I used to like the berry flavour ..but now it is reformulated and it does not taste good. Why was the flavour changed and will you consider bringing the old taste back.

Hi Elena -

The Berry flavor has been the same for some time. True natural flavors can have some deviation in taste from one lot to the next.

Orange is also quite good.

We have three new flavors coming which is pretty exciting ;)

Hello! I have very thick mucus in my throat and I have very thick saliva. This has been going on for months to the point where it’s very uncomfortable to eat solid and dry foods so I stick to more liquid and very soft foods. I’ve gone to various specialists but nobody has been able to help so far. It all started with really bad cold sores on my lips in July 2024 which developed into painful swallowing, swollen lymph nodes, pain in my neck. It turned into extremely dry mouth and now thick mucus, saliva and sometimes my throat starts to burn after eating. I have been taking the optimal electrolytes for several months as well as a supplement with NAC and Querectin which has helped a bit but after a year like this, getting restless to eat normally again.

Hi Donna -

I suspect you're reacting to foods or something in your environment.

I highly recommend working with a health professional to order a Food Sensitivity Test
https://www.usbiotek.com/tests/96-general-food-panel

A few things to consider:

  • ProBiota Bifido: 1 capsule upon waking 30 minutes before eating
  • Saccharomyces Boulardii: 1 capsule upon waking 30 minutes before eating
  • Digestive Enzymes: 2 capsules with each meal
  • Bile Nutrients: 2 to 4 capsules before dinner
  • Gut Nutrients: 4 capsules before bed
  • avoid dairy products
  • avoid gluten - go gluten free.

Do you add malic acid or citric acid?

Hi Karin -

Can you break down the amount of both creatine and taurine in this product. It says 1.6g - is that split up 50/50? Thanks!

Hi Lynn -

I have to be careful about the disclosure of my formulations as many companies are stealing my formulations.

I cannot disclose the ratio.

Good afternoon! I have an 18 year old daughter with occasional symptoms of light headedness and sometimes blacking out, things go dark, upon standing. Her pediatrician provided a handout on Orthostatic Intolerance and things to try, drinking more fluids and increasing salt in diet. I want to try electrolytes, especially upon waking in the morning. I would like to try the Optimal Electrolytes for her. She takes a while, sometimes more than 30 minutes to drink even 8oz. I’ve been reading answers to other questions about not drinking around meals. She’s not great about eating breakfast, hopefully one day she’ll see the importance and could learn to at least do a homemade protein smoothie. I say all that because I’d love to know how much she would need to drink upon waking and over how long a period is ok because she’s at the age where she wakes close to the time before she needs to head out. I read a response to a question about pre workout as well. She needs more hydration during her 2-3 hour long swim workouts. What guidance do you have on properly hydrating before, during and after these long workouts? Thank you for your time!

Hi Michelle -

Yes, you're absolutely correct she needs more hydration and more salt.

Consider:

  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule in the morning ideally with food but even without food is ok. She needs it in her to support healthy blood pressure.*
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking with added 1/4 tsp of salt from your kitchen. She can mix it in her water bottle. You can put 2 servings with 1/2 tsp of salt in it with filtered water, and she can sip it over time. That would be easiest for her. Orange and Berry are the most popular.
  • Energy Nutrients: 1/2 a lozenge just upon waking up (she can keep it on her bedstand), also take another 1/2 prior to working out and, if needed (she will know) another 1/2 during her workout. She will notice healthy energy immediately.*
  • Protein - yes - she has to provide fuel for her body - it's key - getting her to do a whey protein smoothie would be fantastic. Especially after exercise.
  • Our electrolytes have added creatine, taurine and magnesium which are really good for her performance as well.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

This should help her a lot.

Additionally,

  • check her iron levels especially if she has heavy menses
  • if iron is low, consider Iron Chewable or our Iron capsules and take after a meal any time of day

Does the monk fruit contain Erythritol? Have been using the electrolytes and really like them, but recently read articles linking monk fruit to heart and stroke problems Thanks in advance !

Hi Marcy -

Great question.

There are definitely some monk fruits that use erythritol. We don't use that one - causes really annoying gas issues in many people.

We use erythritol free monk fruit.

Hi! My whole family (16) take these electrolytes without a problem. Two of my family members get the runs when they take them. One of them is 40yrs and the other is 22yrs. Any suggestions to have that not occur? Thank you

Hi Naomi -

Typically if someone is getting the runs from drinking the Optimal Electrolyte, it's a sign that their stomach acid levels are lower than they need to be.

A few things to adjust here:

  • Drink away from meals and sip it more slowly - don't chug. I drink mine over a period ranging from a few minutes to an hour (while working on our ranch or at my desk in the office)
  • Use 1/2 to 3/4 of a scoop at a time and then have two servings like this a day vs all at once.

The creatine and magnesium are in healthy amounts and these can contribute to loose stools in those with weaker digestion.

Hi Dr Lynch, I've been trying to find a clean electrolyte without stevia in it (which is hard to find) for my wife b/c we feel like stevia might be a trigger for her migraines. Do you think monkfruit is a better option and why do you think stevia could trigger migraines? Looking forward to trying this out. Thank you!

Hi Paul -

I've not seen any issues with monk fruit and migraines.

I can say the supportive amounts of magnesium, creatine, ATP, taurine and potassium will support her healthy blood flow.*

Many electrolytes are just expensive flavored sodium, low potassium and hardly if any, magnesium.

Consider for her:

  • Optimal Electrolyte unflavored: this is still a nice taste - and she can add a squeeze of lemon if she wants.
  • Histamine Digest: this supports healthy histamine levels while eating or drinking.* High histamine after eating or drinking is a very common cause of migraines. This could be very helpful for her.
  • Optimal Magnesium: 1 capsule before bed to support healthy blood flow.*
  • Serotonin Nutrients: read about this on the product page. It may be supportive for her or may not. She would take it only on days she needs it and not on days she's feeling great.
  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner to support a healthy liver and gallbladder. The liver and gallbladder are very much associated with hormone levels which are very much associated with migraines.* She should take this at least 3 nights a week possibly nightly for a couple weeks then taper down. She's looking for healthy sleep, healthy blood flow, healthy skin and healthy well formed bowel movements that are easy to pass.*

I'd look at our Histamine Workbook and go through that as well. Type that into our search bar. High histamine is a MAJOR contributor to migraines.

Hi Dr Lynch, I'm looking into some electrolytes for potentially POTS but I believe it was just post viral fatigue ++, but I'm not too sure about the natural flavours and the low-calorie sweetener and I'd like to know more. Initially I was looking for something without natural flavours even having to just make my own because as a Highly Processed food ingredient, I've generally been told to avoid where possible. I am aware that correlation is not necessarily causation here but given the average diet is so full of hidden natural flavours I wonder how much potentially I should be wary. The natural sweetener on the other hand; I too have been invested in the research of the potentially Gut/Brain disruption when calories the body expects with sweetness doesn't come and tends to lead to more hunger. I also wonder about its processing and whether it is considered an UPF as well leading to the same concern as above. Was wondering your thoughts? Feel free to direct me to research, I am a data fiend! Lastly, thoughts on necessary sugars for electrolytes? when asking the seeking health bot, it advises there is no sugar in the electrolytes, but I am aware than some sugar is required for optimal absorption-Would love your thoughts. Thanks again

Hi Ava -

Our Unflavored electrolytes are without any flavors.

Sugar, ie insulin, does support electrolyte absorption as does creatine absorption. We don't add it as people typically have enough sugar in their diet as it is. Having some fruit could be helpful - experiment with it.

Here's some detail on our natural flavors:

Dr. Lynch thank you for all you do, your book and information! My Dad is 89 has had history of hyponetremia not sure the cause...for 6 months he has needed 2 sodium chloride pills to maintain normal levels ( 140). He has a lack of energy so I added your opt. Electrolytes 2X per day because I felt he needed potassium etc. I understand creatine and creatinine are not the same but I thought I read that it can convert to creatinine ? Anyway his creatinine elevated and egfr dropped from 83-53. He drinks 8 cups of water and is 150 pounds. The only medication he is on is Alfulosin and Cialis to help him urinate due to enlarged prostate. He does feel better when he takes the electrolytes but what would increase creatinine. It was sudden as we test his blood every 2 weeks for months an acute kidney injury? BUN was high but then went back to normal. He does have MTHFR heterozygous I do not know about other genes. I am double COMT and double MAO does that mean I got a copy from him? I guess my question is what do you think about the 2 grams of sodium chloride and 2X per day electrolytes. Doctor did an echo and said he has a "sticky Value" but did not specify which and now wants him on 2.5 Norvasc calcium channel blocker. He is slow from Alfulosin. They said he has Parkinson's but I believe its history of pesticides, aluminum ( on hair test and tricyclic antidepressant history for 40+ years. I watched your lecture on Parkinson's any links I would appreciate. Thank you for your time!! BTW all Parkinson medication made him worse does not tolerate at all either sleepy, nasty or shaky. I am afraid the calcium blocker will add to his fatigue :(

Hi Danielle -

I believe you're correct with the pesticide and Parkinson's connection. There is a very well known and researched link between these two.

There are many factors here and I feel it's best to consult with a health professional directly. In this situation, we have to be careful as one change can put pressure on other sensitive organs.

