Hydroxo B12 with Folinic Acid Dr. Lynch product Q&AUpdated 4 hours ago
Question | Answer |
How do I know if I should go with Brain Nutrients or Hydroxo B12 w/ Folinic Acid together with Basic B? The dosages are quite different. Heterozygous MTHFR A1298C and super slow COMT (homo V158M). Symptoms include anxiety and sometimes rumination, estrogen dominance. Tested low in B12. | The Brain Nutrients is more supportive of healthy neurotransmission than just the folate and B12.* Consider:

Hello, I wanted to ask if this would be okay to give to my 9 year old who has level 3 autism, non verbal. I've been reading up how important b12 and folinic acid is for them and how many of them actually need higher doses. I'd consider crushing this and putting in his applesauce? Many studies out there right now with Folinic acid and autism. Also would you recommend the probiota Bifidus strain only when starting probiotics for his gut health since many have gut issues and my son is sensitive with his belly and suffers from constipation so I'd like to get his gut feeling better even though he can't tell me what's wrong but I do believe some.of his meltdowns/aggression is related to his gut etc. Thank you | Yes you may but I think that Brain Nutrients may be better suited for him as it combines antioxidants along with the folinic acid and hydroxo B12. Consider crushing 1/4 tablet and putting into a bite of applesauce. Additionally, after observing how he is doing with Brain Nutrients for a few days, consider adding in Kids Optimal Focus 1/4 tablet to start. Read this fully: Constipation is associated with low levels of acetylcholine, which children with autism are known to have. Kids Optimal Focus supports healthy acetylcholine levels.* I would not use probiotics yet. Let's see how he does with the Brain Nutrients 1/4 tablet and Kids Optimal Focus. In fact, I'd actually consider using Kids Optimal Focus first at 1/4 tablet. Read the guide I linked for you all the way through so you're educated on how best to use it. I believe you'll see a dramatically happier and stable son ;) In health, |
Hi there! I'm wondering if it's possible that a 2.5 year old take this supplement. My son is suffering from a severe speech delay and I've read and heard that Folinic Acid combined with b12 has benefited children with very similar situations. He is in speech therapy and overall a very smart and happy child but the speech therapist is starting to suspect that he may have apraxia or something more severe than a common delay. Thank you! | I hear you and you're correct. Instead of this, I recommend something better for him. Consider:
Two of my sons were delayed in speech and now are totally fine straight A students. In health, |
Is a full tablet ok to give to a 11yr old? Hes homozygous COMT v158m. Hoping this helps. | Way too much likely. Also - don't give a supplement because a SNP was found. Give a supplement when there is a need. A SNP does not dictate need. Symptoms do. I'd consider more the Kids Multivitamin Chewable MF and start with 1 tablet after his protein based breakfast. This is more well rounded and foundational. In health, |
My son is 10 years old and has one copy of MTHFR. Our functional doctor said he is needs adeno or hydroxo b12 and folinic acid. He's low in b12. Can I give him this and cut the amount in half? Any suggestions on what he can take and how often? I wasn't sure about the kids MF multi with the high b vitamins. He also has language delays receptive and expressive if you have any advice for that as well. Thanks! | I do think the Kids Multivitamin Chewable MF at 1/2 to 1 chewable after his protein based breakfast would be supportive for him. This would provide the needed folate and B12 along with the other nutrients - and at 1/2 to 1 chewable, he's getting a good amount without it being too much. Additionally, consider:

Hello, I am trying to find a supplement that I am able to tolerate. I am currently not taking any. I am Heterozygous Mthfr C667T as well a slow comt. I had my B levels tested and most were good but for some reason B12 dropped to 375 over the course of a month. My homocysteine is 8.4. I have increased anxiety and insomnia, just can’t turn off my thoughts at night. Would the Hydroxo B12 and folicnic acid help with getting my levels of B12 up? I am sensitive to most supplements including Magnesium Glycinate. Thanks for your time Syna Prasse | Let's support you gently. Consider:
These are all very supportive and gentle supplements. You should notice improvements within a day. In health, |
Hello, Dr. Lynch, I have just learned about the connection between too-high folate supplementation and breast cancer, among others. I recently had a double mastectomy due to triple-negative breast cancer. I have a MTHFR gene mutation and also malabsorption syndrome. I have been taking two of your products for several years: Hydroxo B-12 with Folinic Acid, and B-Minus complex. I would like to continue taking these products, but want to switch to a lower dose Hydroxo-B12 with Folinic Acid. I prefer to take no more than the RDA of 400 mcg DFE. You used to make two separate products B-12 and Folinic acid, but they have been combined into one. Can you suggest options? Thank you very much, Islenya | Beautiful name :) I think I have a great solution for you - one that provides low amounts of folinic acid and low amounts of hydroxocobalamin while also providing some antioxidants. Consider:
