Fish Oil Dr. Lynch product Q&AUpdated an hour ago

Question
Answer
1. Every time I take omega 3 I have fishy mucus all day! I suffer a lot! Fishy taste in my throat all day. What is the reason for this? 2. Can I take omega 3 on an empty stomach or do I have to take it with food? 3. Why does it say that fish oil must be refrigerated? 4. Does omega 3 conflict with curcumin? 5. Why is the dha and epa in the same dose of 400 mg? The doctor said that dha must be higher than epa for brain health!

Hi Anat -

This is a sign that your gallbladder and digestion is weak.

A few things to consider:

  • Our Fish Oil has built in Lipase which is a fat enzyme so that issue you're experiencing should be greatly reduced or eliiminated.
  • Since it's a fat, it should be taken with food yes.
  • Fat can get oxidized so it should be kept in the fridge. This is also why we use capsules instead of liquid - it's more stable and not prone to rancidity like liquids are.
  • it does not conflict with curcumin in fact it may help support absorption.
  • the DHA and EPA are the same amount as it's a nice foundational ratio. You'll still get healthy brain support from the DHA.

I would like to try Seeking Health's fish oil for the health benefits, but in the past when I have taken fish oils my heart palpitations worsen. My Doctor suggested I take SPM Active (a fish oil supplement)at one point. After a while I noticed more frequent heart palpitations. After stopping and starting it several times I can confirm about 2 weeks after I start taking it my heart palpitations get worse. Prior to that I took a brand from the grocery store. Why does this happen?

Hi Deanna -

After some research, it does appear that some individuals do have the type of reaction you're experiencing.

It may be due to how the EPA and DHA are affecting the electrical conductivity through the heart - making it beat more.

I do not think that the Seeking Health fish oil would change the outcome. While it's higher quality and very pure, I do think the concentration of the EPA and DHA are the main triggers in your case.

I am wondering if a magnesium or potassium deficiency makes your palpitations more likely as these nutrients are associated.

Consider:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving in the morning and 1 in the afternoon

Try that for a month and then retry your fish oil. I would not take the fish oil from a grocery store. Use a higher quality one.

Hi, Will you be making a smaller capsule size for kids? I’d love to give this to my daughter but she only swallows smaller sized pills.

Hi Bob -

Yes, it is something I will talk with my team about. I agree. I would like to have smaller ones for kids.

Do you know why taking this might cause an acid reflux feeling? Thank you for your dedication to our community!

Hi Staci -

You're welcome :)

Yes. It is likely because your bile production and bile flow need additional support.

Consider:

  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner to support healthy bile production and bile flow which supports healthy fat absorption.*
  • Digestive Enzymes: 2 capsules with dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

This should make a significant difference.

Can you give this one to kids, 9 years old? And 4 years old?

Hi Anna -

Yes you may.

The capsule is a bit large so may be harder for your youngest.

We do not eat fish in our family cuz honestly we can't find any one that's good for us. I just read that you don't recommend liquid fish oil, so I wanna try this one. So my question is, can my baby take this one? He's 8 months still breastfeeding and just started to eat solids food. If I cut the cap and place the fish oil on his food, maybe a drop? Or would this be to much for babies? I'm suffering from ankylosing spondylitis, could this help with inflammation? Currently I'm taking a fish oil (liquid ops) thats 400EPA 250DHA. I read somewhere to combat inflammation you need to go higher but I'm not sure. Follow your dirty genes since 2 years back, mind blowing. Kind regards, Ruth

Hi Ruth -

I hear you.

It's hard to find great fish.

Wild Alaskan Salmon is great.

A few things to consider:

  • Go gluten-free and cow dairy-free. These are huge for your immune system and often they are big triggers.
  • Low dose naltrexone. Talk with your health professional about getting this prescribed for you.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner for you. 2 capsules may be good but start with 1. This cannot be used for baby directly but baby will get it via your breastmilk. Stop using the liquid fish oil.
  • Vitamin D3+K2 Drops: 1 drop for baby
  • Vitamin D3+K2 capsules: 2 capsules a day after dinner for you
  • Histamine Digest: 1 capsule with breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Joint Nutrients: 1 capsule upon waking and 1 capsule before bed

Keep me posted.

