Optimal Focus Dr. Lynch Q&AUpdated 3 hours ago

Question
Answer
Hi! My 9 year old son with ADHD and autism has problems with both hyperactivity and inattention. He can be very aggitated and has a lot of impulsivity. We have tried kids optimal focus. We started with a half chewable. School noticed a nice difference when we took 2 chewables. He was calmer and did the school-work, great! It is wonderful! But he is not very fond of the taste. Is optimal focus and option? What is the difference between the two? And how about Alpha-gpc, what amounts is it? I have heard it could increase the risk of stroke.

Hi Monika -

Thanks for your question.

We will work on improving the taste. Herbs and cholines do not taste good and we use natural flavors so it's harder to make taste amazing.

Since he's doing two chewables, then he can definitely take 1 capsule of Optimal Focus. That is the same amount he's getting now.

I'd switch him over to 1 capsule of Optimal Focus after his breakfast.

The amounts of choline in this supplement are definitely not going to increase the risk of stroke - far far from - not an issue.

The levels of TMAO can be measured and if they are indeed elevated, then supporting a healthy gut with probiotics and polyphenols is important.

To support his gut, which is needed and a good idea, consider:

  • ProBiota Bifido: 1 capsule in the morning upon waking.

I'm so happy he's doing well!

My 16 year old daughter has been taking your Optimal Multivitamin Chewable daily for years. In the evenings I have been giving her magnesium glycinate, as she has been struggling with focus when studying and ocd. We did a Max Gen lab on her recently and it stated that she has a slow COMT. I just purchased your Optimal Focus product (adult version) due to her age and weight vs the chewable, but I was curious if I could open the capsule and start her with half the dose at first? She does not have APOE variant. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi Gina -

OCD is typically associated with low serotonin levels so supporting healthy serotonin is key for this.*

Inattention due to a hyperactive mind is typically associated with low acetylcholine so supporting healthy acetylcholine levels is helpful.* Optimal Focus supports healthy acetylcholine levels.*

You may open a capsule of Optimal Focus and mix it in a bite of food. You can also use the Kids Optimal Focus and give her 1 chewable as that is equivalent to 1/2 a capsule.

Given that you already have the Optimal Focus, using that makes sense.

Please read the How to Use Optimal Focus guide here:

Have a 10 year old daughter who has slow comt and mthfr. We have been using Hydroxo B12 with magnesium and L theanine to help with mood and control her add in school and at home. We still see some mood swings and attention is still hard, would this be a good supplement to add? Would we keep doing Ltheanine as well? If there are any other supplements you’d recommend for mood and attention that would be great!

Hi Brian -

Good question.

I'd pause the Hydroxo B12 for now unless there is a known vitamin B12 deficiency.

My daughter struggles with impulse control. We homeschool and she has never been diagnosed with anything but I think she has adhd or add. Would this be helpful, mostly with the impulse control and being less frantic?

Hi Courtney -

There are many factors to consider here.

Movement is key for kids so make sure she has exercised for 30 minutes in some form prior to sitting down and studying. Trampoline, team sports, going for a run, table tennis with a sibling or parent, dancing, yoga, anything.

In terms of supplements to consider healthy impulse control, consider:

I'd use the Kids Optimal Focus over the capsule version
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/kids-optimal-focus

Additionally, look into Optimal Electrolyte once a day to support healthy hydration as hydration levels are key for cognitive support.*

Hi Dr . My son is currently taking focus factor dose as Recomended on bottle he is 8 yrs. old entering 3rd grade . Teachers are recommending me to medicate him I really don’t want to please advise me on how I can help with his focus any other supplements I can give him . This is a review from my son’s teachers , child demonstrates significant working memory challenges that affect multiple academic tasks: • Sentence Composition & Spelling: He often begins writing a sentence or spelling a word but then loses track of his thought midstream. • Following Instructions: When given multi-step directions he struggles to retain what was asked and frequently forgets the task requirements. He has a hard time staying focused and on task in class and sitting in his chair. Thank you !

Hi Donna -

We can help your son - glad you asked for some guidance here.

I looked at the Focus Factor ingredients - it's very weak and low quality ingredients.

For supplementation for him, consider:

  • stopping Focus Factor - I'd honestly just throw it away.
  • Kids Optimal Focus. start with reading this guide so you know how to introduce it to him and what to expect: https://www.seekinghealth.com/cdn/shop/files/How_To_Use_-_Optimal_Focus_1.pdf?v=9656194784056734519
  • in short, start with 1/4 a tablet and see how he does with it. Then increase as needed. Teachers, himself and you will notice changes in him the same day.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving in the morning upon waking and you can put in his water bottle with filtered water as well. Orange and Berry are most popular.

Please read the Guide - it will help you and him a lot :)

A few things you can consider for him:

Would you recommend this for innattentive ADHD? And is there anything else that could be helpful for rejection sensitivity that is so common with ADHD? Thank you.

Hi JS -

I would not no.

I instead would look at supporting healthy dopamine and norepinephrine levels.

Inattentive ADHD and rejection sensitivity are both associated with low dopamine levels.

Acetylcholine deficiency is associated more with hyperactivity and Optimal Focus supports healthy acetylcholine levels.*

Consider:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 lozenge upon waking and another 1/2 midday if needed - supports healthy dopamine levels.*
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule after breakfast and another midday if needed - supports healthy dopamine levels.*
  • protein with every meal especially breakfast -and lower carb intake. High carbs and low protein are associated with big neurotransmitter swings and inattention.

Is this product recommended for 70 yr olds in good health? I and continue to work. I have had untreated ADHD for most of my life , but after COVID , it seems to have gotten worse. I already take high omega 3,s, PC , PQQ, tumeric , and Citicholine . I began these 8 yrs ago after being poisoned by fluoroquinolones. Would any of these be an issue taking with Optimal Focus?

Hi Sarah -

100% yes.

I would stop the citicholine - you won't need that while on Optimal Focus.

I have been taking the Bile nutrients, Ox bile nutrients, calcium D glucarate and serotonin nutrients that you suggested for my severe constipation & constant bloating I’ve had for 8 yrs. For two weeks it helped me to have a formed stool every day for the first time in forever ( didn’t feel like I was completely emptied but so much better)! Then I had my daughter and two little kiddos visit and things got a little off again, so I started taking senna or miralax to be able to empty. I’ve started back last night trying not to take the laxatives, I have been listing to your YouTube today with Dr Tyna and curious about the optimal focus, you mentioned how it helped with dopamine I believe? Maybe this was why I had a problem trying to take a motility drug the dr’s had me try ( Motegrity-Seretonin type 5HT4) cause bad depression for me. But it’s suppose to help with colonic peristalsis. Maybe the Optimal focus might help? I just got results back from a trio smart breath test and for the 1st time in 8 yrs it wasnt methane dominant but had high levels of hydrogen. I had taken Rifaximin with Metronidazole 14 days with NAC and then took Allimed with NAC for a month. I think this knocked the methane down but now I still have high hydrogen, should I be focusing on breath test or is this all dirty gene related issues? Upping riboflavin has helped with hair growth & methylation but I also heard you say B2 is a cofactor for MTHFR ( I’m homozygous C677t , slow MTR & MTRR but fast COMT) because if it’s deficient your MTHFR want perform & B2 has to convert to active form Riboflavin FAD & that is done by the Thyroid (thyroxine) so you cant be Hypothyroid. Last July I started having problems with High TSH and was put on 25 mcg levothyroxine after taking a bottle I started feeling bad and had levels checked and TSH dropped too low. This has happened several times so now I break the levo tablet in half. I think the Thyroid prob is coming from lack of nutrients being absorbed because of gut issues. But I also think the gut problems are coming from dirty gene related issues. Results from my StrataGene test are very complicated and confusing! I have studied your book sooooo much and listened to all the podcast I can find. I sure would love some more guidance. Thank you

Hi Lynda -

I hear you.

Guidance is definitely helpful when it's individualized.

Consider telemedicine consults with either:

  • Elizma Lambert
  • Chris Bramich of Vital Foundations

Both are excellent and well versed with StrateGene and complex symptoms.

The gut is definitely a major factor.

Since you were doing well with the support you mentioned, I'd get back to that.

I'd also ask, what happened during the visit with your daughter? Stress, exhaustion, over eating, poor sleep schedule, etc. All of these factors are key triggers.

Please read this Digestion Guide - very handy:
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0010/0250/4310/files/Digestion-Guide_REV040525.pdf?v=1743793774

Low serotonin can contribute to constipation and gut motility - which then triggers SIBO growth.

Read the product description on Serotonin and see how many of those symptoms match with you. If many, then adding that in may be supportive.

I would put StrateGene on hold for now unless you get professional support from either Elizma or Chris. The recommendations above could help you a lot.

Thank you for attaching the optimal focus 'how to use doc' - so helpful :) I just got a bit confused, do you know if it would be okay to take with an inhaler that has Formoterol in it? It's hard to understand on google if its Anticholinergic or not. Thanks!

Hi Emma -

I found this:

Individuals taking Formoterol, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA) bronchodilator, can potentially use acetylcholine precursors or supplements that inhibit acetylcholine breakdown, under the guidance of their healthcare provider.

Here's why and how this might be considered:

  1. Formoterol's Effect on Acetylcholine:
Formoterol and other beta2-agonists have been shown to enhance the release of acetylcholine from parasympathetic nerves in the airways.

This increased acetylcholine release can contribute to bronchodilation, a primary effect of Formoterol.

The inhaler will be quite localized to the lungs. The Optimal Focus will be more full body healthy acetylcholine support.*

Consider using the Kids Optimal Focus and start low - with 1/2 to 1 chewable.

I'm keen to start this soon!, but wondered if there were any medications or health conditions that this supplement would interact with. With thanks, Emma

Hi! I’m taking this and it’s been great. However, now I’m looking for a stress support supplement since I’m having some mild panick attacks (I can control them, but would like to avoid this). What stress support supplement can I combine this with? Thanks!

Hi Romanella -

Awesome to hear to that Optimal Focus has been supportive for you.

Let's further support you.

Consider:

  • Stress Nutrients: take 3 capsules in the morning after a protein based breakfast to support a healthy response to stress.*
  • Lithium Orotate: 1 capsule after any meal any time of day or night to support a healthy stress response.*
  • Watch how much Optimal Focus you are taking as it may increase feelings of anxiety if taking too much or too often. Stagger how much you are taking and on days where you seem focused, skip it and do not take.

Hi! Wondering if optimal focus is the right supplement for me. I struggle with executive functioning issues and have an inattentive adhd diagnosis, plus mild autism, plus anxiety. I have trouble with hyper focusing, shifting between tasks, horrible working memory, and getting overwhelmed. I tested heterozygous for both MTHFR genes, homozygous for MTHFD1, and have slow COMT and slow MAOA. I ordered the methyl-free multivitamin and feel that it definitely helps me have a calm energy and more focus, but I still am irritable by the end of the day. I really struggle when multiple people need my attention or are talking at the same time, or when I am interrupted in the middle of doing something. Would the optimal focus be good for me?

Hi Collins -

Well stated question. Thank you for the detail.

I do think a low amount of Optimal Focus could be useful for you. You may want to use the Kids Optimal Focus and start with 1/2 to 1 chewable after some food.

I'm also thinking that Phosphatidyl Serine or Stress Nutrients could really be supportive for you.

Ensure you're having a very solid protein based breakfast without any caffeine.

If you're feeling you need caffeine in the morning, consider 1/4 to 1/2 a lozenge of Energy Nutrients immediately upon waking up. This way you will see you won't need the coffee ;)

I also recommend drinking a glass of Optimal Electrolyte 1-2 times a day as it has the added magnesium, creatine, taurine, potassium which are very supportive for a healthy brain and mood.*

One capsule of Fish Oil as well after dinner to support healthy cell membranes and neurotransmission.*

Keep me posted.

This should be quite supportive for you.

Use the supplements on an as-needed basis - not daily.

I'm looking for a supplement to help with hoarding tendencies. Unable to sort, organize and make decisions. I've already started taking Brain Nutrients and Dopamine Nutrients. Is Optimal Focus the next thing to try?

Hi Lori -

Hoarding is actually more associated with serotonin deficiency.

That said, we show in research this is the case but in the end, we're actually affecting many neurotransmitters when we are supporting just one.

I would state that Serotonin Nutrients taken in the morning after breakfast and another before bed could support healthy serotonin levels.*

Here is a paper talking about serotonin genetic variations and hoarding:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32092211/

The researchers found that the reduced serotonin transport and reduced serotonin activity are associated with hoarding.

I gave my 4yo son the Kids optimal focus and noticed an increase in moodiness and aggression. I really want to support his body, as I'm highly suspicious he has the MTHFR mutation - I'm homozygous A1298C. I started at half a tablet and did not notice a decrease in behavioral concerns so I increased to a whole tablet, after 2 day on half a tab. Upon increase it seemed he was more easily agitated and aggressive. What can I do to support him?

Hi Stephanie -

Too much acetylcholine can definitely trigger irritability. It's a sweet spot.

We have a great resource now that helps you troubleshoot Optimal Focus and Kids Optimal Focus.

Go to the product page and under the main image, you'll see 'How to use Kids Optimal Focus' Download PDF.

Do that and read through.

That should help you a ton.

After reading, apply what matches well for him and if need more help, ask me another question.

Hi Dr. Lynch- My 23yr old son with ADD currently using nicotine pouches to calm and concentrate. Wants to switch to Opt.Focus. Can he start while still using the nicotine pouches? If not, how does he transition? - racing thoughts - talks fast -struggles to listen -difficult to concentrate Thank you

Hi Molly -

He can combine yes; however, he should try taking 1 capsule of Optimal Focus by itself without anything else and see how he feels.

I can say, from hearing many college kids, that using Optimal Focus has helped them immensely.

He should be able to transition straight across - stop one and start the other.

Hello, I have a question regarding addiction and how helpful Optimal Focus would be please? The video of vaping addiction was shared with me and can see how Optimal Focus would be helpful but I am unsure how this applies with cannabis. How similarly does acetylcholine work in the role of cannabis addiction as opposed to vaping? Is it the same mechanism? I really appreciate your knowledge and support around this as I'm desperately trying to help my son. He was self-medicating for undiagnosed adhd and unfortunately became addicted to cannabis. He is getting angry and aggressive and agitated when suffering withdrawal from cannabis but he really wants to get off it. Would this product help? Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you Fiona

Hi Fiona -

Cannabis has different mechanisms.

There are strains which:

  • relax - Indica ("in da couch")
  • stimulate - Sativa

If he's using Indica, then he may need something to support a sense of healthy calmness like Lithium Orotate and/or Stress Nutrients.*

If he's using Sativa, then he may need something to support a sense of healthy motivation, focus and mood with Dopamine Nutrients.

Hoping someone will have some insight into why I am reacting to this product the way I am. I am 3 years post-partum with my last baby and have been dealing with some perimenopause symptoms (low energy and brain fog). As I took the Methyl Free Prenatal during my last pregnancy and while nursing, I thought to try a couple other Seeking Health products to address this. I researched your various products before purchasing the Optimal Focus, Brain nutrients, Energy Nutrients, Multi One MF, and Histamine support. I have not taken them all at once, but rather taken one type for a couple of days to see how I feel/respond, stopped for a couple days and then tried another thing. I've done this for several rounds and discovered that I tolerate the Histamine (1/day) and occasional use of the Energy Nutrients. But every time I try to start taking the Optimal Focus or the Brain Nutrients or the Multi One MF, I start to have mood issues (increased feelings of anger/irritability) within a few hours. I end up taking a couple of doses of Skullcap to counter the effect. The next day I'm much better provided I don't take it again. I carry one copy of the less bad MTHFR mutation if that is relevant. Does anyone have any suggestions? I do eat pastured animal protein daily so is it possibly I'm getting enough B vitamins via my diet so this is just sending me over the top? My daily vitamins otherwise include magnesium, D3/K2, Liposomal C, Ubiquinol, and low dose iodoral/selenium (a few times a week, not daily.) And quercetin during allergy season. Thanks!

Hi Abigail -

I suspect the fluctuating hormones are contributing to fluctuating dopamine levels. The Optimal Focus supports healthy acetylcholine levels - and acetylcholine can influence dopamine by raising it or increasing its release.

Right before ovulation is when estrogen levels increase the most, which is when dopamine increases the most and if taking Optimal Focus, then that may further increase dopamine further.

I suspect you may want to evaluate your hormone levels.

While it may sound odd, I'd consider giving Testosterone Nutrients a shot.

Consider:

  • Testosterone Nutrients: 1 capsule after breakfast and 1 capsule after dinner. 1 week on and 1 week off. This may support healthy mood, healthy energy and healthy cognition.*

  • Energy Nutrients: take this always away from food - and don't eat within 1 hour of taking it.

