Serotonin Nutrients Dr. Lynch product Q&AUpdated 2 hours ago

Question
Answer
Can you take serotonin and brain nutrients with DIM & B complex plus? Also is it okay to have a glass of wine with the serotonin nutrients?

Hi Sharyn -

That's a lot.

I'd introduce them one at a time to see how each one makes you feel.

Taking too many of our supplements like this can increase side effect risk like headaches and irritability.

Alcohol tends to increase serotonin initially - it's after drinking - the next day - that serotonin levels tend to drop - so I would not take Serotonin Nutrients with alcohol but rather the next morning.*

I'm not sure what you're looking to improve so it's harder for me to say what's best for you.

I would not use the B Complex Plus to start.

I suggest you consider:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 a lozenge upon waking in the morning
  • Serotonin Nutrients: take as needed the following morning after alcohol to support healthy serotonin levels.*
  • DIM: can take this after dinner

Any reason why this didn't work as well as Lexopro? I tried taking this before I started Lexopro. I did feel something from this the first night, but it didn't get rid of my worries or anxiety. Just made me slightly calm snd sleepy temporarily. After taking a few days, I didn't feel much. Started Lexopro and felt the effects after a few days on it. Is there maybe additional steps I may be missing that I need to work on to make Serotonin Nutrients work? I tried Brain Nutrients as well, but nothing. I think I have high dopamine and low serotonin based on my symptoms.

Hi Josh -

Lexapro works by keeping serotonin acting longer in the brain.

Serotonin Nutrients works by supporting healthy production of serotonin in the brain and also healthy duration of serotonin in the brain - but not as long as a medication like Lexapro.*

I suspect you have very fast elimination of serotonin which is why you do better with Lexapro.

That tells me a few things:

  • genetics may be a factor
  • inflammation or infections may be a factor
  • low vitamin D3 may be present as D3 is needed to support healthy serotonin synthesis
  • high stress which also depletes serotonin - and this sounds definitely a factor for you

Consider:

  • Stress Nutrients: 3 capsules after breakfast OR
  • Lithium Orotate: 1 capsule after breakfast. I'm leaning towards this one more for you.

Then:

  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 capsule before bed

I think this combination may work well for you.

You may also want to look into Optimal Man and take 2 capsules after breakfast. No need for all 4 capsules for most men.

I know this targets many genes in the Serotonin pathway, but does this also target SLC18a1?

Hi Joseph -

Lithium orotate and gingko biloba are known to support a healthy function of SLC18a1.

I got this information for the StrateGene Report - under the Cleans section of this enzyme.
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/strategene-report

According to my StrateGene Report, my SLC18a1 is increased in function by over 300% compared to wild type due to a genetic variation.

We offer Lithium Orotate in 5 mg capsules.

We have Gingko Biloba in Dopamine Nutrients and also in Optimal Focus (which supports healthy levels of acetylcholine)>*

Hello again Dr. Lynch! I have a question regarding my husband. He gets terrible SAD since our move to Milan, where it rained 200 days last year! He gets very bad joint pain as well. He is generally low on energy and can happily sleep 9+ hour per night. He always has a beer belly although he doesn't consume alcohol and also lost all of his hair as a young teenager. He tends to get very "aggressive" (not physically) if something/someone triggers him. What would you recommend for him? I have an idea based off of other people's Q&As but wanted to ask you. Thanks so much! He has: MAO A R297R +/+ VDR Taq +/+ MTHFR C677T +/- COMT V158M +/- CYP2D6 S486T +/+ CYP2D6 100C>T +/+

Hi Jennifer -

I get your husband - as I live in Seattle ;)

Bad joint pain, low sun and low energy all point to me possibly low vitamin D levels so support his healthy vitamin D levels by taking Vitamin D3+K2 1 capsule after dinner.

Consider these as well:

  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 capsule after a protein based breakfast.
  • Optimal Man: 2 capsules after a protein based breakfast.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Bile Nutrients: 2 capsules before dinner
  • Joint Nutrients: 1 capsule after breakfast and 1 capsule after dinner.

This should support him quite well.

Hi Dr. Lynch, I just did some testing after years of exhaustion and also foggy brain plus low mood/high anxiety, poor sleep quality (I can fall asleep and can't stay asleep). I found I do have multiple SNPs, including fast MAOA, COMT, MTHFR, NOS3, and SHMT. Additionally, I was diagnosed with ADHD in my 2 years ago and have been on adderall for 1.5 years (I quit adderall about 1.5 weeks ago and want to stay off meds). I ordered the B12 with Folinic Acid and Dopamine Nutrients, which I started 2 days ago. I do feel better concentration with the B12, but I don't feel much with the dopamine nutrients. I was considering adding this to my stack, do you have recommendations on what I should try? Thank you!

Hi Shawnna -

Great question and good detail.

If not feeling anything from Dopamine Nutrients, that's typically a sign that one needs to add in Brain Nutrients.

Consider:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1 lozenge upon waking - this has nutrients which helps support healthy nitric oxide, dopamine and serotonin formation.*
  • pause the B12 and folinic acid lozenge because they are in the Brain Nutrients and I don't want you taking too much.
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1-2 capsules after a protein based breakfast
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Multivitamin One: 1 capsule after a protein based breakfast - and take this every other day - not daily.
  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 capsule before bed after a bite of food to support healthy duration of sleep.*

Keep me posted how you're feeling with this.

As you are feeling better, taper or reduce frequency of the various supplements.

Hello! I've been taking 100mg of 5-HTP for 3 months and love it. I'm considering switching to Serotonin Nutrients. What is the dosage of 5-HTP in the blend? I have low serotonin, low GABA, high dopamine and high noradrenaline. My coach recently introduced me to your company and your MF Multivitamin. I love that too! I deal with rage at ovulation and sometimes during menses. My hormone levels are ideal! I get severe full body swelling in my luteal phase. I eat 40-50g animal protein three times a day. I take several other supplements but wondering what you would recommend! Thank you so much. MTHFR C677T (+/-): reduced folate metabolism. COMT V158M (+/-) and VDR Taq (+/+): impaired estrogen and catecholamine clearance, heightened sensitivity to methyl donors. CBS C699T (+/-): potential sulfur sensitivity, excess ammonia, rapid transsulfuration pathway. MTRR A66G (+/+) and MTR A2756G (+/-): increased B12 demand, poor recycling. CYP1B1 and CYP3A4 variants (+/-): estrogen detox pathway sluggishness. SOD2 (+/+): impaired mitochondrial antioxidant defense, especially against estrogen metabolites.

Hi Goldie -

I'm happy to hear that the 100 mg of 5-HTP has been great for you - and the Multivitamin One MF ;)

I would say if you're doing really well with the 100 mg of 5-HTP - don't rock the boat.

Some customers say they do well with 5-HTP but don't do well with Serotonin Nutrients and others say they feel nothing from 5-HTP or some effect but feel better with Serotonin Nutrients.

I'd say go for the switch if you are looking for potentially longer lasting effects as our Serotonin Nutrients is formulated to support not only healthy serotonin production via 5-HTP and B6, but also keep the serotonin longer in the brain at healthy levels via the saffron and maintain healthy levels even more by the added curcumin.*

Due to multiple companies copying my formulations, I sadly cannot say how much 5-HTP is in Serotonin Nutrients. I want to but I have to protect our formulations. They take sometimes years of development only to be copied right away. It didn't used to be like this - it has gotten way worse since social media.

For the Multivitamin One MF that you're taking:

  • only take that when you feel you need it - on mornings after breakfast say when you feel tired or low mood
  • do not take it if you're already feeling good with good energy and a good mood.
  • too much B vitamins, even if methyl free, can contribute to irritability which we do not want.

I would consider adding Optimal Magnesium before bed along with Molybdenum or Calcium D Glucarate - or both - to support healthy sulfur metabolism and healthy estrogen and detoxification.* You can take all of those after dinner if you like to make it easy.

This might be an odd question and perhaps not even the "right" question to ask, but out of Serotonin Nutrients, Dopamine Nutrients, and Brain Nutrients (or a combo of any), which would be a suitable alternative to an ADHD medication like Vyvanse or Adderal? My doc wants to put me on meds but I just came off Lexapro and don't want to be tethered to a medication again if I can help it! Thank you :)

Hi Rae -

I hear you.

I have a couple documents for you to read which will help you make an informed decision - and also know how to use the supplements as you need.

I suggest you consider a combination of:

  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule after breakfast
  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule after breakfast

Start with just one supplement first - and I'd start with Dopamine Nutrients first - by itself.

If you feel nothing from taking Dopamine Nutrients, this is a sign that you need to stack Brain Nutrients with it at the same time.

If you feel nothing from Dopamine Nutrients, add in 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients with 1 capsule of Dopamine Nutrients.

See how you feel.

If you feel great, then good to go with this stack.

If you feel you need additional healthy support of focus, then stack:

  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule
  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge
  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule

Here are the documents to read:

In addition to the nootropics above, I highly suggest:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving a day to support healthy hydration as hydration is key for cognitive function and the added creatine, magnesium, potassium and taurine are key for this.*
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy neurotransmission.*

These should be life changing for you :)

Could this be helpful to use when dealing with OCD? Can an 11yo child take this?

AH -

An 11 year old may use this yes. They may do best with 1/2 a capsule mixed in a bit of food. Start with this first compared to a full capsule.

Hi AH -

OCD is associated with low serotonin levels.

Hello! How many capsules can be taken daily? I am mainly taking this product due to low serotonin in gut .. I think it is helping me. I take one in the AM and one before bed. Would taking one during the day also help? Or is 3 capsules too much? Also, when bottle is finished .. how long indefinitely can I take this product? Ty!!!

Hi Meghan -

Great question. Serotonin Nutrients is taken as needed. The duration of serotonin activity can be quite fast in some people and slower in others.

One may take 3 day comfortably if needed.

If you need support for healthy bowel movements, then consider:*

  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 - 3 capsules per day as needed to support healthy mood, sleep and bowel movements.*
  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner to support healthy bowel movements.*
  • Optimal Magnesium: 1 capsule before bed to support healthy bowel movements and sleep.*
  • Digestive Enzymes: 1-2 capsules with each meal as needed especially if you know you're eating foods that tend to be heavier for you to digest.*

Dr. Lynch

I read that 5 hyp can deplete dopamine. Does this product address that?

Hi A. H -

Long term with a low protein diet, yes - could cause issues. However, if one is eating sufficient protein and taking cofactors, and using Serotonin Nutrients on an as needed basis vs daily for months, one is supported.

Here is a paper talking about long term use of ONLY 5-HTP -
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3415362/

Serotonin Nutrients supports healthy serotonin levels primarily - but the added saffron also supports some of the healthy dopamine levels as well.*
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1043661821005478

One can combine both Serotonin Nutrients and Dopamine Nutrients if needed. I'd do 1 capsule of each. Few people need this combination so don't start with this.

Start with just Serotonin Nutrients to see how you do with this by itself.

Dr. Lynch

I just want your input. I did a urine neurotransmitter test, OATS Test, and Biomesight gut test in the past. All indicates my serotonin was high, also quinolinic and kyuronic levels. With my serotonin being high, does it mean I should not take serotonin nutrients or is it that its possible thst its not being activated at receptor level? I do have some forms of ocd a bit, but I have more anxiety, social anxiety, worry a lot and fear of the future and risk with lack of being able to concentrate with my mind racing.

Hi Mike -

You have valid points.

Based on your symptoms, I do feel that Serotonin Nutrients, and possibly Lithium Orotate, could be useful for you in supporting a healthy mood.*

The high quinolinic acid and kynurenine levels are associated with elevated immune activation - so could be an infection or physical stressors or both.

I'd look also into:

  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule each day after any meal of the day. Measure your D3 levels, too
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 to 1 lozenge each morning upon waking and possibly another 1/2 later in the day - you'll know if you need it or not.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner to support a healthy inflammatory response.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner to support a healthy microbiome which is where a lot of imbalanced OAT markers stem from.*

Hello! Does 5htp cause hair loss/shedding? I’ve read nootropics can do this. Any thoughts? Ty!

Hi Megan -

I've not heard this and a quick internet search demonstrates confusion on this topic.

I cannot think of a mechanism as to why serotonin support would increase hair loss.

I do know that hormone support can trigger hair loss due to increased DHT - as can anxiety.

I've not heard any of our customers using Serotonin Nutrients reporting hair loss. I use Serotonin Nutrients now nightly before bed and my hair is good ;)

Hello! Serotonin nutrients (I suspect the 5-htp) has totally flatlined my libido. It does seem to be helping with my mood concerns but I need to maintain some kind of libido. Is there a spacing you’d recommend (instead of daily)? Or might pairing this with dopamine nutrients possibly help? Unfortunately I made my purchase of serotonin nutrients so I can’t return it.

Hi Carrie -

Serotonin is known to do this to libido.

Definitely need to space it out. It will still be helpful to you - just need to space it out.