Dr. Chris Bramich at Vital Foundations is well versed with my work as is Elizma Lambert. Both are available telemedicine.

High creatinine can be from muscle wasting, kidney problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, meds to name a few.

Consider:

  • measure homocysteine - needs to be betwen 6-8 umol/L. If elevated, consider using Homocysteine Nutrients to support healthy homocysteine levels.*
  • evaluate toxicity levels with a doctor - heavy metals, etc - as these can aggravate the kidneys, liver, brain as you know
  • I am not a kidney expert but I will say if he feels better using the electrolytes and salt, then it may be beneficial - but I'm not sure.
  • get on a prostate supplement. Life Extension has some good ones.
  • check MCV and MCH for B12and folate deficiency. If low, he may do well with Homocysteine Nutrients or may need Hydroxo B12 with Folinic Acid.

Hi, I am in a low carb / keto diet and had my sodium and potassium levels checked recently. Sodium relatively low (139 mmol/L) and potassium relatively High (4,2 mmol/L). As part of the diet I eat a lot of vegetables rich in potassium. I am affraid og getting too high potassium levels if I use electrolytes with potassium. Is this a true concern? I drink water with Himalaya salt when I get up in the morning to hydrate after the night (and take supplements of magnesium, creatine and taurine).

Hi Emil -

A low carb/keto diet causes one to pee out a lot of sodium.

This is a known side effect of the diet.

I would add a full gram of salt to the Optimal Electrolyte.

Using the Optimal Electrolyte first thing in the morning with the 1 gram additional Himalayan Salt would save you needing to take additional creatine, magnesium and taurine as those are all included.

One needs over 4 grams of potassium daily. One serving of Optimal Electrolyte is 500 mg. There's no concern about higher potassium here especially when adding additional salt.

Is this compatible with heterozygous G6PD deficiency (plus methylation issues)? I am trying to find full spectrum electrolytes (higher in potassium, because of American diet), with little or no extras. Thank you for any thoughts.

Hi A.C. -

This is ok to use yes.

The added Creatine is useful for those with methylation issues as methylation is needed to produce creatine.

Any plans to make a version with a different form of potassium like potassium citrate? Unfortunately for someone like myself with SIBO it seems to affect my digestion and lead to bloating too much, even the unflavored version. Super bummed because I love the product and the energy boost and clean taste it has.

Hi Ryan -

It's best to use the Optimal Electrolyte away from food. This way it does not affect your digestion.

I hear you on the SIBO and bloating.

What I can say is let's work on your SIBO and bloating :)

Consider:

  • Bile Nutrients: 4 capsules before dinner to support healthy bile production and bile flow to support healthy amounts of bacteria in the small intestine.*
  • Saccharomyces Boulardii: 2 capsules after dinner to support a healthy microbiome.*
  • stop snacking if that's happening as it feeds the bacteria all day long.
  • eat 3 meals a day, chew fully before swallowing and eat until 80% full then stop.
  • if experiencing constipation, and poor sleep duration, consider supporting healthy serotonin levels by taking Serotonin Nutrients - 1 capsule after dinner and possibly another one after breakfast.

Does this supplement contain Vitamin B6? I know the label does not indicate it, but my B6 levels are high and I’m trying to locate the cause.

Hi Joshua -

This does not contain B6.

B6 can be elevated on labs potentially from the microbiome.

This may be a sign of SIBO.

Here are some articles for you to read:
https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/nutrition/articles/10.3389/fnut.2022.1031502/full

and
https://elementalhealth.net.au/how-your-gut-microbiome-can-contribute-to-high-b6-in-peripheral-neuropathy/

Consider supporting healthy bile production and flow which are important for healthy bowel motility.* Slow motility and low bile salts emptying in the small intestine are associated with SIBO.

  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner to support healthy bowel motility and bile flow.*

Hello Dr Lynch, I have leaky gut - high zonulin marker, histamine issues, mold toxicity, hpylori, elevated oxoglutaric acid, high staph and strep, low NAC and low stomach acid I am currently taking your bourladii, probiota histamine x, DAO, 5HTP(200), lithum orotate, vitamin c, probiota bifod, fish oil, vitamin d, stress nutrients, zinc carnosine and hcl. I tried the electrolyte it didnt suit me nor did optimal GI, is there any supplement you could suggest to fight disbiosis and hpylori? thank you!!

Hi Lisha -

I have some thoughts for you to consider:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 a lozenge upon waking and another 1/2 later in the day
  • Bile Nutrients: 4 capsules before dinner
  • Zinc Carnosine: 1 capsule after your protein based breakfast and another after dinner
  • Saccharomyces Boulardii: 2 capsules after dinner
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule after dinner

Keep me posted - the Bile Nutrients should have a noticeable impact within 24 hours.

A heavier hitter may be considered if needing it:

  • Ox Bile: 1 capsule right before bed - away from meals.

Do you know why some people get tired from taking creatine? Possibly too much serving size @ 2-5G? Do you ever recommend trying creatine at night instead of morning (strictly creatine without peak ATP)?

Hi Mike -

Creatine is an interesting one.

If taking creatine by itself - not found in Optimal Electrolyte - it can actually contribute to dehydration - and dehydration contributes to fatigue.

Creatine can also increase diarrhea as it's poorly absorbed. And loss of electrolytes contributes to further dehydration.

Some people talk about how high dose creatine - 5 grams - contributes to hypothyroidism - and hair loss.

There are no clinical trials proving either of these that I'm aware of.

I'm most suspect that the higher dose creatine is contributing to actual dehydration contributing to fatigue.

I can say there is a fair amount of creatine in Optimal Electrolyte - a good amount that is well tolerated.

I don't recommend taking creatine at night - I don't think you'll get the benefits - but I could be wrong. Could be worth a trial run.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Is this good for SIBO? I've read that potassium bicarbonate can neutralize stomach acid and affect digestion, leading to bloating.

Hi Ryan -

You're correct. Bicarbonate may indeed lower stomach acid - and negatively affect digestion.

The impact is short lived so as long as you take away from food by 20 - 30 minutes, you're good to go.

One should not drink anything during meals - even water - as this dilutes stomach acid and the enzymes.

This is why I always recommend drinking Optimal Electrolyte:

  • immediately upon waking in the morning as we are most dehydrated at this time and this supports healthy hydration.*
  • during exercise
  • during sauna
  • while working - at your desk or in the yard or wherever you work. Put a serving or two in a liter of filtered water in your water bottle. Sip over time.

Dr. Lynch

Does drinking this break intermittent fasting? Goal would be to drink in morning and keep fasting until noon Thank you

Hi Mike -

That's a very good question and no one has the answer.

Here are my thoughts:

  • It doesn't have any calories so the makers of PeakATP claim it will not break a fast for this reason. I asked them and they just got back to me today.
  • I believe it may break a fast. ATP is the end product of what our food - or fat burn - turns into. If ATP levels are sufficient, then I assume that fat burning, caloric burning or other metabolic triggers would sense this and pause the burning of NADH or fat. Why would the body keep burning fat or NADH if there is sufficient ATP on board? I don't think it would.

Thus, I would hydrate with just filtered water and salt in the morning.

I would use Optimal Electrolyte while:

  • in the sauna
  • exercising
  • working (sipping from your water bottle over time)
  • between meals

Now what does PeakATP do to blood sugar?

A study looked into it:
https://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/Article/2017/05/04/Peak-ATP-GlycoCarn-may-improve-blood-sugar-heart-health-Life-Extension-data/

The research found that users taking PeakATP had significant decreases in blood sugar levels. So maybe I'm wrong and our electrolyte would enhance fasting.

I don't know. :)

I'd give it a trial and see. Test your glucose prior to drinking and after.

And don't get stressed out when measuring your blood sugar as stress increases blood glucose.

;)

I really liked the older version with glycerol /hydroprime. 1) do you have any of the older versions I can buy? 2) if I wanted to add glycerol to this how much should I add

Hi Phil -

The HydroPrime is a fantastic ingredient - the issue is it ruins the stability of the product.

You can find HydroPrime on the internet and add about 1 gram to it.

We have the HydroPrime still in our PreWorkout Nutrients.

Hello. I just tried this product and felt a difference right away. My toddler who is almost 4 loved it as well. I put 1/8 tsp in her 12 oz water bottle. She finished it but I noticed she drank most of it in the evening and while snacking. Should I avoid that next time? I read your answers to other questions and it says to avoid drinking with food and before bed:/

Hi A.T. -

Nice :)

It would be best to have your 4 year old drink the Optimal Electrolyte away from food and a few hours before bed.

The ATP in it provides immediate healthy energy which we do not want before bed.

At 1/8 tsp, that's not much and will not have much of a physiological effect on her. You may use 1/2 a serving during the day and ideally away from food.

Generally speaking, it's best to not drink much during meals as it dilutes stomach acid and your digestive abilities.

My kids love the Orange and Berry the most.

I'm happy to hear Optimal Electrolyte is helping you both!