  • Optimal Electrolyte: be sure to hydrate. This is key for healthy brain function as 1% dehydration contributes to symptoms of all types.*

Dr. Lynch

Dear Dr Lynch, Thank you for all that you do, it has truly been life changing finding your life work. I found you after being tested positive for the mthfr gene mutation and after many years of struggling with depression and anxiety. I found it was mostly fatigue due to my body's inability to detox properly. Glutathione changed my life. Also your histamine supplements helped alot with my struggles with pms- mostly mood struggles and fatigue. I read that it is likely due to the connection between prostaglandins and histamine. A bit more work to do here for our women especially because conventional medicine advises an SSRI and birth control for a woman struggling with pms and mood symptoms. As this may "work", it is not something I am willing to do as I feel innately that there is something better for woman's health that can change the world. I am currently taking gut nutrients, methylb12/methylfolate, glutathione, optimal electrolyte, vitamin c in the am and histamine digest, magnesium and probiotics histaminex at night. This month my pms disappeared, which is life changing, thank you. I do still struggle a bit with waking up in the mornings and getting motivated to do tasks and read. I tried dopamine nutrients with brain nutrients and fell asleep. I think may be due to elevated histamine as the same thing happened to me when I took sam-e for a week. I think other parts of my methylation pathway are dirty. I am looking for a bit more help. Would you suggest adding optimal focus or energy nutrients to my current regimen above? My most sincere gratitude to you and your work. Thank you. Sincerely, Jaclyn

Hi Jaclyn -

You're welcome :) Thank you for sharing a bit of your journey. It's stories like yours that keep me going.

My wife responds somewhat similar to you with the Dopamine Nutrients and Brain Nutrients. It supports her mood for some time and then she gets sleepy.

I just learned yesterday that low hormones - estrogen and testosterone - are both associated with low dopamine.

I believe that Testosterone Nutrients may be very supportive for you.

Consider:

  • in addition to what is working for you currently, add in Testosterone Nutrients
  • Testosterone Nutrients: 1 capsule after dinner. Start here for a few days and see how you feel. If needed, add another capsule after a protein based breakfast.

Read the reviews on Testosterone Nutrients. Many of them are from women. We just released this product about a month or so ago and it's proving to be extremely supportive.

Hi - my teenage son is suffering with a 'crazy brain' which he 'wishes he didn't have'. He has been diagnosed with ADD, suffers with OCD intrusive thoughts, can't manage his uncomfortable thoughts with CBT - they are always on and dominating making him feel very anxious. He suffers from emotional regulation issues and acute mood swings. Sleep is fine. I have listed some of his SNPs below. I was wondering on an appropriate protocol to support him and was thinking: Choline metabolism issues and ADHD / focus problems - Optimal Focus ; Incomplete cortisol recovery - the stress nutrients; Mood stabilizer- Lithium orotate Compromised Detox - glutathione plus Histamine intolerance - histamine x Methylation - Methyl B12 with L-Methylfolate But I am wondering what would support his glutamate . Specifically I am wondering if the he may be struggling with glutamate clearance which is resulting in OCD intrusive thoughts - NAC and magnesium and Omegas? And, with the dopamine SNPSs and ADHD diagnosis - should I be thinking about dopamine nutrients even though he has slow MAOA activity ? Any guidance appreciated. Thank you so much in advance. SNPs: MAOA rs6323 T - reduced MAOA activity Stress: [ FKBP5 rs1360780 TT] & [FKBP5 rs3800373 CC] - Incomplete cortisol recovery; risk of depression; anxiety Inflammation & mood - [IL6 rs1800796 GG] Increased depression with inflammation Decreased BDNF - rs6265 CT Dopamine - potentially lower Dopamine receptor sensitivity - DRD4 rs1800955 CC Dopamine - SLC6A3 rs27072 TT - higher dopamine transporter (DAT1) activity Serotonin - IDO1 rs3808606 AA - tryptophan pushed into kynurenine pathway instead of serotonin production. low Dopa Decarboxylase activity DDC rs921451 (T TT) - potentially lower levels of dopamine / serotonin SNAP25 rs3746544 TT - lower dopamine & acetylcholine efficiency Altered glutamate transporter function - SLC1A1 rs301430 CT - potentially leading to higher glutamate levels in the brain Altered glutamate transporter function - SLC1A2 rs3794087 GT - Low SLC1A2 activity = Potentially too much glutamate in the brain Altered glutamate transporter function - SLC1A2 rs4354668 GG - lowest glutamate clearance Choline - various choline SNPs affecting methylation and reduced turnover of methionine to PC. Weaker Detox capacity - GSTA1 rs3957357 AA - lowest GSTA1 expression MTHFR rs1801131 GT - Decreased enzyme Minor decrease in COMT Various DAO and HMNT snps in relation to histamine

Hi Poto -

Thank you for the detail.

I'm thinking we start pretty simple and see if we can make some progress.

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 to 1 upon waking in the morning
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking in the morning along with another midday in the afternoon. Can mix in a water bottle and sip throughout the day. Use filtered water. Berry and Orange are most popular.
  • Lithium Orotate: 1 capsule after a protein based breakfast. This supports healthy functioning of many of the things you shared.
  • put phone on airplane mode at night
  • put phone in LTE mode - remove the 5G activation
  • turn off WiFi at night during sleep.
  • do not use airpods and limit use of bluetooth connected devices.

These do make an impact on the brain.

Try these for a bit and report back.

Hi! This supplement seems to give me headaches. However, I know many other people that take it and do not experience this. Is there a certain gene or ingredient sensitivity that make this supplement cause headaches in some individuals?

Hi Hayden -

Yes, you're correct and glad you're aware that this may be contributing to your headaches.

Here's what I recommend you consider:

  • Did it give you headaches the very first day you took it? If not, then we know that you may be just taking it too often or too much now.
  • If you got headaches the very first day, then did you try taking less? If you took only 1 capsule, consider opening the capsule and putting 1/2 onto a bite of food.
  • If you're taking it every day, take it only on days you need it and don't take it on days where you feel focused.
  • I find that I do well typically with 1 capsule after a protein based breakfast on days I feel I need it and skip when I don't. I take it only 1-2 x a week.

It's the entire supplement that supports healthy blood flow and healthy acetylcholine levels - which, if too much, can contribute to headaches.

Hi Dr. Lynch, I have read that bacopa can affect sperm quality and numbers- do you think this is safe for my husband to continue to take while trying to conceive? Thanks!

Stephanie -

I dug into the research on the Bacopa more on male fertility.

Looks like the research was done on mice.

The mice that were affected negatively with bacopa were taking 250mg/kg which is a lot.
source: https://journals.lww.com/ijmr/fulltext/2018/48001/natural_products_in_regulation_of_male_fertility.12.aspx

There is also a study which shows the beneficial effect of bacopa on healthy sperm in mice:
"Bacopa monnieri (BM) is used in traditional medicine as nerve tonic. We have recently shown that CDRI-08, a standardized extract of BM, improves testicular functions and epididymal sperm quality in Parkes (P) mice."
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0006291X17320673

As usual, the dose makes a big difference.

Your husband will be way under the amount used which is negatively affecting the health of his sperm.

Dr. Lynch

Hi Stephanie -

I do believe he can use Optimal Focus, yes, if he also uses Optimal Man in conjunction.

Consider:

  • Optimal Focus: start with just 1 capsule. See how he feels from that. I typically only need one.
If he doesn't experience the benefit he's looking for, he may need Dopamine Nutrients instead.

Read the product descriptions for both Optimal Focus and Dopamine Nutrients to see which boxes check off the best for him.

Optimal Man supports healthy sperm and healthy fertility in men and is a general multivitamin for men as well.*

Consider a plan to support you both:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 to 1 upon waking for you both to support healthy antioxidant levels.*
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1-2 servings a day for you both to support healthy hydration, magnesium, potassium and creatine which are a must for fertility.*
  • Optimal Man: 2 capsules after breakfast for him and, if needing healthy energy support or healthy cognitive support in the afternoon, take 2 after lunch - otherwise skip the afternoon dose.
  • Optimal Prenatal or Prenatal Essentials: for you - take in divided doses after breakfast and lunch. Choose Optimal Prenatal if you need significant nutritional support or Prenatal Essentials if you only need general nutritional support.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner for both of you

That should help you both hold a little one in your arms in about a year :)

Hi Dr Ben, just wondering can the adult dose optimal focus be given as a half dose to an 11 yr old? He won't do a chewable. Also, can it be taken at the same time as respiradone, intuniv (Guanfacine) and sertraline? He's not on any stimulants such as ritalin. thanks.

Hi Katie -

I'd consider 1/2 a capsule of Optimal Focus mixed into a bite of food for him.

It can be given alongside these medications.

I'm wondering if the Respiradone may be too potent for him if he is having focus difficulties. You may want to talk with the prescribing doctor to lower that by 1/2 to see if that supports him.

Lithium Orotate may be something to look into as possibly supporting a healthy mental response overall.* You would only use this if the prescribing doctor okays stopping the respiradone and sertraline. You would not add this to it.

Hi is this safe to take while pregnant or trying to conceive?

Hi G

While trying to conceive, yes.

While pregnant, no. This is due to the herbs not studied during pregnancy. Once confirmed pregnant, discontinue use until you’re breastfeeding.

While pregnant, consider using Alpha GPC choline without the additional nutrients and herbs. It won’t work nearly as well but it will be some support.

Hi Dr. Ben, What would the dosage be for a 6 and 9 year old. Looking to order for the family. You're still out of the kids formula. Thank you

Hi Doris -

Ugh - it has to be arriving soon.

Please do sign up to be notified. It should be on its way.

For now, consider:

  • Optimal Focus: 1/2 a capsule mixed into a BITE of food say organic applesauce. I'd start there.
  • make sure you read up on the Brain Nutrients as well - along with the Q and A there.
  • if your kids are lacking motivation, drive and sleepy, then they need to be supported with things which support healthy levels of motivation, drive and energy such as folate and B12.* These are found in Brain Nutrients and I'd start them on 1/4 to 1/2 a lozenge in the morning.
  • if your kids are fine in these areas but are task switching, constantly moving about, interrupting and not able to comprehend what they are learning, they need healthy levels of acetylcholine.* Optimal Focus supports healthy levels of acetylcholine.
  • You may combine both of them if needed.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Hi Dr. Lynch, I messaged you previously about using Optimal Focus for my kid. We just switched my little one over yesterday from alpha GPC and are seeing good results. I'm also using Optimal Focus and loving it, though I need to figure out how to not crash between doses. My husband suffers from long virus too. He does well when he takes Alpha GPC (1 cap) in the morning but he gets very tired at the end of the day and doesn't sleep well when he takes it. If he takes a second cap of Alpha GPC then he can't sleep at all. His Nutreval indicates that he has low serotonin and low B6. He is very sensitive to P5P supplementation and cannot tolerate any more than 5mg, sometimes less. He is able to sleep with CDP Choline but it doesn't have the same effect of mental alertness like alpha GPC. He usually wakes up tired, achy all over, and stumbles to gain balance (he's only 44y). His bowel movements happen late at night, so he is unable to sleep earlier. He's afraid Optimal Focus would make things worse. What would you recommend? He has almost finished a bottle of Gut Nutrients.

Hi YT -

Glad you're loving Optimal Focus!

Have you left a product review, yet?! :) I'd love to see one from you!

How not to crash between doses:

  • Keep using it. Don't take a break at this time as you really need it. Your brain sounds like it's craving it so keep using it.
  • On days where you feel you don't need it, skip it.

A couple ideas for your husband:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving in the morning upon waking and another midday. There is no B6 in this.
  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking and another 1/2 lozenge later in the day. There is no B6 in this.
  • Optimal Man: 1 capsule with his protein based breakfast. 1 capsule will provide about 3.5 mg of B6 as P5P.
  • Optimal PC: 1 capsule in the evening before bed
  • Bile Nutrients: 2 capsules before dinner
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Lithium Orotate: 1 capsule before bed to support healthy serotonin levels and healthy sleep along with healthy brain function.*

This combination for him is very supportive of all body systems.

I have been taking 150 mg. of wellbutrin for more than 10 years. My desire for a full life is not in me anymore. I find myself more sedentary. I feel like I may need a boost and would like to try your natural supplement. My memory is slipping away, ( going into a room and forgetting why I came in there}. I would rather stay in bed and let the day go by. Oh, yes I am almost 76. I just had a complete blood panel and nothing seemed out of order. What do you think, Dr, Lynch?

Hi Debra -

I hear you and happy you reached out.

Talk with your doctor about your dosage of Wellbutrin. This medication can cause those feelings. It may be best for you to reduce or stop that medication. Find out what's best with your doctor's guidance.

Consider:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 a lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving twice a day - morning and afternoon
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule after a protein based breakfast
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

This combination supports healthy motivation, healthy memory and healthy mood.*

:)

You should feel a difference the same day you take them!

Hello! I bought "optimal focus" on Amazon.de. First I noticed a strange smell inside the jar, later I took the capsule in my mouth and it had a strange taste, I decided to open it and I almost threw up, it was a terrible smell that still lingers in front of me. The question is - why is there no warning about this? The composition seemed great to me, but what's the point if you can't even swallow it because of the taste.

Hi Igor -

Please email my customer support team with the Lot number from the bottom of your bottle.

I want to make sure that you have a fresh lot.

There is DHA from algae in the Optimal Focus - but we use a scented dessicant in the container which smells like peppermint. I suspect maybe one of the capsules broke inside the container?

Optimal Focus is not meant to be taken outside the capsule due to the DHA smell and taste.

We have a Kids Optimal Focus coming out soon that is a chewable - and it does not have the DHA in it because it's impossible to hide the taste of algae.

Hello Dr. Lynch. 53 yo, 1 year into post-menopause. ADD on 10mg Adderall XR for years which "stopped working" a year ago. I purchased the Nootropics bundle 2 weeks ago and stopped Adderall. I tried Dopamine Nutrients for 2 days. 1 day off. Serotonin Nutrients for 2 days. 1 day off. Then Optimal Focus for 2 days. Without telling my husband what I was doing he made the comment "you've been really nice to me the last 2 days" after the 2 days that I took Optimal Focus. I should have asked you how to try these out instead of coming up with my own plan.... But here are my observations: 1) on dopamine nutrients I didn't notice anything until late afternoon/evening when I was extra angry and irritable + low grade headache all day. ( I never get headaches for what that's worth). In your ADHD webinar I believe you said I can counter that headache with niacin. 2) on serotonin nutrients I felt calmer/more peaceful and much less sad. 3) on optimal focus I actually felt happy and smiled and was productive. Most days my brains just spins and spins and I can't get anything done. If I had to describe myself in 1 word it would be OVERWHELMED. All the time. So here is my actual question: I was recently prescribed 0.25 estradiol patch and progesterone 200mg at night. Should I stop the nootropics and see how I do on HRT? I can't thank you enough for all the work you've done and shared with all of us. Your wisdom, curiousity and generousity are admirable and much appreciated.

Hi Jen -

I love the fact that you did experiment.

That information you learned is way more effective than me guiding you - and possibly guiding you incorrectly.

I love the Nootropic Bundle for exactly the reasons you described - and you used it beautifully.

You tried each one and noted how they made you feel.

I do agree that you should also stop the nootropics and see how you do on the HRT.

Then, after settling in, then try the Serotonin Nutrients for a bit - and then stop - and then add in the Optimal Focus a bit - then stop.

Then use them as you feel when you need them - and you'll learn and know from the experiments you're doing - which are awesome.

People feel they have to 'be right' the first time when buying supplements - and I get that as they need to be purchased.

I look at it as college and learning is also paid for and it teaches you things.

Then, if you feel worse from a supplement - you learned something. And - you likely can find a home for it by giving it to a friend or a family member who likely will get the opposite effects you did and you may help them immensely.

Hi, my 33 year old, 6'4 husband is looking for a more natural way to manage ADHD like symptoms. He has been struggling for years with low energy, motivation, drive and focus, tends to be hyperverbal and hyperfixated on hobbies that interest him however very little initiative and tends to procrastinate everyday tasks he finds "boring." He is struggling from sugar and carb cravings and struggles to start a healthy workout routine. He also struggles with social anxiety and extreme irritability at times. If something is out of his site he tends to forget it in his mind. We did try one to two capsules a day of dopamine nutrients a few months ago which seemed to help however I feel like maybe it increased hyperactivity but still not enough to get certain tasks completed, and increase in irritability. I'm really not sure what is the right combination and wondering if he would do better with this focus supplement. Thanks! Sincerely a concerned and tired spouse.

Hi Dina -

I hear you.

