Optimal Multivitamin Dr. Lynch product Q&AUpdated 3 hours ago

Question
Answer
Hi Dr. Lynch, Thank you for your gut health recommendations. I’m currently exploring whether a targeted multivitamin or a broader treatment approach might be right for me. My primary symptoms include depression, anxiety, cognitive fog, and difficulty staying asleep. I also experience a strange tingling/numbness in my legs on occasion. I’ve tested positive for MTHFR gene mutation. I’m especially interested in mthfr support and protocols that support neurological resilience and emotional clarity, ideally without triggering sensitivities. Thank you again!

Hi Jennifer -

Most of those symptoms you shared align with low serotonin - which could be amplified after ovulation through menses.

Additionally, talk with your doctor about:

  • checking for low iron, B12, folate - looking for anemias
  • fasting homocysteine - you want that around 7 umol/L

Consider:

  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 capsule after breakfast to support a healthy mood and healthy response to stress. Take another capsule before bed to support healthy sleep duration.*
  • Optimal Multivitamin: 2 capsules after a protein based breakfast and possibly another 1-2 with lunch.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • CoQ10: 1 capsule after breakfast or lunch
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving a day to support healthy electrolytes and nerve conduction.*

Can you tell me how this vitamin compares in composition to the chewable option that is out of stock by the same brand?

Hi Coco -

The difference is night and day.

I just updated my team to switch the in stock recommendation to Multivitamin One.
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/multivitamin-one

Optimal Multivitamin is way more comprehensive and supports healthy function in many areas: cognition, mood, eyes, immunity, liver.*

We are out of stock on the Optimal Multivitamin Chewable as I was really focusing on improving the taste profile. It was ok but I wanted it better so that took time. It's not easy improving flavor profiles when using truly natural flavors.

I also made some changes to the Optimal Multivitamin Chewable which delayed production.

I am making it very similar to Multivitamin One so we are renaming Optimal Multivitamin Chewable to Multivitamin One Chewable to better reflect the ingredient profile.

So it sounds like of the 4 supplements you suggested, the only ones I can safely take while on an SSRI and lamotrigine are electrolytes and fish oil. Are there any supplements that can help ease withdrawal symptoms when tapering off of citalopram? And should I stop taking l methyl folate until fully off of everything too? Thanks again, Jen

Hi Jen -

Tapering off of medications requires instructions provided by your prescribing health professional.

Every one is different and not possible for me to state for this reason.

Citalopram is a SSRI as mentioned. So by supporting healthy serotonin levels with Serotonin Nutrients, one could use this as one works with their health professional in tapering their medications.*

Methylfolate could make things better or worse - so hard to say for me at this point. It would be good to find a baseline - but again, need to work with your health professional.

Hi Dr. Lynch, Final question - I'm currently titrating off of citralopram (I'm at 10 mg) and take 25 mg of lamotrigine. Any idea how these supplements interact with the supplements? Thank you for all your answers to my questions! Jenna

Hi Jenna -

Citralopram is a SSRI so it keeps serotonin longer in the brain. You cannot use Serotonin Nutrients until you are off this medication completely and work with your doctor on that.

lamotrigine appears to work by reducing excitation in the brain by limiting glutamate release. Methylfolate may increase excitation in the brain and Serotonin Nutrients may indirectly as well.

Lithium Orotate is very supportive at healthy levels of excitation in the brain.* You may want to work with your doctor about tapering off of lamotrigine if you desire.

Our nootropics are very targeted and effective at supporting healthy levels of neurotransmission.* Thus, it's best to not be using them concurrently with medications - but as you know, one cannot just stop medications and they must talk with their doctor first.

Hi Dr. Lynch, Thank you for answering my question! I ordered the supplements you suggested, and am also wondering if you recommend taking l-methyfolate too? I already ordered it and started taking it, but not sure if it's something to continue taking along with the other supplements. Thank you! Jenna

Hi Jenna -

I was wondering if you had already ordered MTHF :)

Many do once they find out they have a variant in their MTHFR enzyme.

If you are taking it and feeling improvements, great - continue.

If you're taking it and you're feeling more anxious, irritable or headaches, then stop.

You can use it with the other supplements - you would likely only need it some days of the week vs every day of the week.

If you got the lozenge of Methyl B12 with L Methylfolate, then I recommend using a lower amount and seeing how you feel especially once you start the Serotonin Nutrients.