Every time I try to drink your optimal electrolytes I got pain right side, feels like it burns. Not right away, it usually comes on day 3. Day 4 i got diarrhea. Nausea at day 3. I've tried so many times but every time same reaction. So weird and annoying. I use to drink I high sodium electrolytes and it doesn't give me this feeling. I'm pregnant and brestfeeding my 1 year old so i need my electrolytes but I will stick to the other electrolytes for now. Can't easily take double dose of the high sodium brand and no reaction. Just I don't know why this happened, it's so weird. Would love to hear if you got any thoughts about this. Maybe this supplement isn't for me?

Hi Anna -

That's a bummer.

Given that you're pregnant and breastfeeding, your requirement for Choline is very very high.

I suspect what you're experiencing is associated with your gallbladder.

Gallbladder symptoms increase significantly in women during pregnancy.

This occurs usually due to low choline, low SAMe and low folate/B12 and dehydration.

Consider:

  • SAMe: Take 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy gallbladder during pregnancy. We used to offer it but discontinued it but may be bringing it back. Here's a quality company for SAMe: https://www.lifeextension.com/vitamins-supplements/item02174/same
    https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16965225/

  • Optimal Prenatal: 2-4 capsules with breakfast and 2-4 with lunch. If needing additional support in the afternoon, consider the last couple at this time. This has additional choline in it to support healthy gallbladder function while also supporting a healthy pregnancy and healthy breastmilk for the newborn little one.

Would these electrolytes help with very dry mouth/throat and nose?

Hi Donna -

Hydration is always supportive of dryness wherever it may be.

I do recommend hydrating with Optimal Electrolyte.

Additionally, I recommend evaluating why you're so dry in these areas.

Consider:

  • getting a humidifier especially if you live in an arid area with low humidity. Set it to 50% humidity and keep it in your bedroom, office and wherever you spend most time. Perhaps get a couple.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • check for mouth breathing at night. Consider taping your mouth closed if you can breathe through your nose. Search up 'mouth taping' on Amazon and YouTube to watch these. Breathing through your mouth at night can really dry out the throat.
  • chlorine exposures can really affect mucus membranes. Get a shower filter and filter your drinking water.
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: support detoxification of chlorine and other chemicals which are everywhere. Take 1 lozenge upon waking.

Hello I'm currently having issues with muscle spasms in my front calf on the left side. I've tried this and other supplements but nothing is working. Ive even put magnesium rub on that part of my leg. Any suggestions if this isnt an electrolyte imbalance issue? It's been going on for 5 days. I dont know if Ive over done some electrolytes. I have taken magnesium gkycinate and the rub but I dont know. I'm stumped and worried

Hi Danielle -

If the spasm is isolated to just one muscle of your body, it may be something to do there and not electrolytes.

Consider getting some custom fit orthotics.

High heels can be problematic.

Stretch your calves and your toes.

You may also consider trying Glutathione Plus Lozenge: take 1 upon waking

Of course, check with your doctor if you're concerned.

What does the unflavored taste like? Is it salty or mineral tasting?

Hi Marie -

We used to call it selzer as it kinda tastes like a selzer would.

It's a very mild taste. It's my wife's favorite.

It's not that salty or mineraly tasting but it does have a bit of a taste to it - mild I'd say.

The more filtered water you add to it, the less taste will be there.

For those who want more taste, I usually suggest either adding more electrolyte or using less water.
For those who want less taste, I suggest using more filtered water - a taller glass or larger water bottle.

Hello, I have a very different need for sodium and hydration than many folks as I have genetic disorder, hEDS and POTS. My doctor wants me to get 7-10g of sodium each day along with 3L of water. I drink sea salted water with added coconut water but want to use an electrolyte powder. Is it okay to have several servings of Optimal Electrolyte a day given what I have to manage?

Hi Laura -

I hear you and agree with you and your doctor.

Yes.

Consider:

  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule with your protein based breakfast to support healthy adrenals and healthy cortisol levels.* Low cortisol levels are associated with increased urinary sodium.
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 to 1 lozenge each morning to support healthy levels of glutathione which is key for all body systems.*
  • Optimal Electrolyte: use as many servings as you and your doctor think you need. I recommend adding a couple grams of sodium to each serving of electrolyte. Sip it. This way you don't get bowel upset. If you drink it too fast, you can get loose stools or diarrhea which defeat the purpose of the electrolytes.
  • This way you can drink 4 servings of Optimal Electrolyte a day and get your 8 grams of sodium.
  • By adding in the adrenal cortex and glutathione, I suspect you may be able to reduce how much sodium you need over time.

Just found out I'm pregnant again, 9 months postpartum ( ops, haha it OK we actually are soo happy about it ) Anyway I crave water but it's just going through me. Still breastfeeding and I'm so dizzy somedays I know I need a lot of water, electrolytes. I'm currently taking one with 800mg salt, 400mg potassium and 80mg magnesium. It's good but still I'm peeing it out like crazy. I'm wondering if your electrolytes could help with this and how much can I take? Living healty life style eating mindfully and trying everything to support my body cuz I know I need a lot of nutrients now. Except the electrolytes, any recommendations how I can support my body at optimal now when I'm pregnant again? Currently I'm taking: Optimal prenatal Iron chewable Liposomal c Sadly had to ditch gallbladder nutrients, my favourite. Thanks Ben and your team. You're the best

Hi Anna -

Congratulations ;)

I hear you.

A few things could help here.

Consider:

  • Adding more salt to your food.
  • Optimal PC: take 1 capsule after dinner 3 nights a week to support healthy breastmilk, healthy pregnancy and support your gallbladder.*
  • Optimal Electrolyte: this has additional nutrients which support healthy hydration - the creatine and taurine are key for supporting hydration and most electrolytes miss these. You can add 1/4 tsp of salt to this from your kitchen - and 1/4 tsp provides 575 mg of sodium.
  • I'd check your blood sugar, too - just to make sure.

Best to you and your family!

Dr. Lynch

Hello I was curious if I could give some to my very active 3 year old son, who dislikes water. If yes, what would be an appropriate amount? Thank you

Hi Jennie -

You can use Clark's Rule to calculate how much you can give your son. This rule can be used from age 2 upwards.

Child's dosage = (child's weight in lbs / 150 lbs) x adult dosage.

The average weight of a 3-year-old is around 14 kg or 30 lbs. If this is true for your son, then it would look like this:

30 / 150 = 0.2 x 6.36 g = 1.27 g

This works out to 1/5th of a scoop.

Make sure to weigh your son so you have an accurate dosage.

Hope that helps :)

Can this be taken in pregnancy in addition to optimal magnesium, fish oil and prenatals you sell?

Hi Chrissy -

Yep.

That said, I don't think you need to take Optimal Magnesium in addition to the Optimal Electrolyte as there is 125 mg of magnesium in the electrolyte. If you have 2 servings of electrolytes a day, that's 250 mg of magnesium.

If you need more magnesium, you may certainly take Optimal Magnesium and before bed would be best.

Is hot water ok to mix the electrolights into? for example herbal tea?

Hi Rhonda -

You can but it will ruin some of the ingredients like the creatine, taurine and ATP. It will not hurt the potassium, salt or magnesium.

Is this safe for children?

Hi Daniela -

Absolutely - it's fantastic.

Kids are naturally adverse to drinking and staying hydrated is a big problem. They are 'too busy' to drink water.

Highly recommend using Optimal Electrolyte for them.

Upon waking is a great time as it turns 'on' their brain as we are all dehydrated when we wake up.

Hi Dr. Lynch I've been taking Optimal electrolytes for several years and love it, but my recent blood work is indicating low potassium 3.8 and high sodium level 145 as well as B9>15.0 and B12 792. Lately, after playing golf I am having more cramps mainly in my inner thighs. In addition to the electrolytes, I am taking magnesium, methyl B12 with L Methyl-folate, Glutathione Plus, Homocysteine Nutrients and fish oil. I'm suspecting the water pill I'v taken for several years along with a couple other meds for high blood pressure could be contributing to the low potassium. I don't see that you sell the potassium powder any longer is the something else I might try or increase to help. Thanks in advance Tim

Hi Tim -

You're right on. The water pill is no doubt doing this.

Consider:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: have a few servings a day. I usually put 2 scoops in my water bottle and then have two of them when I'm working hard. For you, I'd take 1 serving prior to playing golf and then put another 2 servings in your water bottle and sip it while you're on the course.
  • Pre-Workout Nutrients: thirty minutes to one hour before you go play golf or any sport, drink 1 serving of this. This will help with healthy muscle performance, endurance and recovery.* This also supports healthy blood pressure so monitor that. You will feel some tingling around your ears and skin and that's a normal response to the beta alanine.

I'd like you to work with a health professional to see if you can get your BP down to where you can get off those diuretics. Consider working with ElizmaLambert.com -

Hi! My father in law recently had triple by pass surgery. He has been drinking your electrolytes, but his kidney function isn’t the greatest. His creatine is high so I’m wondering if he should stop taking this since it contains creatine? He is also low on iron, but our wonderful healthcare system doesn’t seem to be getting the ball rolling on anything quickly. He took 1/2 a tablet of your methylfolate and b12 today. I know my mother in law is wondering about giving him iron and I was wondering if your optimal iron would be a good fit. She is worried about the extra ingredients in it, but I can only imagine they help absorption which would benefit him. Thank you for any feedback you can give .

Hi Steph -

Just to clarify, creatine (supplement) is not the same as creatinine (kidney marker).