Consider:

  • Serotonin Nutrients: pause for now. Note how it made you feel and how you felt before taking it -when you desired a healthy mood.*
  • Testosterone Nutrients: consider 1-2 capsules after breakfast or dinner to support healthy testosterone levels and libido.* Women need support here as well. Read the reviews. Testosterone also supports a healthy mood.*
  • Dopamine Nutrients: could be useful but since Serotonin Nutrients helped your mood, and flatlined your libido, I suspect Testosterone Nutrients may be better suited for you.

After pausing Serotonin Nutrients and using Testosterone Nutrients for a bit, see how you're doing.

You may want to add in Serotonin Nutrients on an as-needed basis. If you're feeling good and your mood is good, then don't use it.

Thank you for answering my previous question about taking for my gut .. just to follow up and ask one more! This kind of makes me nervous to take due to my hormones and mostly everything else in my body seems to be working normal except the gut issue.. Can I stay on this indefinitely? Should I stay on indefinitely? I’m scared to start taking then stopping and everything else will be out of wack mentally when I don’t seem to have a too much of a problem with stress, anxiety, depression, etc. I never needed medication. If I stop taking after gut issue is healed will this just slowly leave my system and not have a lingering issues? Ty in advance!!

Hi Megan -

Supplements are designed to support you when you need them and pause when you don't.

If you feel they are supporting you, then keep going.

If you feel you are doing really well and want to taper down or skip a day or two to see how you're doing without, that is a good strategy.

The key is to reduce supplementation when you feel good as too much supplementation can lead to side effects due to nutrient excess or overworking a particular organ system.

If you feel good and you skip one day and you don't feel as good as you did yesterday, then that's a sign you should keep going with the program.

Health is a moving target - as you fix one thing, something else may show up later or the same thing.

If anything makes you nervous, listen to that as you know your body best.

Hi Dr! I recently got a test done and one thing it says is my gut serotonin production is low. Would this product be helpful? Even if it’s just for this reason and not for the other uses intended for? And if yes, how would I take this supplement to help with my gut serotonin problem. Ty!!!

Hi Meg -

Yes, this would be great!

Serotonin Nutrients supports healthy serotonin levels full body - which includes the gut.*

As you can see in the product description, low serotonin levels are associated with slow transit time and constipation. By supporting healthy serotonin levels, healthy bowel movements are possible.*

Start with 1 capsule any time of day or night - and you may need to take it twice daily at first - see how you do with 1 capsule first.

Dr. Lynch

What would dosing be for a 7 year old boy? I think this sounds like the right supplement for him. Rigid personality, struggles with transition/change, quick temper and very intense feelings. He's high energy and very social and intelligent. Prone to loose stools. He's currently taking kids multivitamin MF. Any other recommendations? He won't drink optimal electrolyte. Thank you! Hoping this helps.

Hi SS -

I suspect this is more microbiome related - like yeast - rather than low serotonin.

Yeast can impact serotonin and neurotransmission.

Consider:

  • Saccharomyces Boulardii: 1 capsule after dinner (can open capsule and put on a bite of food if needed)
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner (can open capsule and put on a bite of food)
  • Histamine Digest: 1 capsule with foods that are known to aggravate his moods - best to limit those foods but sometimes you don't know - and this will help identify.
  • Limit high histamine foods
  • read this - https://www.seekinghealth.com/blogs/education/histamine-intolerance

We have 3 new electrolyte flavors coming out which are pretty fantastic. He'll enjoy at least one of those.

for the Kids Multivitamin MF:

  • pause the supplement for a few days to see how his temper is.
  • too many nutrients may aggravate mood. He may just need less nutrients.
  • after pausing for a few days, evaluate his mood.
  • then, give him 1/2 of what you were giving him before - and 1/2 as frequently - so if giving 1 chewable daily - give him 3 days off, then 1/2 a chewable every other day.

Hi! I have used serotonin nutrients for my 9 year old son a few times for obsessive thoughts and to help him sleep duration. He is an early riser no matter what but wants to sleep in longer. The interesting thing is, I usually give it 2 days in a row and then stop. On the second day, he has gotten ballantitis every time I have done this. I’m so curious why this is, and how I can support what his body is telling me. Is it yeast? Maybe from the inositol? I gave Saccaromyces boullardii after dinner tonight bc he does tell me that probiotic helps with his bowel movements when I give it. Otherwise he takes probiotic histiminX. He also takes your fish oil, optimal electrolyte, and we pulse the kids multivitamin MF. He does take lysine sometimes bc he gets canker sores. He is gluten intolerant so we don’t eat gluten. Maybe we should cut dairy again…. I have pulsed bile nutrients in the past when he tells me his bowels are lighter and bc of geographic tongue. So, where do I pivot if serotonin nutrients are helping him but also causing this balantitis problem? Thank you!!

Hi Stephanie -

Great question - well written.

A few things here:

  • Wanting to sleep in longer - he may not need to. Consider getting him a tracking device like a Garmin watch. I use the Garmin Venu 3 as do my three sons. We love it. This way he can monitor his sleep score, HRV, steps taken, heart rate - and I don't use bluetooth ever to connect to my phone. No need. So it doesn't emit EMF from my understanding.
  • Serotonin Nutrients: consider switching to Lithium Orotate. I say this because the inositol could be feeding the yeast which would be aggravating his ballanitis.
  • Saccharomyces Boulardii: use 2 capsules after dinner each night and do for a couple months.
  • Limit carbohydrates and sugar and soda as these will feed the yeast.
  • he may need Oil of Oregano or other antifungal nutrients. Designs for Health has a strong one so make sure to take it after a dinner.

Can serotonin nutrients be taken along with dopamine nutrients brain nutrients and optimal focus?

Hi Kristie -

That's a lot. Rarely that is ever needed.

If anything, different days or times of the month may require different support.

Do I have all 4 at my home? Yes.

Have I ever taken all 4 at once? No.

Have my son who are in college studying hard? Yes. Was it helpful? They said it was pretty nuts and had very lucid dreams but did report they studied well - and did experience a slight headache.

Read the product page on each one - and we have 'Guides' for Dopamine and Focus -

Hi can you please provide the rationale of not taking alongside ssri? Thank you Kristen Gagnon DCN, RD, LDN

Hi Kristen -

Serotonin Nutrients supports healthy serotonin*:

  • production
  • activity
  • duration

Thus, if one is taking a SSRI alongside Serotonin Nutrients, it will be excessive and contribute to significant side effects.

Dr. Lynch

Hello, how do I know if I need Serotonin or Dopamine Nutrients? I have issues listed on both products.

Hi Laurie,

It may be that you are low in both if you have symptoms associated with both of them.

My suggestion would be to try Brain Nutrients first. Brain Nutrients supports healthy biopterin levels, which are needed for both serotonin and dopamine production in the brain.†

Below are the main differences between low serotonin and dopamine:

  • Typically, serotonin is more indicated with symptoms of low mood, poor sleep, gut issues like constipation or IBS
  • Dopamine is more indicated with symptoms of low mood, lack of motivation, low energy

If one of these scenarios resonate more for you, then try that supplement first.

However, you can take Serotonin Nutrients and Dopamine Nutrients together if they are both needed. If this is the case, I recommend:

  • Start with one supplement first and wait at least 3 days before introducing the next supplement. This will help you determine the benefits or non-benefits you experience with each of them.
  • Start with low doses. This could be 1/2 - 1 capsule.
  • Take Dopamine Nutrients earlier in the day and Serotonin Nutrients later in the day.

Hope this helps :)

Hi! I just came off Lexapro and am looking for ways to support my mood naturally. I'm wondering if Serotonin Nutrients or Brain Nutrients would be a better bet (or both?). My symptoms before going on Lexapro were low mood, no motivation, depression, anxiety, worrying thoughts, feels like low norepinephrine and dopamine as well. Thank you! :)

Hi Jess -

I hear you.

I actually have a very solid webinar explaining this in our Membership area.

I highly recommend becoming a Member so you can access this webinar - and all the other ones - and future ones :)
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/membership

Lexapo is a SSRI as you know which does work by keeping serotonin levels longer in the brain.

Lexapro does not make more serotonin - it just keeps what you have in the brain longer.

Consider:

  • Testosterone Nutrients: it's actually helping a number of people with exactly what you're describing. Consider 1 capsule after dinner. It's a 4 capsule serving size but start with 1 as that may be all you need to support healthy mood, motivation, libido and a sense of calm.*
  • If you feel you need more support, consider taking another capsule after a protein based breakfast.

Give this a month and let me know how it's supporting you.

If it is, awesome!

If not, we can work on trying either Serotonin Nutrients or Dopamine Nutrients - you're right on the border there - which is also why I'm learning more towards testosterone support.

My 11 year old suffers with abdominal migrains, I read about serotonin being involved. Could I try this or is there anything else that might help? Currently he is having the kids multi vitamin. He's been against electrolytes but I will persist as I know that will help.

Hi Rachel

Low serotonin levels are associated with migraines.

Consider:

  • Serotonin Nutrients: take 1 capsule after a protein based breakfast to support healthy serotonin levels.*
  • Brain Nutrients: 1/4 to 1/2 lozenge upon waking most mornings to support healthy serotonin levels.*
  • Histamine Digest: 1 capsule with meals to support healthy histamine levels.* High histamine is associated with migraines.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: supportive as it has creatine, taurine, magnesium which are essential for healthy neurotransmission.* Sip 1 serving in a glass of filtered water upon waking most mornings

I hoped to take this to improve my deep sleep. I used to get around an hour according to my Oura ring. Since starting it, it has dropped to 20 to 30 minutes for the past few weeks each night. I haven’t changed any other supplements. I also take your adrenal cortex, methyl b12, and magnesium. Thoughts?

Hi Samantha -

Genetics are unique with serotonin.

Consider altering when you take the Serotonin Nutrients.

Some thoughts to consider:

  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule after a protein based breakfast ONLY ON DAYS where you wake up feeling tired or wake up way too early or woke up to pee a couple times as it supports healthy cortisol levels.*
  • Methyl B12: take after breakfast
  • Magnesium: which form are you taking? Magnesium Glycinate may be supportive of deep sleep due to the additional glycine in it to support healthy GABA levels.* Take before bed. We have this in powder form. Simply mix in an ounce of water and drink before bed.

If you're already taking the Serotonin Nutrients in the morning, then pause it.

I'm also wondering if you're taking the Adrenal Cortex too frequently - and possibly a less ideal form of magnesium.

Hello, I am struggling with Mast Cell Activation and Histamine Intolerance as is my sister. I have had relief of many symptoms with LDN, SPMS, KPV Peptide and most recently 1 capsule of Histamine Nutrients. I had to stop each of them however due to a side effect of a very flat emotional feeling. I read about the histamine serotonin connection and am curious if each of these lowered my serotonin when lowering my histamine levels. I do take 20 mg of Citalopram daily for anxiety as well. Maybe that is a factor. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Maybe Serotonin Nutrients would help?

Hi Jessica -

I'm glad you're doing better.

Instead of adding in a supplement, I'd consider evaluating what you're taking and possibly stop some of them or reduce the dosage with your prescribing health professional.

Here's my thinking:

  • You had high histamine levels and MCAS.
  • high histamine can contribute to symptoms of anxiety
  • Now you are feeling way better in terms of histamine intolerance
  • As you lowered your histamine intolerance and MCAS, you felt more emotionally flat
  • high serotonin levels can contribute to this flat feeling - and so can low histamine levels.

I suggest you talk with your prescribing healthcare professional and consider:

  • reducing or stopping Citalopram
  • only take Histamine Nutrients on an as needed basis and not daily
  • continue LDN but possibly need a lower amount

I've been using optimal sleep II and it was really helping. It seems to be discontinued and the article on your site says serotonin nutrients is the recommended replacement. Can you recommend how/when to take this for sleep?

Hi Lindsay -

It was a great formula. People just didn't buy it. I likely didn't put enough effort into educating about it.

Optimal Sleep II worked by supporting healthy glutamate levels. If glutamate levels are elevated, then the mind will be racing.

What I actually recommend you taking is Lithium Orotate before bed.

I will update the article. I didn't write it so I'll review it now and get it updated.

Lithium Orotate was in Optimal Sleep II along with Magnesium.

Consider:

  • Lithium Orotate: 1 capsule before bed
  • Magnesium Plus: 1 capsule before bed
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

The D3 and Fish Oil are supportive nutrients needed to support healthy levels of inflammation. If inflammation is high, then glutamate is high and thus sleep is negatively affected.

Hi there, We have a 5 year old boy (50 pounds) that has ADHD. Very hyper/impulsive and emotional issues and social anxieties. Overall, he is happy and not aggressive. I am wondering if a combination of Serotonin Nutrients, Kids Optimal Focus, Folinic Acid Lozene, and Lithium Oro. would be a good combination to calm his nerves and help regulate some issues? He goes to a chiropractor once a week too. It's possible he has autism and MTFHR (lip tie/tongue tie as baby and speech delay). He currently takes the Mary Ruth morning and night liquid multivitamin, Bio Challenge Gcel for intracellular glutathione, and Standard Process tuna oil and multizyme. I worry about him not detoxing correctly. We are trying to help him relax and regulate as much as we can before he starts Kindergarten. Any help is much appreciated!