I've a few things for you to consider for him - and this is what I do often as a 50 year old man:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking most days. I skip it if I feel great in the morning otherwise in it goes. Bite it a couple times, let it dissolve and then swallow.*
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving in the morning and another midday.
  • Optimal Man: 2 capsules with a protein based breakfast and another 2 capsules midday IF he feels he needs more support with healthy energy and healthy mood, otherwise skip that afternoon dose.*
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

This is a fundamental and foundational supportive program for him.

I'd say this is a great start and may provide the nutrients he needs.

I wouldn't use the Dopamine or Optimal Focus at this time.

If he is struggling with social anxiety and irritability, I'd consider Serotonin Nutrients to support healthy serotonin levels at these moments as healthy serotonin levels support a healthy mood and healthy patience.

I have a Testosterone Nutrients supplement coming out in about a month and I believe that could be a big supportive supplement for him, too but it's not available yet.

Let's get started with these above and report back in a couple weeks ;)

I am 58 years old and studying to take my insurance license exam. I have been in the fitness industry for 34 years. I love learning about the body and it comes more naturally to me. I have no interest in insurance and am finding it very hard to concentrate. I always struggled with studying and memorizing. I am looking for support to help me get through this challenge. I love your products. My family uses a bunch of different ones from you. I have really bad tinnitus. When I’m trying to read I am more focused on the ringing in my ears😅. I ordered optimal focus. Right now, I am taking Lion’s mane, turmeric, optimal electrolytes and creatinine. ( the reason I am taking the exam is to help my son who is in the process of buying an agency.) Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I eat really healthy and exercise regularly. Thank you! Jen Brown

Hi Jen -

Insurance - yeah - I'd need support for that, too :)

Really bad tinnitus is usually associated with high histamine.

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking to support healthy histamine levels.*
  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge when sitting down to study to support healthy focus.*
  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule before sitting down to study to support healthy focus.*
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Histamine Nutrients: 2 capsules before bed to support healthy histamine metabolism.*
  • PreWorkout Nutrients: 1 serving 30 minutes prior to working out to support healthy histamine levels and healthy homocysteine levels - and of course healthy performance during your workout.* Working out and exercise increases histamine and thus ringing in your ears. This supports you and highly recommended. Use this before exercise and the Optimal Electrolyte during exercise with some added salt - like 1/4 tsp.

Some people don't find that Optimal Focus is for them. If that is the case for you, then switch it out and use Dopamine Nutrients instead along with the Brain Nutrients.

Dopamine Nutrients is great for those who need healthy motivation, healthy libido, healthy memory and have healthy eating habits vs gravitating towards sugar and alcohol.*

You should experience benefits within an hour of using any of these products.

I am focusing on supporting healthy histamine levels too so your tinnitus is better.*

Hello, after seeing side effects on medication, we tried Optimal Focus for our 11 year old son with adhd but didn’t see benefits. Should we next try Dopine Nutrietns or Brain Nutrients? Also, what enzymes are best in relation to adhd? Thank you!

Hi Heidi -

I'd consider a combination of Brain Nutrients with Dopamine Nutrients for your son.

Consider:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 a lozenge upon waking and another 1/2 lozenge prior to him sitting down to do homework later in the day
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule after his protein based breakfast. This should suffice. I don't think he'll need 2 capsules.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1/2 a serving upon waking in the morning and another 1 scoop in his water bottle with filtered water for school. Sip throughout the day.
  • Kids Multivitamin Chewable: 1/2 to 1 chewable in the morning with his protein based breakfast
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

This is a supportive foundation for him and he should notice a difference the same day.

Please let me know any contraindications for optimal focus and focalin 15 mg Thank you

Hi Dr. F -

This combination could be potentially amplifying and leading to excessive neurotransmission and excitation.

Focalin mechanism of action is pretty strong as it is thought to keep dopamine and norepi in the synapse longer in addition to stimulating their release.

Optimal Focus is designed to support healthy levels of acetylcholine in brain.*

Acetylcholine is a parasympathetic neurotransmitter while the others are more sympathetic. However, I am not sure if the combination of the two would be too strong.

Focalin I could see possibly being tapered down by their health professional if one desires and support healthy dopamine and norepi levels with a low potency combination of Brain Nutrients (1/4 to 1/2 lozenge) and (1/2 to 1 capsule) Dopamine Nutrients.*

We have a Kids Optimal Focus coming out soon which 2 chewables is equivalent to 1 capsule of Optimal Focus (thus, 1 chewable = 1/2 capsule).

Thanks for answering my message before :) I just wanted to check, does optimal focus have methyl group ingredients or works on methylation as I'm not tolerating methyl products at the moment? Hopefully that makes sense..

Hi Emma -

Choline is a methyl donor.

Usually people don't tolerate methyl donors for two reasons:

  • Low serotonin
  • High histamine

Low serotonin may be supported by using Serotonin Nutrients as it supports healthy serotonin levels.*

High histamine may be supported by using Histamine Nutrients as it supports healthy histamine levels.*

Can I take this while I'm taking Sudafed 12 hour for a cold? Also, does this have any interaction with herbs like chasteberry, or ginseng given to me by my naturopath to help with hormone support?

Hi Ashley -

You're good to go.

Consider Immune Intensive to support your healthy immune system.* This is also fine to take with the other things you're using.

Take it while having your cold and then stop. Consider taking 1 serving two times a day with a bit of food after.

If I can take focus with Vraylar the mood stabilizer for mania episodes. Focus works but not sure I can mix it.

Hi Mike -

I'm not sure either.

I would say likely not a good mix.

Mania is usually associated with a heightened amount of excitatory neurotransmission.

Nutrients like magnesium, lithium orotate, taurine are very supportive of a healthy calm mind.*

Consider:

  • Lithium Orotate: take as needed when you feel you need healthy support of your mind.*
  • Magnesium Plus: 1 capsule in the morning with breakfast and another 1 capsule before bed.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule after dinner
  • eat protein with each meal
  • never eat just carbs, caffeine and stimulants - that will destroy your brain and imbalance you.

The nutrients above are very supportive - and you may use these in conjunction with the Vraylar.

Hello Dr Lynch, I was wondering if optimal focus works on methylation at all as I don't seem to be tolerating methyl products? And reading through all these really helpful comments, you mentioned it could increase anxiety in some (I have severe social phobia and anxiety)? Another question I have is I've been smoke free for about 2 and a bit months now, but notice I have these extreme anger outbursts - do you think this is a lack of dopamine or something? Thanks so much :)

Hi Emma -

Congratulations on stopping smoking! That's huge!

Smoking nicotine does a couple things - it increases acetylcholine and also dopamine.

I have kids that I work with to try and stop vaping - as that is also nicotine.

They report they use Optimal Focus and that supports a healthy response for them so they don't feel they need to vape.

They use the full 3 capsule serving.

I suspect that either Optimal Focus and/or Serotonin Nutrients would be supportive for your healthy moods.*

Low serotonin and high acetylcholine can cause issues. I believe a balance of both is needed.

Irritability is often associated with low serotonin so the Serotonin Nutrients may be something you need first - then the Optimal Focus.

I'm still learning this and it's tough because everyone is so unique but I'm getting better ;)

Wondering why Optimal Focus is C/I with Adderall? I have a pt whose Adderall wears off late afternoon and needs extra support and I'd like to try this at a low dose

Hi Alex -

Optimal Focus supports acetylcholine.*

Adderall increases dopamine, norepinephrine (NE), and serotonin levels by inhibiting reuptake back into the neurons.

Acetylcholine can stimulate more dopamine and NE release which may result in too much dopamine and NE.

If you want to try it with your patient then definitely use a low dose and see how they go. You may be able to find a happy balance, but just monitor.

Hope this helps :)

Hi Ben, I have purchased Optimal Focus to help with slow processing speed. We have seen limited success with this supplement. We also have suboptimal performance of the MTHFR A1298C. We are trying to help with focusing. Should i be supporting this supplement with NAC?

Hi James -

Processing speed is more dopamine related than acetylcholine.

Optimal Focus supports healthy acetylcholine levels and Dopamine Nutrients (and Brain Nutrients) support healthy dopamine levels.*

Consider stacking for optimal performance.

I like to make targeted supplements so people can use them for a specific purpose rather than put all the ingredients in one kitchen sink.

Consider:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and another midday. This is key for healthy brain function.* Dehydration at 1% even negatively affects cognition.
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast.
  • Optimal Focus: try the above stack first without Optimal Focus. See how you feel. Then, if wanting to level it up, add in 1 capsule of Optimal Focus.

NAC is not what's needed here. The above will turn the lights on noticeably and quickly.

Thanks so much for your reply. Sorry I got confused yesterday with the supplements. I meant to say, could my mum take Bile nutrients? She does have reflux, gastritis and COPD and wondered if the betaine hydrochloride and choline ingredients were ok ? And would you need to be off omeprazole medication that used for reflux? Thank you!

Hi Lilly -

Thanks for the reminder on the reflux.

Bile Nutrients is likely ok but it also may aggravate a bit.

If she used Zinc Carnosine, one capsule twice daily with food - say breakfast and dinner, that may help support a healthy gut lining.

Or, if she's ok with taking more capsules, Gut Nutrients 3 capsules upon waking and 3 capsules before bed (away from food) would be more comprehensive support for her healthy gut and stomach lining.*

Use the Liver Nutrients instead of the Bile Nutrients for now.

Dr. Lynch

Hello, thanks very much for answering my question just before re COPD and optimal focus. It is for my mum in her late 60's. Would taking other forms be ok at all, eg your optimal PC, or just better to stay away from generally? Regarding your suggestions, I was looking into the liver nutrients, but she has gastritis, would this still be ok to take? Thanks!

Hi Lilly -

Optimal PC is ok to use as that's mostly phospholipids and could be actually quite supportive.

Look into NAC as well - consider 1 capsule after breakfast and 1 capsule with lunch. She may even do well with 2 capsules twice a day. Do not take it in the evening as it may increase coughing which will disrupt her sleep.

Gastritis is associated with many things.

Consider:

  • Gut Nutrients: 3 capsules upon waking and 3 capsules before bed to support a healthy gut lining.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner to support a healthy microbiome and healthy histamine levels.* High histamine is associated with gastritis.
  • Digestive Enzymes: 1 capsule with meals.
  • Optimal PC: 1 capsule after dinner a few days a week only. Many people tend to experience low mood if taking Optimal PC daily due to the serotonin/PC connection.
  • Liver Nutrients: 1 capsule after dinner is ok for her to take.

I'm trying to not give her that many capsules as it's annoying to take so many. That said, the benefits could be significant.

Hi Dr Lynch, Would taking optimal focus be ok to take with someone with COPD. Recently quit smoking over a month ago and noticed a massive decline cognitively. Or any other advice you might be able to offer. Many thank

Hi Lilly -

Great question and I'm glad you asked it.

Congratulations on quitting smoking - that's awesome! :)

There is research demonstrating that COPD may be related to elevated levels of acetylcholine.

Thus, Optimal Focus would NOT be recommended in one with COPD as we do not want to further support acetylcholine production.

I have some great things for you to consider which should help you in many ways:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1 lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and another one to two midday
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast - meat, eggs, collagen
  • Liver Nutrients: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

Start here and keep me posted. This should help a lot.

Hi, My 17 year old daughter has symptoms of Inattentive ADHD. She has trouble retaining information and following instructions, is forgetful, appears very calm but feels anxious. She is heterozygous MTHFR C677T, homozygous MTRR, homozygous CYP1A2, slow COMT and slow MAOA. Would this supplement help her or would you suggest something else? Thank you!

Hi Marie -

Great information.

Thank you for including the actual problem along with some SNPs. Many people just give me the SNPs without detailing the issue.

That's not helpful at all.

It's tough knowing exactly what the brain wants in order to perform well for us.

I'd say your choice is a good one. At first, I thought no - it's not - but a slow COMT and slow MAOA tells me she may be having more stress which is actually the problem of concentration.

When we're stressed out, we're dumb.

My youngest son really couldn't focus - he, too, seemed inattentive - but actually he was so attentive and stressed out that he froze in his ability to learn and communicate.

I designed Optimal Focus for him.

It has changed his life.

He now is a straight A student, in college courses at 16 years old and thriving.

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus: 1/2 a lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and another serving later in the day
  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast - but can also be taken without food - but it's better taken with.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

I'd start here.

She may need Brain Nutrients (1/4 to 1/2 a lozenge) in the midday along with the additional serving of Optimal Electrolyte - but try without first.

Keep me posted.

She should notice an improvement literally the same day she takes these supplements.

Note: Optimal Focus is a very long performing supplement. If she takes it on a Monday, she may still feel the benefits on a Tuesday morning. If so, skip taking it Tuesday and if she feels she needs to replenish on Wednesday, go for it. It's also quite strong so 1 capsule is often sufficient for most people but some need all three capsules. If she take 1 capsule and feels absolutely nothing after 30 minutes, then she should take another capsule - and so on until 3 capsules. If still nothing, then she needs either Brain Nutrients and/or Dopamine Nutrients.

Hello! Recently came across this and would like to know if this would be helpful with panic and derealization? Possibly occurring from dysbiosis (barely any good gut bacteria and extreme inflammation). As I am in a protocol healing the gut I would like to have something to help my anxiety.

Hi Sammie -

I'm happy to see you looking at possible solutions.

A few things come to mind here.

  • Lithium Orotate: 1 capsule as needed when these feelings arise as it supports a healthy mood.*
  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 capsule as needed if Lithium doesn't address it by itself.

I don't think Optimal Focus is what's needed here.

High inflammation in the gut and dysbiosis is associated with low serotonin which is why I'm thinking Serotonin Nutrients is a better fit.

You should experience improvements within the same day of taking them.

Hi Dr. Lynch! I saw your livestream on Instagram last night where you mentioned if we message you, you or your specialist would take the time to review it and reply...this is absolutely amazing! THANK YOU! I'm rarely on Instagram so the timing of seeing your live feed felt "meant to be." I've been searching for answers for my 14-year-old daughter. She was tested in 2019 and is homozygous for MTHFR C677T. Just recently, she was diagnosed with ADHD (not hyperactive but lacks focus). She was put on Adderall but it made her extremely irritable and she got bad acne from it. After researching Adderall, I found that these meds can deplete vitamins which, unfortunately, with her being homozygous for MTHFR, it seems like the Adderall was depleting what remaining little vitamins she had. She is off of the Adderall right now and we're trying to increase her vitamin intake with your Kids Multivitamin Chewable MF. I just bought the Seeking Health Optimal Focus for her to possibly try but want to make sure we're approaching this all correctly with what her needs are. She will see her primary care doctor tomorrow and I've requested to have them do bloodwork to get a baseline of where she is with her vitamins. She has seemed pretty down and overwhelmed lately with the toll the Adderall took on her. We know this down feeling can be characteristic of MTHFR with depleted vitamins so we want to make sure her levels are sufficient. The good news/silver lining is that stopping the Adderall and starting the additional vitamins has helped the acne so we feel like we're on a good path there. Now to figure out the focus piece which will hopefully boost her spirits too. Do you have any recommendations for us? I'm guessing you already know this but I'm also homozygous MTHFR C677T so I've been following you for years and love your products and the support you provide! Again, thank you!

Hi Molly -

Nice :)

Things meant to be are pretty cool.

Glad she is doing better. Adderall is really strong.

  • Hyperactivity is usually a deficiency in acetylcholine.
  • Inattentiveness is usually a deficiency of dopamine and norepinephrine.

Consider:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and another later in the day
  • Kids Multivitamin MF Chewable: 1 chewable after breakfast - never on an empty stomach or a snack.
  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule after breakfast.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Liver Nutrients: 1 capsule after dinner

Keep me posted how she does on this. You'll see changes the first day and so will she. Either it's great for her or it's not quite the right fit. We can tweak as needed.

Make sure she eats a healthy breakfast with protein - eggs, meat, collagen - very important way to start the day.

I have been taking one capsule while studying for about two weeks now and I definitely notice a difference. When I went to my doctor the other day complaining of post-menopausal brain fog ( I have trouble retaining information and recall of information). She suggested Optimal PC and Phosphatidylserine. I forgot to mention that I had been taking the Optimal Focus too. Is this too much to take all three? I only take the Optimal Focus during the week while I am actively working.

Hi Nikki -

Awesome :)

I hear you and your thinking is on point.

Consider:

  • Optimal Focus: use as needed as you are currently
  • Brain Nutrients: take 1/2 a lozenge upon waking
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast like eggs, meat, collagen

The dopamine drops as your estrogen levels drop due to post menopausal.

If you start getting on hormone replacement therapy of bio-identical estrogen, progesterone, etc - then you'll likely need to use the Dopamine Nutrients way less.

In the meantime, the addition of Brain Nutrients and Dopamine Nutrients will be a game changer for you.

I'd also add in Optimal Electrolyte - 1 serving upon waking and another midday at some point. I'm always sipping a serving at my desk and then use a lot when I'm being very physical on our ranch.