If you feel great on just the MTHF, then you likely don't need the Serotonin Nutrients and you're good :)

Play with it.

Key is knowing how you're feeling before taking the supplements and knowing how they make you feel 20 minutes after taking them.

Then adjust.

Don't take them if you're already feeling great. There will be a time when you wake up in a great mood - on those days - skip the MTHF and skip the Serotonin Nutrients.

Too much of these will backfire.

You'll find the balance!

Hi Dr. Lynch, You asked me earlier what my symptoms are related to MTHFR. I don't know if it's related to MTHFR or not, but I have struggled on and off for years with depression and anxiety. This is the main reason I'm looking into supplementation, to see if they can be of support in reducing depression in particular. Thank you, Jenna

Hi Jenna -

That's useful information - thank you.

MTHFR may contribute and increase one's vulnerability to these things but it's not causative.

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving a day
  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 capsule in the morning with some food and 1 capsule in the evening should you feel you need it. Some people take this once a day and others three times a day.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

Start with this first - over a multivitamin.

Keep me posted - this should help within the first hour or so of taking them. :)

Hi Dr. Lynch, You responded to a question of mine earlier, but I'm not sure how to directly message you and answer your question (you asked me what my symptoms are, which I'd rather share in a more private format). Is there a better way to share that with you, and then I can choose which supplement(s) to order? Thank you, Jen

Hi Jennifer -

This is the only place. Only first names are seen here - and you're welcome to use an alias as well.

Hello, I underwent genetic testing and was told I have the MTHFR mutation (2 copies of the A1298C gene) and I recently ordered L-methyfolate (1 mg). I'm thinking of also ordering the Optimal Multivitamin, which also contains L-methyfolate, and I'm wondering if that will be too much L-methyfolate. Any suggestions on what supplements to order as well? Thank you, Jen

Hi Jen -

MTHFR variations are not a medical condition that you treat.

It's a genetic vulnerability to folate metabolism.

Do not supplement based on your SNPs.

You supplement based on need.

Let me know what symptoms you're struggling with, if any, and we'll go from there.

I don't want to recommend you supplements 'for MTHFR variations' because that isn't the right approach.

I've been working with people with MTHFR variants since 2011 so I know what's the right approach here.

The internet is full of 'influencers' talking incorrectly about MTHFR - only to sell you supplements that actually do more harm than good.

Would Dr. Lynch consider creating a methylated multivitamin without the B6? Our family has had issues with B6 toxicity and neuropathy. Or does the form of B6 he uses in the methylated multi's NOT cause neuropathy? Perhaps the P5P does not cause it, but the HCL version does? I would love to know his thoughts on this. Our kids have had issues related to the MTHFR variants and I don't want to start another issue with B6 toxicity if I can avoid it. Many thanks.

Hi MG -

I don't have plans to do this as I don't think the B6 toxicity is the actual problem.

I suspect the issue is more related to the liver and gut health.

Question concerning my daughter….she is 26 and is such a picky eater…no fruits, no vegetables, drinks plenty of water/milk not much soda and she struggles with headaches and I have always wanted a good vitamin to give some of the nutrients she is missing. Is this a good fit? However, she probably won’t take more than a couple a day. That’s an issue as well is how many will she take (not eight) Thank you !!!!

Hi Tammy -

I bet she's dehydrated and her blood sugar may be all over the place and both contribute to headaches.

Consider:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 to 3 servings a day. Lots of people love the Orange and Berry.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 a lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Multivitamin: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast

This is a great start. If still struggling after implementing, reach out.

Dr. Lynch- Love this vitamin. A full dose is helping my husbands energy and mood. Question is how does THIS pill differ from Multivitamin ONE or Optimal Man? Please help explain so we can decide what is best. Thank you SO much. We love your products.

Hi Lisa -

Awesome to hear ;)

Optimal Man supports healthy testosterone levels in men.

Multivitamin Plus supports overall health in everyone.

What you can do is switch it up.

He can try Optimal Man for a month and see how he does with it compared to Multivitamin Plus.

That said, if he's feeling very good with Multivitamin Plus, then perhaps stay on it. Don't rock the boat :)

If he does want to try Optimal Man, consider 2 capsules with breakfast and 2 capsules with lunch.

I typically use 2 capsules of Optimal Man with my breakfast.