Hi JG -

I hear you.

Need to support without over supporting.

I'm suspecting that he may be already over supplemented which is contributing to his symptoms.

I'd consider stopping all supplements for him to reach a natural baseline and then see where he is.

Often times we supplement trying to support our kids or ourselves and it's those very things which are driving the symptoms.

Also, he may have needed those supplements at one point but now he doesn't or he doesn't need them as much.

Consider:

  • stopping the glutathione
  • stopping the multiivitamins day and night
  • stop the tuna oil and multizyme

I know it sounds scary to do this but it's important to rule these out as contributing factors to his anxieties. I see it all the time.

If you stop all of these, and after a week of stopping, he is still struggling with the same symptoms, then consider introducing these ONE every other couple days and can combine if you see beneficial results.

  • Kids Optimal Focus: 1/4 to 1/2 a chewable after breakfast. Then 1/4 to 1/8th the next day and then skip the 3rd day. Then see how he's doing. If you see benefit, great. If you see benefit and he regresses after you stop, give him a small amount again. You won't need much. On good days, do not give it to him as he won't need it.
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/4 lozenge upon waking every other day.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1/2 a serving in his sippy cup or water bottle with filtered water.
  • no other supplements.

Dr. Lynch, I have been trying to figure out for the last 4-5 months why I wake up at night after 3-4 hours of sleep unable to go back to sleep and if I do I wake/sleep several times. The sleep I do get doesn't feel deep or rested. I wake up with burning feet and feeling agitated all over...almost like a vibration feeling which I had attributed to my diagnosed peripheral neuropathy (non-diabetic). I had thought maybe I was dumping histamines and that is what was waking me up. I have been taking Histamine Digest, Histamine Nutrients and X during the day and have started using them in the evening/bedtime. Then I added turmeric and ginger. I am still waking up. It seems that I am already taking most everything in Serotonin Nutrients separately except the 5-HTP. I also get 50 mg of B6 in the mornings from a MTHFR supplement. I am MTHFR homozygous 677T and have one copy of AOC1 gene. The other dirty genes you mentioned in your book have not been tested. Help?! I just cannot figure this out. Thank you

Hi Martha -

I hear you.

50 mg of B6 is a lot. Not sure why you need that much.

Consider stopping all the separate ingredients that are found in Serotonin Nutrients and use that one formula before bed.

Consider:

  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 capsule before bed
  • Phosphatidyl Serine: 1-2 capsules before bed
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • CoQ10: 1 capsule after breakfast
  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule in the morning after breakfast if the Serotonin Nutrients and Phosphatidyl Serine aren't working - add this in.

Also before bed:

  • put your phone on airplane mode
  • turn off the wifi in the house
  • sleep in a cooler room with fresh air - open window if you can

Hi Ben, I ordered several supplements for myself and son recently. I hope you can provide additional guidance. I’m 40 and have been taking 25 mg adderall for about a year. I often can’t focus at work, miss key information from my boss that she swears she told me, suffer from OCD tendencies, and have significant internal anxiety - dry mouth, racing heart, internal tremors, can’t fall asleep and can’t stay asleep. I’m exhausted everyday. I’m overly caffeine sensitive and the ADHD meds help calm my brain, but my body feels bouncy inside. I can’t catch my breath or breathe deeply. I feel like a mess, honestly. I have 1 copy of C677T and found out about 12 years ago when I lost 3 pregnancies - one in the 2nd trimester. I started taking your hydroxob12 in the morning. Should I be taking the lozenge b12/methylated instead? I also started on serotonin at night, and in the morning a combo of glutathione lozenge (1/2), histaminX with protein breakfast, and your electrolyte powder. In addition, I ordered two air purifiers that you recommend. We live in WA and I’m sensitive to mold. I’m not sure what it is but after taking these supplements, I’m more tired and anxious than ever. Any idea why? Do I need adrenal/cortisol support? I also crave sugar and can’t get through a full workout. I have a high pressure job. My son (13) was diagnosed with severe ADHD years ago and it seems to run in our family (my dad, grandpa, etc.) He’s bonkers without meds, although we relied on OT for quite a few years before desperately turning to meds when he was 10. When taking meds, he’s focused but down and seems depressed. He doesn’t like to talk or do anything and his friends tell him he’s more fun off meds. When he’s off the meds, he talks non-stop, makes sounds with his mouth, acts impulsively (picking on his brother and terrorizing our dogs.) It’s devastating to everyone around him. He’s a great guy and funny, but hurts others with his impulsivities. He doesn’t focus in school or do well academically and we just want to help him. I started him on glutathione lozenges (full) and dopamine nutrients (1 capsule). This might have been a mistake. I think I should have done optimal focus? I hope you can make recommendations for us. Thanks. Appreciate you!

Hi Jen -

It's not easy as there are many factors at play - especially when adding in hormone fluctuations, environmental exposures, foods and life stressors.

The Serotonin Nutrients for you is likely contributing to more intense feelings for you especially if you're currently taking the Adderall.

Time of month also matters for women. Right before ovulation, your estrogen levels peak and that may be your most focused time as estrogen and dopamine work together. After ovulation, estrogen can drop hard and your dopamine drops and so does your attention and focus - and mood.

Guys focus can plummet if they are low testosterone.

It may be best to order a StrateGene Report, see what genetics are running in your family and then working with ElizmaLambert.com with a consultation.

In the meantime, you can do the basic fundamental support which is key:

  • Glutathione Lozenge: 1 upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and another midday
  • Bile Nutrients: 2 capsules before dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 after dinner
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Pre-Workout Nutrients: take a full serving 30 to 60 minutes before your workout. It's non stim so it won't contribute to anxiousness but it will support healthy performance during your workout.*

The Adderall is going to complicate everything and cause an internal anxiety.

You can talk with your doctor about getting off of it. It's out of your system in about 24 hours.

Adderall supports dopamine, norepinephrine AND serotonin in the brain - by a lot. So it's no wonder you feel like this.

You're tired, wired and anxious because of too much.

You need more gentle support.

If and when you're off of Adderall, consider:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking and another 1/2 to 1 if needed at work
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1-2 capsules in the morning on days you feel you need more support for healthy motivation, learning, focus and memory.*

For your son:

  • I don't think you did a mistake. It's a good idea to try and see what works well for him.
  • If he is more irritable when taking Dopamine Nutrients, either give him 1/2 the amount you did or it's not right for him.
  • If he is more focused and motivated when taking Dopamine Nutrients, then perfect.
  • Talking non-stop, interrupting and stressing out with exams can be associated with low acetylcholine. In this case, he may do well supporting healthy acetylcholine levels with Kids Optimal Focus or Optimal Focus. 1 chewable or 1 capsule is a great start.
  • The glutathione is a great idea as is the electrolyte

Keep me posted.

Dr. Lynch, I have been taking Serotonin Nutrients since mid-December. It helps my sleep tremendously but I have developed a vibration feeling in my feet and muscle twitching. I am wondering if it could be caused by one of these ingredients. A few years back, my b vitamins showed very high b6. Could any of this be contributing? Thanks!

Hi Amanda -

The amount of B6 in Serotonin Nutrients is not that high.

The synergy of the ingredients may be contributing.

Since you have been taking Serotonin Nutrients since mid-December, take a pause for a few evenings and see how you do.

I also highly recommend you add in magnesium and potassium to support muscle contraction.

Consider:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving in the morning upon waking and another midday
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

I talk about following the Pulse Method a lot
https://www.seekinghealth.com/blogs/education/pulse-method

Consider 4 nights on and 3 nights off.

The beneficial support from Serotonin Nutrients may have been really needed for the first couple months. Now, since you have been more balanced due to it, you may only need it every other night or just a few nights in a row. Every other night may be best.

Suggestions for our 11 yr old son (90 lbs). Cancer survivor, diagnosed at 2, chemo until 4 1/2. On going appointments and continued health issues over the years and intense treatment have caused severe anxiety, medical trauma. Anxiety has morphed into other areas over the years, Especially school. He has developed some obsessive behaviors. Anxiety is crippling at times. Overall anxious, but also super fun, athletic, smart, leader. Any suggestions. Wondering about serotonin nutrients? He is not currently taking any medications. Thank you so much, We appreciate it!

Hi Katie -

Happy to hear your son is improving overall.

I like your thinking here.

Let's make a few other suggestions to consider:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 a lozenge upon waking and another 1/2 midday possibly if he feels a need. He'll know after he experiences what it feels like when he needs it. Chemo is very prooxidative and he needs some antioxidant support now.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1/2 a serving upon waking and another 1 serving mixed in a glass or water bottle of filtered water and drunk throughout his school day. Berry and Orange are the most popular. Dehydration is a big deal from these past treatments and a dehydrated brain doesn't work well. This supports healthy hydration.*
  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1/2 a capsule in a bite of food with his protein based breakfast. Let's start here. He may need the full one but let's start with 1/2. He may need another 1/2 before bed or after dinner. See how he does.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner

This should help a lot and within the first 24 hours.

Keep me posted. We may need to make some tweaks.

Tammy P. I started not sleeping with bad news in the family. I can go to sleep with melatonin but wake up 3-4 hours later and I’m up the rest of the night. And I have no appetite.. I have lost to much weight. I tried magnesium glycinate but can’t tell that it helps. I tried antidepressants but couldn’t tolerate them. Do you have any suggestions on what I should take.

Hi Tammy -

Sorry to hear you're not sleeping due to unfortunate news.

I like your choice here.

Consider:

  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule with any meal of the day to support healthy sleep and a healthy response to stress.*
  • Stress Nutrients: 3 capsules with your breakfast to support a healthy response to stress.*
  • Lithium Orotate: if after 30 minutes of taking Stress Nutrients, you still feel you need more support, then take 1 capsule in the morning with breakfast to support a healthy mood.*
  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 capsule before bed with a bit of food to support healthy duration of sleep.*
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking in the morning and another midday

This should help quite a bit. Keep me posted if needing to make some adjustments.

Hello, I received guidance from you already, and here is what you suggested to start with: • Glutathione Plus: 1/2 upon waking • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and another 1-2 during the day • Joint Nutrients: 1 capsule in the morning upon waking and 1 before bed. I believe this will support a healthy inflammatory response.* • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast and take only if you wake up too early and too tired as it supports healthy energy levels.* If you wake rested and sleep through the night, don't take it. • reduce caffeine intake • Stress Nutrients: take 3 in the morning to support a healthy response to stress so your afternoon cortisol levels will be balanced.* • Bile Nutrients: 2 to 4 capsules before dinner to support a healthy microbiome in your small intestine - high levels are associated with SIBO.* • Histamine Nutrients: 2 capsules before bed to support healthy onset of sleep • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner I'm still waiting for some of the supplements to arrive so I haven't implemented everything yet. I'm dealing with SIBO, CIRS, mixed up cortisol and menopause. I am having a VERY hard time regulating carb cravings (turns into a binge and then I feel gross) and I'm still constipated. I've tried carnivore, but it is very hard to adhere to, and when I try to loosen up a bit and go more paleo I go off the deep end with sugar and non-paleo GF carbs. Sleep is ok, but I'm not feeling rested when I get up and it's very hard to get myself out of bed in the morning. I've only had the Adrenal Cortex for a day and took one today and I didn't notice a huge difference. I'll try again when needed and see what happens on that. I heard you suggest Seratonin Nutrients for carb cravings and constipation, but when I read the description under Dopamine Nutrients, it feels like that fits more with my mood/lack of motivation. What is the best way to view these symptoms and should I take either Seratonin or Dopamine?

Hi Jen -

It does sound like Dopamine Nutrients is more in line with what you need.

Both dopamine and serotonin deficiency can trigger binging.

The Adrenal Cortex: you'll need to take it more than just 1 day. I suspect you will need it a few days in a row at least - possibly an entire week or even two if you felt nothing from one serving. I'd continue using this.

I'd pause the Glutathione Plus Lozenge for now and swap it out for Brain Nutrients and take 1/2 to 1 lozenge upon waking - then take another 1/2 to 1 lozenge midday.

Bile Nutrients: take 4 before dinner.

Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule with your protein based breakfast.

Make these adjustments and check back in after a week ;)

Dr. Lynch, My 83 year old mom just had knee replacement surgery. She developed a blood clot after surgery and was prescribed Xarelto. She's been taking 30 mg for the last month but decreases to 20 mg tomorrow. She has become VERY depressed on this medication. No energy, no appetite, depressed low mood. It could be a combination of the recovery and the meds. I'm trying to determine if this supplement will help her bounce back from all this. I've never seen her this low in my life. She isn't on any other medication...she is very healthy. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Sarah

Hi Sarah -

I'm helping out by answering some of the questions.