You may want to look at Iodine levels and Selenium as well. Low vitamin D3, low selenium and low iodine levels are both associated with increased risks. In health, |
I take hydroxy b12 and colonic acid for slow COMT (I'm homozygous for both genes) and slow MTHFR A1298C. It seems I can't tolerate the methylated vitamins so I take these. My primary issue is anxiety the suddenly came on 2 years ago. The hydroxy b12 and folinic acid have helped significantly. However, the main problem that seems to hang on is morning anxiety. I wake up feeling very anxious (it's a physical feeling in the gut) and this lasts for an hour or more. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! | There are a number of things that can be going on. I am heterogeneous MTHFR with slow COMT and found that methyl folate and methyl B12 worsen my anxiety. I am very sensitive to side effects of medications and supplements. My homocysteine level is 10.9. I don’t want to overwhelm myself with too many supplements at once. Is this a good supplement to start with or do I need to take something else like NAD or another before retrying supplements? I also take Zoloft 25 mg and not ready to stop that yet as I’ve had a rough year. I appreciate any insight and plan on reading your book too. | So many people have genetic variations in their MTHFR and COMT enzymes. That's not the problem. The problem to look at is what is overwhelming your MTHFR and COMT genes? What are you doing or not doing that is overwhelming them? Or - possibly you aren't overwhelming them at all you just have a genetic variation in them. That's ok. It's when you start getting symptoms is when you need to start looking into some changes. A homocysteine of 10.9 umol/L is something to look into. I like your thinking of using non-methylated forms of folate and B12. I do find that people who are low in serotonin are more likely to experience side effects from methylfolate and methylcobalamin. Zoloft is a SSRI so it supports trying to raise serotonin levels in the brain. So it makes sense why you're sensitive to the methyl donors. I also find those with high histamine are sensitive to methyl donors - and those with high histamine also tend to be low in serotonin as inflammation (triggered by high histamine) lowers serotonin. This combination is supportive of your healthy homocysteine levels and mood.* In health, |
Hello, I am addressing an iron deficiency without anemia and I was advised to take iron with B12 and folate. My folate is currently optimal and my B12 is just below optimal. I heard I should supplement because the iron will deplete my other levels. Should I only take a partial dose of the hydroxo b12 folate? I did buy a bottle. Thank you. | I would use only a partial of the lozenge as needed, yes. Consider:

Hi! My daughter is on medical keto and I would like to know the nutrition facts for this supplement she needs to take. Specifically the carb count. Thank you very much! | There are no carbs in this supplement. In health, |
Apologies. My last question wasn't clear so I am re-asking it. To be clear, I only take the hydroxy b12 with folinic acid. I do not take methyl b12 as well. I have high homocysteine (MMA was normal) and borderline low folate. I started taking a quarter of the tablet and it helped restore my energy, but I have noticed it does make me a bit more sulfur sensitive. I do have sulfur sensitivity issues likely from hydrogen sulfide sibo. I have never done genetic testing so I'm unsure where I stand as far as methylation goes, but I do know that specifically, the hydroxy b12 form is supposed to also help process sulfur and is recommended for that. However, when I take half a tablet, my sulfur headaches seem to increase as well and I feel a bit of dizziness when I take more. So, on one end, this product seems to help restore my energy, but are these reactions possibly because I should be using the the methyl B form instead? How does one know if they should be using hydroxy b12 or methyl b12 if they haven't done genetic testing? Do the symptoms of sulfur headaches and dizziness from a 1/2 tablet of hydroxy b12 indicate a need for the methyl b12 form even if 1/4 of the hydroxy tablet seems to help with energy? | I'm not sure anyone knows the answer to these great questions you are asking. The best way to know is to try and see how you feel. No genetic test or lab test will be able to identify if you tolerate one or the other better. I suspect you may be electrolyte deficient. Thanks so much! | The reactions are occurring likely because you're getting too much. If you are taking the Hydroxo B12 with Folinic acid and the Methyl B form, that's too much. That will definitely contribute to headaches. To support healthy energy, consider:
These should support you quite a bit. Keep me posted. In health, |