My kids hate all chewable and liquid kids supplements, would a few caps of this be ok for kids? Maybe 1/3 of the adult dose? Desperate to stop the morning fighting about supplements and keep them healthy this fall. They can easily swallow caps.

Hi Lyndsay -

Yes.

Consider:

  • Multivitamin Plus: 1 to 2 capsules with a protein based breakfast
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving a day - I suspect they will love this drink. Orange and Berry are my kids' favorite.

For those that are taking a thyroid medication in the mornings certain vitamins should not be taken within a 4hr window of taking their thyroid meds because it interferes with absorption. That will eliminate taking at breakfast time, is it ok to take starting at lunch time? Also how much would be recommended for a 14yr old who weighs 90lbs?

Hi Sabina -

Yes it is ok to take with lunch. They key is to not take it past this time as it may interfere with the onset of sleep.

For a 14 year old, I'd consider 2 capsules with breakfast and possibly another 1-2 capsules with lunch.

The key is to give multivitamins when they are needed - not simply taking them every day. That is a marketing push by supplement companies.

A supplement is defined as 'to add to or enhance'

So, a multivitamin should be used when one needs to add to or enhance their day. It should not be taken if their day is already going very well with a positive mood and great energy.

The amount an individual needs is based on many factors - not just weight.

How tired are they?
How slow is their thinking?
How low mood are they?
How is their immune system currently - are they fighting anything?
Are they competing actively in a mental or physical competition?
Are they very active?
How stressed out are they?

These are all important factors that must be evaluated before taking a multivitamin - and it literally takes a second to check in mentally this list and how one is feeling before they swallow the capsules.

Can multivitamin plus be taken along with brain nutrients and/or optimal focus?

Hi Ang -

Yes but it's a lot and should be spaced out.

Suggestion:

  • Brain Nutrients: upon waking up in the morning, if experiencing fatigue, brain fog and low energy, consider 1/2 to 1 lozenge. Chew a few times, then allow to slowly dissolve. Hold. Then swallow once it's all water. You should experience a healthy clear head within a minute or so with healthy energy levels. If you feel nothing after 5 minutes, then take another 1/2. Taking too much may lead to a headache.
  • Multivitamin Plus: take 2-3 capsules with a protein-based breakfast (if you feel you need it), 2-3 with lunch IF needing more support (if feeling good, skip it), and if needing more support in the afternoon, 1-2 capsules with a snack.
  • Optimal Focus: if you find yourself scattered during the day and not able to focus on one thing or work well, consider taking 1-2 capsules of Optimal Focus if you find yourself task switching to support healthy focus.* Some days you will be just fine without it and other days you'll really need it.

I would add Optimal Electrolyte into the mix and have one to two glasses a day using filtered water. The first sip you will see why. I highly recommend drinking one glass immediately upon waking.

Hi! I am on a ketogenic diet and IF. So I don't take breakfast. Can I still take the multivitamin in the morning and keep the benefits of IF? Or should I take it with my first meal? Thanks!

Hi Eelkje -

You should always take multivitamins with a meal never on an empty stomach.

The trace minerals will hit an empty stomach like a rock and cause nausea.

Make sure you are consuming plenty of salt on a keto diet as you lose quite a bit.

How much is suitable for children 6 and 10?

Hi Inger -

You would give just 1 capsule of this for them with a protein based breakfast.

We have Kids Multivitamin Chewable as well. I'd use 1/2 to 1 chewable with a protein-based breakfast for them.

I can see the attraction though to using Multivitamin Plus. It's a great idea - and you'd only need 1 capsule with their breakfast.

Hi Pls advice It’s my first time taking this supplement . Can I start with taking min dosage and make my way up or Must take all 8 tablets at once or what’s the minimum tablets daily ? And how to divide consumption?

Hi Win -

Suggested use is exactly that - use as you feel best ;)

Please do start with just 1 capsule with breakfast.

Most people take 2-3 capsules with breakfast. Then if they are tired or need more support around lunch time, they take another 2-3 capsules then.

Some people do take 4 capsules with breakfast and they are good all day.

Others take 4 capsules with breakfast and 1 with lunch.

Others take 4 capsules with breakfast and 4 with lunch.

Do what works best for you.

Know also that each day is different. Some days you will need more support and other days you won't need much at all.

Always take multivitamins with food - and never take within 6 hours of going to bed. You will not sleep if you take too late in the day.

Dr. Lynch