Anticoagulants do have the ability to affect serotonin release from platelets which may affect serotonin levels in the body. So it's possible that the medication is contributing to your mother's low mood.

Taking anticoagulants together with SSRIs (medications that increase serotonin levels) may increase the risk of bleeding, esp. in the first 30 days of taking them together.

Serotonin supplements such as 5-HTP do not seem to carry the same risks as SSRIs overall unless taken in very high doses.*

But since there are interactions between serotonin itself and anticoagulants, it's best to discuss this with your mum's healthcare practitioner first while she's on the anticoagulant.

Once off, she can definitely take it at 1 capsule a day.

Her low mood can also be the effects of anesthesia used during the procedure. I suggest:

  • Hydroxo B12 with Folinic Acid: 1 capsule per day
  • Glutathione Plus capsule or lozenge: 1 capsule/lozenge per day. The lozenge is a lower dose for those who may be sensitive to higher doses.

Let us know how she goes :).

If I give my son half a brain nutrient and then after breakfast a 1/4 of a seratonin support capsule, around an hr later he has bursts of what I call crazy happy. He will be giggling, charge at me to tickle me but not hear or stop when I ask him to (if he's being to strong and hurting). This will last on and off for hours. He seems very sensitive to the seratonin support. I prefer crazy happy to depressed and not wanting to live but he's definitely not balanced. Also, can the seratonin support and dopamine support be given at the same time?

Hi Ellen -

You're right. He's getting too much.

A few things can help here.

  • pause the Brain Nutrients at the moment OR the Serotonin Nutrients. Just give one or the other.
  • Consider using only 1/4 of Brain Nutrients as well vs 1/2.
  • take him to the park after breakfast and let him go nuts
  • you can stack the Dopamine and Serotonin but I wouldn't do this for him - possibly for you.

This should make a big difference.

Hi Dr., I reached out before with my panic, derealization and brain fog possibly occurring from dysbiosis (barely any good gut bacteria and extreme inflammation). I should have informed you before that I am planning to conceive in the near future. I realized serotonin and lithium both should not be taken pregnant. Are there any other products that would work for my situation and pregnancy? Thank you

Hi Sammie -

I'd proceed forward with what I shared with you currently.

I do not recommend getting pregnant at this time - not until you are in a good state.

It shouldn't take long.

Let's get you there first - then work on pregnancy.

You do not want to get pregnant with dysbiosis and high inflammation as this will negatively affect baby as well.

Hi! I wrote a few questions down about anxiety, but wanted to check back in. This isn’t about serotonin nutrients per se, but I wanted to keep it on the same thread. Since writing, I have stopped the optimal prenatal MF and switched to 1 capsule of prenatal essentials MF. I also started taking your d3/k2 once a day. I take fish oil after dinner and optimal electrolyte during the day. I am still having anxiety and can’t tell if it’s lessening, but know some days are worse than others. I also take l-theanine in the morning and 1 -2 stress nutrients. I find my anxiety peaks an hour or so after waking and maybe again mid afternoon. I’m thinking this is related to cortisol? The stress nutrients are making my hair really soft which is great! But I’m noticing I’m getting tired or sometimes headaches too, and sometimes the anxiety still creeps in. Lithium orotate has helped me fall asleep but I’m finding some nights I don’t need it now but I am still waking around 3-4am. At that point I’m in a light restful doze but nothing great. So I’m wondering if I need to pivot to something else. Adrenal cortex? I homeschool my kids and we are always on the move so it’s not ideal to have anxiety or feel tired. One thing to note is that I am compound hetero for MTHFR so I’m wondering if I may need a balance of methyl donors and non methyl donors. I have not taken homocysteine nutrients for 2 weeks nor have I taken gallbladder nutrients anymore (I didn’t know if the choline was causing me not to sleep well). However, my geographic tongue is back so I’m wondering if I should add that back in at lunch instead of dinner so I can fall asleep. I have taken your optimal prenatal in the past and felt a calm energy which also makes me think I may benefit from methyls at some point but I’m scared to over do it now! I have also taken your optimal pc and felt the same- energy but just need to find the balance maybe. I’m not sure. So, my question is- what would be a good pivot point here? My anxiety is halting my experimentation lol, but I don’t want it to because I’m annoyed with the anxiety. I am seeing my naturopath on the 31st so I will have homocysteine and d run among hormones (I am pretty sure anxiety peaked during ovulation this month) other things, but didn’t know if you might have another suggestion. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!

Hi Steph -

Your thinking and plan sounds solid.

I hear you about the experimentation.

We all want to make the right choice without making ourselves feel worse.

I like to say that whatever information you discover is information that you can leverage to make your next decision.

Thus, if you switch to Optimal Prenatal and find a calm energy, awesome.

If you ended up getting more anxious, that's also great information - annoying way to find out - but it's still great information.

You're not stupid for trying and you're not stupid for wondering if it's the right thing.

No one knows. Honestly.

There's soooo much going on that no doctor will know without testing some different supplements.

I can say that Serotonin Nutrients may be very helpful as those who are indeed sensitive to methyl donors appear to also be low in serotonin - and Serotonin Nutrients supports healthy serotonin levels.*

Waking up in the middle of the night may also be indicative of low serotonin - and also low cortisol - and blood sugar dysregulation.

Anxiety peaks an hour after waking, eat a protein based breakfast earlier - before the anxiety creeps in - and also before it creeps in the afternoon.

Perhaps you're not eating enough protein - or eating enough period. Intermittent fasting and time restricted eating is all the rage right now - and for some it's great -and others it's a nightmare.

Geographic tongue is associated with a congested liver - so I'd get back on the Bile Nutrients and take 2 before dinner - or you can use the Liver Nutrients instead if you don't want that choline.

I'd actually give the Serotonin Nutrients a shot.

Consider:

  • Do not make any supplement changes right now besides adding in Serotonin Nutrients.
  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast and 1 capsule after dinner closer to bed
  • Make the food/ eating adjustments as needed

I do believe the Serotonin Nutrients may be the answer you need.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Steph -

I just did a cursory look on the relationship between cortisol and serotonin.

I'm an idiot.

If you look at my Serotonin Pathway found on the StrateGene Report, you'll see that chronic stress depletes serotonin production and increases serotonin breakdown.

Thus, the stress you're experiencing is indeed depleting your serotonin.

The recommendation above of adding Serotonin Nutrients is on point - and I will say my apologies for not recognizing this the first time you asked.

I'd bump up the use of Stress Nutrients and also add in the Serotonin Nutrients twice daily as suggested above.

I'm confident you'll be happy again and not anxious :)

Hello Seeking Health team, My daughter took 1 pill of Serotonin Nutrients and had an immediate reaction of pain in the middle of her ribs, nausea and a red rash on her face hands and shoulders. The pain and nausea lasted a few minutes but the rash had spread and went away after about an hour. Can you tell what could have caused this? (We would like to know so we can avoid product with the same ingredients in the future.) Thank you, Ronnie

Hi Ronnie -

That's a niacin flush and it's a normal response to niacin especially if taken on an empty stomach.

After she eats a meal, she can take 1 capsule of Serotonin Nutrients.

She may also want to open the capsule and put 1/2 a capsule onto a bite of food at the end of her meal and take it that way.

Hi! I wrote to you in the Q & A to say that I’m taking lithium and wanted to stack NAC for mood as I was struggling a bit (even though the lithium does definitely help straighten out my thoughts). You recommended serotonin nutrients. I didn’t know what to expect but ordered it. Omg… I don’t feel flat all the time anymore. I’m more upbeat even during my luteal phase and my HRV has risen while my RHR has fallen. Thank you so so so much. You’re pure magic! If you ever need a case study for how your supplements have helped a hormone imbalanced person… I’m it! My only question is… does this build up and do I taper off over time or should I be taking daily? With lithium oratate, unless I’m on holiday, I tend to find it needs replenishment everyday for example (sometimes twice a day during stressful periods).

Hi Jas -

That's awesome ;)

Thank you for sharing! Please do leave a review - a video review would be excellent ;)

To answer your question:

  • neurotransmitters can 'build up' if you're taking too much of the nutrient precursors AND you are not burning through them as fast.
  • our brain makes neurotransmitters, stores them, releases them when needed, they bind to the receptors to fire and create the desired response, then they fall off the receptor, get reabsorbed and stored OR they get broken down and peed out.
  • some days you will need more serotonin than others.
  • if you wake up feeling great, you're good - don't take Serotonin Nutrients.
  • you may find that as you continue improving that you don't need to take it as often as you were in the beginning.
  • often times people need a supplement every single day or multiple times a day at first, then, as their brain heals or becomes more efficient, they only need it a few times a week.

Simple method is:

  • know how you feel when you need it
  • know how you feel when you don't.

You'll learn from experiencing it.

;)

Would this be helpful for a child (age 10) with pretty severe OCD and anxiety? He is not on any medications.

Hi E -

OCD and anxiety is associated with low serotonin.

Supporting healthy serotonin levels is recommended.

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus: 1/2 lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 glass upon waking and another midday
  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 capsule in the morning with breakfast to support healthy serotonin levels.*
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule after dinner

You should see benefit starting on the same day.

1. I have a client with fibromyalgia symptoms, so I want to give them b complex and some serotonin. I came across your serotonin complex and I love it because it has the saffron and even some inositol. However, I can’t imagine I can combine it with the complex B because I would end up with a bit too much niacin and b6?. What’s your thought about this and best practices around this? 2. I like your b complex and multis, but I have one question regarding b12. It’s always difficult to find a bit more b12 in a complex or a multi. I do of course imagine it has to do with capsule size. Your b complex has only 50mcg, but I think someone with methylation issues could be needing much more? And if I would combine with active methyl then I’d have too much folate? Could you help me figure out Dr. Ben Lynch thoughts behind this and best practices? Of course one can combine with extra b12, etc, however, usually a treatment also includes other nutrients (omegas, magnesium, liver, as examples), so I’m always looking at the most optimal way to get balanced nutrients.

Hi Maria -

  1. I like your thinking. I agree just the Serotonin Nutrients and not the B Complex. That said, I'd also support with Optimal Electrolyte with 1 serving upon waking and 1 serving midday. They may also do well with the Serotonin Nutrients with 1 capsule in the morning and 1 before bed.

  2. B12 is a very powerful and very stimulating nutrient. One has to be cautious with it along with folate. Ramping up methylation must be done gently and the best way to do it is actually by reducing 'dirty genes' vs giving nutrients. This is done by reducing exposures to mental and physical stressors, overcoming infections, supporting an immune system, eliminating offending foods, etc

I don't like using too much B12 and in fact have been lowering it across most our formulations so people have better experiences with our supplements. If one needs more B12, they can use one of our lozenges.

Hello- I am looking for something to lesson anxiety, sometimes panic attacks. I currently am taking l-theanine in the morning and sometimes stress nutrients. I am trying lithium orotate to sleep which helps with onset and a couple good hours, but am still waking early and feel like I’m in a restful REM state but not deep sleep. I was taking 1/4 glutothione in the morning but stopped that, but still no change in sleep. Was conflicted bc I read two things about glutothione helping sleep and anxiety but then also raising glutamate which would be excitatory. I do take optimal fish oil and 2 gallbladder nutrients after dinner. I also take the optimal prenatal MF 4-6 capsules depending on how I feel. I was taking homocysteine nutrients but stopped bc my homocysteine was a 6. Wondering if maybe that’s what I’m missing and need to add back I’m not sure but will draw my labs soon. After reading about serotonin nutrients I didn’t know if it would be helpful but I’m also hesitant to add anything in! Then, I’m confused bc I have low libido so that might mean dopamine? Except right now, something to calm myself would be the most beneficial. Thank you for any tips!

Hi Steph -

Your thinking is on point.

One thing I see here is you may be taking too much of the Optimal Prenatal MF. I know the serving size is 8 capsules. I'm wondering if you should switch to Prenatal Essentials MF and take 1 capsule with breakfast - a protein breakfast.

Too much folate, choline and B12 can contribute to anxiety.

I'd like you to right now reduce how much Optimal Prenatal MF you're taking as it seems it may be a possible contributor to how you're feeling.

Consider:

  • Optimal Prenatal MF: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast and if you feel good yet need some extra support, consider another 1 capsule with a protein based lunch. Do not take more than this.
  • Prenatal Essentials MF: get this and when it arrives, stop the Optimal Prenatal MF for now and take 1 capsule of Prenatal Essentials MF with a protein based breakfast -and if needing more support, take 1 capsule with a protein based lunch otherwise do not take it at lunch.
  • You may be getting sufficient nutrients from food and your lifestyle may be quite healthy so you don't need as much of the nutrients.
  • Vitamin D3+K2: consider 1 capsule with any meal of the day and also test your vitamin D levels. Low D levels are associated with poor sleep and mood disturbances and this supports healthy vitamin D levels.*

Make these changes and report back.

