormalities. Women tend to shoulder the entire burden of miscarriage on them - and that's not right. Men need to step up to the plate and improve their quality of health so their chromosomes are viable and healthy during conception and fetal development. Please read this: and this In terms of vitamin K2, there is already a significant amount of K2 as MK7 in our Optimal Prenatal and Prenatal Essentials. I recommend you consider:
Consider this route before IVF. Your partner must also be on board with supplementation. The above plan is quite supportive. Please also read the guides I provided you - and order those labs. I look forward to hearing great news ;) In health, |
Good afternoon, I read some of the Q &A for both the D3 & K2 caps and drops. Please clarify why the drops are MK4 and caps are MK7. Can you also elaborate on the MK7 and answers that discuss clotting? I thought I read that K1 affects clotting, not K2. I have one of the two genetic variants (the F2 gene) for Hereditary thrombophilia so I don't want to take a form of K2 that may promote clotting. So, please clarify if either MK4 or MK7 affect clotting. Thanks. Sue | Hi Sue - The liquid uses MK4 because it's more stable than MK7 when in liquid. K1 is more associated with blood clotting support. K2 as MK7 is favored more by hematologists when a patient is on blood thinners as it has a longer half-life so it's easier to determine how much blood thinners to use. Whereas, MK4 has a shorter half life so it's harder to nail down a dosage of blood thinner medication so using MK4 and blood thinners is not advised. Of course, using any K2 with blood thinners must be approved by your healthcare professional - and monitor blood clotting testing. K2 is not associated with blood clotting directly while K1 is. Hello, Can I take 2 capsules daily (10,000IUs)? Will the K2 portion (200mcg) remain at a safe dosage? Thank you! | Hi Chelsea - Vitamin K toxicity is pretty rare. For adults, you are looking at between 100 - 300 mcg of vitamin K2 per day. Taking 2 capsules per day of Vitamin D3 + K2 is OK for a period of time, and if your vitamin D levels are low or suboptimal. Hope this helps :) |
Can this be taken with the Optimal Multivitamin or Optimal Prenatal? Levels are low for vitamin D. | Hi Jennifer - Absolutely. Yes. Best to take with food - anytime of day or night. In health, |
Hello, can you tell me the differnce between a vitamin K2 that is menaquinone 7, versus menaquinone 4 and 7? Also, does the ratio of Vit D3 to the K2 have an impact? what is ideal ratio? Thank you! | Hi JD Jr - The main difference between K2 as MK7 and MK4 is the duration of activity in the body.
MK7 is useful when one has a bleeding or clotting disorder as it is easier for the hematologist to know how much medication to use. MK4 also predominately comes from animal products while MK7 is usually fermentation. You want to have sufficient K2 to help direct the calcium absorbed by the D3. There is no real known defined ideal ratio. The D3+K2 supplement here has both significant amounts of each nutrient so there are actual nutritional benefits. In health, |
What should I be aiming for in terms of Vitamin D blood levels. My last test showed 62.7 nmol/L. I want to take these for a while and then retest.. what am I aiming for? Thank you. | Hi Annie - That's a question for your healthcare professional. It depends on the person and I do not know your situation. In health, |
Before I order, I need to know, what is the isomer form of your K2 menaquinone-7? Is it cis or trans? Lana Blake | Hello Lana, The vitamin K2 we use is vitaMK7®. Natural Vitamin K2 is part of the Vitamin K family, a group of fat-soluble compounds having hemostatic, anti-osteoporotic, and antioxidant activities. vitaMK7® is an optimal vitamin K2 product, with more than 99% all-trans menaquinone-7 (MK7). Will the K2 in the D3 + K2 vitamin increase the likelihood of blood clots in people with MTHFR, in my case homozygous C677T? | Hi Rhonda - No. Blood clots associated with MTHFR have to do with elevated homocysteine and vitamin D and K have nothing to do with that. Sticky platelet genetic variations may need require more monitoring when it comes to vitamin K. If one does have a genetic platelet clotting dysfunction, you will want to talk with your healthcare professional and monitor clotting times. The best form to use is MK7 form of Vitamin K2 as it has the longest half life making it easier to monitor and adjust. Given that you are homozygous MTHFR C677T, I recommend testing your fasting homocysteine levels. If they are above 8 umol/L, consider Homocysteine Nutrients and take 1 capsule with breakfast to support healthy homocysteine levels.* You want your homocysteine level around 6 umol/L to 8 umol/L You may also consider using a multivitamin such as Multivitamin One and take with breakfast as general support. 1. Why is the K2 in this product MK-7 while the K2 in the drops version is MK-4? 2. Are either of your K2's synthetic? | Hi Emily - The MK7 is in the capsules and not in the liquid because the liquid stable version of MK7 was prohibitively expensive. If I can get a stable and reasonably priced yet high quality MK7 for the liquid, I will switch. In health, |
Is this vegan? | Hi Kelly - It is not because the D3 comes from lanolin from sheep's wool. In health, |
Can my 2 teens ages 15 and 13 take this? They are on growth hormone shots and have been taking vitamin d3 5000iu soft gels daily. What does the addition of k2 provide? I always give vitamin d in the morning as I was told it could affect sleep. | Hi Kimberly - Yes they may. Vitamin D supports healthy calcium absorption. The K2 supports healthy calcium deposition on the bones vs getting stuck in the blood and clogging the arteries. So it's pretty important. Make sure you give this to your kids with some food as they are both fat soluble vitamins. In health, |
Why is this not good for bariatric patients? | Hi Heather - It's because it's a capsule. Usually liquids, lozenges, powders or chewables are best. This capsule is quite small and easy to swallow, however. We do have a Vitamin D3+K2 Drops but it's not as potent as the capsules. In health, |
Is this product gluten free? It say "wheat" free, but wheat is not the only source of gluten. Please verify. Thank you. | Hi Leann - It is gluten-free. We will be improving our graphics to quickly illustrate this point. Thank you for your question. In health, |
I'd like to know about the K2 dosage if I'm needing higher Vit D supplementation (serum levels tested around 30 nanograms/ml.) With the drops you have 100mcg of K2 per 1000IU of D3 (2 drops). However, in the capsules the same 100mcg K2 but this time for 5000 IU D3. Then if i want 1000IU D3 it will mean I'm taking in 200mcg K2.... What's the ideal proportion of K2 to D3 and does this change as the D3 dosage increases? Thank you! | Hi Nicola - The K2 in these supplements is different. The K2 in the liquid is shorter acting so you need more. The K2 in the capsules is longer acting so you need less. I recommend using the capsules of Vitamin D3+K2 as it's easier and gives you the amount you need easily. In health, |