I started taking this after COVID and reading information that you posted, that it had helped others reduce hair fallout. I felt like the hair fallout maybe reduced slightly so I kept taking it. I've been out for about a month or more and the fallout seems to have increased significantly. I am 60 and am working with a Functional Med Dr., checking thyroid, hormones etc. I also added Biotin to supplement list. I'm not seeing an improvement. Would you recommend I continue to take the Hydroxo B12 with Folinic Acid or is there something else you think I should try or look into? | I do believe you should continue because you experienced a significant improvement of healthy hair growth, then stopped, and realized that the loss of hair returned.* Adding Biotin is a good idea. In Dr. Lynch's book, Dirty Genes he doesn't recommend B vitamins for a slow COMT. At seekinghealth.com he lists it though for people with slow COMT. I'm trying to figure out how to best support this gene variation. On the website, he recommends Hydrox-adeno b12 with folic acid. I believe that is methylated, meaning it's already ready for your body to use, it does not have to be converted is that correct? I can get anxious with b complex vitamins so I'm trying to figure out which one would be best. I know I can have a harder time clearing harmful estrogens, also wondering what supplement would be best for that. Any recommendations are appreciated. | A slow COMT is best supported by reducing its workload. Often times the best way to support any gene is by reducing its workload. That said, by supporting stress reduction techniques and estrogen metabolism, COMT is supported. In my book, I outline many ways to support a Slow COMT. Using supplements to support a genetic variation should be used along side lifestyle and diet. For supporting your Slow COMT, please do refer to the Dirty Genes book. Additionally:

I’ve been taking this product, as per your recommendation. I have high MCV +MCH .I’m almost done with the bottle. How long did you recommend I take it for? I sent another question on the wrong product thinking it was this one. Thanks! ‘ | It takes about 90 days to get your blood cells back in shape. I'd focus on this for about 3 months. That said, you can also reduce the frequency you're using the supplement as time goes on. You may need it daily for the first month and then you may find yourself feeling more energetic some mornings. On days you feel really good in the morning, do not take it. Only take it if and when you feel you need more support. If you take it too often or too much, you will experience headaches and irritability. We don't want either. If you're experiencing those now, then reduce your frequency of use by 50% and also consider using only 1/2 a lozenge vs a full one. In health, |
We have been taking Hydroxo B12 with Folinic Acid and we recently discovered that silica is dangerous to health and can cause lung disease and is listed as a carcinogen. We cut the lozenges up to take smaller doses and we are concerned about inhaling the silica when doing so. Can this cause a problem if inhaled on a regular basis? Also, is it dangerous to ingest everyday? Why do you not offer smaller dose lozenges since it appears after reading reviews that many people require smaller doses? Department of Health and Human Services and the International Agency for Research on Cancer classify crystalline silica (respirable size) as a known human carcinogen (causes cancer). crystalline silica particles that are small enough to reach the lungs increase the risk for getting lung cancer. Also, are the lozenges supposed to be tan with brown dots? | Silica is dangerous if you're working in a factory using bags or big loaders scooping tons of silica and you're not wearing a face mask. In a supplement, it's not airborne and if you're cutting them up, it's a very tiny amount and not an issue. Silicosis of the lungs is an issue but it's caused by massive amounts in the air - not a tiny lozenge. I have been considering using smaller potencies per lozenge and giving twice as many lozenges. Hi there, thanks for replying. Yes I definitely need to support methylation. I have had so many health issues and strange symptoms for so many years and the years have been spent trying to always figure it out, trying this supplement, that remedy, this therapy etc etc. I am the picture of health as far as my lifestyle goes, but can’t seem to ever feel totally well. I just did the strategene test and report last month and finally feel like I may have figured out why I struggle so much, but now I don’t know what to take because I tried the homocysteine supplement and seems to be making me feel a bit worse. I’ve had a bit of anxiety, seem to have gained a bit of weight and my chronic canker sores have become more chronic. | I recommend a consultation with one of our health professionals on our referral list. Elizma Lambert is great and very knowledgeable with StrateGene. elizmalambert.com In health, |
Thank you for your response! I looked up Braun nutrients and my son fits the description exactly. I forgot to mention he is very sensitive to vitamins and anytime I give him a multivitamin with methylated vitamins he gets irritable, headaches, and feels worse. Between this supplement and the Brain nutrients, which one is the most gentle/least stimulating? | Brain Nutrients is more gentle as the amounts are lower and more synergistic. I recommend starting with 1/4 a lozenge first thing upon waking up. In health, |