I left a message earlier today about full body flushing. I just read from another review that they also had the flushing but thought it was due to the Niacin in the product. If this is something that has occurred as I am having a workup by an endocrinologist to see if I have a carcinoid tumor that can cause a hormone release. If this is something that has been reported with this product, I can let the endocrinologist know this. Thank you

Hi Margaret -

Niacin flushing can occur in people especially if they are taking the supplement away from food or with just a snack.

If you take Serotonin Nutrients after a meal, you should not really flush at all.

Niacin flushing has been reported with Serotonin Nutrients and with some of our other products as well as I really find that nicotinic acid is more effective than other forms of niacin.

Use it with food and you should be good to go :) - a full meal - not a snack.

Hi After reading your dirty genes (mind blowing) I'm almost 100% sure I'm a fast COMT and fast MAOA. The thing is for like 10 years I've been trying different diets like vegan, keto, carnivore. Lately I've been eating carnivore ish, glutenfree bread and a lot of fruit. Not to much fat, fat doesn't feel so good on me. Eating a higher protein intake and lower carbs I would say, I've been eating this since 1 year. Got a kid this year February, feel energetic at first eating like this but this summer i started to feel kinda blue, like not happy but not depressed. Just felt like a robot you know. Not so motivated cuz I was so tired. Brain nutrients helps so, electrolytes help a bit, even tried gallbladder nutrients the help my tender right rib but didn't help with the blue fatigue feeling. Lost to much weight so to skinny. 2 weeks ago it hit me, I'm breastfeeding and I need more energy. Not proud of it but yes I reached for the cookies, homemade cookies, still got sugar in them but baked with ghee goat milk wheat flour and sugar. Daily consumption of 4 - 5 cookies, weekly consumption of white rice more bread and a lots of potatoes and my fatigue and blues are gone, I got more energy and feel great. My breathing is so much better and digestion feel good. Is this normal? It's so funny I even ask that cuz now days all you hear is don't eat carbs they are no good. But I so feel awesome and no crash. My mood is awesome. Anyway should I feel worry about this and try like this supplement? What are my body trying to tell me or should I just relax and enjoy my cookies :) i know weird question but I just trying to understundom what my body need. Like more carbs?

Hi Rebecca -

Glad you enjoyed Dirty Genes :)

Your awareness is beautiful.

What happened to you, happened with me when I tried ketogenic when it was all the rage.

I went keto, felt great, had lots of energy and then I was blue. I then binged on cookies and crap and felt great again.

We need carbs to feel the serotonin producing bugs in our gut to have us feel good and happy.

There's also likely other aspects to carbs as well that I'm no doubt missing here.

That said, eat things in moderation.

I like carnivore but I think it's extreme for most people.

Instead, try the ancestral or paleo type diet and get some carbs in you.

I wrote the book, Dirty Genes - not Perfect Genes. Enjoy your cookies and chips and sugar at times.

You know when you're overdoing them.

Now you went too extreme the other way and it made your mood blue.

Balance.

Of course, I'd rather you not eat 5 cookies a day so let's moderate that a bit.

Consider:

  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 capsule in the morning after breakfast - and if you're not sleeping through the night, take 1 before bed.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 to 3 servings a day
  • Keep going with the Gallbladder Nutrients before dinner
  • Brain Nutrients in the morning or as needed
  • Prenatal Essentials: 1 capsule with breakfast and 1 with lunch

This should be a big change for you.

Keep me posted.

I have taken the Serotonin nutrients for about 1 year. I started to have an allergic reaction (flushing) and the doctors are trying to find out what has caused this. My question is: Serotonin Nutrients is listed as 50 mg 5-htp with enhancements. What does this put the 5-htp level at? I am asking this as it is possible to have a flushing reaction to 5-htp if added to an antidepressant, but I am not taking an antidepressant. Is the Serotonin nutrients capsule far stronger than the 50 mg with the enhancements? The medical tests I am undergoing are extremely expensive and I am looking at all possibilities. I am not looking here to blame anyone. I am just looking for a solution. Thank you

Hi Peg -

There is niacin in the Serotonin Nutrients which may contributing to your 'flushing'.

If you take it with food or after a meal, you should not flush.

Here's an article on niacin flushing;
https://www.seekinghealth.com/blogs/education/niacin-flush

Here's a video on it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qoogu2ubgcw

I'd take a day or two break from it and see how you feel.

Then, take it after a full meal.

Is this something someone can take alongside an SSRI? Husband is taking methylfolate at methlycobalamin as well to help serotonin levels. Thanks!

Hi Beth -

It's one or another.

One cannot take both a SSRI and Serotonin Nutrients as this affects serotonin levels too much.

For your husband, consider:

  • Optimal Man: take 2 capsules with breakfast and 2 with lunch
  • then he would stop using the methylfolate and methylcobalamin as these are found in the multivitamin as well
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 to 3 servings a day as needed

Hello - looking for supplements to support ADHD/anxiety symptoms for my son. Currently trying Optimal Focus and he has taken up to 3 pills a day but feels no different. Other replies to a similar question point to adding dopamine/brain nutrient supplements. Ive read that 30mg of Saffron has been linked to helping with adhd and I noticed the serotonin nutrients include saffron but the dopamine does not. I’m conflicted about trying the serotonin with saffron or go with the dopamine supplements. Any assistance is appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Jp -

I hear you.

Here's what you may consider:

  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 to 2 capsules with a protein based breakfast stacked with the Optimal Focus
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1-2 servings a day
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal Man: 1 to 2 capsules with his protein based breakfast - this is a multivitamin for men.

This combination should be quite supportive for him.

On the days he feels good in the morning, focused, energized and in a good mood, skip the supplements. Do not take them.

On the days he feels he needs support, take them.

He will know.

Always evaluate how you are feeling prior to taking the supplement.

I am wondering if I need Serotonin Nutrients or Dopamine Nutrients (or something else?) I have a hx of depression (treated with Effexor- now weaned off), breast cancer (post-menopausal, on estrogen blockers) and hypothyroid (on Armour thyroid). My main symptoms now are anxiousness and bothersome "what if.." negative thoughts. Also longstanding trouble sleeping- fall asleep ok but wake up many times/night. But.. also have procrastination and overthinking which leads to much mindless scrolling/video watching. None of this is particularly new but I thought I'd get my groove back a bit after I got off the antidepressants and it hasn't happened. I take vit d/fish oil and an appropriate multi. Thanks for your help.

Hi Jennifer -

I suggest you work with a healthcare practitioner as there's quite a bit going on for you between your hormones, mental health, and sleep. And they're most likely all influencing each other in some way or form.

Negative thoughts and waking up during the night are typically associated with low GABA.

Dopamine is more associated with procrastination.

I suggest:

  • Optimal Sleep II (first option) or Ashwagandha: Take in the evening.
  • Brain Nutrients: Take 1 to 2 lozenges by mouth, let them completely dissolve, then swallow. Do not use within 5 hours of bedtime as it may interfere with sleep. This supplement enhances the effectiveness of other supplements such as Dopamine Nutrients.
  • Dopamine Nutrients: Take 1 capsule with or without food. Increase to 2 capsules only if you need more support. Take up to 4 days consecutively, then stop for 3 days. Do not use within 6 hours of bedtime.

Let us know how you go :).

Hello, Don't you just hate period headace? I saw a post where you talk about the connection between dopamine and estrogen. Don't remember exactly what you said but that was interesting. Anyway my question is, Could serotonin nutrients help with first day of period headace ? Would be great if you could talk more about women's problem and how to use your supplements for them, or maybe Nadia could do that? That would be so awesome. Take care, A

Hi Anna -

I hear you.

Just before ovulation and at ovulation, estrogen levels increase dramatically.

At this time, headaches may be associated with high estrogen.

Support healthy estrogen levels by using DIM+I3C during this time.*

Once ovulation has occurred, there is a significant drop of estrogen.

The fast and sudden drop of estrogen leads to either a drop of dopamine or a drop of serotonin - or both - depending on the woman.

  • Low dopamine is associated with low libido, low motivation, poor memory, attention issues, lack of focus, seeking reward from shopping or sweets.
Support healthy dopamine levels by using Dopamine Nutrients on your first day of menses or when needed.*

  • Low serotonin is associated with headaches, migraines and sadness. Support healthy serotonin levels by using Serotonin Nutrients on your first day of menses or when needed.*

If both seem relevant, then consider 1 capsule of each but start with just 1 capsule of the one that is most related to your needs.

This should help immensely.

Hello, I have POTS (diagnosed) and I suspect I have the MTHFR mutation. I am not currently taking medication for POTS. Will any of these ingredients have a negative impact on me (lowering blood pressure)? I was once told by a doctor to stop taking 5htp because it lowers blood pressure, but I am not confident they understood really anything about it. Thank you!

Hi Alex -

Serotonin Nutrients supports healthy serotonin levels.* I do not see an issue with people using Serotonin Nutrients if they have low blood pressure. My wife loves Serotonin Nutrients and her blood pressure is on the lower side.

POTS is associated with weakened adrenal glands.

Consider supporting healthy adrenals with:

  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule with breakfast
  • Stress Nutrients: 1-3 capsules with breakfast
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 to 3 servings a day WITH added 1/4 tsp of salt per serving. You're peeing out more sodium with POTS.

I am confused as to whether I need serotonin nutrients, dopamine or optimal focus. I have tried all but still unsure of the result. I struggle with lack of focus, low energy, some ruminating thoughts and binge eating. I tried stimulant meds which helped a lot but I got a blod clot and dont want to take meds. GLPs helped so much but I had to go off because they cause major hair loss despite nutrient intake and slow weight loss. What would be helpful for these struggles? Serotonin nutrients makes me itch.

Hi Jennifer -

I hear you.

The itch you felt from Serotonin Nutrients is from the niacin flushing. If you take it with food, you will feel that less.

Here's what I think you will do well with:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking.
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1-2 capsules with breakfast.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: sip 1 serving over time once to three times a day.

That combination will be what you're looking for ;)

Dear dr ben lynch Can you take this product during the day, I'm afraid I'll get tired, But my mood is pretty bad and I would like to try this product. I also found out in your book that if you don't have enough serotonin, you might also have little bile acid. I also have a fast comt . Thank you very much

Hi Ela -

A fast COMT may do well with either Serotonin Nutrients or Dopamine Nutrients.

You definitely can take Serotonin Nutrients during the day.

The serotonin won't convert to melatonin until it is dark outside so you should not get tired.

Please read the product pages fully to determine if Dopamine Nutrients is better suited for you or Serotonin Nutrients.

Consider:

  • Low serotonin is associated with impatience, obsessiveness, anxiousness, constipation
  • Low dopamine is associated with significant sadness, no motivation, no libido, inattention, muscle stiffness, no energy, decreased pleasure

It is also possible to support healthy serotonin and dopamine levels together by taking 1 capsule of Serotonin Nutrients and 1 capsule of Dopamine Nutrients.*

Start out though with just one and see how you feel.

Hi Dr. Lynch, I have struggled with severe anxiety, panic disorder and agoraphobia for the last 7 years. I have made big improvements over the last 6 months with therapy and exposure therapy, but I still have symptoms that affect my life (specifically panic attacks that wake me in the night with tachycardia). I eat a snack before bed every night (no issues with blood sugar). My sleep isn't great, I have a hard time both falling asleep and staying asleep. I take melatonin every other night usually. I have also noticed my anxiety and panic ebbs and flows with my menstrual cycle and I have heavy bleeding, clotting, and servere menstrual cramping. I was diagnosed with PCOS from a young age. My female hormones are always "normal" however I've always had high testosterone and androgens. I'm not interested in going on the pill or SSRIs (my doctor has recommended both for the anxiety/panic and PMDD) . Would this product be a good alternative? Thanks for your help.

Hi JC -

I would not use Serotonin Nutrients.

Instead, I'd consider using Myo-Inositol at around 2 grams. You can find it on Amazon.

The Myo-Inositol powder is sweet so it's easy to take.

Start low say at 1 gram to ease into it.

This supports those with PCOS.

Can serotonin nutrients be taken at the same time as lithium orotate?

Hi Olivia -

Yes they can.

They may cancel each other out.

I recommend trying each one by itself for a day before you combine them.

See how you feel on each one - then make a mental note - then stack if needed.

Hello Doctor, Will serotonin nutrients help stop SSRI withdrawl syndrome? Specially withdrawl syndrome from Sertraline/ Zolft after weaning off too quickly. The symptoms are cognitive impairment, social anxiety, depression and lack of motivation. Thank you!

Hi Amanda -

Serotonin Nutrients supports healthy serotonin levels and Dopamine Nutrients supports healthy dopamine levels.*

The list you shared seem to be a combination of the two.

I'm leaning more towards 1 capsule of Dopamine Nutrients along with 1/2 a lozenge of Brain Nutrients.

Having Serotonin Nutrients on hand in case my recommendation fails to perform completely for you is a good idea.