I would not use Optimal PC right now as it may backfire and increase depression.

I'd also not use the P Serine currently. It's a great recommendation but I think the Dopamine Nutrients is more fitting along with the electrolytes and Brain Nutrients.

You can use all 4 together - my kids do all the time and they're in college.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask a question. My 30 yr old son is considering taking medication for adhd. He had lived with it for years and developed many positive coping mechanisms and most of the time, considers ADHD to be his “superpower.” However, lately he has been struggling with focus and a chaotic, overactive brain. That combined with career change and relationship issues has gotten him “spinning.” We thought maybe trying your supplements prior to going on prescription meds may be helpful. I have already ordered Optimal Focus, but now am wondering if Dopamine Nutrients would be better…or in addition? His brain is hyperactive, but he can also be spacey and zoned out. How would you recommend we proceed.

Hi Natalie -

I like your pick.

Optimal Focus is what I would have recommended as well.

A few other things to support him - consider:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and another midday
  • Glutathione Plus: 1/2 a lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Man: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast
  • Optimal Focus: 1 to 3 capsules - use what he thinks is best but definitely start with just 1 capsule. If he feels some improvements but not enough, take 2 to 3. Go up incrementally. Some days he may find he needs only 1 capsule and other days 2 or 3 and some days he may be fine without any.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • make sure he's eating protein - especially for breakfast and lunch

I’m not sure where to start! My son just returned home from a two-years in Guatemala where he ate a ton of processed food, poor sanitation etc.. he has had extreme difficulty focusing but also falling asleep all the time wasn’t sure if it was depression or parasites we’ve been doing parasite cleanses he feels much better but still falling asleep most everywhere . Can’t drive without being extremely sleepy. He falls asleep anytime he sits down for a prolonged period of time. We had a sleep study , they said his sleep is fine, no apnea , but still falling asleep everywhere. Lectures, school, etc.. he said he feels like he cannot focus and is less intelligent than before. He is in pilots school and I want to help him feel optimal. I have MTHFR not sure about him. He has been trying to clean up his diet and make healthier choices, been filtering his water. He doesn’t drink alcohol. He is on a liver supplement and a brain supplement , vitamin d2 and k3 which he says seems to help( Just ingredients ). I’m wondering what supplements would help him. Optimal focus and dopamine? We had all of his blood work done at a regular dr and everything came back within normal ranges. I feel like he has brain inflammation for sure.. He is 21 and has a very sweet and kind disposition has no mood or acne issues.

Hi M R -

Let's get your son right again.

I would continue looking at his digestion. Consider a comprehensive stool and digestive analysis with parasitology.

Supplements to consider:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1 lozenge upon waking and another midday as needed
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and another serving midday
  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule upon waking. Use this on days he wakes up sleepy. Do NOT use it on days he wakes up feeling great. Skip it on those days. He will feel great again and quite soon.
  • Optimal Man: 2 capsules with a protein based breakfast like meat, eggs, collagen
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Saccharomyces Boulardii: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Zinc Carnosine: 1 capsule with breakfast and 1 capsule after dinner to support gut health.
  • stop the liver supplement
  • stop the brain supplement
  • keep going on the D3+K2 supplement

Let's try this combination.

He may need more support with the Optimal Focus or Dopamine Nutrients but I think he may do just fine with the above.

Dear Dr. Lynch, my daughter has benefitted from your HistamineX product for histamine intolerance, but her fundamental health challenge is a disabling, systemic acetylcholine deficiency. I was pleasantly surprised to find that you make this product. We have independently pieced together various supplements and prescription acetylcholinesterase inhibitors to boost her levels. Do any of your ingredients provide an acetyl group? She reacted poorly to ALCAR, but MCT oil has been very helpful. Estrodial has been an effective CHAT modulator. Does American Ginseng increase CHAT? A virus in 2020 preceded her progressively worsening acteylcholine deficiency, and we are still seeking a root cause. Thank you for your insights and well-researched products.

Hi John -

Optimal Focus could be an amazing one for her.

I'd use this instead of the pieced together supplements because I already pieced them all together here.

If she takes yours and this - it will likely be too powerful and too much leading to side effects.

There are no acetyl groups here that I'm aware of.

Start with 1 capsule in the morning and she will likely do well with 2 or 3.

I typically use just 1 capsule a few days a week. Our sons use about 1 to 2 capsules a few days a week as well as they are in college.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Would the kids version or adult version be better for a 12 yr old boy 5’10. He had ADHD and looking to support naturally instead of prescription?

Hi Carie -

It's hard to say without knowing his symptoms, diet and lifestyle.

Some people are very responsive to supplements and others need to get a lot.

It's not really about age so much as it is about the degree of need and degree of deficiency.

Keep in mind there is ADHD Inattentive, ADHD Hyperactive and ADHD Mixed.

  • Optimal Focus supports healthy focus for those who tend to be hyperactive.*
  • Dopamine Nutrients supports healthy focus, motivation and drive in those who tend to be inattentive and unproductive.*
  • A mix of both Optimal Focus and Dopamine Nutrients supports healthy focus in those who are mixed.*

I'd consider starting with 1 capsule of Optimal Focus for your son if he is the more hyperactive type as it supports healthy focus in the inattentive.

If mixed, consider 1/2 a capsule of each above. Mix into a bite of food.

If inattentive type, consider 1/2 a lozenge of Brain Nutrients upon waking along with 1/2 a capsule of Dopamine Nutrients.

Additionally:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/4 to 1/2 a lozenge upon waking in the morning
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and again later in the day - perhaps in his water bottle at school
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • protein with each meal - especially breakfast and lunch
  • Phosphatidyl Serine: 1 capsule before bed

Check back in a couple weeks with how he is doing and we can adjust if needed.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Hello! I tried optimal focus for myself and I'm enjoying the benefits. My son, however, seems to have the ADD-Inattentive version. He is 9 years old and has slow processing. He appears spacey at times and has a particularly difficult time processing verbal instructions. He misses some written details and tends to rush through school work. He is taking compounded B-12 injections, ProOmega, a quality multivitamin and L-methylfolate to aide in speech and cognitive already. He is not hyperactive, disruptive or particular talkative, rather he appears spacey and slow to react. He has a good memory but his word recall is poor and his speech is not fluid. He needs more repetition than most for new concepts but is a good student with familiar topics. I'd like to avoid any type of prescription stimulant so I'm looking to see if there is a natural option to increase his attention and make school a bit easier for him. Based on his profile, would he benefit from any of your products?

Hi there -

Well stated.

Consider:

  • Brain Nutrients Lozenge: 1/2 to 1 lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 full serving upon waking. Kids don't hydrate at all and this is key for a healthy brain.
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast
  • Phosphatidyl Serine: 1 capsule before bed

Introduce the Brain Nutrients and the Phosphatidyl Serine the same day - as specified above.

Then, a day or two later, introduce the Dopamine Nutrients if needed.

Keep an eye out for his moods and headaches. We don't want him becoming irritable or having headaches. Too much stimulation can do that.

If he does, then he needs to stop the B12 and folate supplements UNLESS he is confirmed microcytic anemic.

He may also do well with Optimal Focus with the above changes. My kids like stacking the Optimal Focus with Dopamine Nutrients. You may find he does well with that. And when using Brain Nutrients, this trio is very supportive.

Hi!! I am wondering why it is not recommended for breastfeeding? Also, what are the side effects of using this supplement if you are currently on adhd medications?

Hi Jess -

It is safe for breastfeeding. Thank you for the ping. My team is updating the website.

Side effects can be headaches or irritability. This is a very potent supplement. It's one or the other.

Need to talk with your health professional about using either Optimal Focus (which supports healthy acetylcholine levels)* or using the medication.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

I had a very strong reaction to one capsule of Optimal Focus. I became very hyper, speedy, and a little shaky like being WAY over-caffeinated. I want to know if I can open the capsule and divide the dosage. I would also like to know what the possible reason for this is. Could there be a blocked pathway? Am I an over-processor of something in this supplement? Is there something else I should be taking along side this?

Hi Dawn -

It's a powerful supplement.

We have a Kids Focus Chewable coming out soon where the serving size is 2 chewables which is equivalent to 1 capsule of Optimal Focus.

In the meantime, you can certainly open the capsule and put 1/4 of capsule into a bite of food and take it that way.

If you're currently taking ADHD or ADD medications, then you should not use Optimal Focus along with them.

I'm trying to figure out why some people are so sensitive and what the reason is. I do believe high histamine is one.

If you're high histamine, then consider taking Histamine Nutrients to support healthy histamine levels.* You'd take 1 to 2 capsules any time of day or night.

Keep me posted how you do with these changes.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

I ordered this product for my 10 year old child. We haven’t received it yet. He suffers greatly with lack of focus and self control, attention span, impulsiveness, hyperactivity and talks sometimes uncontrollably. Do you have any other product recommendations that could be paired with this one? He is already talking the seeking health kids chewable multi-vitamin.

Hi Jennifer -

I think the Optimal Focus is going to be supportive for him.

I'd add in the Fish Oil after dinner along with Optimal Electrolyte - 1 serving twice a day.

In the morning, I'd consider 1/2 a lozenge of Glutathione Plus Lozenge.

Make sure he is getting protein for breakfast lunch and dinner. He cannot have just carbs for meals.

Keep me posted.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Is it possible to take this supplement while breastfeeding? Or do you have any recommendations for a good supplement regimen while breastfeeding- particularly to address mommy brain and focus issues? Thank you so much!

Hi Anna -

My suggestion would be to not use Optimal Focus whilst breastfeeding.

Seeking Health does have a Kids Optimal Focus which is suggested for ages 4 and up.

I'd suggest in the meantime:

  • Optimal PC: Take 1-2 capsules per day with or without food.
  • Optimal Prenatal to support nutritional requirements during breastfeeding.

After you finish breastfeeding you can certainly use Optimal Focus for mommy brain and focus issues :)*

Hello Dr. Lynch! Thank you for taking the time to answer everyone’s questions with such thoughtful replies! It’s a pleasure reading through all these Q&As. How amazing it would be if all doctors were this attentive and knowledgeable. A little about me: I am 38/f, stay at home mother of two young toddlers. I struggle with general and social anxiety, brain fog, forgetfulness and super poor word recall/ verbal fluency. You should hear me try to tell my husband about our day… I am all over the place! I never used to be this bad but having babies really changed something in my brain. Anyway- I’m wondering if Optimal Focus would be a good choice for me? If not, what would be a better choice? Thanks again!

Hi Carrie -

You're welcome ;)

I learn a lot, too.

I hear you. A parent with two young kids - and stay at home - that is no easy job.

Here are some suggestions for you:

  • Glutathione Plus: 1/2 to 1 lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and then another 1-2 throughout the day
  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Multivitamin One MF: 1 capsule every 3 days with a protein based breakfast. Skip days. I don't want you taking this daily.

Start here. Keep me posted. Check in a couple weeks how you're doing.

You'll know if Optimal Focus is right for you the same day. It will kick in.

If you're not feeling the 'kick', then add in 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients with it.

I have a combination of ApoE 3 and 4, suspect ADD but not diagnosed, problems with memory especially wirking memory, focus and brainfog. Does Optimal Focus have any effect on dopamine? I seem to be sensitive to things that may effect dopamine, like vitex and l tyrosine as it seem to trigger stress response but I do well with l theanine. Is there anything one should consider before taking the supplement ir is it safe to just give it a go?

Hi MK -

Optimal Focus supports healthy acetylcholine levels. Acetylcholine can have an effect on dopamine, as well as serotonin, glutamate, and histamine. Neurotransmitters very rarely work in isolation.

However, Optimal Focus does not directly stimulate dopamine. We find that most individuals seem to do better with either Optimal Focus or Dopamine Nutrients.

I suggest to start with 1 capsule first and see how you go. If you find a benefit with it then wait for a few days until the effects wear off. Then take another capsule.

If you take 1 capsule and do not experience any effect, take 2 capsules the next day. You can take up to 3 capsules per day if needed.

It's good to also take some time off, so maybe take it only during the week and give your brain the weekend off :).

If you do well with L-theanine and not so well with dopamine support, then it sounds like you may need more GABA support. In this case, Ashwagandha may also be a good option for you in terms of sleep and stress.

Hello! My son is the same age as your son at 16 years old. I recall you describing his issues with school and focus and my son sounded the same. He has difficulty staying on task and staying focused. Paces a lot and fidgets. Can only focus for about 20 minutes. Trying to determine if he needs Optimal Focus or Dopamine Nutrients or can he take both? He also has issues with procrastination with schoolwork and low motivation to get started. I have tried one Optimal Focus with him which he says helps a little bit. Should he try taking 2 Optimal Focus? I'm trying to recall what you stated in your videos what your boys in college take and how much. He is an athlete who plays lacrosse. He takes Optimal Man too. Perhaps he also needs Optimal Electrolyte? Thank you!

Hi Heather -

You're on the right track.

I'd consider actually blending.

Consider:

  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule after a protein based breakfast
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule after a protein based breakfast
  • Optimal Man: 2 capsules with breakfast
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1-2 servings a day and add 1/4 tsp extra salt if he's sweating a lot with sport.
  • Pre-Workout Nutrients: 1 serving 30 minutes prior to big workouts or game days
  • Adrenal Cortex: take this ONLY if he wakes up really tired in the morning, wakes up too many times at night to pee, gets dizzy upon standing. Don't take it if he doesn't have those symptoms. This supports healthy energy.*

Can it be used by someone who has early signs of dimentia? Or is B12 Complex MF better?

Hi Lily -

Optimal Focus is my go to along with Brain Nutrients and Dopamine Nutrients.

Consider:

  • Brain Lozenge: 1/2 a lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule with breakfast
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule with breakfast
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

Start there.

Play with the amounts of the nootropics - you may do better with 1 full lozenge or more of Brain Nutrients, no Dopamine Nutrients and 2 capsules of Optimal Focus or some combination thereof. The three though are key for supporting a healthy brain and healthy memory.*

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Hi Dr Lynch-- can I start by saying a massive thank you. Your other supplements have resolved a host of issues for me including hormonal ones. For the purposes, of the below, pls note i'm a female and 32. I'm generally someone who gets distracted very easily but who can really focus when the time comes (albeit in short spurts). I've typically had a good memory where I actually pay attention to things. I've become very stressed recently by work and am experiencing brain fog, failure to remember even mundane things (always on the tip of my tongue), scatter-brained vibes etc. I took optimal focus (one a day for two consecutive days) and it didn't help me. I'm not sure if this isn't the right thing for me perhaps but my memory is still pretty bad and I struggle to focus for very long. I'm not sure if I'm simply burned out (in which case is there something else recommended)? Thank you

Hi Jas -

Thank you for your note :)

You're welcome.

Optimal Focus isn't the right one for you.

Consider:

  • Dopamine Nutrients: take 1-2 capsules to support healthy focus and drive.*
  • Brain Nutrients: take 1/4 to 1/2 to 1 lozenge along with Dopamine Nutrients to further support healthy mood and focus.*
  • Optimal Focus: you can take 1 capsule with the Dopamine Nutrients as a stack. My kids love this combination.

Try the Dopamine Nutrients by itself first. See how you do.

Then try the Brain Nutrients by itself. See how you do - on another day.

Then try stacking two of them if you felt good from each of them by itself.

Then try stacking another two if you felt good.

Experiment with these three.

Additionally:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 to 2 servings a day - sip at your desk.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Multivitamin One MF: 1 capsule three times a week with a protein based breakfast.

My daughter has struggled with focus and dyslexia since she began studying at a young age. She is 12 and dr recommends ADHD meds. She is only 100 pounds and struggles with appetite when she is even taking 5 mg. I recently tested positive for MTHFR heterozygous both and both my kids have stork bites on neck and many symptoms discussed on your IG and blog relating to MTHFR. I want to get them tested, I’m not sure the best way to begin? Also they both have skin issues related to histamine on body and struggle with acne:( I have tried everything I feel between diet and supplements and nothing has worked? Would this be a good start for her schooling?

Hi Lindsay -

I'm answering some of the questions we are receiving to help out.

The StrateGene genetic report would provide you with a lot of information, including MTHFR and histamine genes, to help your children live healthy lives moving forward:

https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/strategene-report

I'm not sure if you've tried these supplements yet, but this would be my suggestions for acne:

  • Histamine Digest: Take 1 capsule with meals.
  • ProBiota HistaminX: Take 1-2 capsules per day with or without food.

Now to your daughter...

Optimal Focus would be a good start. Do this first.

Other supplements to consider may include:

  • Fish Oil
  • Lithium Orotate

Let us know how you go.

I start the week full focus and full energy. By Thursday my brain is done. Low mood, low focus, hard to stay on top of things. Obviously rest is necessary and I give myself that, but I still need to get through Thursday and Friday. Would this be a good option for those slump days?