If your father-in-law's creatinine levels are high and his eGFR is low, then he would need some kidney circulation support.

If only his creatinine is high and he's training a lot, then this marker may be normal for him.

If he is low in iron then Optimal Iron would be good for him. The extra ingredients are there to amply iron absorption and are not in very high amounts.

Hello Dr. Lynch! What happens when one drinks electrolytes during the day if not exercising those days? You recommended your electrolytes to me .. I also enjoy added electrolytes to my water and drinking throughout the day because it helps me Drink more water with a better flavor. I do hot yoga a few times a week, so I know it will be helpful on those days. But what about the days where I am just working/around the house drinking electrolytes? Does it have more of a negative effect? Ty! Meghan

Hi Meghan -

We need electrolytes every day regardless if exercising or not.

We dehydrate from the environment, food choices, drinks, peeing and sweating to name a few.

Enjoy them on a daily basis and a couple times a day as needed.

I already had three servings today. I was working hard on my ranch yesterday and I still feel I need more support despite sitting at a desk today.

For hot yoga, consider adding 1/4 tsp of additional table salt from your kitchen when sweating so much. If not sweating so much, the Optimal Electrolyte is perfect as is.

Enjoy the Optimal Electrolyte daily and benefit from them ;)

I really enjoy mixing Orange with Berry. It gives a very nice flavor. You can do 1/2 a scoop each if you like.

I have recently purchased the unflavoured Optimal Electrolyte and note the magnesium is in the form of magnesium malate. From my past reading about different forms of magnesium, magnesium malate is on the lower spectrum of absorbability. Why did you opt to use this form and not another form? KInd regards,..Livia

Hi Livia -

Magnesium malate is an exceptional form of magnesium.

Magnesium Oxide and Magnesium Carbonate are inferior forms.

We have used magnesium malate for over a decade with success.

Curious if there’s any idea why creatinine would be high on a blood test, and what supplements to take to help it

Hi Jamie -

High creatinine (a waste product) on a blood test is a marker for how well your kidneys are working.

Just to confirm, it is NOT the same as creatine (made by your body to supply energy to your muscles) in Optimal Electrolyte.

If you have high creatinine levels you may need some kidney support. Definitely work with your healthcare provider on this. They will likely want to retest in a few months to determine whether it was just a point in time when your kidneys may have been a bit overworked, or whether it's persisting.

The best thing you could do is not stress your kidneys too much, which may mean:

  • Avoiding alcohol
  • Address high blood pressure if relevant
  • Address stress if stress is causing high blood pressure
  • Address high blood sugar if relevant

Why do you use Himalayan salt? It is reported as toxic.

Hi Debra -

As stated on the product page, we third party test each ingredient for purity and label claims.

The supplement industry is rife with inaccurate statements made by competitors in order to justify why they use one ingredient and not another.

Would I pick an ingredient that's toxic given my background and expertise in environmental medicine? Absolutely not.

Himalayan salt that we use is very clean and I chose it for that reason.

It's also not from the sea so there is going to be way less microplastics compared to sea salt. Otherwise I would have used sea salt.

It shows not to drink it before bed - what is the rationale? Why sip, hold, then swallow??

Hi P -

The ATP in it before bed provides direct healthy energy.* It would prevent most people from sleeping.

Sip, hold and then swallow - that I am going to remove. It's not needed.

That does allow one to absorb the ATP better and feel the effects faster than if swallowing. One feels a healthy, clear head right away when drinking Optimal Electrolyte especially when drinking it first thing in the morning upon waking up.*

Love the Electrolytes! Wondering if there is something in it that can cause heart palpitations and higher heart rate temporarily? Experiencing this sometimes after drinking it. Thanks?

Hi Brooklyn -

That is likely the niacin.

Niacin is known to support healthy blood pressure as is potassium.

A few things that you can try:

  • drink it more slowly over time vs all at once
  • use 1/2 a scoop vs a full scoop

I've read recently about a number of electrolyte drinks being contaminated with fluorine/PFAS - is that something you test for in your products?

Hi Leslie -

I have not heard this.

We have not tested for this compound. I'm assuming that this contamination is more found in the liquid electrolyte drinks vs the powder as that is an odd compound to be found in electrolytes.

We third party test all our raw materials and third party test the finished products as well.

Thank you for being incredible and answering my low homocysteine questions. Me and my family take a lot of your supplements. Last question on low homocysteine - could the niacine and taurine in this help the low homocysteine or make it worse? I have been taking the glutathione on and off so will do it everyday now! Thank you again!!

Hi Ivy -

Niacin or taurine won't affect homocysteine that much.

When taking glutathione, you should feel good all the time.

If you ever start experiencing headaches, irritability, then you're taking too much. Adjust as needed.

I am currently using Optimal Electrolyte, Histamine Digest and Probiota HistaminX and just ordered HistaminX to treat MCAS. (I have fairly active histamine intolerence with 7+ ER visits this year. I do think your products are helping me calm and regain health). I also have a methylation report from MTHFRDoctors.com and from this I'm trying to line up my test results to your Dirty Genes book and workbook. It looks like MTHRFA*372C I have two mutations, MTHFR A1298C I have two mutations, MTHFR C677T I have no mutations. There are many other MTHFR testings listed but I'm not sure which to look at. What test to you recommend that will line up with your workbook so I may be able to follow along myself? I have COMT mutations and DAO mutations as well. I would love to know which product to add to help with my gene mutations to enable methylation. I am aware you don't do consultations but do you have anyone you recommend I could wade through my information? Also, do you offer large order discounts if I'm taking 5+ products on a regular daily basis? Thank you for all your work and support for those struggling with health issues due to methylation and histamines!! I am 66 and beginning to see my children reflecting histamnine problems, as well as grandchildren. Anything I can learn and implement will also help them. I appreciate any help you may offer. Julie VonGunten 260-413-4861

Hi Julie -

I'm stepping in for Dr. Lynch to help answer the influx of questions we're receiving.

Optimal Electrolyte, Histamine Digest, Probiotica HistaminX, and HistaminX are great supplements to support MCAS. Keep going with these.

I would recommend doing an OAT (Organic Acid Test) which can provide information on some genetic expressions such as MTHFR, COMT, and others, depending on the laboratory used. You should also work with a practitioner who understands how to interpret these results accurately.

A blood methylation panel may also be useful.

If your children are also showing histamine-type symptoms, it does seem like there is a strong genetic component.

Is it normal to get extreme dry mouth after drinking this for two days, as well as a sore throat (like a detox sort of symptom)?

Hi Jenna -

I'm not sure I'd call that a detox symptom.

Consider:

  • Make a glass of Optimal Electrolyte with Filtered water - do not use tap water.
  • sip a few swallows of filtered water after drinking the electrolyte to rinse your mouth
  • drink 30 minutes before OR after eating - do not drink with meals
  • have more - drink a 1-3 servings a day. You may be significantly dehydrated and this is truly supporting healthy hydration for you and getting water inside your cells
  • if you're sweating a lot, add 1/4 tsp of additional salt from your kitchen (this adds about 500 mg of sodium). If you're not sweating, do not add it. If you're eating sufficient salt in your diet, do not add extra.

Keep me posted if this resolves it.

Hey! Silly questions... Does the "unflavored" flavor actually have no taste at all? I have a picky child who loves to drink only water, but if he tastes anything off he will probably refuse to drink it. Thank you!

Hi Kylie -

The unflavored does have a slight taste to it and a slight fizz of carbonation.

If I were to describe it would be a slightly salty selzer.

I cannot imagine a kid would refuse any of our flavored ones - my favorite is Orange and my boys love Berry the most.

I guess they exist :)

Most times I take it and don’t feel anything unusual. But a couple of days ago I took half a scoop with about 6 oz of water about mid morning and it made me feel agitated. Any idea why that would be? Thanks

Hi Andrea -

It is likely because you may have had sufficient energy already prior to drinking a serving of Optimal Electrolyte - or you drank it too fast?

My recommendations:

  • drink one serving upon waking in the morning to support healthy energy
  • drink one serving over a period of time - do not chug it
  • drink it away from food
  • have another serving when you are working out, exercising, in a sauna or working in the garden or sitting at your desk at work and needing to hydrate over time

how much salt do I need to add to this if I'm exercising? Also, I always thought that a rehydration solution needed some kind of sugar to get into your cells. is this not true? Im seeing all of these elytes without any sugar.

Hi Lisette -

Sugar does support insulin secretion to help pump electrolytes into cells - that's true.

We use PeakATP which supports healthy pumping of electrolytes into the cells - and I suspect it does a far better job in doing so as over 20% of our body's ATP is used to just pump potassium and magnesium inside cells - and we use it directly. Sugar is glucose which goes into the Kreb cycle to help feed into the mitochondria to make ATP. We bypass all of that.

If exercising and sweating a lot, I'd consider adding another 1/4 tsp of salt which is about 500 mg of sodium.

If exercising and not sweating much, you do not need to add salt.

Can this be taken if one has low stomach acid? Should it be an hour away from food in either direction, like before or after eating? Why was the potassium changed to bicarbonate from citrate?

Hi Kayla -

Good questions.

It is ideal to take Optimal Electrolyte from food 30 minutes or so.