Do the fish oils contain vitamin E or tocotrienols? If not, what antioxidant is used?

Hi Chris -

We test the fish oil prior to encapsulation and it has outstanding purity and rancidity scores.

We do not use antioxidants as the fish oil is enclosed in a gelatin capsule so there is no need.

We may add one in the future but at this point we don't feel there is a need as it is encapsulated.

Do not use fish oil that is liquid even if it has antioxidants. That stuff is badly oxidized.

I was just wondering if the fish oil capsules can be chewed/ opened for my kids? They have been taking fish oil their whole life so I’m not worried about the taste, I just know some pills are not meant to be opened up.

Hi Kierra -

Fish Oil capsules can be chewed if your kids don't mind the taste :).

Because it contains lemon oil it masks the fishy taste. The softgel capsule can also be chewed and swallowed since it's simply made of gelatin.

The biggest concern with exposed fish oil is that it oxidizes quickly and becomes rancid. But if you consume it straight away then this is not a concern.

I just started taking this because I got a really high ratio of omega 6: omega 3.....my ratio was 5...and my ratio of AA:EPA was 8.4...this is all with me trying to avoid seed oils and eat healthy. How could I have this much inflammation! Anyway, I also have the GSTP1 A/G variant and I am supposed to avoid vitamin E because it causes inflammation in these people right? So every fish oil I see has vitamin E. Why? I see yours has natural vitamin E, but I shouldn't take this I guess? I'm bummed.

Hi TGR -

Congratulations on eating healthier :). Having balanced omega 6 : omega 3 ratios are super important for optimal health.

Vitamin E is often added to fish oils as an antioxidant to stop omega-3 fatty acids from oxidizing and going rancid. In fact, I would advise avoiding any fish oil supplements that do not contain vitamin E.

Most people are GSTP1 A/A or A/G. The study that you may be referring to needs to be taken in context. It has a lot of limitations, for instance:

"Limitations of this study are that there was no record of dietary intake, a placebo (control) group was not included, different numbers of subjects were assigned to the 2 α-tocopherol doses, we did not assess oxidative stress or antioxidant capacity (apart from the plasma α-tocopherol concentration), only men were studied, and the mechanism that underlies the α-tocopherol-genotype interaction was not investigated. However, baseline fasting plasma concentrations of α-tocopherol were recorded, and there was no significant difference between low- and high-dose groups (P = 0.065)."

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0002916523028083?via%3Dihub

The study also does not suggest that those with the A/G or A/A genotype should avoid vitamin E. It merely states that those genotypes are associated with poorer antioxidant capacity and that G/G genotypes may benefit more from vitamin E supplementation as opposed to those with A/G or A/A genotypes.

As a result, I highly recommend that you do take the Fish Oil :).

How much vitamin an and vitamin d is in here? Has that testing been done. Some are suggesting taking cod liver oil for thyroid for the vitamin an and d and for reducing inflammation via omega 3. Curious if this would fit the bill for all of those?

Hi Kaylyn -

Very little.

Vitamin D and A are found in cod liver oil mainly. This is not from cod liver.

Be mindful when selecting fish oil that it is thoroughly tested for rancidity and purity. Many fish oils are very dirty.

Hello! How many soft gels would you recommend during pregnancy? Thank you!

Hi Nicole -

It depends on how much you need.

I'd consider 1-2 capsules and that should be sufficient.

If needing more than that, your health professional needs to advise you.

I have heard that fish oil goes rancid so easily, how does it make it through shipping safely with variables like heat, etc?

Hi Taylor -

Our fish oil is encapsulated in a thick gel cap so it is protected from heat and oxygen.

Hello I received this Fish Oil supplement bottle last week. However, i am confused because the actual bottle has different ingredients than the website tab "Key Ingredients -View Supplements Label" It shows: Fish: (Alaskan pollock [source of fish oil], tilapia [source of fish gelatin]). Due to Religious Dietary eating practices, I can only have specific types of animal ingredients. Thank you greatly, for your response.

