Hi. Both our kids have elevated homocysteine, and we are wondering what we can give them to lower it since they have anxiety, and the homocysteine nutrients have methyls. They also both have high lpa, so we are concerned about future cardiac risk with both markers elevated. Please see below for a summary of each child. Inflammation markers, Vitamin D plasma, folate plasma (>20), thyroid, liver/kidney function, and other lipid panels are normal for both. *Teen girl (17 years old): 11.2 homocysteine, 200 lpa (should be less than 75), MTHFR C677T one copy, B12 plasma level closer to top end of range at 1046, B6 plasma level lower than brother's at 26 (even though they take same multi), eczema, anxiety, ADHD. *Teen boy (16 years old): 11.1 plasma homocysteine, 210 lipoprotein a (should be less than 75), MTHFR C677T one copy, anxiety, ASD and ADHD, B6 plasma levels on top of range at 60.3 (range 3.4-65.2 ug/L), B12 plasma level in the 600-700s range. Any advice would be appreciated. Their homocysteine increased despite taking a digestive enzyme with dinner to help digest nighttime protein for the past year, so that doesn't seem to have helped. | Hi Justin - I hear you. It's possible to lower homocysteine using unmethylated nutrients. Consider:
Support healthy LpA levels, consider:*
In health, Justin - The digestive enzymes will actually enhance protein absorption which then increases homocysteine. In health, |
Can vitamin b6 with magnesium balance my hormones? I am 35 I have had hypothalamic amenorrhea for 15 years I have not had a period at all for 15 years since I was 20. No one told me it would cause me such serious damage. Estrogen deficiency in the bones. In bone density, I had severe osteoporosis of minus 5. Are my bones in a devastating state, irreversibly destroyed? 15 years without estrogen breaks all the bones in the body? Can new bones be built? | Hi Anat - I recommend working with ElizmaLambert.com There are many things to evaluate when working with hormones especially when they are low. Food is first and evaluation of absorption issues is second. Highly recommend working with her. Please reach out. :) In health, |
Hello, I'm working with a functional medicine provider to investigate persistent sleep maintenance insomnia. We performed neurotransmitter and salivary cortisol testing through ZRT Labs, and the following markers stood out: Urinary histamine: ~9x above reference range, consistent with histamine intolerance Tryptophan: Low-normal GABA: Below optimal Xanthurenic acid: Elevated, suggesting a functional B6 (pyridoxal-5-phosphate) deficiency Despite adherence to a low-histamine diet and maintaining good sleep hygiene, I continue to wake fully alert between 3:00–5:30 AM, with difficulty returning to sleep. Sleep onset is significantly worse following intake of histamine-releasing foods (e.g., chocolate, slow-cooked meats). My provider suspects impaired histamine clearance via the HNMT pathway, likely due to insufficient B6 availability. The plan is to initiate low-dose B6 supplementation (microdosing), as B6 is a required cofactor for HNMT activity. I’m otherwise asymptomatic—no GI complaints, mood issues, or systemic inflammation—and thus, GI testing hasn’t been prioritized. I’m genetically slow COMT and predisposed to sluggish histamine clearance in general, so I’m cautious about introducing supplements that might make me feel overstimulated or worsen sleep. I’m also hesitant to take B6 due to concerns about toxicity. My questions are: Would it be advisable to request a serum or plasma B6 (or P5P) from my PCP before supplementing? How can I address the risk of B6 toxicity while still supporting histamine clearance through the HNMT pathway? Should we continue testing beyond neurotransmitter levels (e.g. , mycotoxin, hormonal panel, etc.)? | Hi K - Sleep is key and I hear you that you're wanting to get that better. High histamine prior to bed is definitely an issue and trigger for insomnia. Vitamin B6 toxicity is not an issue at amounts found in our supplements - also the active form of P5P is less likely to cause an issue compared to pyridoxal HCL and we most commonly use the P5P form. You want to support healthy histamine levels prior to sleep. Here are some things to consider:
Trying this for a few days will let you know if this supports healthy duration of sleep or if you need additional support.* If you need additional support for healthy duration of sleep, I have two other suggestions for you to consider:
If you're a woman (sorry - not sure :) ), then low progesterone and high estrogen can be problematic for sleep. So you'd need to support healthy estrogen for this and progesterone. In health, |
I purchased this B6 and want to know what is the difference between pyridoxal 5-phosphate and Pyridoxine? Is P5P more safe at a dose of 25mg compared to Pyridoxine? 10mg has been recommended as a safe upper tolerable intake and I am wondering if this has something to do with a specific form of B6? | Hi Felicia - The P5P is the active form of B6 while the other one needs to be made into active by the body. B6 should be used, as like any supplement, on an as-needed basis. One doesn't take B6 in this amount every day for months. They take it to restore healthy levels of B6 and then they pause until they need it again. In health, |
Can kids take this if b6 on oats test is below the means on the oats test? Not flagged as low but right next to it at 1.7 for 8 year old | Hi Alison - I recommend using our Kids Multivitamin Chewable instead as it is more suitable for kids. Give 1 chewable with breakfast. You don't want to give an excessive amount. In health, |
Al tomar vitamina B6 experimento dolor de cabeza intenso, aún en minimas cantidades, cuál podria ser la causas? Tengo una fuerte intolerancia a las histaminas y azufre, problemas con la metilación y una fuerte disbiosis intestinal | When taking vitamin B6 I experience an intense headache, even in minimal quantities, what could be the cause? I have a strong intolerance to histamines and sulfur, problems with methylation and a strong intestinal dysbiosis Hi Dei - I am not sure. I suspect your microbiome is using the B6 against you by making chemicals which are aggravating. Consider supporting healthy gut health by using:

I'm currently using this product, but I have just heard that B6 accumulates in your body, and excessive amounts can lead to serious problems. This was from several people who did end up with those issues and one was in and out of hospital from a product that contained 12x daily requirement. Could you comment on this, please? Thanks | Hi Callum - Vitamin B6 is water soluble. I've talked with some of my colleagues who are more versed in this area than I am. They agree with me that B6 gets blamed for nerve issues but it's not the cause. It's associated but it is not causative. High B6 levels are associated with inflammatory processes - so it's easy to blame. Here are a bunch of papers on B6: In health, |
Hi there, would this be OK to take for histamine and mcas?thanks | Hi Stephanie - I hear that some people do well with the B6 and others do not. Instead of taking a specific B6, I would consider our Multivitamin One MF (we are out of stock until end of May though...) You may use this instead - and it's surprisingly effective for supporting healthy energy and mood.* In health, |
Hi, any idea why P-5-P would cause insomnia worse? I take it in the morning too. | Hi Vicki - I do not know the precise reasons as B6 is used by many enzymes in the human body. I recommend pinpointing that it is in fact the B6 causing this issue for you. It may not be. B6 usually supports healthy sleep. I'd consider our Optimal Magnesium and take 1 capsule before bed to support healthy sleep. In health, |