I changed the potassium to bicarbonate in order to support buffering the body's acidic pH during exercise or during an inflammatory process as inflammation is very acidic.

Optimal Electrolyte can be used by people with low stomach acid. They especially need to follow my recommendations on the suggested use: sip slowly over a period of time, hold and then swallow.

Hi Dr. Lynch! I appreciate your time and the helpful information you give by answering our questions. I had a time period of health challenges(post car accident/concussion, stress from loss, grief) Symptoms were food sensitivities, dizziness/vertigo, light sensitivities, emf sensitivities, especially Bluetooth. I am so blessed to be doing much better now. But I still struggle with the bluetooth sensitivity and sometimes wireless as well. I think I remember hearing you say you've had sensitivities to that in the past. Just looking to continue to boost health from ground up & healthy stress response. I have been taking 1/2 a glutathione lozenge when I wake up along with sipping 1/2 scoop electrolytes mixed with the vitamin c plus powder. Then a while later a good breakfast (eggs & veggies) I take the prenatal mf with collagen (about a third of the package)every morning. the other 1/2 of the glutathione plus lozenge, 1 pqq, 1 optimal magnesium( thought about switching this to the magnesium chewable), one fish oil. I've been adding in another glutathione plus lozenge during the day(not sure how to know how much I need?) and another serving of electrolytes. I added the gallbladder nutrients (tended to right shoulder pain(that is gone now!) & constipation. I am doing 2 at lunch and 2 at dinner. I take another fish oil after dinner and a probiota 12. I did probiota histaminx for quite a while and dao to help with histamine issues. Your products really helped me with that! Stopped those and switched to probiota 12. Didn't know if the constipation came from too little histamine in the gut after a while?? I am taking the liver nutrients, optimal magnesium, and ashwagandha at bed time. Sleeping good, I do wake up to pee one time a lot of nights. What do you think?? I would like to support my body and brain the best I can overall. We do shut wifi off most of the time in our home. We've went back to hardwired computers. tv's. But as you know it's everywhere and I'd like to be stronger and supported. Thanks a bunch!

Hi Kaycie -

You're doing awesome - impressive!

Happy that you're improving so much.

As you said, it's always work identifying how we can continue improving and very satisfying when you do identify an area and resolve it ;)

If you're experiencing constipation, then I suspect you may be taking too much Histamine Digest or too much probiotic. Consider reducing the amount taken or the frequency taken or both.

Definitely continue using the Gallbladder Nutrients and you may be do best with 4 capsules before dinner vs 2 and 2.

Waking up to pee one time is pretty good. That said, you can try taking Adrenal Cortex with a protein based breakfast and seeing if that same evening you don't pee at night. This really works for me. I also notice that when I support my testosterone levels (I've been testing Testosterone Nutrients for about a year) and currently it's in production), I don't wake up to pee often and I sleep really well.

In the morning, you may want to switch from taking a Glutathione Plus Lozenge to 1/2 to 1 lozenge of Brain Nutrients. I've been doing this and it's quite a bit better for me - and my boys like it better, too.

You may just pause the Glutathione Plus for the Brain Nutrients and see how you go - taking it upon waking and then again later in the day as needed.

Keep an eye on your estrogen levels and symptoms. If estrogen is high (blood clots, PMS, increased histamine intolerance) then you will be more EMF sensitive. If this is the case, consider adding in DIM+I3C to support healthy estrogen levels from around day 8 to day 16 or so of your cycle.*

Hi there I am interested in the optimal electrolyte product for my 11yo son who has recently been diagnosed with dravet syndrome. He has severe nocturnal seizures, high histamine and C677T MTHFR. Any suggestions or recommendations using this product please? Kindly Kate

Hi Kate -

I recommend working with a health professional who is integrative and naturopathic in scope. Please ask my team for a referral list.

Using Optimal Electrolyte, I'd start with a small amount say 1/4 scoop during the day when he is in your watch.

The higher potassium to sodium ratio is likely supportive for him as he has difficulty with sodium channels.

It seems that he should do better with higher potassium levels than sodium but I am not an expert here.

To support healthy histamine levels, consider 1 capsule of Histamine Nutrients.

In the morning, upon waking, consider:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1/4 serving in 1/2 cup of filtered water or so to start. He likely will be fine with 1 full serving but it's best to start low and monitor.
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/4 to 1 lozenge

After dinner:

  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule

I have slow COMT so many times I respond poorly or opposite to supplement’s or meds. I felt edgy and tired when I tried the electrolyte’s. Is this unusual? Is there anything else you would recommend? My dopamine has tested rock bottom as well. Not sure if this factor’s in. Thank you.

Hi Deanna -

I suspect it's a couple things:

  • Always take the Optimal Electrolyte away from food by about an hour ideally.
  • Sip the electrolyte over a period of time - say 20 minutes or so
  • consider 1/2 the serving size

The ATP is quite energizing and if you drink that too quickly, with food or too much of it, it can make you feel edgy and tired for various reasons.

Try drinking 1/2 serving immediately upon waking up in the morning and sipping it over 15 minutes or so as you go about taking a shower, etc.

Additionally, I'd consider:

  • Glutathione Plus lozenge: take 1/2 lozenge upon waking in the morning to support healthy mitochondria.* ATP side effects of fatigue are usually due to low glutathione and antioxidant levels.
  • Acetyl-L-Carnitine: consider 1 capsule upon waking to support healthy mitochondria and energy utilization.*
  • Salt: add 1/4 tsp of salt to the electrolyte to support healthy sodium levels. I suspect you're lower cortisol which is likely related to lower sodium levels. 1/4 tsp salt provides an additional 500 mg or so of sodium.

For low dopamine, I'm on the fence between Adrenal Cortex or Dopamine Nutrients.

If your cortisol is LOW in the morning, then consider supporting healthy adrenals with Adrenal Cortex in the morning with breakfast.* Healthy cortisol levels support healthy dopamine levels.*
If your cortisol is fine, then consider Dopamine Nutrients and take 1 capsule with a protein-based breakfast to support healthy dopamine levels.*

How do you know if your cortisol is low is by seeing if any or most of these resonate with you:

  • peeing frequently at night
  • really tired in the morning
  • waking up quite early in the morning due to low blood sugar
  • weight loss
  • salt cravings
  • general muscle pain
  • less able to handle stressful situations when you're tired
  • dizzy upon standing up from sitting or laying down
  • peeing frequently during the day
  • more reactive to bug bites and histamine
  • low blood pressure

If your cortisol is high, these are potential signs and symptoms:

  • high blood pressure
  • weight gain especially gut, face
  • acne
  • increased irritability
  • low libido

If your cortisol is high, then consider:

  • Phosphatidyl Serine: take 1 capsule with breakfast and 1 with dinner to support healthy cortisol levels.*
  • Stress Nutrients: take 1-3 capsules with breakfast to support a healthy response to stress.*

Dr. Lynch, I LOVE these electrolytes! I've tried them all and this brand works. I've suffered for a few years (during late perimenopause) with headaches and muscle pain...tension like headaches that feel like a band around my head. This has helped me. Finally! I feel like I need more than one serving...especially after a hot day working in the yard or a workout. My headaches also come after a day working in the yard. Can i use 2-3 servings a day? or more? I often get lightheaded when outside working. Can you suggest any other supplements to go along with the electrolytes to help recover from heat/sweating? I really feel it after a day outside! Thank you!

Hi Sarah -

Awesome to hear you are experiencing benefit! :)

Absolutely.

I use the Optimal Electrolyte as needed.

Some days I use only 1 serving and other days I'll use even 6 or so when I'm working on the ranch and sweating heavily and working really hard.

If you're sweating heavily, add a 1/4 tsp of salt per serving to your electrolyte mix.

1/4 tsp of salt adds 575 mg of sodium and 1/2 tsp adds about 1,150 mg of sodium

If you're working hard in the garden or with workout, I highly recommend a serving of Pre-Workout Nutrients. Take 1 serving before your workout or before you're gardening.

I'll take a serving of Pre-Workout Nutrients before I start a big day on the ranch and it helps keep me going - and the next day I feel great - no soreness.

Hello, just wondering if this product is corn free? I have a pretty severe corn allergy so can’t have even a tiny amount of it.

Hello Betty,

There are no materials directly derived from corn used in the electrolyte formulations. However, there are components used with in the processing of the orange and lemon nature flavor materials (inactive ingredients), such as maltodextrin and food starch. In some case these components in these materials may be derived from common materials such as corn, rice or potato. Due to the highly processed nature there are no proteins from starting materials left in the final flavor materials.

Why do I get loose stools whenever I drink my electrolytes?

Hi Dawn -

I suspect you're drinking them too quickly, taking them with meals or your stomach acid is too low.

Consider:

  • drinking 1/2 a scoop and slowly sipping it over a period of 10 minutes or so
  • drink away from meals
  • don't use ice water but rather room temperature water as cold water hurts stomach acid and digestion

Consider also:

  • Digestive Enzymes: take 1-2 capsules with meals to support healthy protein, carbs and fat absorption.*

I suspect you need additional digestive support.