Hi Jenna -

Absolutely!

Optimal Focus is not for everyone (after all the brain is complicated) but the feedback I get from clients is that it helps to switch their brain on.

I suggest you take 1 capsule on Thursday and see how you go. If this is enough to get you through Thursday and Friday, then stick with that dose.

If you need more then experiment with 2 or 3 capsules on Thursday only. This may be enough to get you through both days. If not, you can take it on Thursday and Friday.

Everyone is different, so see what dosage works best for you.

Let me know how you go :).

Can I give this to my 6 year old son with Autism/ADHD? I have notifications on for the kids' optimal focus that is coming out but I have a bottle of optimal focus and I am wondering if I can give this to him for now? He is struggling to focus in class. he is well behaved but cannot focus on assignments and instruction throughout the day at times. Teacher is concerned about his focus.

Hi Janis -

Yes, you may. I'd start with 1/2 to 1 capsule after breakfast.

Hi Dr. Lynch, First of all THANK YOU! A doctor who focuses on root cause is a Superhero and should be applauded always. Thank you for helping me in the direction of wellness :) I wanted to pick your brain about my medical ailments/gene understandings. I work with a functional and holistic doctor who I adore. Together we have found out that I am Homozygous for C677T. I was using Homocysteine Supreme for a few years, and recently came across your methyl free B complex and Folinic Acid . Since switching I feel immensely better. I am also healing from SIBO, which we found in April, after a terrible yeast overgrowth in my gut. During the 3rd phase of my SIBO treatment I moved to a low FODMOP diet, and was taking immunoglobulins to repair my gut which caused my histamines to go wild? Maybe not? I do not eat wheat, gluten, dairy, chocolate, peanut butter, sugar. Pretty much anything that brought younger me joy LOL Now during ovulation it seems that I am having some sort of histamine reaction- I tried HistamineX during this time because the ingredients seemed to be yeast biofilm disruptors and that helps me immensely. I also added Glutathione and have a bit of chapping in corners of my lips, could that be related to anything? For the first time this year my oral thrush is finally clearing since making changes, embracing your supplement line, and the rich information in Dirty Genes- seems DAO, PEMT, COMT Fast and Slow are some other dirty genes that need to be cleaned. My last homocysteine labs read 6.7, and my cholesterol levels were not ideal (scary because I do also carry the lipoprotein gene). I am due for an updated blood work panel that I will get next month. I go to the gym every morning for a 50 minute cardio and weight training class, and my body has responded well to this change starting in January. I eat clean, leafy greens, and am noticing that a mediterranean diet agrees with my body the most. I am half Italian, I suppose that might make sense :) Alcohol knocks me down for minimum 2 days, so now I avoid that too. My long question is, is there a regimen you recommend for someone like me? Any advice on how I can help my children who have one MTHFR gene mutation for sure and COMT Fast from what I can gather..

Hi Michelle -

Sounds like you're making some great progress! Well done!

The chapping in corners. That may be a riboflavin deficiency. Using more glutathione can use up more riboflavin as it's needed to regenerate the glutathione. Our Glutathione Plus contains riboflavin.

Let's tweak a few things:

  • Gallbladder Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner to support healthy cholesterol and healthy gut.*
  • Pre-Workout Nutrients: 1 serving 30 minutes taken before your workout to support healthy performance, recovery, histamine and homocysteine.*

Dr: Lynch: I am and have been experiencing some depression and OCD symptoms. Standard medical treatment cause me side effects that don’t allow me to use those treatments. I have OPTIMAL FOCUS which I just started at a low dosage yesterday. I’m wondering what protocol Dr. Lynch would recd for depression and anxiety/OCD. Including BRAIN NUTRIENTS, SEROTONIN NUTRIENTS or DOPAMINE NUTRIENTS in some order? I know you cannot offer medical advice. Just want to understand the protocol you recd with these supplements taken together or in whatever manner based on your experience with using them for depression and anxiety/OCD? Many thanks, Linda Seidman P.S. I’m in my 70’s

Hi Linda -

I suggest you consider:

  • Serotonin Nutrients: take 1 capsule in the morning and possibly another in the evening before bed. Start with 1 capsule and see how you feel.

I do not think Optimal Focus is what you need right now.

Try the Serotonin Nutrients based on what you shared to support healthy thoughts and a healthy mood.*

Dr. Lynch

My son took 1 capsule of Optimal Focus for the first time and did amazing. But the second day he was very emotional when he took 1 capsule in the morning. The third day he skipped an Optimal Focus and still had a very emotional day. He could not stop crying and didn’t know why. What could caused this? He has fast Mao-A and slow Mao-B.

Hi Elena -

Optimal Focus is an incredibly powerful supplement.

I've found that it seems to keep working the next day even without taking it.

Meaning, if he took 1 capsule say on a Monday and felt amazing, he probably felt quite good on Tuesday morning still.

Don't take it when he feels really good still. It has a lasting effect.

He should have not taken it that morning. Only take it when he feels like how he felt on Monday.

There is a relationship between acetylcholine and serotonin.

My guess is he may tend to be lower serotonin and the higher acetylcholine pushed him over the emotional edge.

I can see your son maybe doing well with Optimal Focus, 1 capsule, every 2 days - and again, it tends to have a lasting effect - so do not take it at all if he feels good that morning.

You may want to have Serotonin Nutrients on hand to support a healthy mood if crying occurs.*

There is a goldilocks amount of acetylcholine that we all need and want.

The first day your son had it.

The second and third days, he had too much.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

I had a 63 yo male with cognitive decline try just 1 cap of the Optimal Focus, in the morning for 4 days. On the 4th day, he had a very negative reaction of intense paranoia a few hours later, which eventually subsided. He took 3 days off and restarted by taking just 1 pill in the morning and then in the middle of the night, he woke and experienced intense paranoia again, couldn't sleep, couldn't settle. Of note, he remodeled very damaged homes and had significant toxicant exposure. I'm working him up for a variety of things but wanted to reach out to see if anyone there could help me better understand what could have led to this reaction. If I am better able to understand the pathways negatively impacted, it will give me more insights into his physiology and how better to support him.

Hi Tina -

Optimal Focus supports healthy acetylcholine levels.*

The huperzine in Optimal Focus is at a low amount but the formulation is very synergistic so it's quite powerful.

I'm wondering what other supplements he is taking or other medications. There can definitely be an interaction.

For now, I'd pause the Optimal Focus.

Then, I'd introduce the Glutathione Plus Lozenges and use 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking along with 1/2 to 1 serving of Optimal Electrolyte along with the Glutathione lozenge.

These two are more subtle for healthy memory and may support him more gently than the Optimal Focus.

Additionally, consider Brain Nutrients as a bit heavier hitter than the Glutathione Plus lozenge. The Brain Nutrients supports healthy biopterin levels which support healthy nitric oxide, serotonin and dopamine levels. He'd use 1/4 to 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients any time of day. I like using it low dose periodically during my day vs a full lozenge or two once a day. I find that my head is way more even keeled with a lower amount and a couple times a day.

I suspect he'd do well with those three supplements.

I'm still learning why some people do not do well with acetylcholine.

Dr. Lynch

My 17yo daughter who has Down syndrome is having OCD tendencies. Hair twisting and pulling. Repetitive words, phrases and actions. She is very rigid with her likes and dislikes in all aspects of her daily life. She is grumpy and anxious a lot of the time. Transitions are very hard for her, especially at school. She is very thin, 5’2” and 86lbs. She mainly wants to eat chicken nuggets. She has the MTHFR mutation which I give her a B12 with L-methylfolate supplement already . Would this supplement be helpful for her? I was also looking at the dopamine and serotonin ones. I’m desperate to help her. Thank you

Hi Kat -

Well done for already giving her B12 with L-methylfolate (I assume it's the Methyl B12 with L-Methylfolate supplement). With a diet mainly consisting of chicken nuggets she most certainly is deficient in these nutrients.

I'm a mom of two (now grown-up) sons, but I remember how hard it was at times to get them to eat properly. Add in OCD and it will just be so much harder.

My suggestion would actually be to try her on Serotonin Nutrients instead. Check with her healthcare practitioner first if she's on any other medications.

Serotonin is involved in the communication between the front part of the brain (prefrontal cortex) and the deeper brain structures. OCD is often the result of problems in this communication process.*

On a side note, if she's not eating a wide variety of vegetables and other healthy foods, you may want to consider giving her a multivitamin such as Multivitamin One or Multivitamin Plus (soon Optimal Multivitamin).

All the best :)

Elizma Lambert (Naturopath)

Hi Dr. Lynch! My 12 year old daughter has a do Sensory Processing Disorder and we are suspecting ADHD as well. What supplements do you recommend for her?

Hi Kayla -

I'm stepping in for Dr. Lynch to help answer the influx of questions we're receiving.

There are lots of similarities between Sensory Processing Disorder and ADHD, such as heightened stimulation or sensitivity.

There are also many subtypes of both conditions that would be treated differently, so it's hard to make blanket recommendations without more information. I highly recommend you work with a healthcare practitioner who can take a thorough health history and make more individualized recommendations.

However, here are some first recommendations to try for her:

Ashwagandha: Take 1 capsule any time of the day.
Magnesium Plus: Take 1 capsule per day.

You may also try Optimal Focus since acetylcholine helps to dampen irrelevant background stimulation.*

Start her with just 1 capsule first and see how she goes. If she responds well leave it for a few days and see how long the effects last. Once the effects wear off you can give her another one. You can increase the dosage to 3 capsules a day if needed, but remember that less is better. Only use as much as she needs. If she does not respond favorably then stop.

Good luck!

Regards,
Elizma Lambert (Naturopath)

HI There, First off, thank you for all the information you are providing the world. I have audiobook and physical book of Dirty Genes and it’s very helpful. I have homozygous MTHFR 677, reduced COMT, GNMT, 1 MAO-A gene that increases expression of MAO-A and 1 MAO-A gene that reduces MAO-A and reduced MAO-B according to my nutra hacker report. Plus many others which makes me a bit confused to be honest. Anyway, I have dealt with low grade depression and anxiety in the past 10 years particularly after fertility issues, miscarriages and then burnout from having kids. I tried lots of natural therapies to help me feel better but nothing worked so I went to doc last year and tried Zoloft. It worked at making me feel calm but it made me very indifferent. A few months later I took Wellbutrin (Zyban here in Australia) to help me quit my nicotine dependence. It worked very well and I was able to quit, but I also felt so much better and like happy old myself again on this medication. I could only take it for 2 months though as its only allowed to be used as smoking cessation support and not for depression. I told my doc how it made me feel so much better and like myself again. She wouldn’t prescribe Zyban off label to me but instead got me to swap the Zoloft to Pristiq as Pristiq works on serotonin and dopamine pathway(albeit to much smaller degree). I have taken the Pristiq for 2 months now and it is better than Zoloft for my mood, yet I feel my motivation, concentration, focus and memory are absolutely terrible. I’m struggling at work because I will forget a task I am doing while I am going to do it. I also can’t hold a thought in my brain for longer than 2 seconds. I thought my memory was bad before but this is another level of terrible, I forget words all the time, don’t know how to finish my sentence, it’s crazy. When I work alone I talk myself through tasks so I can get them done. It’s a real struggle to concentrate and work effectively, and I am scared it’s only going to get worse. So my questions is - I have looked at your products - Dopamine nutrients, brain nutrients, and optimal focus, which one should I try or should I try a combo? I have ordered optimal focus because I found it on IHerb. But wondering if I should try the others as well. I feel like I need more dopamine but I can’t really tell tbh. I take some supps already - Methyl B’s Mg glycinate, probiotics each day. And ad lib I have Tyrosine, Taurine, NAC, Citocoline. Sorry for the long post but I would love some guidance as I am feeling very confused as to what to do. Thank you so much :)

Hi Chantal -

The best thing to do is to do what you just did:

  • identify what didn't work
  • identify what did work

Then, you look at 'mechanisms of action' to see what these actions did to your brain and body.

Wellbutrin increases dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.
Zoloft keeps serotonin in the brain - SSRI - and definitely does make one indifferent and trashes libido.

Based on what you shared with me, consider:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge upon waking
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 to 2 capsules with a protein based breakfast
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 to 3 servings a day. Dehydration trashes your brain function. Sip 1 serving over time in a glass of filtered water. I recommend one serving upon waking and another midday.

Try the above.

If needing more support, add in the Optimal Focus - just 1 capsule to start. If adding this in, I'd consider 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients with 1 cap of Dopamine Nutrients.

Make sure you're getting sufficient protein in during the morning and other meals. This doesn't mean bury yourself in protein but you should have protein on your plate with each meal - with less protein in the evening.

You may also do very well with the Methyl B12 with L-Methylfolate Lozenges - instead of the Brain Nutrients - upon waking. I actually used both.

Keep in mind that taking these supplements and the medications you shared above is NOT a good idea. It's one or the other.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Thank you for your answers to my previous questions about my son and the adderall. It gives me peace of mind to have a specific direction to try. I am fascinated by the puzzle of the Strategene reports and my 2 different sons' results. Both sons have a spaciness to them but the 14-year-old, who is on Adderall, is much more severe and is the one always losing things and struggling with making good choices. He has a genius IQ but yet can’t remember to bring his backpack to school. The 18-year-old can sometimes act a little ditzy but is about to start at a fairly prestigious college. Anyway, I was surprised to see that my 18-year-old, who does not seem to have the dopamine issues of my other 2 sons also has a lot of the same SNPs as my youngest who really struggles with impulses and memory and tracking things. I compared the Strategene Genetic Overview of the 2 boys, and I see that while they both have red notations for a lot of the same genes (NAT2, DRD2, COMT, CYP1A2, MTHFD1, MTHFR, MTRR, PON1, GSTA1, GST01), the youngest with the definitive memory/focus/behavioral issues also has SNPs for TH, ADRB2, UGT1A6, GSTP1. Is there anything here that you could point to in this added info that is maybe causing my 14 year old to be so much more “out to lunch” than my 18 year old. Is there anything else you recommend based on this added info? For the younger son, I’ve ordered the Brain Nutrients, Dompamine Support, Optimal Focus and the elecrolytes. But I wonder if there’s anything else to understand when you compare the 2 reports that adds clarity to why the 14 year old seems so much more severely spaced out. I would gladly pay for a Zoom appt if you think that would be better. Thank you! Dani Ham

Hi Dani -

To get to the bottom of this, I highly recommend a consultation with ElizmaLambert.com who can put these together for you.

First look, I see a potential for increased oxidative stress but there are likely other issues.

Don't forget that lifestyle, diet and exposures are significant - and your pregnancy.

Make sure your youngest is eating protein for breakfast - most important meal of the day.

Also make sure he's not on his phone at night or too much - watch his screen time. That's a killer for dopamine.

Giving him the dopamine support as you have above is key and will help support you and him in reducing screen time.

Is there a particular dirty gene that this focus oriented supplement supports? My son has focus issues associated with ADHD but doesn't have a lot of the hyperactivity. He does have an overactive brain at rest according to a SPECT scan. I'm also considering Dopamine support as he seems to have needs for thrills and sugar that I have come to believe are related to a low dopamine situation. His brain scan shows reduced brain activity when he goes to focus.

Hi Dani -

Good question.

Your son sounds opposite to that of mine.

My son's brain was highly overactive according to Dr. Amen's SPECT scan and typical when not tasked.

My son does very well with Optimal Focus which supports healthy acetylcholine production and utilization.*

I believe your son would do well with 1 capsule of Dopamine Nutrients and likely will do better with the added combination of 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients.

Start with 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients first. Do that for a day or two before introducing 1 capsule of Dopamine Nutrients.

If he does well, awesome.

If he finds it's too much, he may do well with the combination of Optimal Focus + Dopamine Nutrients or Optimal Focus + Brain Nutrients (this is my personal favorite combination).

Keep in mind that are brains are very fluid and change.

While now he may need the Dopamine Nutrients and Brain Nutrients, his lifestyle, diet, and enviornment (and hormones) may change to the point he may do best with just Optimal Focus.

My point is there is no one perfect supplement for life for anyone - we change and our supplementation support must change with it.

Having Optimal Focus, Dopamine Nutrients and Brain Nutrients on hand is very handy.

I'd also add in Optimal Electrolyte to make sure he stays healthfully hydrated as 1% dehydrated in the brain causes brain dysfunction.*

Hi Dr Lynch, thank you for all your help. I've really appreciated it so much 🙂 I am doing a lot of your suggestions from previous questions and refer to your book lots. For the last few weeks I’ve only taken the electrolyte and digestive enzymes and increased protein, and stopped all other supplements. (I was taking your Riboflavin 400mg, B6 25mg, another brand of Zinc 15mg, Fish oil and Multi). I don’t think I agree with the Multi’s, …I've been feeling even more anxious, adrenalin, jittery when i take them. I’ve tried MF ones too. These are the other ones you suggested, but I haven’t tried yet - Optimal focus - did try for 1 day and fell asleep, but I was tired that day. Glutathione chewable. Hi Lilly -

I'm glad you're increasing the protein and using the digestive enzymes.