You may do well with combining 1 capsule of Serotonin Nutrients with 1/2 a Brain Nutrients lozenge OR you may do well with 1 and 1 of Dopamine and Serotonin.

The key is knowing how you feel with each of these individually as some days you will need more healthy serotonin support and other days more healthy dopamine support.*

Brain Nutrients supports healthy neurotransmission across the board which is why I recommend it so much.* It's just a must when supporting healthy brain function.*

Hi …Dr. Ben , not to long ago I bought Serotonin Nutrients for a sleep issue...(waking during the middle of the night). In addition to S.N. , I was taking magnesium glycinate to also improve my sleep , while taking 1 capsule of S.N. before bed.... After a few days , I gradually started to experience a feeling of anger or maybe it is more a feeling of over aggressiveness, which is highly unusual for me…is this or can this be a response reaction to the Serotonin nutrients…I stopped the Serotonin nutrients last night to see if this response stops… please advise…I a have tried numerous protocols, meditation, morning sun light, get to bed before 10:30, darken room, used other sleep aids, sleep app, my score is generally a poor and not so good on the Rem and Deep Sleep. I am currently reading your Book... Dirty Genes ...trying to put this puzzle together... (a challenge is an understatement), Dr. Ben, If you can give me any kind of feedback it will be greatly appreciated thank you, looking forward to your response...ND

Hi Nicholas -

Yes, that's definitely the Serotonin Nutrients doing this.

Here's what you can do.

Only use Serotonin Nutrients on the nights you need to.

If you slept well the night before, do not use Serotonin Nutrients.

Your brain essentially is in a healthy while receiving these nutrients so be sure you use it when you need and don't when you don't.

I suspect you felt benefit the first night and woke up well. Then you decided to take it again the following night - and that's when you should have skipped it.

I suggest taking Serotonin Nutrients possibly every other night or every third night - and again - only when you don't stay asleep as it supports healthy sleep duration.*

Also consider:

  • Acetyl L Carnitine: 1 capsule in the morning immediately upon waking to support healthy sleep duration for that night.*
  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule in the morning with a protein based breakfast to support a healthy sleep duration for that night.* DO NOT take this if you had a good sleep the night before or feel good upon waking as you'll experience aggressiveness.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Gallbladder Nutrients: take 2 capsules before dinner. As weird as it sounds, supporting a healthy liver and gallbladder is key for healthy sleep.* I use this most nights before dinner.

I would also check your testosterone levels and estrogen levels. Since I started supporting my testosterone levels, my sleep has been way better. I designed a new supplement for this and have been testing it. It's being made currently - release in Winter.

Be sure to turn off Wifi and put phone on airplane mode. Also have cold fresh air coming in your room and no light.

Dr. Lynch

Would this be too stimulating? I took it 2X at night and am wide awake, again and can’t sleep. I feel nauseous too. Nothing else changed in my routine.

Hi Dani -

It's possible to experience those symptoms before bed for some people, yes.

This shows me that your serotonin levels are fine and is not the issue you need before bed to support a healthy duration or onset of sleep.*

Serotonin Nutrients is for those who typically do not stay asleep as it supports healthy serotonin and thus melatonin levels.*

If you're looking to support healthy onset of sleep, consider Lithium Orotate and/or Histamine Nutrients or Phosphatidyl Serine or Optimal Sleep II.*

Optimal Sleep II has phosphatidyl serine and lithium orotate in it.

Would this be a good supplement for social anxiety disorder? Or is there something else that would be a better fit?

Hi Jess -

Social anxiety can be complex.

I find that often times high serotonin or high dopamine has to do more with social anxiety and lower levels of acetylcholine are often implicated.

I'd consider Optimal Focus supporting healthy social interactions.*

Consider:

  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule in the morning to support a healthy social interaction that day.*
  • Stress Nutrients OR Phosphatidyl Serine: consider 1 capsule of either one (or both) to support healthy response to stress.*

Try one of the supplements above first by itself.

One may do the trick one day and another time you may find you need more support.

Would this assist with anxiety? More specifically with anxiety with flying?

Hi Alan -

I don't believe Serotonin Nutrients is the right choice here.

Usually anxiety from flying or other things is associated with high levels of norepi and dopamine.

Serotonin can increase dopamine levels.

Consider:

  • Stress Nutrients: 3 capsules with breakfast
  • Lithium Orotate: 1 capsule with breakfast
  • nose breathing at a deep slower relaxed rate
  • listen to an audiobook or podcast or music with quality headphones from your phone to distract yourself.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Can these be taken alongside melatonin? I would love to know your opinion on melatonin too - thank you.

Hi Maria -

If you feel you need additional support for healthy sleep duration, then yes.

If you are sleeping through the night, then I would not use it with melatonin.

Melatonin can be helpful for some people - there are many factors. If you feel great using it, then that's all you need to know really - unless you're trying to get pregnant - then stop using it as it can mess up your cycle.

Dr Lynch, Thank you for taking time to answer our questions. I’m not sure where to start. I seem to have the b12 and b6 deficiency under control now, but have issues due to changes in life that seem to affect my mood/motivation and anxiety with low feelings more often since being Post Menopausal at an early age. After Covid I seemed to develop intense shaking and unable to handle minimal stress, and had lots of adrenaline rushes. I am on a steady amount of magnesium. I’m on B12 - had/have pernicious anemia. Hormone levels are basically super low, very post menopausal. I’m wondering if I should try Dopamine Nutrients, and possibly Serotonin Nutrients (and would stop my B6). I also recently purchased Stress Nutrients and I took 1/2 of one and it made me so sleepy. I do know I have absorption issues and also work on supporting both my immune system and gut health. But this low hormone thing really changes the brain. and I do not like it! I don’t believe I am a candidate for synthetic hormone replacement due to a steady homocysteine of around 9-11… it used to be WAY higher before I got on my B vitamins. Magnesium helps me feel better regarding the anxiety, and shaking, or over active feeling adrenals, but it hasn’t helped mood or energy or low level feelings. I also have Brain Nutrients but I didn’t feel anything much when I tried it twice. I am also super sensitive to methylfolate, which basically causes POTS symptoms and severe anxiety. But I have to take B12 probably for life. Any suggestions on where to start? I also don’t like to feel stimulated and do not drink caffeine anymore. But would like to feel motivation again! Thank you in advance for your help. You are a blessing to so many people.

Hi Jennifer -

I believe you should consider:

  • Progesterone cream (available on Amazon)

I don't think any of our nootropics will support you without feeling any type of side effects currently.

It sounds like your hormones are quite low and they need to be supported.

In terms of foundational support, I'd consider:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: take 1 serving immediately upon waking in the morning along with an additional 1/4 tsp of salt
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenges: take 1/2 a lozenge upon waking along with the electrolyte
  • Fish Oil: take 1 capsule after dinner
  • Digestive Enzymes: take 1-2 capsules with meals as needed to support healthy absorption of protein, fat and carbohydrates

If you wake up very tired, way too early, find yourself waking up to pee in the middle of the night, then consider:

  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast to support healthy cortisol levels.*

If you wake up rested, slept well, then do NOT take Adrenal Cortex.

Few other things:

  • Make sure you are nose breathing - not mouth breathing.
  • Start your day with protein mostly such as collagen or whey protein or eggs and meat
  • Dedicate time to you during the day - 30 minutes of just whatever you want to do even if just sitting and watching the sunset or walking in a park or paddle boarding

Thank you, Dr Lynch, for taking time to respond to my earlier question. Just to let you know I have already bought Serotonin Nutrients before I received your response. Since I already have Serotonin Nutrients, in your view, do you think I should try it out starting with half a capsule? If yes, can the capsule be opened, and half the content be sprinkled on food? Is there a risk of serotonin syndrome by taking Serotonin Nutrients? I don't take any SSRI nor any medication except for Ponstan occasionally for pain and some supplements. Thanks again.

Hi Derrick -

Yes you may open the capsule as needed.

Serotonin syndrome can occur if one is taking too much serotonin support, yes. Starting lower is a good idea. It usually takes a fair bit of serotonin to induce serotonin syndrome.

I am not sure what you use Ponstan for but do consider using Joint Nutrients to support healthy joint mobility and joint health.* It works very well and typically improvements are seen within 1 day.

Hi Dr. Lynch, would this be okay to give to a 2 year old if his bowels need help moving things along? We are trying magnesium and a few other recs, but wondering if this might fit the bill for him! Half a capsule, maybe? Also, is this okay to take during pregnancy for an extra boost? I have no idea if I have low mood, I'm just always tired with a poor immune system :) Thank you!!

Hi Kayla -

For your 2 year old, I'd consider hydrating him with 1/2 scoop of Optimal Electrolyte in a glass of water. I think he would enjoy the Orange flavor the best or Berry.

You cannot take Serotonin Nutrients while pregnant or for a little guy like him at 2 years old.

Often times little ones are so preoccupied with life that they don't want to go poop. Set a routine with him - whatever time of day he tends to go to the bathroom and sit him down on the toilet for a bit. Routine here makes a difference.

And teach him that when he feels the Poop Monster to come out, he needs to go sit down and get him out so he feels better.

Learning to listen to the 'urge to poop' is very important. The longer one ignores that urge, the more dehydrated the poop gets thereby causing constipation.

For you, I'd consider Brain Nutrients Lozenge - 1/2 lozenge during pregnancy. The Optimal Electrolyte may help support as well. Take both in the morning upon waking up.

The Optimal Prenatal or Prenatal Essentials taken with breakfast and lunch should support healthy energy levels as well.

Hi Dr. Lynch, I'm contemplating Serotonin Nutrients but I'm not sure if it is suitable for me. I have been struggling with sleep - taking some time to fall asleep, waking up multiple times through the night and sometimes finding it hard to fall back to sleep and also tend to wake up early at around 5am. In addition, I also have GI issues - prone to constipation, having food (including supplements) sensitivities, gut discomfort, bloating and gas. I'm also prone to neck pain and tightness with occasional headaches as well as leg heaviness and aches. I do take Gallbladder Nutrients and occasionally Optimal GI as I find Optimal GI tends to make my constipation worse. Is there a risk of serotonin syndrome by taking Serotonin Nutrients as I'm not sure whether my serotonin levels are high or low? Also, to start off slowly initially, can I take half a capsule by opening the capsule and pouring the content into a glass of water or food? Thank you in advance.

Hi Derrick -

I'd focus first on the gut and not sure if Serotonin Nutrients is right for you either.

I'd consider 1 capsule of Calcium-D-Glucarate after dinner along with increasing Gallbladder Nutrients to 2 capsules before lunch and 2 before dinner or take all 4 before dinner.

I would pause Optimal GI at the moment.

In the morning, I'd add in a serving of Optimal Electrolyte along with a pinch or two of salt. Sip it in filtered water.

With a protein based breakfast, consider a capsule of Adrenal Cortex a few mornings a week. I typically find that people need this for a few mornings in a row and then on the 4th day, they sleep well and feel rested in the morning. When you sleep well through the night and wake up rested, do NOT take Adrenal Cortex with breakfast. Skip it. Only take it if you're experiencing frequent wake ups, dizzy upon standing and/or waking up way too early as it supports healthy cortisol levels.*

Before bed, consider a capsule of Optimal Sleep II

This should support you well.

I got on here to get some immune support for my family of 5 for our upcoming summer travel, but am getting sucked into purchasing for other needs HA. Looking for mood/anxiety and energy support, I have 3 small kids 5 and under, have been pregnant and/or bf'ing for over 6yrs, recently weaned and am now trying to get my health back in order. I am tired and short-fused lately. Just discovered I'm severely deficient in B12, which is probably the culprit for some of my health challenges, so just started your 5000 lozenge and am under a practitioner's care continuing to dig into my gut health. I was thinking of getting Serotonin Nutrients to take bf bed, with Brain Nutrients for support during the day and Lithium as needed for my more extreme anxiety. When looking at who Serotonin is good for, I most connected w needing help for constipation, menstrual mood support, and my immune system seems super overactive right now. But other things do not connect, I have a low libido, no ocd or adhd, I sleep pretty well, actually if I wake, it's usually an hour or two early after sleeping all night. Curious, given this, if you think Serotonin would be good for me? AND given my B12 deficiency, if I should just wait to see how mood, anxiety, etc balances out when that supplementation starts to make a difference in my levels? Like maybe I wait on other things for now?