Hi, I was told by a geneticist that with rs4680, rs4633, and rs165599 (all +/+) I should never supplement electrolytes because my body can't clear them fast enough and it can cause heart rhythm issues and so on, but you have electrolyte support for COMT. I do notice that you have a much lower dose of sodium and higher of both potassium and magnesium than other brands of electrolytes. I am confused as to how to supplement on a low carb diet where electrolytes are commonly needed, but where my particular genetic situation could alter that, thanks.

Hi Art -

I'm sorry you received such horrible information.

One cannot base supplement recommendations like this based on SNPs alone - not these one.

A low carb diet necessitates higher sodium intake.

It is best to combine additional salt from your own kitchen to Optimal Electrolyte. I'd add another 1/4 teaspoon of salt which is 575 mg of additional sodium.

High salt low potassium low magnesium based electrolytes are problematic as they may further drive low potassium levels which do cause heart issues.

Monitor your blood pressure. If your blood pressure starts climbing, back off on the salt.

My 99 year old grandma is in a hospice facility that is willing to give her kumbucha, but not electrolytes. Would the electrolytes still be effective if I just added it to her home-made kumbucha ahead of time vs adding 1 scoop at the time they give her her kumbucha? Thank you for any advice

Hi Stacy -

Kombucha is not really an electrolyte - and it can really increase histamine levels making your grandma very irritated, headaches, inability to sleep and itchy.

Kombucha is great if sipped and used say an ounce or two at a time during the day to support digestion with a meal.

It should never be used in the evening or excessively.

I recommend 1/2 scoop of Optimal Electrolyte for her in filtered water (not chlorinated). She can sip this in the morning upon waking. She will love how she feels after sipping this over a few minutes.

So I find that I am drinking other glasses of water (without the supplement added) to erase the dry mouth feeling. I have checked the ratio that is required of water to powder and it is correct. It seems contradictory to be drinking other water when I am try to optimize the electrolytes that my body will absorb. Any reason why I have a dry mouth? I cannot locate any other questions regarding this point. Thanks Annie

Hi Annie -

The only thing I can suspect is the sodium doing this but I have not heard this before. I sip the electrolytes all the time and I don't experience a dry mouth.

How much taurine is in the mix? I take a 1000mg tablet of taurine with magnesium daily.

Hi Lisa -

It's a proprietary blend.

What I can say is the amount you're taking along with the Optimal Electrolyte is safe to do - absolutely no issues.

I can also say that a tablet of Taurine is likely not very well absorbed. You should use capsules not tablets unless the are lozenges or chewables.

We are often warned of the dangers of taking antacids and how it can disrupt our production of Hydrochloric Acid. Isn't potassium bicarbonate considered an antacid? Can this cause a problem if taken every day? Also, I am curious as to why "The FDA limits over-the-counter potassium supplements to 100 milligrams per dose. For potassium bicarbonate, the maximum daily dosage is 200 milliequivalents (mEq) of bicarbonate ion if you are under 60 years old and 100 mEq if you’re older than age 60 years." Since 1 scoop contains 500 mg I am hoping you can you shed some light on this. Thank you! Jan

Hi Jan -

Bicarbonates do neutralize stomach acid yes.

That said, you should be using Optimal Electrolyte away from meals - and one should not drink during meals regardless as that dilutes stomach acid.

The stomach acid will rebound as it naturally does when faced with something that lowers it like milk, fat or heavy meals or bicarbonates.

The FDA made the max dosage of potassium of 99 mg in capsules only.

From the FDA:
"Potassium bicarbonate (or carbonate when used as a component of an effervescent preparation); maximum daily dosage limit 200 mEq. of bicarbonate ion for persons up to 60 years old and 100 mEq. of bicarbonate ion for persons 60 years or older."
https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/CFRSearch.cfm?fr=331.11&SearchTerm=potassium%20bicarbonate

Math: http://www.nafwa.org/convert2.php

Why such high levels of niacin? Is there anyone who should be concerned about that? Pregnant mama with 3 & 5yo who love to steal my drinks!

Hi Sarah -

Niacin is fine at this level. It is not high.

It's there to support healthy NAD levels which are essential for healthy mitochondrial function.

Your kids can steal your Optimal Electrolytes :) and you're welcome to use them as well and you should! Hydration is key for a healthy pregnancy!

Congratulations on #3 :)

I have three boys...full house! Well - was - and is again now that two are back from college for the summer.

If someone is playing tennis for 2 hours how would someone take this to make sure they are staying Hydrated for the full 2-hour session? Why can't we chug the 8 Ounces? Why do you recommend we hold in our mouth?

Hi Marc -

I recommend the holding of Optimal Electrolyte a bit for those who are not exercising.

Many people sit at a desk or are driving or just doing simple things while drinking electrolytes.

If you're exercising, by all means, chug away.

If you are sweating a lot, add a pinch or two in addition to your Optimal Electrolyte.

I also recommend drinking a serving of Pre-Workout Nutrients prior to your tennis workout.

You'll experience a healthy performance that keeps you going - and - even better - your post workout recovery will be significantly better as it is designed to support healthy energy and blood flow.

You'll be quite impressed with the combination of Pre-Workout Nutrients and Optimal Electrolyte!
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/pre-workout-nutrients

You can drink the full serving of Pre-Workout Nutrients before your tennis session. I sometimes mix it up and drink 1/2 before my session and drink the other 1/2 mixed with Optimal Electrolyte and a pinch of salt for during the workout.

This question is actually about your Optimal Vitamin C Plus. It is constipating me. Everyone else has the opposite issue. Why might this be? And is there an alternative form of Vit C that would be better tolerated, like camu camu?

Hi Kaela -

That is interesting.

Make sure you are drinking it away from food - between meals and not with meals.

You may want to add more filtered water per cup as well.

In terms of another vitamin C, we have Liposomal Vitamin C
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/liposomal-vitamin-c

For gut health support, I'd consider supporting healthy bowel movements by taking 2 capsules of Gallbladder Nutrients before dinner.* Do this amount for a couple days. If you experience healthy bowel movements at 2 capsules before dinner, great. If not yet easy enough to pass, then consider taking the full serving size of 2 capsules before lunch and 2 before dinner OR take all 4 capsules before dinner to support a healthy, easy to pass bowel movement.*

I suspect your liver and gallbladder need additional support which is why this recommendation.

Finding another type of vitamin C is not the answer really. It's supporting your gut health as it appears to need some love.

So it says 1 scoop per 8 oz water. If water bottle is 16 oz, should you use 2 scoops and sip throught the day? Also, how to use in conjunction with colonoscopy? Can we drink the unflavored day before procedure while taking the prep solution to avoid dehydration?

Hi R -

You got it.

That's what I usually do.

I usually put 2 scoops or 1.5 scoops in a tall glass then go to my office and work. It takes me about 2 hours or more to finish as I sip it periodically.

Yes, you can drink the Unflavored electrolytes prior to a colonoscopy. Good call.

I just turned 50 so I need to get myself scheduled. I'll be sure to drink some Optimal Electrolyte :)

Hi I am new here and new to using electrolytes. I am in chapter 3 of your book and thought i would start with the electrolytes. I am interested in knowing the ingredients of the "Natural Flavors." I first heard the negative remarks on this ingredient by food babe years ago and more recently a biologist that is in the lime light now his take on "Natural Flavors is very discusting. I would like your input on this. Thank you.

Hi Michele -

I have answered this important question in some detail for others. Please find that response.

In short, our natural flavors are derived from fermentation, do not have MSG and are from fruit.

It's a shame that the food industry expands the definition of 'natural' so much because it gives companies like ours a bad rap when we truly do work on providing quality flavors.

Hi! Just curious if taking separate magnesium (bisglycinate) and magnesium in your Vit c blend, is a concern combined with the mg in your electrolytes? In terms of mg amount per day.

Hi Kaela -

If you feel great, great.

If you find yourself sitting on the toilet too often, then you are taking too much and need to make some adjustments.

We use a magnesium that is very well absorbed so it should be well tolerated and not cause you any grief.

If it does, simply space them out further apart or reduce a bit.

I've been trying to get more potassium through electrolytes but a support group I follow for migraines says it's not good to get potassium through electrolyte powders because it ends up in the blood. I'm confused. Is it better to get potassium through food? I prefer your electrolytes! Thanks!

Hi Catherine -

The design of Optimal Electrolyte is to get potassium into the cell - that's the whole point of my formulation ;)

I'd sip it.

I'd also consider Histamine Digest during meals or drinking alcohol as histamine is a trigger for migraines and Histamine Digest supports healthy histamine levels.*

People are getting great results with using Brain Nutrients - 1/2 to 1 lozenge - right before the onset of a headache. It appears to support healthy blood flow if used right at the first signs.*

Low serotonin is also a trigger for migraines and high serotonin is how the body responds to the low serotonin which causes blood flow issues and thus a migraine.

If you're falling asleep but not staying asleep, have low mood at times and headaches often, these are all low serotonin and consider Serotonin Nutrients as needed to support healthy serotonin levels.

My potassium level ranges between 4.1 & 4.6…. Can this raise my potassium to a too high of a level? Other hydration drinks make me urinate so much, I don’t feel like I’m getting hydrated.

Hi Rhonda -

Potassium is tightly regulated.

If potassium is high in your blood it may also mean that it's not getting into your cells which is where it needs to be.