When using Optimal Electrolyte, make sure you are sipping it over a longer period of time and I've found it's especially helpful to take first thing in the morning upon waking up.

I recommend working with a health professional and dial in your hormones as it may be hormonally related.

  • cortisol
  • estrogen
  • progesterone

The DUTCH hormone test is great. Ask them for a referral in your area or a good online health professional.

I feel I am guessing too much here and I believe the testing of the hormones will be helpful.

Hi, I have COPD and would like to know if Optimal Focus can cause bronchoconstriction. Thank you.

Hi Emanuel -

Great point.

I will update the product page accordingly for this.

Optimal Focus supports healthy acetylcholine levels.*

Acetylcholine is a parasympathetic neurotransmitter in the airways that binds to muscarinic receptors on airway smooth muscle when released. This binding causes the muscle to contract which may result in bronchoconstriction.

The target for Optimal Focus is the brain. That said, acetylcholine levels may flow everywhere in the body and we are not in control of that.

Consider:

  • NAC: 1 capsule as needed
  • Glutathione Plus lozenge: 1 lozenge upon waking in the morning and likely another 1-2 lozenges throughout the day
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal PC: 1 capsule after dinner a few nights a week

If you expand on what you're wanting to support cognitively, let me know and I'll see if I can recommend something else.

Brain Nutrients or Dopamine Nutrients may be better suited.

I'm very interested in helping my youngest son and actually his oldest brother who has similar issues. My youngest, 14, is very bright but has ADD. Sometimes he has moments of ADHD issues where he seems a little fidgety but usually he seems low energy and has trouble focusing. At the same time he can be hyper focused on something he loves. He has impulse control issues and seems to seek out thrills in a way that has led me to believe he has low dopamine. He has an addictive personality. He craves carbs and has a terrible sweet tooth and I have to force protein on him. He takes Adderall and doesn't want to go without it, but I do want to get him off of it, especially after reading Dirty Genes and hearing about dopamine Quinone (sp). We've seen it make his brain seem even less functional when he goes off of it now. I have tried L Tyrosine (Jarrow brand) for him and haven't seen much of a difference. What should he take to start this journey? I was thinking of trying your Dopamine support to see if the combination of ingredients helps him. But then I just watched your YouTube with Dr. Tyna and was very interested in the conversation about acetylcholine and Optimal Focus. My youngest did a SPECT scan at Amen clinics like Dr. Lynch's son and was told that at rest, my son's brain was very very busy. Not so much when he tried to focus when it seemed to go black. They also said to stop eating gluten because that might be causing swelling in my son's brain. We do our best on that front but still have a lot of issues. I would love to get started on the right products for my son. I've also done a Strategene for my middle son and I'm interested that he has similar COMT gene mutations and MTHFR issues but yet doesn't have the same behavioral issues or focus issues (though he does say that sometimes reading is hard for him). I ran a Strategene report and saw that there was an issue with his COMT gene but it was unclear. The report says: An Intermediate COMT Haplotype . There are a lot of other SNPs noted on the report as well and notably it seems that his MTHFR gene is quite slow: SNP: MTHFR C677T rs1801133 (+/+, AA). Lastly, I was looking for mention of APOE on his Strategene report as it came up on the Youtube I was watching where Dr. Lynch was discussing acetylcholine. I don't see anything about "APOE" on our report but I of course am in love with the idea of finding a "genius pill" for my own son like Dr. Lynch did for his! Anyway, what should we try? Thank you!

Hi Dani -

This question looks familiar as I believe you asked one already a different day.

I do think Brain Nutrients for both your sons along with Dopamine Nutrients will be helpful.

I also think that having all three on hand is the way to go:

  • Brain Nutrients
  • Optimal Focus
  • Dopamine Nutrients

That way they can switch them around and see what works best for them.

If he is experiencing success with Adderall, that's dopamine support so the combination of Brain Nutrients plus Dopamine Nutrients supports healthy dopamine levels.*

One cannot be on Adderall and these supplements at the same time - it's too much and significant side effects will occur.

You are correct that Adderall makes harmful and toxic dopamine quinones - which is why I also recommend Brain Nutrients. Brain Nutrients supports a healthy brain.*

I'd try Optimal Focus at some point as well - possibly stacking but trying it by itself too - but alone I don't think it will work well.

I think your boys need a combination of the three - and lower amounts of each - like 1/2 to 1 lozenge and 1 capsule of each.

The Fish Oil and the Optimal Electrolyte are also essential.

I just ordered Optimal Focus for my 14 year old daughter. She currently takes NuAdapt to help with anxiety related to adhd. Can you tell me if there would be any adverse interactions with these two together? NuAdapt contains: Bacopa Extract Ashwaganda Root extract Rhodiola rosea root extract Eleuthero Root extract L-Theanine Phosphatidylserine

Hi Kelly -

It is ok to combine them both and it may help actually.

Consider using 1 capsule of Optimal Focus to start along with 1 capsule or serving of the other one.

Hi sir. I previously bought a bottle of Optimal Focus produced in June 2023 from iHerb website. I want to know when the shelf life of it is. I tried to find it by myself but failed. Thank you very much.

Hi Suzhe -

We are currently underway with official stability testing - and it takes years to actual data.

With a supplement like Optimal Focus, typical shelf life is 3 years past the date of manufacture.

You're looking at a 2026 date or so.

Once we have exact lab confirmation, we will update the bottle with EXP on the bottom vs Made On.

Thank you for asking!

Hi Dr. Lynch In continuation of my previous question (copied below), i am referring to "microcrystalline cellulose" which is the last ingredient in the list of ingredients. I open the capsule and use the contents for other products to get rid of the cellulose capsule, however for those products that have "microcrystalline cellulose" inside the capsule, I can't take them as i am allergic to it. Thanks! Hi Farhan - The capsule is made from cellulose so you can open the capsule and pour the contents onto a bite of food. Most capsules are made from cellulose. In health, Dr. Lynch Farhan Q.2 hours ago Hi Is there a variation of this product without microcrystalline cellulose? Thanks Farhan

Hi Farhan -

We do use MCC (the material we use is allergen free, non GMO and GRAS) as an other ingredient to support a unique blend and flowing of our ingredients into capsules.

You're correct then that even if you open the capsule, some will be in the powder itself.

What people don't realize that it is very important that the main ingredients have to flow well into capsules so there is even distribution of each ingredient in the amount needed in every capsule across thousands of bottles. That's very hard to do - and we do it.

We are coming out with a chewable Kids Optimal Focus here in the Fall that should be free of MCC.

If my son is taking Optimal Focus for Slow MTHFR (677t homozygous), Slow Nos3, slow MAOA. Slow PEMT, Fast COMT, and complicated GST/GPX, would he need to take fish oil also since this looks to have DHA in it? I'm trying to figure out a good cocktail for him. We are planning on doing this... Glutathione lozenge upon waking MF children's multi, Optimal focus, and fish oil with protein based breakfast 1 histamine probiotic after dinner. He is a text book ADHD kid (diagnosed in elementary school) with NON STOP fidgeting, addicted to video games, impulsive (although getting better with age-hes 12). He is starting to have some moodiness and mood swings. Not sure if that's related to puberty or not. He does well academically and seems to care about his grades so no major concerns with that, but he does have a tendency to rush through work or other activities. Also has some allergy like issues-constant running nose, frequent headaches, itchiness, bumps on the back of his arms, sneezing. I just want to give him the best to support his genetics and symptoms he struggles with. Thank you

Hi Kylie -

Your plan is pretty solid.

I'd move the Fish Oil to after dinner along with the ProBiota HistaminX.

Additionally, in his water bottle when school starts, have him put in a serving or two of Optimal Electrolyte with filtered water.

Before bed, he may do well with Histamine Nutrients 1 capsule to support healthy histamine levels.*

If his histamine symptoms get worse from eating or drinking, consider supporting healthy histamine levels at that moment with Histamine Digest.* He can take this with each meal or as needed.

Hello, Is there a way of finding out if supplements will interact with prescription medication you might be taking. I quite often ask my Dr and they just say they are unsure about a lot of supplements. I just purchased optimal focus, but I'm on a low dose of Quetiapine for sleep (I read that it's a acetylcholine receptor antagonist..) - would this be ok to take together as Optimal focus mentions acetylcholine? The only other main one I've heard of is not taking Betaine HCl if you have gastritis. Warm regards

Hi Lily -

My quick research shows that Quetiapine is:
"Although the mechanism of action of quetiapine is not fully understood, several proposed mechanisms exist. In schizophrenia, its actions could occur from the antagonism of dopamine type 2 (D2) and serotonin 2A (5HT2A) receptors."

It does not affect acetylcholine directly - rather dopamine and serotonin.

Optimal Focus supports healthy acetylcholine levels so if you're taking it in the morning, you should be good to go.*

If you are finding success by supporting healthy dopamine and serotonin levels before bed, you may want to support healthy histamine levels as histamine triggers release of dopamine and serotonin in the brain.*

Consider:

  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule in the morning upon waking
  • Histamine Nutrients: 1-2 capsules before bed
  • Lithium Orotate: supports a healthy calm mind before bed as well

My counselor believes I have ADHD. I am a 40yr old male and have never taken meds for it. My current job is very detailed and I am having the same struggles I had in school. Before going the perscription medicine route I would like to try optimal focus. I am currently taking 20MG of Lexapro per day. It is something I am getting off of but it sounds like it will take a little time to do it safely. Can I take optimal focus now or do I have to be off of Lexapro first? I'm looking to support focus retention. Thank so much

Hi Jason -

Lexapro is a medication that supports serotonin levels in the brain.

Optimal Focus is something that can be taken along side Lexapro.

I recommend starting with 1 capsule first, wait 20 minutes and see if you feel any different. If not, consider taking another capsule, wait 20 minutes and see if you feel different, if not, take a 3rd.

The healthy supportive focused effects of Optimal Focus can be felt at times into the next day. Take only as needed.

I believe you'll love it :)

I have a 13 year old son who struggles with focus and attention. He was diagnosed with dyspraxia when he was younger but I'd say it's a mild case. He sometimes zones out during school and sports. He also has quite a bit of anxiety and struggles to fall asleep due to ruminating/intrusive thoughts. I wondered if Optimal focus would be a good fit? He is not hyperactive, he has actually always been more low energy. Is there another supplement you think would be a better fit? Thanks!

Hi J -

I believe you're on the right track.

I don't think it's a one supplement 'fix' however.

I believe there's a combination of things going on here - as there usually are.

Consider:

  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule in the morning with breakfast to support healthy levels of acetylcholine which are associated with a calm healthy approach to things.*
  • Brain Nutrients: upon waking up first thing in the morning, consider 1/4 to 1/2 a lozenge to support healthy drive and healthy energy in the morning.* He can take a little bit more throughout the day as needed. I prefer smaller amounts more often than a lot at once as a lot at once leads to headaches.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: upon waking in the morning, sip a glass of this in filtered water to support healthy energy and clarity.*
  • Kids Multivitamin Chewable MF: consider 1/2 to 1 chewable a few times a week with a protein based breakfast to support overall health.*
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner to support overall cell membrane and brain health around 5 nights a week or so.*

I have a condition called Cervical Dystonia (neurological condition), and they think too much acetylcholine plays a role in making the muscles tense and overactive. When I saw your IG post about this product helping Cholinergic deficiency and you mentioning muscle coordination, I started researching. Any thoughts on if this product may benefit this condition?

Hi Kimberly -

Optimal Focus supports healthy acetylcholine levels so I am not sure if it is right for you or not.*

From my quick research, seems that cervical dystonia is caused by:

  • dopamine excess
  • GABA deficiency
  • high histamine (which can contribute to both low GABA and high dopamine)

This combination may be partially caused by:

  • inflammatory responses
  • slowed methylation (high homocysteine)
  • high mental stress
  • persistent infections
  • high oxidative stress and low antioxidants

Consider:

  • working with a health professional from our referral list. ask my team for it.
  • Lithium Orotate: consider 1 capsule 1 daily any time of day. This supports healthy GABA levels.*
  • Optimal Electrolyte: consider 1-3 servings a day to support healthy muscle function and hydration.*
  • Optimal PC: consider 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy cell membranes and a healthy calm mind.*
  • Fish Oil: consider 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy cell membranes.*
  • Histamine Nutrients: 1-2 capsules in the morning and 1-2 capsules before bed to support healthy histamine and healthy dopamine levels.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: consider 1 capsule after dinner to support a healthy histamine level in your microbiome.*
  • Histamine Digest: if experiencing high histamine symptoms, and needing more support, take 1 capsule with each meal to support healthy histamine levels in the gut which then reduces the absorption of histamine throughout your body.*

Can this help with encephalitis? Or be taking when you have encephalitis??

Hi Jane -

Viral or bacterial encephalitis may attack the acetylcholine receptors of the brain. Not only that, but the inflammatory response to these infections destroys acetylcholine by increasing the production of the acetylcholinesterase enzyme.

By supporting healthy acetylcholine levels, one may experience a healthy brain.

Optimal Focus supports healthy acetylcholine levels by supporting healthy production, healthy activation and healthy maintenance of the acetylcholinesterase enzyme.*

Consider:

  • Optimal Focus: take 1-3 capsules as needed in the morning to support healthy acetylcholine levels.*
  • Fish Oil: take 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy cell membranes.*
  • Optimal PC: take 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy cell membranes and cognition.*
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenges: take 1/2 to 1 lozenge upon waking in the morning to support healthy glutathione levels which are essential for a healthy brain.*
  • Optimal Electrolyte: drink 1 to 3 servings a day to support healthy hydration and brain function.*

Of course, work with your healthcare professional to work on fighting the cause of the encephalitis.

Can my daughter take this with stress nutrients? Will it work if she only takes it as needed? Lastly, will she develop any kind of dependency on it?

Hi Chris -

Great questions.

Here's my thoughts to consider:

  • Phosphatidyl Serine: this accompanies Optimal Focus better than Stress Nutrients as it is geared more for the brain. She can take 1 capsule in the morning with breakfast to support a sense of calm focus.*
  • Optimal Focus: she takes 1-3 capsules on an as-needed basis to support a healthy calm focus.* She will not become dependent upon it at all.

My son uses this often only when he has tests that day or a big presentation or a major sporting event he has to perform in.

Now that it is summer and he is not competing in sports or in school, he is not using Optimal Focus.

Is this safe for an 8 year old? Looking for something going the more natural route to help to support my son . He has not been tested but I think he may struggle with add/adhd . Very hyper and impulsive. Just this year it seemed to start affecting his school work as well. His attention span is next to none. He weighs about 63 lbs ?

Hi Julie -

It's a balance between acetylcholine and dopamine.

I agree that Optimal Focus is the first thing I'd try with him.

Consider opening 1/2 a capsule and putting on a bite of food.

You should notice something that day and within an hour.

If you aren't noticing anything, try 1 full capsule the following day at breakfast.

Again, in one hour you should notice something.

If still no changes at all, it may be the wrong supplement.

In that case, consider opening a capsule and putting 1/2 of Dopamine Nutrients on a bite of food.

Repeat as above.

If nothing, then consider combining the two of Optimal Focus + Dopamine Nutrients.

One of my boys does very well on just Optimal Focus - and at times he uses Brain Nutrients.

My other two boys enjoy combining Optimal Focus with Dopamine Nutrients the best - and at times adding in Brain Nutrients.

I like using Optimal Focus + Brain Nutrients. These two bottles are on my desk.

I'd also have your son take 1/2 a lozenge of Glutathione Plus lozenge when he wakes up in the morning along with a glass of 1/2 scoop of Optimal Electrolyte in filtered water.

Make sure he's eating a protein based breakfast like eggs, meat, collagen, whey protein.

And make sure he's not eating sprayed fruit. He needs to eat organic berries and fruit as sprayed fruit increases ADHD.

I have a question about optimal focus. I’ve been diagnosed with ADD for a long time and I’m finishing up a bottle of optimal focus. I’ve tried 1 cap, 2 caps and even 3 caps and still feel nothing. Do you maybe have any reason as to why this may be? One thing to mention is I have sibo so I’m not sure if that might be a reason. Thank you

Hi Matthew -

ADD is associated with low dopamine levels.

Optimal Focus supports healthy acetylcholine levels.*

What you need to do is to support healthy dopamine levels.

Consider:

  • Dopamine Nutrients: 2 capsules with breakfast to support healthy dopamine levels.*
  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge with breakfast to further support healthy dopamine formation.*

My boys also 'stack' Optimal Focus with Dopamine Nutrients and Brain Nutrients.

