Lactase DropsDr. Lynch product Q&AUpdated 7 hours ago

Question
Answer
My breastfed baby is 4 weeks old and seems to be struggling with discomfort throughout the day. Very fussy, especially in the evenings. I have oversupply and a forceful letdown. Reading the description, it seems these drops should help? How many should I give and how often? She is almost 10 lb. Thank you!

Hi Sarah -

I agree with you.

Every baby is different but start with a few drops right on your areola just prior to him latching. Or you may drop a couple drops or three onto your finger and have baby get the drops off your finger prior to breastfeeding.

If you're not seeing help here, then add a few drops to bottles of pumped milk and let it sit in the fridge overnight.

I suspect baby should do well with getting the lactase enzyme directly by mouth just prior to eating.

Experiment with how much you use. It's very safe so no issues if using too much just cost.

You may want to start with say 5 drops in the beginning to get relief right away and then taper down and see if a lower amount works.

Couple other considerations:

  • Optimal PC: 1 capsule for you after dinner to supply baby a nice amount of choline for healthy brain development.* It helps you too ;)

Could you tell me what the glycerin in these drop is derived from :) I see it can be from many things, corn, soybean, canola, palm, sunflower etc. Also if the source is Non GMO and free of herbicides? Thank you

Hi Laura,

The Glycerin used in the Lactase Drops is derived from 100% Palm Oil based and produced in Malaysia. It is also free from genetically modified organisms and major food allergens.

t seems these drops cause both my sister and I to have dehydration like symptoms. We used as label directions and we both experienced shriveled hands like from being in a swimming pool too long, drier stools and gut distress, like pre-constipation. We are small framed and low weight, maybe this makes us more sensitive to the glycerin or even the enzyme? If we both didn't have the same thing happen at the same time within days of starting these together we may have not thought it could be these drops. Seems most get great relief, we wish it had done the same for us :(

Hi Laura -

Ask my team for a refund.

That's an interesting response.

Thank you for sharing it.

Consider our Digestive Enzyme capsules instead.

How many drops are recommended for a pint of cottage cheese? THX.

Hi Katherine -

Cottage cheese is mostly fat with potentially lower lactose than whole milk.

  • 2% milk is about 12 grams of lactose per 1 cup
  • Cottage cheese is about 3 grams of lactose per 1/2 cup.

So, per cup, cottage cheese is about 1/2 the lactose content as milk.

I suspect you could use half the suggested use per serving depending on how much cottage cheese you're using.

To make things easy:

  • there are 2 cups in a pint
  • 2 cups of cottage cheese is about 12 grams of lactose
  • 1 cup of milk is about 12 grams
  • so you should be able to put 1 suggested use serving of Lactase Drops per 1 pint of cottage cheese.
  • add the serving size to the pint, then mix thoroughly.

How many drops are necessary to break down 5 grams of Lactose? Can the product interact with the concomitant intake of food supplements [specifically: essential fatty acids, various antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins and minerals; placed in the form of: capsules, soft-gels, various vegetable oils and oleoresins (for the latter I am referring to a product containing Natural Astaxanthin in the form of oleoresin from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis and dissolved in MCT Coconut oil.)?

I had this question too

Hi Pamela -

Lactase Drops will only break down lactose and should not affect any other supplements. If any of your supplements contain lactose then it will simply digest this ingredient.

Whole milk contains about 13 grams of lactose per cup (240mL in USA, 250mL in Australia). 1 US cup is about 1/2 a pint.

This means that 1 pint of whole milk would contain about 26 grams of lactose.

The recommended dosage is to add 7 Lactase Drops to 1 pint (1/2 a litre) of milk and refrigerate for 24 hours. This should break down 70 - 80% of lactose.

If lactose intolerance symptoms persist then refrigerate for longer (48 hours) or add more drops.

Based on these calculations, I'd say that 7 drops would break down about 20 grams of lactose which would be about 2 drops for 5 grams.

Some self-experimentation may be required.

Hope this helps :)

Hi Pamela -

The question is difficult to read.

Here are some points that may help:

  • It's ok to take the Lactase Drops directly by mouth before eating.
  • You cannot heat them up as that will kill them - proteins denature in heat rendering them dead.
  • You may put the drops inside a capsule and take it before eating but it won't be as effective.
  • Keeping the product cold extends the shelf life again as proteins as enzymes are alive and functioning. Heat harms them.
  • Once the product is opened, you may take it on trips with you in the car and your bag but work to keep it from getting hot. Room temperature is ok.
  • You have about 30 days - depending on temperature - once opened.
  • You can take it before or after eating a meal but it's best right in the middle so the food protects it from stomach acid a bit.

Dr. Lynch

How long can an open bottle of Lactase be unrefrigerated while traveling for a long day and still remain effective?

Hi Julie -

High heat, around 125 - 135 degrees F, can cause lactase enzymes to denature.

If you can keep Lactase Drops below this temperature during travel time and refrigerate as soon as possible you should be good.

Hope this helps :).

Hello Dr. Lynch! I ordered the lactase drops for my husband who has developed a sensitivity to cow dairy products. I see that the recommendations are to add 7 drops per pint to your milk, yogurt, etc. and let sit in the fridge for 24 hours. What about for items that you eat in a restaurant - like an ice cream or cheese on a pizza, or for non-liquid items like a block of hard cheese? These are the things he was hoping to be able to take an enzyme before eating to better digest. Could he dispense the drops right into his mouth? Thank you!

Hi Erin -

People have reported taking this to restaurants or a friend's house and putting a couple drops onto a bite of food and experiencing benefits.

I recommend putting a few drops onto a bite of food vs directly into his mouth.

The reason is because the food buffers the lactase enzyme a bit from the acid so it survives better.

To further support him during meals, consider:

  • Digestive Enzymes: take 1-2 capsules before each meal to support healthy digestion and absorption of dairy, carbohydrates, protein and fat.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: take 1 capsule after dinner to support a healthy microbiome.*
  • Gallbladder Nutrients: take 2 capsules before dinner to support healthy bile production and bile flow which is key for healthy liver and gallbladder function.* Eating high fat foods is high stress on the liver and gallbladder. This helps tremendously at the root cause.

Additionally,

Would this help if taken after a meal (if forgot to take before)?

Hi Lilly -

There's a wise saying - it's better in you than in the bottle. ;)

So yes - if you forget - best to just take it after.

You can also use our Digestive Enyzmes - the capsules are quite effective.

Just wondering how I should administer the lactose drops to a breast-feeding infant who does not take a bottle? What is the recommended dosage? Also, do I need to wait between administering the drops and the actual feed? ;

Hi Katie -

You can simply drop 2-3 drops directly on the part of your areola just above your nipple right before your baby latches.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

How would would this best be given to a breast-fed infant (bottle)?

Hi Jessie -

There are a couple ways.

The best option is to drop the required amount of drops of Lactase Drops directly into the bottle. Let it sit overnight in the fridge.

Or you can add them to the bottle and feed right away if needed.

You may also find that you may need to open a capsule of Histamine Digest and place 1/4 capsule in the bottle. Do this right before feeding.

Only add the Histamine Digest if baby is experiencing reflux or vomiting. High histamine is associated with these and Histamine Digest supports healthy histamine levels in your baby's digestive system.

Dr. Lynch

how many bottles in a pack?

Hi Marilyn -

These come individually.

We offer these in 1, 3 or 6 packs.

You can choose. ;)