Hydration drinks often do not hydrate for various reasons.

High sodium electrolytes can increase sodium levels too much to the point that people pee out potassium making themselves more dehydrated.

I'd have a serving or two of Optimal Electrolyte throughout the day. Sip it if just sitting around the house. If exercising hard, you are welcome to drink it much faster.

Hi Dr Ben, I took a food sensitive test with 5strands(hair) . I’m unsure about the reliability of this test, but the report shows the following: Niacin and Potassium : Your body is showing signs of a moderate inability to absorb these nutrients. Chloride: Your body is experiencing a severe inability to absorb these nutrients and you may even be experiencing physical symptoms from this. I really want to get the optimal electrolyte. Given these results, since it contains these ingredients. Do you think it would be okay for me to take it? Thank you so much for your guidance :)

Hi Viviana -

I am not sure the validity of that test, either.

That said, Optimal Electrolyte is a very safe and supportive healthy hydration supplement.*

I recommend sipping 1 serving in the morning upon waking and having another serving during or after exercise to support healthy performance and energy - and hydration.*

What are your thoughts on potassium with kidney damage? Need more or less? Trying to help with afib by making sure we are hydrated with correct electrolytes.

Hi Jenny -

Kidney damage is tricky with electrolytes and should be monitored by your healthcare professional.

The kidneys typically remove excess potassium themselves but when damaged, this is reduced contributing to high levels of potassium.

I'd work with your doctor and see what they say about this.

Hi Paula -

Please ask my team to send you a scoop. It depends on which flavor how many grams you need.

It ranges from essentially a teaspoon to a heaping teaspoon.

You can take as many times during the day as you need. I range from 1 to 4 a day depending on my activity level and sun exposure.

If we're currently sensitive or have an intolerance to sulfur should we avoid the electrolytes because of the taurine in it? Or is the amount small enough that it shouldn't be an issue? This sensitivity developed when I started having histamine and oxalate issues. Thanks, Dr. Lynch.

Hi Susan -

Taurine actually supports sulfur metabolism.

I'd add in Gallbladder Nutrients - 2 capsules before dinner - to support healthy histamine and oxalate metabolism.* This is often overlooked. You likely will experience also healthy sleep, healthy mood, healthy digestion and bowel movements, too ;)

Sip the electrolytes - mix in filtered water and then sip over time. They work best when sipped - not chugged.

Hi! Do the natural flavors in the Berry flavor contain cherry? We are allergic to cherry. Thanks!

Hi Kim -

Yes, we do have natural black cherry in there.

What I can say when it comes to flavor, I highly suspect there are no remaining proteins from the black cherry in the flavor after processing. It is the proteins which cause the allergies to things.

I highly recommend the Orange and the Lemonade.

I really love the Orange now - but the Lemonade is also pretty stellar :)

Is creatine ok to take if you have histamine intolerance? I didn't think it was.

Hi Susan -

Absolutely.

It's quite beneficial actually.

Optimal Electrolyte supports healthy histamine levels by a variety of ways:

  • supports healthy hydration which is important for diluting the histamine concentration.*
  • supports healthy blood flow which reduces the stimulation of histamine production and histamine release.*
  • supports methylation indirectly and conserves SAMe for breaking down histamine. It does this by providing a solid amount of creatine. Creatine requires a lot of SAMe when being made and SAMe is needed to break down histamine.

Are these electrolytes recommended for someone with POTS? I’ve used other brands but they caused swelling and water retention.

Hi Nikole -

Yes. They are preferred actually.

It's important to have sufficient potassium, magnesium and ATP to support healthy electrolyte levels - and water - inside your cells.

What's happening with the other high salt electrolytes is they are keeping the salt in your blood and it's not getting inside your cells.

You also want to use Himalayan salt as it is far superior than sodium chloride or sea salt.

You may want to add a pinch of additional Himalayan salt to our electrolyte but try first as it is.

Additionally, take 1 capsule of Adrenal Cortex with your high protein-based breakfast.

Low aldosterone is associated with POTS and aldosterone is supported by healthy adrenal glands.* Adrenal Cortex supports healthy adrenal function.* Take Adrenal Cortex with breakfast only on days you feel you're really tired, woke up a few times during the night to pee and you feel you need healthy energy levels.* Skip it on days where you slept well and have healthy energy levels.

Support a healthy response to emotional and physical stressors by taking 3 capsules of Stress Nutrients with breakfast.* Take these daily especially for at least 1 to 2 months or until you feel a healthy response to stress.*

This combination will be supportive of healthy blood pressure and blood volume.*

Is it safe to take 500mg of potassium bicarbonate? I thought the max daily dose was 99mg.

Chloe -

It is very safe.

Potassium: 200 mEq = 7,800 mg and 100 mEq = 3,900 mg

Do you plan to release an OE that has Ca (maybe Ca malate)?

Hi Kathleen -

Calcium is best used with vitamin K2.

K2 is best used with food and so is calcium.

So - no I do not intend to make an electrolyte with calcium and K2.

As a formulator, one has to really focus on what are the main electrolytes people are deficient in and how are the best absorbed? That's Optimal Electrolyte.

Calcium is best obtained from food and by using the combination of Vitamin D3+K2.

It's not really a calcium deficiency as it is more a vitamin D3 and K2 deficiency as these support calcium reabsorption from the kidney and then deposit that calcium to the bones.

Hello, Dr Lynch! I love the electrolytes, they’ve been so helpful to replenish potassium and keep high blood pressure in check. I’ve noticed that electrolytes also clear the histamine reaction very quickly. I have old original formulation. Do you know what is the mechanism of action here would be? It really clears histamine reaction for us faster than antihistamine does and I love it, I’m just wondering why, is it creatine spearing the methylation or something else? Thank you so much!

Hi Daniela -

Thank you for sharing this.

The answer I believe is in your question.

Healthy blood pressure supports healthy blood flow.

If blood pressure is high, then your nitric oxide levels are low. Low nitric oxide leads to higher histamine release in order to compensate. High histamine supports blood flow in some tissues.

Thus, if supporting healthy blood flow by supporting healthy potassium levels, histamine doesn't have to be released as nitric oxide levels are healthy.*

"Histamine and nitric oxide (NO) are both vasodilator mediators that can influence blood flow rate at the start of reperfusion. Histamine can increase NO production in the endothelium, which can act as a vasodilator. However, histamine can also have pro-atherogenic effects, such as increasing the expression of adhesion molecules in vascular endothelial cells. This can increase leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions, which is an important event in the development of atherosclerosis"
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17478759/

What's crazy is I bet when you take your antihistamines, before you drank Optimal Electrolyte, you found your blood pressure going UP.

People aren't aware of this connection.

Doctors aren't either...

I'm working on making this connection known.

In health,

Can we use this with our 13 month old? If so, what is the recommendation?

Hi Lisa -

Yes you may.

I'd mix yourself a glass and give them a few sips as they desire.

This way they can self-regulate and it's not wasted.

I recommend waiting until June 1 to buy this - that is when we are releasing the latest formulation which is far superior to the current one.

Will all the Optimal Electrolyte formulas moving forward contain the creatine monohydrate? I'm asking because I tend to get stomach upset with that form that I don't get with creatine HCL. (I have Crohn's Disease though, which I suspect might have something to do with my sensitivity.)

Hi Michael -

We are using the creatine monohydrate yes - but it's not that much.

To support your gut, I highly recommend:

  • Optimal GI capsules: take 3 upon waking up in the morning before eating - and 3 before bed. This supports a healthy stomach and gut lining.*

  • Histamine Digest: take 1 capsule before bed to support healthy histamine levels in your gut.* Too much histamine in your gut leads to inflammation, pain and leaky gut.

  • ProBiota HistaminX: take 1 capsule after dinner to support a healthy histamine microbiome.*

With the electrolytes, sip them over time. Don't chug them. I typically sip mine over about 20 minutes or so. You'll see why after you take the first sip. ;) It just clears your head so fast and you don't need another sip for quite some time.

Hi! I tried the optimal electrolyte for energy but it ended up having the opposite effect on me. I ended up getting tired a few hours after taking it- where I was needing to take a nap. Do you know why that would be the case?

Hi Alyssa -

I do, yes.

It's why in about 2 months we are having an updated version come out.

The Glycine.

That is causing your sleepiness.

The Unflavored version does NOT have Glycine in it. So try this one.

We used the Glycine to soften the sweetness of the HydroPrime but it didn't work as intended. HydroPrime is just too darn sweet - so we are pulling it.

Glycine did soften the sweetness a bit - but it is at 500 mg which definitely contributes to sleepiness.

Again, the Unflavored does not have Glycine in it.

The new flavors coming out also will not have Glycine in them - nor HydroPrime.

I already have the new ones at my home - they are the best ones I've ever done.

This last lot - the worst ones I've ever done.

I 'forced' trying to use HydroPrime because the research is so good - but it ruins the product.

In health,

Can you put this in one bottle of 1 liter water and drinking it through the day? I'm breastfeeding and was told we need 3,8 liters a day, not sure if that's true, but I'm drinking 2 liters of water everyday and still got headace, constipation and tension muscle at night. I wonder it this might help?

Hi Anna -

Yes, that's a great idea.