If you are wanting to try that - and I recommend it - consider:

  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule
  • Optimal Focus: 1 capsule
  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge

This is a good start. You can always increase if you need.

SIBO is associated with a sluggish gallbladder and weak stomach acid and weak digestion.

For SIBO, consider:

  • Gallbladder Nutrients: take 2 capsules before dinner to support healthy bile production and bile flow which is needed to support a healthy microbiome.*
  • Saccharomyces Boulardii: take 2 capsules after dinner to support a healthy microbiome that is unfavorable to SIBO.*

Follow up after trying these. You should experience benefits quite quickly.

Jul 17, 2024, 12:04 PM PDT Hello Dr. Lynch I heard your interview on Dr. Tyna’s podcast. I’m writing to you about my daughter: She is a rising college freshman; 18.5 years old. Three years ago, at the start of her menses cycle, she became angry – violently angry. She threatened suicide several times. Tried to run away. CPS got involved _which was good – as they provided good support. We finally found her a wonderful psychiatrist. She is on Wellbutrin 37.5mg and was recently diagnosed with PCOS. And is taking a bc pill. She started vaping at 16 to help manage the anxiety and depression and got hooked. She also started smoking pot to ‘calm down.’ She has tried to quit vape and has found it very difficult. Would your product Optimal Focus be a good fit for her? She is a smart kid; had ambitions to skate college hockey and had the skills too. At 15 she was recruited to skate for a fancy prep school and was excited to be a part of that culture. Two years later she withdrew her admission, returned to public school and skated for a club team. We supported her decision. We live in Westchester County NY and I don’t see any practitioners local to my area. I greatly appreciate your time help and guidance. Warm Regards Deb Ann 914-262-9599

Hi there -

Thank you for your detailed question. If you can edit out your phone number, that would be great as I cannot. :)

I don't want you being called by anyone you don't expect or pretending to be me.

I like your thinking.

Here's some things to consider:

  • DIM+I3C: have her take 1 capsule of this on Day 9 to 15 or so - a few days before ovulation, during and a couple days after - to support healthy estrogen levels.* Birth control pills mess up the liver and increase estrogen.

  • Optimal Focus: take 1-3 capsules as needed to support healthy acetylcholine levels.* Vaping increases dopamine and acetylcholine so this would be a good support for her.

  • Dopamine Nutrients: take 1-2 capsules of this BUT if she is taking Wellbutrin, then she should not take this in addition. It's one or the other as Dopamine Nutrients supports healthy dopamine levels.* Wellbutrin supports keeping dopamine inside the brain longer but it does nothing for actually increasing dopamine in the brain. Talk with her psychiatrist about this.

For PCOS:

  • this is a blood sugar issue mainly. Consider looking into myo-inositol on Amazon. She may do well with 2 grams of myo-inositol a day but she should start slowly. Start with just 500 mg and work her way up to 2 grams daily.
  • Berberine. She may do well with berberine as well - 1 capsule a day with dinner to support healthy blood sugar levels.

Ask my team for a referral to a health professional - we have a short list that you can do online consultations with. Elizma Lambert is great as is Dr. Shelese Pratt.

Hi there! I read dirty genes after my 8 year old son was diagnosed with PANDAS. We’ve seen a lot of improvement in behavior/mood with diet changes (GF/DF/egg free) and his supplement regimen (neurotrophin, strep nosode, magnesium, fish oil). He is currently on TRS and glutathione over the summer. I am hoping to find a product to help with his attention span once school starts back up. He struggles with wandering thoughts and staying focused and on task. He was evaluated for ADHD and we were told he does not score for it, but does have some of the inattentive symptoms as well as mild social anxiety. Ex. He loves playing basketball at practice, but shuts down at games and can barely even pass the ball. Would you recommend that he try optimal focus or brain nutrients? A combo? Thanks for all of the work you do!!!

Hi Danielle -

Given that he shuts down in games and does well at practice, Optimal Focus is my recommendation for you to consider.

Consider:

  • Optimal Focus: 1/2 a capsule 4 days on and 3 days off on a bite of food in the morning
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner to support a healthy microbiome.*
  • Phophatidyl Serine: 1 capsule before bed and possibly another one in the morning along with the 1/2 capsule of Optimal Focus to support healthy focus and mood.*

So will Acetylcholine make me more anxious? I’m on your serotonin nutrients right now, optimal, magnesium, zinc chewable, NAC, ox bile 125, vitamin D/K2 liquid, vitamin A, liquid, optimal, electrolytes every morning, sometimes the optimal vitamin C powder, depending on how I feel for the day, and I take separately Heart & Soil company supplements for my other supplementation. I’m trying to figure out how to get back off of diazepam after an emergency operation a couple weeks ago (6/22). But I don’t want to stay awake at night. I keep having nightmares, I’m severely anxious. I don’t know if it’s the post anxiety from the meds they had me on or if it’s remaining anesthesia, etc., and the pain meds afterwards and of course the diazepam. My diazepam dose is now been lowered to taper off again ASAP however since I deal with ADHD already and severe anxiety, I’m worried Acetylcholine May make me even more anxious, not able to sleep, etc. The combination of three optimal, magnesium in the evening and three optimal magnesium in the daytime morning now along with one serotonin neutron at night. In addition to one serotonin nutrient in the morning has really helped me since, the operation. Just wondering if getting back on optimal focus will actually help in this situation since it helped before, but not as much as I would have hoped. Thank you in advance!

Hi Rachelle -

Optimal Focus does seem to make some people more anxious and others it is perfect.

Instead of Optimal Focus, here's what I think you should consider:

  • Lithium Orotate: 1 capsule with some food any time of day or night - take as needed. The support occurs within about 20 minutes. This supports healthy glutamate and GABA levels and BDNF.* I suspect taking one before bed should really assist with healthy sleep onset.*
  • Phosphatidyl Serine: 1 capsule with breakfast and 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy cortisol levels.*
  • Serotonin Nutrients: 1 capsule before bed to support healthy sleep duration and healthy dreams vs scary ones.*
  • Gallbladder Nutrients: 2 capsules before dinner to support healthy bile production and bile flow which likely got altered from the surgery and medications.*

Make sure you only take the Lithium Orotate on an as needed basis. If you feel great, skip it. If you feel you need support, take 1.

Hi Dr. Lynch, I'm experiencing brain fog and memory loss. I've started taking Brain Nutrients, the glutathione lozenge and recently added Optimal Focus. I think they're helping. I was wondering if you recommend adding anything else? I'm 47. I'm considering trying HRT to see if that will help because I'm also having a mix of perimenopause symptoms. Just wanted to check to see if these 3 the right choices for someone in my situation? Thanks for your help! Also, just wanted to add that these question and answers are really helpful. It's a really nice feature. I feel like I've learned a lot by just reading through the list.

Hi Karen -

Great foundation.

I'd add in Dopamine Nutrients.

Here's why.

As you're nearing post-menopause, your dopamine levels naturally drop because your estrogen levels drop.

The Dopamine Nutrients when taken along with Brain Nutrients will provide what you're looking for I suspect.

Try that combination along with a serving of Optimal Electrolyte.

Optimal Focus can help likely as well but do try the Dopamine Nutrients and Brain Nutrients first.

I'm glad you're learning from the Q and A.

So am I :)

I learn a lot from you all.

Is a break period still needed if I'm taking every other day?

Hi Ann -

Everyone is different.

I'd say you're good with every other day.

I also recommend not taking it if you don't actually need it for the day. There are some days you're just relaxing and don't need the support. Those days consider trying without.

If you find that you need it, then by all means, take it.

You can also adjust how many capsules you are taking - some days just 1 capsule and other days the full 3 capsule serving if needed.

I do well usually with just 1 or 2.

Hi, My son has ADHD & anxiety which can be interpreted as a learning disability. He’s struggled with school for most of his life because he couldn’t focus and has low motivation & perseverance. But ever since I started to manage his education since high school, he’s been doing well and now will be attending one of the top colleges. As he will be leaving home this Fall, I won’t be able to “manage” his academic life and I wonder what would be the best supplement he should take to help with managing the schoolwork and focus on his studies. He is a very happy and energetic person otherwise. Thank you!

Hi Heather -

I hear you on this.

I have two sons in college now and it can be demanding in many ways.

Here's what my sons do to perform well in school - and it depends on the day - they don't have a 'set protocol':

  • Optimal Focus: supports a sense of calm healthy focus for those who get test-based anxiety or get distracted from sounds while studying.* It provides a sense of deep focus that's quite lasered in how it feels - it's non stimulating. Start with 1-2 capsules in the morning with a protein based breakfast.
  • Dopamine Nutrients: stacking this with Optimal Focus is often what my boys do. They usually use 1 to 2 capsules to support healthy motivation and learning in addition to the 1-2 capsules of Optimal Focus.*
  • Brain Nutrients: upon waking, take 1/2 to 1 lozenge to provide healthy clarity and healthy brain energy for the first few hours of the day. When stacked with Focus and Dopamine, it adds a level of intensity and clarity.
  • Phosphatidyl Serine: if he finds himself stressed out or needs support for a healthy sense of calm focus and learning, take a capsule of this. My boys don't use this one as they don't need it usually but your son may.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: sip a serving or two of this while he is studying. Dehydration causes all sorts of poor performance as the brain requires a lot of water and electrolytes.

Hi Dr. Lynch, Are there any ingredients in Optimal Focus that can lower estrogen levels in the body?

Hi Elizabeth -

Not directly, no.

Choline can support healthy estrogen levels indirectly but it's indirect.*

Are you finding that your estrogen levels are changing while taking Optimal Focus?

Hi! My son is 8. He’s been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. We’ve tried concerta which I hate the side effects and have taken him off it. He is highly sensitive and emotional. What do you recommend?

Hi Erica -

I recommend 1/2 a capsule of Optimal Focus. Mix it in a bite of food.

We are coming out with Kids Optimal Focus in a chewable which will be great for him - not ready yet.

Would it be okay to take optimal focus and l tyrosine at the same time? For the purposes of adding acetylcholine and norepinephrine to your brain function, respectively.

Hi Ariston -

Yes you may do that.

My kids often combine 1-2 capsules of Optimal Focus with 1-2 capsules of Dopamine Nutrients (which has 500 mg of tyrosine in 2 capsules or 250 mg each capsule).

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Hi dr. Lynch I’ve been looking at your dopamine, optimal focus, and brain nutrients supplements and I’m not sure on which to order. With N.E.T testing i show my body has trouble producing choline, dopamine, and phenylethylamine. Because choline is used to make acetylcholine would it be good for me to get optimal focus? I read the add adhd post from last year you wrote and can’t tell which i am. I don’t know if i need to be slowed down or need a “pick me up” stimulant. Hope to hear back. Thank you for your time and hard work!

Hi RC -

Yes - it is tricky and I'm working on making it more clear.

Here's what I recommend:

  • I'd combine 1 capsule of Optimal Focus with 1 capsule of Dopamine Nutrients.

It's very common to stack nootropics as everyone is different.

From the look of it - you need to be picked up but gently and this combination supports that.

I recommend using Optimal Focus first - just 1 capsule.

If you feel great from that, then stay on it and do not add in the Dopamine Nutrients.

If you feel nothing from Optimal Focus, stop.

Then next day take 1 capsule of Dopamine Nutrients in the morning with breakfast - a protein based breakfast - eggs, meat, whey or collagen smoothie for example.

If you feel great on Dopamine Nutrients - great. Stay on that.

If you feel you need more of a lift, then that's when I'd combine 1 Focus with 1 Dopamine.

Play with it.

Some days you will want one or the other and other days you want to mix. It really depends on how you feel.

By taking them separately over different days, you'll learn how you feel from them which is key.

You'll feel the effects in about 30 minutes after taking it - max. Usually people feel them faster.

Hello Dr. Lynch, I've been using Optimal Focus on days I need to be "well" focused. I have ADD & I also use Brain nutrients and Dopamine Nutrients (when I know it's going to be super stressful & I have to "be super pleasant"). Sometimes I use the Optimal Focus, 3 or 4 days in a row. Can the "off time" be adjusted if you need to use it less than 5 days in a row? What happens if you need to be focued for, say, 7 days?

Hi Deborah -

I'm happy to hear you are experiencing benefits ;)

Yes, you may adjust as needed.

What's important to understand is you need to think how your brain is responding to these supplements.

In the beginning, when dopamine and acetylcholine levels are low, your brain responds by saying thank you and produces healthy amounts of dopamine and acetylcholine.*

If you keep taking dopamine and acetylcholine when it's not needed, your brain says, "There is too much acetylcholine and dopamine and I'm going to reduce my sensitivity to it by reducing how many receptors I have available."

That's what we don't want.

It's a balance.

On days you need it, your levels are likely low and you want to and deserve them to be at a healthy level.

The key is not to push your levels in the 'high' range by getting 'greedy' thinking you want to feel even 'more focused' when you are already significantly improved.

It's so human to feel not good, then experience feeling better and then wanting even better.

That's the balance.

This is why I mention to take days off because I want your brain to rest and not down regulate how many receptors it has available.

I also think by switching from Dopamine Nutrients to Optimal Focus to Brain Nutrients and back around again, that's a good way to give your brain a break with less days off.

Be sure you are hydrating as well with Optimal Electrolyte.

Your brain requires a lot of hydration for healthy neurotransmission and Optimal Electrolyte will support this.*

You may require less nootropics by using Optimal Electrolyte. Make a glass, sip it and see how you do.

My teen has been taking Optimal Focus for ADD type personality. It has helped to clear her mind where she does not feel like she is chasing 100 things all the time, but feelings of anxiety increase while taking it. She is only taking half a capsule every 2-3 days. We tried a whole capsule & it was way too much for her. What do we need to add or do differently?

Hi Julie -

I would add a capsule of Phosphatidyl Serine:
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/phosphatidyl-serine

This takes the 'edge off' from Optimal Focus and gives it a smoother ride.

Coming in 2-3 months is a Kids Optimal Focus Chewable which is 2 chewables per serving which is equivalent to 1 capsule. Thus, 1 chewable should be perfect for her.

Any lifestyle/supplement suggestions for a 14yr old male who still has bed wetting incidents? We have diet, lifestyle, environmental fairly well tuned in (I’m a health coach and work at a small local supplement store) I have heard that it can often cease with puberty, which he has not yet hit, but I have no idea of there’s merit to that. He was taken to a urologist around age 5. Nothing “unusual” was found. He is borderline ADHD, managed without meds (mostly Seeking Health supplements- we love Optimal Focus!) I have never had him tested, but I am homozygous MTHFR677TT Just looking for anything that may help? I know you are no diagnosing, treating, or curing anything. Thank you!

Hi Denise -

I'd do a few additional things for him.

Bladder control is sympathetic activity.

I'd consider giving him Adrenal Cortex with breakfast a few days a week.

I'd also give him ProBiota HistaminX after dinner and a Histamine Nutrients before bed to support healthy histamine levels.

Bedwetting can also be due to high histamine levels.

I've also noticed that when I support with Testosterone Nutrients (not available yet - I've been testing it for a year), I do not wake up to pee at night and I sleep through the entire night. When I don't take it, I have to get up and go pee.

That said, he may also do well with a capsule of two of Optimal Man with breakfast. I'd start with just 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast. This supports healthy testosterone levels as well as a solid multivitamin.*

Keep in mind the more testosterone you push during puberty, the more at risk he is for acne. Keep an eye on his acne. If it gets worse, then stop Optimal Man and give him Skin Nutrients.

I'd also give him 1/2 a lozenge of Glutathione Plus Lozenges in the morning upon waking up to support a clear head and healthy energy levels.*

Then, during the day, he should sip on electrolytes. Consider a serving of Optimal Electrolyte in a water bottle with filtered water.

Make sure before bed he is not eating anything high histamine or drinking high histamine.

Snag a copy of our Histamine Workbook - it will be very good for you as well as a health coach. You'll learn a lot fast and be able to better serve your customers at the store.

Do you offer Seeking Health at your supplement store? You should :)

This should help your son a lot.

NOTE: On the days he is not peeing his bed and he wakes up feeling quite good, do NOT give him Adrenal Cortex or Optimal Man. Skip it those days. On the days he wakes up at night to pee or feels tired in the morning, then he needs both to support healthy energy levels.*

Before bed, if he feels that he's going to just knock out fast, skip taking Histamine Nutrients. On nights he feels that he's going to be staring at the ceiling, he needs to take Histamine Nutrients before bed to support healthy histamine levels and therefore a healthy onset of sleep.* Teach him these things so when he's on his own, he can take care of himself. My boys are already learning these skills. Some are better than others ;)

Best,
Dr. Lynch

Is it safe to give my teenager or take myself without doing the genetic testing first?

Hi Pam -

Yes it is.

Genetic testing does not dictate whether a supplement should be used or not.