Hi Allison -

I'll first help with immune support:

  • Immune Intensive is great for supporting a healthy immune system.* Use after food before getting on an airplane or public transport. Also use if feeling you need to support your immune system. It's 3 oz also so you can carry it on the plane.
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenges is great to support healthy antioxidant levels which are needed for a healthy immune response.*
  • NAC is awesome to support healthy lungs if needing support from smoke or a past or current infection.*

Supporting your health:

  • I'd consider in the morning taking Adrenal Cortex with breakfast along with Stress Nutrients - 3 capsules. This supports likely tired adrenals and a healthy response to stress - a great duo.*

The Adrenal Cortex also supports a healthy sleep duration.* Only use Adrenal Cortex if you wake up frequently at night, wake up to pee, or wake up too early way before your alarm clock, fly to different time zones or just feel sluggish in the morning as it supports healthy cortisol levels.* If you feel great in the morning, DO NOT TAKE it as you will then have too much cortisol turning you into a monster ;)

For constipation, I'd consider Gallbladder Nutrients and take 2 capsules before dinner to support a healthy bowel movement by supporting healthy bile production and bile flow.* This organ, and liver, are very overworked during pregnancy and breastfeeding so taking Gallbladder Nutrients is very supportive. A sluggish gallbladder is also associated with impatience and anger.

In the morning, I'd use 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Glutathione Plus Lozenges. Bite once, let dissolve slowly and then swallow. This supports a healthy energy level, healthy immune response (calmer), clarity and overall health.* You can give this to your kids as well - just give them 1/4 to 1/2 a lozenge.

Low libido - let's work on that after the above are supported as it may bounce back after your adrenals, liver and gallbladder and detox systems are supported.

I'd also ensure you're having 1-2 servings of Optimal Electrolytes a day. Sip them. These are great for kids as well. You can make great tasting popsicles out of them, too!

That should help immensely ;)

Firstly, it’s just so awesome how you answer everyone’s questions personally 😊 Is this the supplement for me for waking at 4am every morning so my brain can tell me about every little thing that went wrong decades ago and may possibly go wrong in the future 😂😩 thank you

Hi Annie -

Ha. Yes I believe you explained it well.

Id take 1 capsule of Serotonin Nutrients before bed.

If you find it’s still not keeping you asleep till your alarm goes off, then Id add Adrenal Cortex with breakfast.

Only take Adrenal Cortex on mornings you woke up way too early and or went pee a couple times during the night.

Can this cause a stimulant feeling? I’ve been feeling a bit caffeinated since I started taking them, and they’re the only thing different in my day. I was hoping for more of a relaxing feeling. I avoid caffeinated coffee because I don’t like feeling stimulated. It makes my compulsions worse, and that’s how I’ve been feeling lately. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hi Natalie -

Yes, it may especially if you are taking it more frequently than needed.

A more relaxed feeling may be found from Stress Nutrients. Consider this at 3 capsules with breakfast.

Serotonin Nutrients is supportive of those who tend towards needing healthy support towards obsessing.* Perhaps you don't need it as often?

If you found success with it on your first day, that's an indicator that it's helpful.

If you have never found success with it, that's an indicator it's not the right supplement for you.

Is it normal no have a rash? I take my first pill ever, and had a massive rash in my skin, it didn’t last much. Tha same happen the first time a use brain nutrients, but just ones. I’ve been keeping using it and never had that symptom again. But take serotonin nutrients for the first time and had a similar reaction (more intense). My girlfriend had a minor rash the first time she took serotonin nutrients also, but she keeps using it and it stops. Why does this happen?

Hi Nicolas -

That's the niacin.

If you take Serotonin Nutrients with food, you won't have this response to the niacin.

According to Perplexity AI:
A niacin flush happens because niacin causes the blood vessels in the skin to dilate or widen, increasing blood flow to the skin's surface. This vasodilation is the reason for the reddening, warmth, tingling, and itching sensations that occur with a niacin flush.
Specifically, niacin activates a receptor called GPR109A on skin cells, which triggers the release of prostaglandin D2. Prostaglandin D2 is a vasodilator that causes the flushing reaction by widening blood vessels and increasing blood flow near the skin's surface.
The niacin flush is not an allergic reaction, but rather a normal physiological response to high doses of niacin (nicotinic acid), especially when taking immediate or extended-release formulations. It typically begins 15-30 minutes after taking niacin and can last for 1-2 hours.
While uncomfortable, the niacin flush is harmless and actually indicates that the niacin is having its intended effect of improving blood flow and circulation. The flushing tends to become less severe over time as the body adjusts to niacin supplementation.

Can I take it with Sam-e or would that be too much serotonin?

Hi Natalie -

Every one is different.

Here's my recommendation:

I'd first try Serotonin Nutrients by itself.

Then, if needing additional support, I'd actually try 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients in addition to the Serotonin Nutrients.

Why?

Brain Nutrients supports healthy biopterin levels. Biopterin is needed to support healthy serotonin production.*

Some people don't need additional biopterin support and they make serotonin just fine with only using Serotonin Nutrients.

Other people need the combination.

This is the better combination than SAMe and Serotonin Nutrients.

Play with the amounts of Brain Nutrients and Serotonin Nutrients. Start low at first.

I have read your book and used so many of your products and tell everyone about them!! I have been getting migraines around ovulation and period and serotonin has helped either stop them or lessen them. But, Im just not sure how many I should take for when a migraine is starting? Also, I feel so much happier when I take this. Can I take everyday? I have tried optimal focus, helps with anxiety and also brain nutrients and dopamine. But, serotonin supplement I can feel a big difference in mood within 20 minutes. Should I mix in the other supplements to help mood? Little Sad, a little depressed and blah, also 4 small kids to care for. Thanks!!

Hi Tess -

Awesome :) Thank you!

Very cool that you're finding great results with Serotonin Nutrients.

You may take daily yes - if you feel you need it. On days you don't, skip it.

You may find that as you get close to ovulation, you may not need it for about a week. Then, once ovulation is over, you may need Dopamine Nutrients instead.

The key is to not over do it.

My kids love stacking all of them together - but they are kids in college who are studying hard so they are using a ton of brain cells.

Play with various combinations and keep in mind that your menstrual cycle will have a significant influence on how you respond to them.

I suspect you have a fast MAOA enzyme with fast serotonin reuptake.

Getting a StrateGene Report could be very insightful:
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/strategene-report

I'd try also taking 1/2 a Brain Nutrients lozenge first thing in the morning. I also like taking it mid way through my day. It helps my brain stay locked in and clear.

hello, I am a UK Customer and have a range of a your products purchased from Iherb. I have longstanding anxiety and depression/low mood and also some histamine issues/reactions onging. I am waking several times a night and early morning around 4 - took adrenal cortex for a number of weeks but have now stopped as not sure if this was contributing to anxiety / panic type attacks. I have had significant low energy and brain fog issues now for many months. I have tried the Brain nutrients 1/4 and also I have been taking the Stress nutrients for some weeks. Have tried the Optimal focus with little effect and also dopamine nutrients which did not seem to suit. I have also been trying Serotonin Nutrients which seem to have an effect sometimes and then other I experience a massive anxiety reaction ( see above ) which I am not sure is linked or not. I am not sure how many to take , when to take or for waht period of time - ie do I need a break from them. I would welcome any advice you might be able to offer with regard to the overall picture please? Many thanks Gina Turner

Hi Gina -

Optimal Focus is not the right supplement for you. We can scratch that one off.

Serotonin Nutrients is a good one and one that I would use before bed as it supports healthy serotonin levels.*

Low serotonin levels are associated with anxiousness, low mood and poor sleep duration.

Adrenal Cortex should be used only a few days a week - and only on days where you wake up way too early, wake up too frequently - otherwise it can contribute to side effects like you are experiencing.

Make sure you eat a protein-based breakfast - do not have caffeine, sugar or excessive carbs. Eggs, sausages, protein based smoothies.

I would also work with a health professional and measure your hormone levels. High estrogen and low progesterone may contribute to symptoms.

DIM+I3C supports healthy estrogen levels* and may be an important addition for you - but I would read the product description to see if it's a right fit for you:
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/dim-i3c-60-capsules

Stress Nutrients can be helpful - but I would pause it at the moment. Take Stress Nutrients if you are experiencing stress and would like to support healthy stress levels.* Stress is not the same as anxiety.

Brain Nutrients - I would pause this at the moment.

I tend to be a restless sleeper and wake up around 2-3am. I don’t need to use the bathroom when I wake up. Serotonin Nutrients didn’t seem to help. Anything else I can do? Diet and exercise help but don’t eliminate. I have had some luck with a cbd supplement. Thank you

Hi Jim -

I'd consider Adrenal Cortex with breakfast.

Make sure your WiFi is turned off, cell phone on airplane mode, room dark and not hot. Have a window open if it's quiet to allow fresh cool air come in - if that's possible.

I'd also consider Gallbladder Nutrients - 2 capsules before dinner. This supports healthy bile production and flow. If bile production is reduced and so is flow, then sleep is affected negatively.*

Hi, I took this and experienced a burning sensation in my stomach. What would cause that?

Hi Eileen -

The niacin would do that possibly if taken on an empty stomach.

I recommend taking this with food as stated in the suggested use.

Breastfeeding, sleep deprived mother with low mood, constipation, (follow dirty genes book since 1 year back). First I tried optimal focus, but I just become tierd and a little bit of low mood. After reading about this one I wounder if this on would suits me better but I wonder if you can take this while breastfeeding? Any other recommendations for sleep deprive mother? Thanks for now

Hi Anna -

If Optimal Focus made you more sleepy, then you need to start your day with 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients immediately upon waking up in the morning.

Then, if needing additional support for healthy motivation, healthy mood and healthy libido, consider adding in 1-2 capsules of Dopamine Nutrients as needed.

Before bed, consider 1 capsule of Serotonin Nutrients to support healthy sleep and healthy bowel movements. For the sleep, this supports healthy sleep duration.

If you don't find Serotonin Nutrients supporting healthy bowel movements, then consider taking 2 capsules of Gallbladder Nutrients before dinner. Gallbladder health is very important especially after pregnancy.

These may all be used while breastfeeding.

If you're still tired after using 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients in the morning, then add in 1 capsule of Adrenal Cortex with a protein-based breakfast. Only use this on mornings where the Brain Nutrients is not providing sufficient lift.

I have PEMT - Slow, COMT - Intermediate, MTHFR - Slow, GPX/GST - Slow, SOD2 - Fast, NOS - slow. Is there anything that Serotonin Nutrients should be mixed with? i.e. zinc or other Seeking Health supplements?

Hi Becca -

Serotonin Nutrients is fine to take with most supplements. You just wouldn't want to be taking Riboflavin in HIGH AMOUNTS as it would break down the serotonin too fast.

I recommend taking this before bed to support healthy duration of sleep. Take during the day to support healthy response to stress, bowel movements and healthy moods.

I'm trying to get the right supplements for my anxiety and overactive brainsymptoms and have purchased Serotinin nutrients and brain nutrients. I have a low stress retired life but deal with generalized anxiety, overactive brain together with repetitive thoughts (like getting stuck on a song in my head for weeks) and period sleep issues. The sleep issues include falling asleep but not staying asleep or light sleep. I take the Multi MF on a pulse basis and magnesium before bed. In the morning, based on your suggestion, I'm taking 1/2 of a gluthione plus along with electrolyes. Would the serotonin nutrients and brain nutrients be appropiate to my symptoms and how should I incorporate for optimal calmness and sleep quality. I also started with Histamine Nutrients and Digest as a periodic supplement for histamine response to food - high heart rate, heart pounding and sneezing - I dont have obvious seasonal allergies - just food responses. I don't want to overdo supplements so trying to find best path forward - thanks for your insight

Hi Cyndi -

Sounds like you're on a pretty good path.

I would start with Serotonin Nutrients first and hold off on the Brain Nutrients for now.

I would take Serotonin Nutrients upon waking and again before bed.

I'd add in the ProBiota HistaminX after dinner - that's very important.

Given your response to foods, histamine and sleep issues, I'd add 2 capsules of Gallbladder Nutrients before dinner. This supports healthy bile flow, microbiome, bowel movements, sleep and mood. As women, and men, age, our bile gets more and more sluggish causing a ton of issues.

I like your pulsing - keep that up.

Make sure you start your day with a higher protein breakfast - that's so important. Make eggs, meat, goat whey protein based smoothie. Do not eat carbs or coffee for breakfast. Ideally your breakfast is very low sugar and low carb.

Is it okay to take serotonin nutrients twice a day? Once during the day for mood and once before bed for sleep?

Hi Jen -

Absolutely. Yes.

I'd also consider adding 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients upon waking up in the morning to support healthy energy and mood.

My daughter (37) took Serotonin Nutrients for anxiety and mood. Two times it went well and 2 times she had a hard time catching her breath. She is only on a multi vitamin by Ortho Molecular. What would you recommend in place of this? She doesn't want to go on Prozac

Hi Susan -

Serotonin and histamine have a relationship.

I'd mix up the support.

If she has a hard time catching her breath, that tells me she is high histamine. I'd consider Histamine Nutrients to support healthy histamine levels as needed. This doesn't need to be taken daily - usually not - but when she needs to support healthy histamine levels, it does.*

Each morning, I'd consider using 1/4 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients upon rising in the morning - first thing. Start with 1/4 lozenge to see how she responds to it. She wants to feel a healthy clear head with a healthy mood. *

Then, if needing more support, add in 1 cap of Serotonin Nutrients OR 1 cap of Dopamine Nutrients. Alternate between them.*

I'd look into our Multivitamin One MF for her multivitamin for breakfast. It's 1 capsule a day and quite thorough.