I also recommend adding in Gallbladder Nutrients - take 2 before dinner. Headache and constipation can be associated with gallbladder and bile issues. Bile and your gallbladder got a big workout during pregnancy. Even if you do not have a gallbladder, Gallbladder Nutrients is supportive. This is because it supports healthy bile production and flow - which are associated with healthy bowel movements and healthy sleep.*

To support healthy breast milk flow and nutrient density, consider Optimal PC. You would take 1 capsule any time of day with food - it doesn't matter when.

90% of pregnant women (and likely breastfeeding women) are deficient in choline. While you are getting some choline in the Gallbladder Nutrients, research shows women really need way more to support healthy fetal development and brain development of their infants.

Congratulations on your little one! ;)

I have noticed your new Optimal Electrolyte formula and its new Peak ATP ingredient. I have concerns about this because, according to Robert Naviaux's Cell Danger Response, extracellular ATP is a danger signal that causes the mitochondria to go into a protective mode and shut down. This may therefore have the opposite effect to that intended in some people. I am interested to know whether this has been considered in the formulation of this product. I was actually happy with the old formulation.

Hi Nathan -

Great point. I'm familiar with Dr. Naviaux's work and his paper.

Extracellular ATP is due to the cells breaking apart from my understanding and exporting the ATP. It has been awhile since I read the paper.

We used to use the D-Ribose to support healthy ATP production. We stopped because the D-Ribose caused a drop in blood sugar in some people and headaches.

I'll talk with Robert about this and see what he says.

I have tested this formulation on many people with success.

The people who used to get headaches from the original formulation now do not.

I do not use the full 450 mg of PeakATP as the research studies show. I use far less in the electrolytes and Brain Nutrients. I do use the 450 mg in the Pre-Workout Nutrients.

I do find it best to use Optimal Electrolyte away from food, before, during and after exercise.

Can you explain the difference between creatine that's in the non-flavored and the HydroPrime blend in the flavored? I have MTHFR gene mutation and in the past I think you've recommended creatine. I drink Optimal Electrolyte daily, have for years and love it. I'm super curious on the difference and the best one for me. Thank you.

Hi Gina -

Honestly, the HydroPrime is a big let down.

It's too sweet, causes clumping and too thick.

We are pulling it out of all the electrolytes and our preworkout, too.

It's a great ingredient overall in terms of the science but man - it just sucks to work with.

Use the Optimal Electrolyte Unflavored for now as it has creatine and no HydroPrime.

In a couple months, all our electrolytes will have only creatine and no HydroPrime.

Hi Dr. Ben! Which version of unflavored electrolyte is actually the newest? Is it with or without ATP? With or without creatine? Here on the SH site, available as of today, the unflavored label shows both ATP and creatine included. On Fullscript, unflavored shows as out of stock, due late April, and includes neither ATP nor creatine. I'm hoping Fullscript is showing the newest version, coming soon, and they're just holding out for the new one. I'm hoping it won't have ATP or creatine. The ATP, creatine (and D-Ribose!) are too intense for me. I just seriously need the electrolyte replenishment hydration, without trying to jump start my energy. Additional energy components are too much for some of us who are most in need of electrolyte support. Maybe you'll make a version labeled Electrolyte Unflavored Sensitive? Or Electrolyte Simplified Sensitive, etc. Also, many thanks for not using stevia! Organic cane sugar would actually be great. Of course we can add our own real sugar. Too bad sugar has been targeted as evil, because in the small amount for an electrolyte product, seems like it would actually be helpful. Thanks for all you do!

Hi Barbara -

I hear you ;)

The newest version is the one with ATP and creatine.

The reason for the ATP and creatine are not to give you energy like that.

They are designed for ultimate hydration.

40% of your body's energy, at rest, is used to pump electrolytes inside your cells.

Our original version of Optimal Electrolyte used D-Ribose and Creatine. The D-Ribose was designed to support healthy ATP production. Now that ATP is available as a supplement, we switched.

In states of low ATP, muscles cramp.

No one talks about this.

I recommend sipping the Optimal Electrolyte Unflavored first thing in the morning when you wake up.

You'll enjoy it ;)

I hear you on all your points - and including the sugar.

I would much prefer using organic cane sugar as well over monk fruit. If I could just convince people of that :) I would do it.

Our new flavored versions are coming out in a couple months. They will no longer have the HydroPrime.

As much as I loved the research of that ingredient, it proved to be problematic despite all my prior testing. It causes clumps and is too sweet.

We are taking that out from the Optimal Electrolyte.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

I believe Dr Lynch notes in Dirty Genes & website that Niacin can reduce Blood Pressure (esp if already <90/60). So if one already has BP < 90/60, should they avoid this product due to it containing Niacin (as inositol hexanicotinate)? If so, is there an alternative product for electrolytes Dr. Lynch recommends without Niacin? TIA

Hi Sam -

The amount and form of niacin found in Optimal Electrolyte will not do this.

One will need higher amounts of niacin and in the form of nicotinic acid.

If one has low blood pressure, consuming electrolytes is even more important.

I definitely would add more table salt to your electrolytes. Say another 1/4 teaspoon which is about 575 mg of salt which is about 175 mg of sodium.

I would also consider Adrenal Cortex with breakfast to support healthy blood pressure.

I’ve been using these for about a month daily and it has helped greatly with foot cramps. Recently I’ve been experiencing some mild dizziness about 90 minutes after drinking this in the morning after eating a protein rich breakfast. I put this in 16 oz of water. Any thoughts if coincidence? Fyi I’m also taking the histamine probiotic in the morning and histamine nutrients at night for the past 4 months.

Hi Roxann -

Thanks for asking.

A few things can happen here.

Get a home blood pressure cuff and see what your blood pressure is. You want it no more than 120/80.

Also, histamine intolerance can lead to dizziness.

I'm wondering if you're eating a food that is increasing histamine and that's triggering your dizziness.

I also think you may be diluting your stomach acid and digestive abilities by drinking the electrolytes with too much water post meal. Let's move that.

We can do a few things:

  • drink your electrolyte upon waking with your probiotic - 30 minutes before eating. Do in 8 oz of water not 16 oz.
  • have your protein based breakfast.
  • see how you feel this way.
  • If you feel great, then the electrolyte and diluting stomach acid and enzymes after your meal was causing issues.

If no changes, then try this:

  • drink your electrolyte upon waking with your probiotic - 30 minutes before eating.
  • have your protein based breakfast.
  • take a capsule of Histamine Digest with the START of your meal
  • see if changes and you feel good.
  • if you feel good this way then you're eating a food that's high histamine and contributing to dizziness.

If still feeling dizzy, consider:

  • all the above but add more salt to your electrolytes in the morning upon waking.

Consider stopping the Histamine Nutrients before bed. Only take it if you feel you are not going to fall asleep well and need support for healthy onset of sleep.* Taking Histamine Nutrients too consistently may lead to feeling too tired in the morning.

Keep me posted.

Will you be bringing back the Optimal Electrolyte single serving packets? They were so perfect for travel!! [email protected]

Hi Tonya -

We love the single packets, too!

I have just reformulated the electrolytes so they do not clump or get sticky in stick packs. We had some issues where this happened in hot and humid climates.

Now that I've reformulated it, we now put them into a stability chamber inside the stick pack - and wait for the results.

I wish it was faster but we have to pass our in house quality controls first :)

That said, I'm confident we will have stick packs again. I simply want to be confident they will perform.

It seems most monk fruit sweeteners are mainly erythritol with a hint of monk fruit extract. Does the monk fruit in your electrolyte powder contain any erythritol? I wish it was real organic sugar instead, or not sweetener at all.
Thank you for your question! Our electrolytes include Monk fruit (Luo Han Guo) extract, and there is no erythritol in the product.

Hi Jillian -

This is non flushing niacin so you're good with this one.

Rosacea is commonly associated with inflammation and various nutrient deficiencies.

Consider:

  • Skin Nutrients: 3 capsules after a protein based breakfast to support healthy skin.* This has researched supportive ingredients that are known to support healthy skin like vitamins A, C, D, E, zinc, niacin and B5 to name a few. This uses non flushing niacin as well.
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule upon waking to support a healthy microbiome.*
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1-2 servings a day as needed
  • Digestive Enzymes: 1-2 capsules with each meal to support healthy digestion.*
  • Histamine Digest: some people report needing this to really support healthy skin especially if eating or drinking alcohol aggravates it.* Take 1 capsule with each meal that contains foods or drinks that are known to aggravate you.

Are these electrolytes for energy or hydration? I take walks everyday for 35 minutes and sweat a lot I've been having dry lips indicating mild dehydration I'm looking for something to take after my walks But will these make my heart beat faster? I don't drink coffee nor energy drinks because I don't like the feeling Feels like palpitations That's why I ask are these for hydrating or energy?

Hi Ann -

These electrolytes are for hydration - not energy.

That said, there is PeakATP used in the electrolyte to support the pumping of magnesium and potassium into the cells.

The added ATP may be giving you a sense of energy.

The faster heart rate may be associated with potassium and niacin which support healthy blood pressure.

If you're sweating a lot, add a 1/4 tsp of additional salt to the Optimal Electrolyte.

Check your blood pressure as well as it may be a bit low if heart is going too fast.