If the symptoms list matches or is similar to what is listed on the product page, then Optimal Focus is a good choice.

Start with just 1 capsule in the morning.

I listened to a podcast that Dr Lynch talked about using optimal focus to help his son in school. I have an 8 year old daughter with troubles in school. We have had her tested and she has been diagnosed with a learning disability in reading and short term recall. It’s heart breaking to see her struggle and to see her frustration. Is this something she could take at a lower dose instead of the 3 capsules?

Hi Alicia -

She definitely needs less than 3 capsules - I'd say even 1/2 capsule mixed in a bite of organic applesauce.

I am currently making a Kids Optimal Focus - it will be available in a couple months.

The potency of this will be 2 chewables which is equivalent to 1 capsule of Optimal Focus.

I'd also have her sip 1/2 serving of Optimal Electrolyte in the morning - or better yet - put in her water bottle for school and have her sip 1 serving throughout the school day.

What if you are methyl sensitive (how do you really know) but definitely lack motivation, focus, energy and can be depressed at times? Seems focus would be right. By the way we really appreciate that Dr. Lynch takes time to answer. It increases our confidence in the answers and products.

Hi Lisa -

I agree.

Being 'methyl sensitive' is a tricky issue to pin point because is it really being sensitive to methyl groups, high histamine, high serotonin, high dopamine or other factors?

I actually recommend Dopamine Nutrients for you based on what you shared.

Consider starting with 1-2 capsules in the morning with or without food.

Additionally, I'd consider waking up with 1/2 lozenge of Brain Nutrients. This way you're supporting healthy biopterin levels.* Biopterin is needed to make dopamine. Some people need additional support for biopterin and some people do not.

In your case, I would get both Dopamine Nutrients and Brain Nutrients.

Start low.

1/2 lozenge of Brain Nutrients with 1 capsule of Dopamine Nutrients.

Be sure your breakfast contains protein - not just carbs. This is a must for healthy mood.

Hello again. I recently asked a question about appropriate supplementation for my 84-year-old father (see below for copied text), and your answer was extremely helpful, thank you. Today's question is in response to the recommendations: Both my father and I are living in Madeira, Portugal. That said, I have not been able to find a source for Brain Nutrients, nor Optimal Man, within the EU at any of the distributors that are listed on the Seeking Health website. I realize now that we may not be able to follow your recommendations as noted in the first message due to different standards for supplements in the EU - so I am hopeful you can provide me with some insight about what products that ARE available here which would be helpful for my father. I have found a source in Poland that carries the Optimal Focus, the Probiota HistaminX and the Optimal Electrolyet - but the Brain Nutrients and the Optimal Man appear to be unavailable anywhere on the EU distributor sites. Do you have recommendations for my father that could be a 'work-around' for those products that we can source here in the EU? Thank you for your help! ~M Previous message for your reference: Q: My father is 84 and while there is no official diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer's, he has been struggling with poor memory. He is active, healthy, pretty energetic, eats well, moves well (better than most 20 years his junior - he would qualify as a Super Ager!) - but he has trouble remembering things and is struggling with memory and retention overall. He and I would both like to avoid any pharmaceutical interventions, so I am looking at whether Optimal Focus is the place to start for him, or should we also add in Brain Nutrients? Thank you for any thoughts you can share. Seeking Health's Answer: Hi Melanie - I like your thinking. Yes to both. I would support healthy memory by using 1/2 lozenge to start of Brain Nutrients upon waking. I find it best to ease into this one. After a day or two at 1/2 lozenge, increase to 1 lozenge if needed. He will know and so will others how he is doing. The serving size is 2 lozenges. He may need that full serving size - but again, gradually increase. Too much Brain Nutrients or too fast can lead to headaches or anxiousness. With a healthy protein breakfast, take 1 capsule of Optimal Focus. Start here for a few days. Then, if needed, can work up to 3 capsules as that is a full serving. Most people do not need 3 capsules a day. I use 1 capsule a day at times of Optimal Focus. Almost every day, I use about 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients. I'd also add in Optimal Man. Have him take 2 capsules with breakfast. That should be sufficient. After dinner, I'd have him take 1 capsule of ProBiota HistaminX. Throughout the day, have him hydrate with Optimal Electrolyte. We have a new batch coming soon and will be available in a couple months or so. It's extremely good. For now, have him use the Optimal Electrolyte Unflavored version. Hydration is a big deal for seniors. In health, Dr. Lynch

Hi Melanie -

That's right. We cannot offer PQQ in EU currently. We are working on this issue.

I would replace the Optimal Man with Multivitamin Plus
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/multivitamin-plus

Have him take 2 capsules with breakfast and see how he feels with this amount.

I would also look at Dopamine Nutrients as well. He may do best with stacking 1 capsule of Dopamine Nutrients with 1 capsule of Optimal Focus.

Dr. Lynch

What makes this product not recommended for methyl sensitive?

Hi Leslie -

Thank you for asking.

It is fine for methyl sensitive.

I am having my graphics team update this image.

I am sensitive to methylfolate and methylcobalamin and do very well with Optimal Focus.

I have some CVD genetic risk factors and just learned that my gut produces TMAO which has been linked to CVD, and that choline can contribute to the production of it. Should I avoid Optimal Focus for that reason? Thank you!

Hi Mary -

TMAO is caused by the microbiome.

I recommend using Gallbladder Nutrients before dinner. Start with 2 capsules before dinner.

Then I'd take ProBiota HistaminX after dinner.

When you wake up, take a lozenge of Glutathione Plus Lozenge. This supports a healthy cardiovascular system. Do this every morning. You will feel the benefits in your head and eyes pretty fast. You won't notice the benefits in your heart but they are there.

Optimal Focus is a great supplement to support healthy focus for the type of focus it's supports. There is also Dopamine Nutrients.

Dopamine Nutrients is more for those who need support for drive and motivation and tend to be a bit blue and sad.*

Optimal Focus is great for those needing to settle down, have drive but lack the organizational ability to direct their focus.

It is safe to use.

Hello Dr. Lynch My 16 year old son has ADHD and takes 20mg of Focalin 2x per day. It generally helps him well but I’d like to supplement. Will Optimal Focus be ok with his current medication? Any other suggestions? Thanks so much!

Hi Jennifer -

Focalin works by helping keep dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.

Optimal Focus works by supporting healthy acetylcholine levels.

That said, yes, they be combined.

Dopamine Nutrients supports healthy dopamine levels in the brain. You cannot use this in addition to the Focalin.

Dopamine Nutrients impact is greatly enhanced by adding Brain Nutrients Lozenge.

That said, he may do well with 1 capsule of Optimal Focus and 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients.

Be mindful these are very effective supplements.

Talk with his doctor about these supplements and your desire to use supplements. Your doctor may help your son taper off his medications if desired.

Thanks for the reply. Can I ask please whether is would be ok to take the supplements at the same time as Sertraline? He can’t get in to seeing a psychiatrist for 5 weeks but needing someone thing in the meantime and GP has just prescribed Sertraline yesterday.

Hi Sammy -

Yes, Optimal Focus may be used in conjunction with Sertraline.

There is a relationship between acetylcholine and serotonin.

I'm finding that those with low serotonin do not do as well with Optimal Focus.

If you're looking to support healthy serotonin levels, consider Serotonin Nutrients.

Serotonin Nutrients cannot be used at the same time as Sertraline.

Hi Dr. Lynch, I see similar questions to mine below, but I still want to ask so that I do not miss anything. We started 1/2 capsule of Optimal Focus per morning for my 6 year old, as well as the Children's multi, but is there anything else you would suggest based on the below symptoms? Thank you! attention deficit/ focus issues struggles with reading and writing anxiety low energy low motivation low appetite

Hi Taylor -

It's difficult to pinpoint as I don't have enough information.

They may be struggling with food intolerances, digestive discomfort or not listening to his urge to poo signals. These are important to listen to. Talk with your child about the importance of pooping each day.

I'd consider also 1/2 serving of Optimal Electrolyte first thing in the morning along with 1/4 of a Glutathione Plus Lozenge.

Go for walks with your child or engage in more physical activities if they are lacking. Movement is very important for all these things. Even playing catch in the yard.

Hi Dr. Lunch, I was wondering if I could ask you for some advice. My daughter has been running on the cross country and track team for a while now, but recently I've noticed a change in her mood and behavior. She's been experiencing panic attacks, crying often, and having trouble sleeping. She also throws up before races and has been eating poorly. I'm really concerned about her well-being, especially since she got pneumonia back in October. I start optimal focus and serotonin . Would you happen to have any recommendations or advice on how I can help my daughter manage her emotions and stress levels better? I would really appreciate any insight you may have. Thank you so much for your time and help.

Hi Niki -

I'm sorry to hear this.

I suspect she has been missing her period as well?

If so, she is depleted.

Often times, developing young girls especially, are depleted from continuous strenuous exercise. They are developing fast and also experiencing menses on top of it.

Then they add on heavy training and competition, their body cannot handle it.

Couple things:

  • have her doctor test her serum ferritin level, thyroid and adrenal hormones (saliva test ideally a 4 time a day salivary cortisol test)

  • she must eat protein with every meal. Make her a protein-based smoothie in the morning. Use goat whey protein from NAKED. Available on Amazon. Mix with organic blueberries, goat milk from Meyenberg (https://www.meyenberg.com/) and some honey.

  • consider Kids Multivitamin Chewable MF - 1 chewable with breakfast

  • Iron Chewable with breakfast

  • Serotonin Nutrients - 1 capsule - before bed.

  • Optimal Focus - may support her feelings of calm before a race. Try first on a non-racing practice day - at least one hour prior to her training.

  • Pre-Workout Nutrients - mix 1/2 serving in a water bottle. Sip it 30 minutes before training. Sip the rest of it while training. Ideally, add a scoop of Optimal Electrolyte Unflavored in it so it's a mix of Pre-Workout Nutrient with Optimal Electrolyte. Try on practice days first

  • Make sure her phone is on airplane mode at night before bed.

  • Make sure her screentime isn't excessive at night. Sleep is very important - and teen girls are awful with phones I'm told.

  • Turn off WiFi at night before sleeping

My dad who is 86 and has no diagnosed dementia/alzheimers but has memory struggles. Started him on Optimas Focus and he is taking 2 per day. Notices increased energy but not so much memory improvement. Is this the right supp for him? He is taking M-F and holding S/S. Says today Saturday that he feels different --foggy and no energy. Appreciate any recommendation.

Hi Lisa -

I recommend this combination:

Upon waking, take 1/2 lozenge to start of Brain Nutrients. He may do well with the full serving size of 2 lozenges but best to start out low.

Have the Brain Nutrients on his bed stand so he can wake up and take it right away.

Then, after breakfast, have him take 1 capsule of Optimal Focus with 1 capsule of Dopamine Nutrients.

I'd also add in Multivitamin One MF for him to take with breakfast.

I'd also add ProBiota HistaminX for him to take after dinner.

I am looking for some advice on how to improve my focus and manage my sever anxiety. As someone who is always worrying about everything and everyone in my family, I used to suffer from bad mood outbursts, which made it difficult for me to sleep or get my work done during those days. Recently, I have been researching different supplements that could help me with my focus and anxiety. I came across Optimal Focus and was wondering if you have any experience with it or could recommend any other supplements that might be helpful for me.

Hi Mila -

I'd consider Serotonin Nutrients along with Stress Nutrients.

Here's Serotonin Nutrients:
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/serotonin-nutrients

Take both in the morning with your breakfast.

I do not think Optimal Focus is what you need right now.

If you're having difficulty falling asleep at night, consider Phosphatidyl Serine to support a healthy mood, sense of calm before bed.

Hey Dr. Ben, Would you recommend this for a 9 year old child with possible dyslexia & trouble reading &/or to support the school day? What other products would be good?

Hi Dee -

Great question.

I did a scan of the literature.

There is an association of low acetylcholine and low choline in those with dyslexia.

I would consider:

  • having a protein based breakfast to start his day. Eggs, low histamine sausages, meat, goat milk, goat whey protein smoothie)
  • ditch the dry cereals, juice and pancakes, waffles
  • 1/4 lozenge of Glutathione Plus lozenge upon waking up in the morning. Chew it, hold it for a few seconds, let dissolve, then swallow.
  • 1/2 capsule of Optimal Focus mixed in a bit of organic applesauce followed by a full bite of just applesauce.
  • have him bring a water bottle to school with filtered water and 1/2 scoop of Optimal Electrolyte unflavored and 1/2 scoop of Optimal Electrolyte flavor of his choice)
  • turn off WiFi in the house at night for sleeping.
  • put phones on airplane mode.
  • eat organic fruit or don't buy it. Apples, peaches, strawberries, grapes are filthy if not organic.

I can’t tell if this or Brain Nutrients, possibly, is what my 7yo son needs. He is able to focus and independently complete his homework just fine. Even though his attention is everywhere, he seems to capture everything. Socially, however, he struggles with cues: Blurting out, invading personal space, interrupting etc. He’s very sensitive to rejection or disapproval and is kind to friends but often too much for them.

Hi Jennifer -

I suspect your son may benefit from Serotonin Nutrients.

Consider giving him half the contents of 1 capsule mixed in a bite of organic applesauce.

I'd start there.

Also make sure:

  • his phone is on airplane at night if he has one.
  • turn off WiFi in the house at bedtime (can turn it back on during the day)
  • start his day with protein. No dry cereals or juice. Consider eggs, sausages, meat.
  • make sure his lunches and dinners have healthy protein as well

I'd also add:

  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner

He may need a multivitamin a few days a week.

Consider Kids Multivitamin Chewable MF - 1/2 chewable with breakfast every other day.

I’m having a hard time figuring out if optimal focus, brain nutrients, dopamine nutrients, or serotonin nutrients is what I need or something different entirely. I’m a very detailed person and able to follow direction and complete tasks when necessary, but have low memory, brain fog, slipping over words, exhausted in the morning, low motivation when I don’t need to complete a task right away.

Hi Ashley -

I'd consider:

  • Adrenal Cortex in the morning with breakfast two to three days a week. Only use it on days you wake up really tired, went to pee a few times during the night or woke up way earlier than you wanted.
  • Optimal Glutathione Plus lozenge - 1/2 lozenge - upon waking up. Daily.
  • Multivitamin One MF - 1 capsule with breakfast a few days a week
  • Optimal Electrolyte Unflavored - 1 serving in filtered water upon waking - after your glutathione lozenge dissolves. Daily.
  • ProBiota HistaminX - 1 capsule after dinner. Every night.

Use all of them EXCEPT the Dopamine Nutrients and Optimal Focus.

Start getting the foundation right. Then, see how much additional support you need - if any.

On days you need more support, then consider adding in 1 capsule of Dopamine Nutrients with 1 capsule of Optimal Focus.

That should get you feeling great :)

Hi I have tried taking this several times now, one first thing in the morning but by the afternoon I am incredibly angry. Gave my 9 year old (ASD + ADHD) half a capsule and he had a similar reaction. Any idea what would cause this? Thanks Emma

Hi Emma

Higher levels of acetylcholine may cause anger. I’m not sure why yet.

My research team and I are working on identifying why.

Consider using 1/4 to 1/2 capsule every two to three days.

Keep me posted.

Hi dr I have chronic depression(but not on any medication) and have a lot of exams coming, I'm easily distracted and super procrastinator. Can this supplement work with me? TIA

Hi M -

I don't believe Optimal Focus is what your brain needs.

Based on the input you provided, I would consider starting these supportive supplements below at a lower than suggested use as they are in combination vs stand-alone:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 lozenge
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 capsule
  • Optimal Electrolyte: sip while you are studying

If you feel that you need more support, increase to 1 full lozenge of Brain Nutrients and 2 capsules of Dopamine Nutrients.

Some days you will find you need more and others less.

I also recommend considering taking 1/2 lozenge of Brain Nutrients every 2-3 hours vs just 1-2 lozenges at once. I find that this supports my ability to work longer and more effectively.
I would also consider:

  • Multivitamin One: take with breakfast and only take on days where you feel tired. Skip on days where you wake up feeling a bounce in your step (and you will once again :) )

Can you mix in drink? Anything that makes the taste dissapear? My 9 years old is Having trubbles taking them.

Hi Suziie -

I would open the capsule and mix in a bite of organic applesauce.

I would start with 1/2 capsule first and see how he does with that amount.

If it works well for him, then great!

If it makes him sleepy, then Optimal Focus is not the right supplement - at least for that day.

I would consider Dopamine Nutrients instead if he is not getting the results you're looking for. You can mix Dopamine Nutrients in a bite of organic applesauce as well.

Using 1/4 lozenge of Brain Nutrients may also be useful along with Optimal Electrolyte.

Hi there -

I'd use Stress Nutrients, Lithium Orotate and DIM+I3C to support a healthy mood during this time of month.