After dinner, add in ProBiota HistaminX. A healthy microbiome is a must for a healthy mood and healthy serotonin levels.

Hi Dr. Lynch. I’m trying to find the best supplements to support my son. 12 years old, diagnosed ADHD since age 9. Tried stimulant meds when younger, the side effects were awful so discontinued. He’s Impulsive, hyperactive. Excellent at first person shooter video games. He’s played as a competitive goal keeper in soccer for 8 years. So quick responses. School is brutal for him, cannot sit still, feels the need to talk out all the time. He’s very loud. He’s bright but it pains him to sit there all day, and most of the time needs extra time explaining to understand the curriculum. Sometimes has trouble going to sleep at night because he likes to talk to us, he’s also always been an early riser. He’s always onto the next best thing. Very motivated when he gets an idea in his head, but that rarely lasts long. Very intense, and intense emotional responses too. I bought serotonin nutrients, he tried it twice and said it made him feel like acting “crazy”(silly). Would you recommend to continue, or add something else? Thank you.

Hi Stephanie -

Sounds like a great kid overall ;)

I'd stop the Serotonin Nutrients and switch to Optimal Focus combined with Phosphatidyl Serine - 1 capsule of each.

Before bed, I'd consider giving him 1-2 capsules of Histamine Nutrients.

In the morning, upon waking, give him 1/2 lozenge of Glutathione Plus Lozenge.

Make sure his breakfast consists of eggs, meat and protein - not just carbs or dry cereal. Those should be stopped.

Would this help with hormonal migraines?

Hi Christina -

Hormonal migraines may be associated with swings in estrogen levels.

If you're struggling with PMS, breast tenderness, then you may be experiencing high estrogen levels.

Support healthy estrogen levels with DIM+I3C.

If you are not experiencing PMS or high estrogen symptoms, then the rise and fall of estrogen may be triggering the migraines.

Stress can increase cortisol and reduce estrogen.

Consider Stress Nutrients to support a healthy response to stress. This would be taken in the morning.

If the 'Who Serotonin Is For' list resonates with you, then I'd consider Serotonin Nutrients as well on an as needed basis.

Hello, I’m not sure if this is right for me. I can fall asleep just fine but tend to wake up around 2:00 or 3:00 am (in bed around 10-11:30 pm). I’m an extremely calm, highly motivated, focused, and patient person with a buoyant mood (take care of things well under stress though I do get irritable sometimes from taking on too much). When I wake up in the middle of the night, I feel wide awake and energized though not worried at all. However, this doesn’t mean I need less sleep because if I were to get up, start working, exercise, etc., I’ll crash hard later in the day. Right now, here is what I take as supplements: Garden of Life Raw One Multivitamin for Men (1), Premier Research Labs Max Stress B (about 1.5 mL), Jarrow Formula B12 and Folate chewable (1), Doctor’s Best NAC Detox Regulators 1/2 capsule (300 mg of NAC), Premier Organic Greens, Source Naturals L-Tryptophan 1/2 capsule (0.5g), Solaray zinc 12.5mg, betaine HCl plus pepsin and Now Super Enzymes with meals, Doctor’s Best Synergistic Glucosamine MSM 2-3 capsules/day, 250 mg per day of niacin, DHA/EPA fish oil, organic rooibos tea most days, organic beet root powder, turmeric with black pepper, cardamom, Ceylon cinnamon, ginger spice, mustard seed spice, sea salt, vitamin D3 4000-5000 IUs, one Magtein capsule in the morning and 2 before bed, Calm magnesium powder before bed, sometimes GABA before bed (still usually doesn’t keep me asleep), and sometimes chamomile or peppermint (usually either one still doesn’t keep me asleep). I exercise 6-7 days per week (usually weight training for an hour on 2-3 days and walking or jogging on other days), I eat about 2000-2500 calories per day with usually about 120-150 g of protein, and I’m off my phone/screens an hour or three before bed. I’ve had sleep issues since elementary school but worsened dramatically in 11th grade. I am gluten-, soy-, and refined sugar-intolerant so always avoid all three. I eat a lot of vegetables, only healthy fats, and I eat usually in the window of 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. I’m a dolphin according to the “Power of Now” book. I don’t know what to try anymore, and as I’m 39 years old, I feel lack of sleep has been ruining my life. A sleep study a year ago ruled out sleep apnea and any other explanation of sleep issues though I didn’t sleep many hours and had a lack of slow-wave sleep proportional to the time asleep. I feel I don’t have much emotional stress, I’m financially stable, have a great support system, etc. Nothing works—melatonin, GABA, lots of magnesium, even Ambien when I was prescribed that once about 14 years ago. I have been knocked unconscious a few times in my life. I have some autistic tendencies (hence the NAC). Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi John -

I'd consider Serotonin Nutrients before bed.

Be sure you are taking your B vitamins, multivitamins and greens in the morning with breakfast.

Ensure you are having a sufficiently decent sized dinner with protein.

Turn off WiFi and put phone on airplane mode.

During the day, I'd consider Optimal Focus - 1 capsule. This supports healthy acetylcholine levels which supports not only healthy focus, but REM sleep. If you're low in REM, you do not dream much.

Low acetylcholine levels are also associated with autistic tendencies.

Hello Dr Lynch, I’m considering trying seratonin nutrients. I suffer chronic migraine (15-20 per month) for 29 years. I have your book, your member ship, apply your diet protocol ( done so many things diet related over the years) and about to order genetic testing. I have lots of your products. Histamine nutrients, histamine probiotics, riboflavin, dim, glutathione lozenge, brain nutrients, optimal focus, b complex mf and lithium orotate. I definitely feel serotonin plays a part in my migraines. I have a very balanced menstrual cycle, apart from surges in migraines, I’m 44 yrs old. So looking at seratonin nutrients and your electrolytes as just got notified that your new formula is available in Australia now. From your book test I have slow COMT (4), slow MAOA (4), MTHFR (2), DAO (2), GST (2), PEMT (1). I take a triptain ( imigran fdt) for relief. Something is definitely going on with my neurotransmitters, can be feeling amazing and going about my day then bang, my brain feels like the hand break goes on the migraine starts. I’m so desperate to get some relief. Thank you in advanced. Reiné

Hi Reine -

Low serotonin levels are associated with triggering migraines.

Consider using Serotonin Nutrients daily in the morning upon waking. See how that performs for you.

Be sure to use only a small amount of the Glutathione Plus lozenge and Brain Nutrients. These are both great for supporting a healthy brain. Too much, though, can trigger an overexcited brain.

Use these only as needed. I enjoy using Glutathione Plus lozenge upon waking. I use Brain Nutrients, 1/4-1/2 lozenge, when I'm working midday and I feel my brain becoming mush from being overworked.

Use Optimal Focus only when you want to have healthy levels of focus. Skip on days you don't need it.

B Complex MF - use only on days where you feel you need support for healthy energy levels.

Dr. Lynch

I have an MTHFR mutation (can't find exactly which one right now) and have been taking B complex and Active B12 for many years. Also have an HSP (Highly sensitive) profile and definite ADHD type symptoms which I have developed coping mechanisms for over the years. I've recently become more curious about these however as I have persistent high blood sugar (A1C ranges 5.7-6.1) despite an immaculate diet and lots of exercise (which helps my mood). I'd like to address the link between low serotonin suggested by my symptoms and the highish blood sugar which is also coupled with low insulin levels suggesting to me a serotonin link. I'm looking at your products Seratonin Nutrients, Sam-e, and Lithium Orotate. Which combination would you suggest and can any or all of these be taken together? Thanks

Hi Trish -

I'd consider switching from a B Complex plus an Active B12 to a comprehensive multivitamin.

Why?

To support additional trace minerals which are needed to support healthy blood sugar and healthy mood.

Consider:

  • stopping B Complex
  • stopping Active B12
  • Multivitamin One MF: this has your B complex, trace minerals, B12 and more. Take 1 capsule with breakfast (on days when you are tired upon waking, feel you need more healthy energy support or when your mood is low). You may find you do well with this 3-5 times a week.
  • Glutathione Lozenge Plus: 1/2 lozenge upon waking each morning
  • Stress Nutrients: consider 1 serving with breakfast each morning
  • Liver Nutrients: 1 serving after dinner
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 serving after dinner

Start there.

You may be right about needing Serotonin Nutrients as well.

That said, try the foundation above before adding in a specialty formulation.

If needing additional support, then add in the Serotonin Nutrients as needed any time of day or night.

Dr. Lynch

I have been researching long-term migraine treatment options and came across a potential connection between my stratagene report, the mechanics of Zomig, and a slowdown in my serotonin pathways. As an alternative to Zomig, I experimented with using SN and had positive results. Now, I'm using SN as a daily prevention method with great success instead of the pulse method. I would like to know if it is safe to take SN daily and if it can be taken alongside Zomig.

Hi Emily -

That's great!

If you're experiencing healthy responses to Serotonin Nutrients, then continue as you are.

Serotonin Nutrients is not as long acting as Optimal Focus or Dopamine Nutrients.

So taking Serotonin Nutrients daily, if needed, is ok to do.

Zomig is a serotonin receptor agonist. This means that it stimulates the serotonin receptor - and thus serotonin activity.

Low serotonin levels are associated with causing migraines. Thus, Zomig supports serotonin activity.

Serotonin Nutrients supports healthy levels of serotonin production, activation and duration in the brain.

Both together may be fine but also may lead to too much serotonin activity.

Talk with your prescribing doctor. You may need to taper down.

Too much serotonin may lead to headaches, irritability and sleep issues. You want a balance.

Hi there, Would this be a good fit for kids who have a lot of anxiety and trouble with being patient? Our son, 7yo, has ADHD - hyperactive and impulsive. But I find his anxiety drives most of his ADHD. We tried Optimla focus with him and it was too stimulating for him. He responded like he had a lot of coffee even with a 1/4 capsule. I was looking at this option to maybe calm down his anxieties which could hopefully in turn also calm him down in general to be able to focus. Thank you for your help.

Hi K -

Looking at the research, impulsivity and moments of anxiousness may be associated with low serotonin levels.

Supporting healthy serotonin levels may support a healthy, balanced mood.

I'd consider 1/4 capsule of Serotonin Nutrients at first.

If he does not do well with Serotonin Nutrients, then you can counter it by using Lithium Orotate.

I recommend getting both Serotonin Nutrients with Lithium Orotate.

Do not use them together. Start with the Serotonin Nutrients. If he gets worse from it, then give a 1/2 capsule of Lithium Orotate.

Other insights:

  • ensure he starts his day with a healthy breakfast consisting of mostly protein. Eggs, goat whey protein, low histamine sausages/meat, goat milk.
  • eliminate the orange juice, box cereals
  • have protein with every meal. Do not give mostly carbohydrate based meals. Moods will always be scattered.
  • eliminate soda of any type. Use a stainless steel water bottle filled with filtered water and add Optimal Electrolyte Unflavored (1/4 scoop with 1/4 scoop of any flavor Optimal Electrolyte he likes)
  • consider 1/2 chewable of Kids Multivitamin Chewable MF with breakfast every other day

Can this be stacked with Brain Nutrients and Dopamine Nutrients, all three together? If so, can I do this daily?

Hi Sarah -

Yes, Serotonin Nutrients can be stacked with Brain and Dopamine Nutrients.

If doing so, I recommend using 1 capsule of Serotonin and Dopamine along with a 1/4 to 1/2 lozenge of Brain Nutrients.

You can do daily IF you feel you need the support.

If taking too much nootropics, you may feel agitated, difficulty sleeping or headaches.

I highly recommend trying each one separately and see how they make you feel.

Then, try stacking two of them and taking note.

Then, try stacking the three of them.

It is recommended to take a least a couple days off a week to rest your brain. It's not good to support it too much constantly as it needs to rest.

Can i take with optimal adrenal by seeking health?

Hi Jennifer -

Optimal Adrenal, now renamed to Stress Nutrients, may be taken alongside Serotonin Nutrients.

Stress Nutrients should be taken daily in the morning consistently to experience full benefits.

This is unlike our usual supplements where we recommend the Pulse Method - where one starts and stops the supplement based on how they are feeling.

Stress Nutrients utilizes a blend of adaptogenic herbs which help adapt a person to stressors. The result is they experience healthy levels of stress.

Adaptogenic herbs perform best with daily, and consistent, use.

I recommend taking 1-3 capsules of Stress Nutrients (or your Optimal Adrenal) in the morning with breakfast.

In terms of Serotonin Nutrients, this nootropic formulation should be used as needed - using the Pulse Method.

Take Serotonin Nutrients during the day to support a healthy mood during menses and otherwise, patience and a calmer approach to things.

Take Serotonin Nutrients before bed to support healthy sleep duration.