What would you suggest taking in addition to this if someone had double MTHFR mutation and slow COMT, is sensitive to methylated b’s but wants these 2 nutrients as well as b6, riboflavin, tmg, and other nutrients that support methylation? | The first question is are you wanting to support methylation because of these SNPs or because you actually need to? Methylation needs to be supported during pregnancy and if your homocysteine is above 9 umol/L. If your homocysteine is fine, then there may be no need for you to take these nutrients. One has to go by symptoms and signs - not SNPs. In health, |
Hi, my son (5 years old) has had about 3 nitrous oxide treatments and has been feeling unwell since- tummy aches, weakness in legs, and feels like "something is wrong". I have the A1298C heterozygous and suspect he also it as well. Had blood work done recently and his homocysteine is 5.0 mcmol, b12 and folate are normal. However a lot of his blood labs are abnormal (high rbc, mcv, mch, hgb, hct, iron) low ferritin. Also has low mood and crying a lot. Could really use some support to help him out. Is this appropriate to try for him with the B minus capsule? I am working closely with his pediatrician, but she is not familiar with genetics and we are still waiting to get a consultation with pediatric genetic specialist. | Glad you're aware of this. Here's what I consider:

I know Hydroxicobalamin lowers Nitric Oxide. I know Methylfolate increase Nitric Oxide. Does Folinic Acid increase Nitric Oxide? If so, should I take the Hydroxocobalamin by itself to lower Nitric Oxide? | If you are wanting to low nitric oxide levels, then I'd use Hydroxo B12 by itself. Folate may support healthy nitric oxide levels yes - not as much as methylfolate but it can. I'd also look into using two other supplements and use both first thing in the morning upon waking, and additionally before exercise, for the biggest effect:
In health, |
Does this product help lower or neutralize Nitric Oxide or does it increase Nitric Oxide? I am asking since it has Folinic Acid in it. | This product would support healthy nitric oxide levels by supporting healthy homocysteine levels.* In essence, it has the potential to increase nitric oxide. In health, |
Did anything change? I just opened new bottle and taste is different and off, is cherry flavor a new addition? It shipped to me few months ago and I just started it now. I am also feeling increased anxiety and shakiness. | The active ingredients are the same. The flavor profile may change a little from Lot to Lot. Your needs for it may have changed. You now may only need a little bit on some days and other days you don't need it at all. Take 1/4 to 1/2 a lozenge when you feel low energy, low mood or low focus as it supports healthy mood, healthy energy and healthy focus.* If you are already feeling good, then skip it. I'd also make sure you have it around some food - don't take on an empty stomach. In health, |
I have been taking Hydroxy B12 w/ folinic acid for a month. I have tried to take up to 4 a day but still no change in the fatigue. Insights? (Hetero MTHFR) | Fatigue has many causes. Dehydration, stress, low cortisol, low iron, EMF exposures, mold, persistent chronic infections, sleep apnea It's not possible to give a recommendation to support general fatigue without knowing more. In health, |
Is it Ok to use to on empty stomach? Since it's a lozenge, I would think it doesn't need food to be absorbed optimally? THNX Dr Lynch:-) | Yep! Start with 1/2 lozenge as it's quite potent. ;) Use it on days you feel you need it - and skip it on days you feel healthy energy and in a good mood. Too much of this and you can experience headaches and irritability. We don't want that ;) In health, |
What is the difference between hydroxocobalamin acetate vs hydroxocobalamin? | They are the same thing. The acetate is the carrier compound for the hydroxocobalamin so it can be absorbed well. In health, |
May this product be taken daily in combination with the MF multivitamin, or would that provide too much folate and B12? What is the safest maximum dose or the recommended dose of folinic acid and Hydrob12 for those with MHTFR C677T (slow COMT, ASD) if their plasma levels are within range (B12 in the 1100s, Folate Serum > 20) ? Please let me know if the amount of folate and B12 in the MF multi suffices for daily support, or if extra should be taken. Thanks! | That's too much most likely. It's rare that one would need that much. Too much folate and B12 contribute to anxiousness and irritability and headaches. Use the amount that feels good to you. It's not about blood tests or SNPs. I recommend using the Multivitamin One MF with breakfast about 3-4 days a week. You take the multivitamin when you feel you need extra support in the morning. On days you wake up feeling great, skip it. For kids, I'd use the Kids Multivitamin Chewable MF. I highly recommend starting your day using 1/2 lozenge of Glutathione Plus Lozenge - immediately upon waking. Have it on your bed stand. In health, |
Can this be crushed and put into my sons water? He is autistic and would not put this under his tongue. He’s 3. | Thank you for you question! While this product is intended to be melted in the mouth then swallowed, you may chew the lozenge as well if you choose. |