Hi M -

My team caught this error this morning and resolved it on the website.

Hi Dr. Lynch, the fish oil is clearing me out after taking it each evening (even if I take it spaced out days apart), and you had suggested taking gallbladder nutrients, but I'm pregnant. Can I take gallbladder nutrients once I'm breastfeeding? I'm also taking Optimal PC each evening, should I maybe increase how much or how often I take that? I want to be able to take the fish oil, should the Optimal PC be enough to help that? Or might it help to find a vegan option just while I'm pregnant if my body isn't digesting the fats properly? I'm also taking the digestive enzymes with a few meals each day, usually 1/2 -1 tablet at a time otherwise I find that to be too much as well. Could the Prenatal Essential chewable with milk thistle help with this or is that a different focus? I'm currently taking the regular Prenatal Essentials once a day. Thank you for your help!!

Hi Kayla -

Ah - good point.

Perhaps you're just getting too much fat at once so let's space it out?

Let's do this:

  • Optimal PC: take this with a protein based breakfast
  • Fish Oil: take this after dinner

If still having loose stools, reduce the Optimal PC to 3 nights a week and continue taking the Fish Oil daily.

I'd switch from the Digestive Enzyme chewable to the Digestive Enzyme capsule and take 1 with a meal. I don't think you should be getting the xylitol from the chewable digestive enzymes. People find the capsules far more effective than the chewable enzymes which also makes sense from a stability point of view.

Keep using the Prenatal Essentials as you are. Consider 1 capsule with breakfast and 1 with lunch vs 2 with breakfast and only take the 1 with lunch if needing the additional support.

This should help.

Hi Dr. Lynch, I've been taking this at night and when I wake up in the morning its as if my body is being cleaned out... I've tried spacing it out to every 3 days which seems to make it a little less severe but it's still happening. I know I'm low on my omegas, so wondering what to do here as I would love to be taking them more often and more so not having this unwanted effect. Is this something that eventually should calm down with continued use? Or could I be sensitive to the fish used and search for a vegan option? Thanks as always for your help!

Hi Kayla -

This points to potentially a need for gallbladder and bile support.

Consider:

  • Gallbladder Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner
  • Digestive Enzymes: 1-2 capsules with each meal
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

This should really help.

It's actually a good finding that the Fish Oil contributed to this as it pointed out an area of need.

Comfirming this is good to take in addition to the prental essentials/ pregnancy and just whole family all age ranges ?

Hi Freddy -

Absolutely - an essential combination and valuable support for the whole family.

I recommend taking it after dinner.

How much of the capsule would be appropriate for a 3 year old, 8 year old, and 11 year old? The 3 year old has a speech delay if that affects dosing at all. Thank you!

Hi Steph -

One capsule for all of them after dinner is great.

Also consider:

  • Kids Chewable Multivitamin MF: with a protein based breakfast, consider 1/2 a chewable multi for each of them to start. Increase the amount as needed or as they need. The 11 year old may need a full one or two with breakfast while the 3 year old may just need 1/2 a chewable.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: kids are horrible at hydrating. Consider 1/2 scoop in a glass of filtered water for the youngster and a full scoop for the older ones. They may have a few servings a day if they desire - but spread out over time. It tastes excellent and truly supports healthy hydration.* Kids do not drink so this helps them do that important activity - especially since kids are about 75% water.
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenges: consider 1/2 lozenge upon waking for each of them and possibly only 1/4 for the youngest. I suspect the youngest can do more though. What you don't want is a headache - so if they get a headache, they got too much and use 1/2 that amount you gave prior along with skipping an entire day. Glutathione is essential for a healthy brain.

Hello , wondering what would be a good alternative to get omegas while pregant or will this be in stock soon ?

Hi Chrissy -

We are sourcing a different fish oil and we found a great one.

It will take time though.

In the meantime, consider Life Extension fish oil or one that uses IFOS type of fish oil.

We actually have sourced an even cleaner fish oil than IFOS which is amazing. I'm excited about it ;)

Would this be good for the whole family to take ? A 11 year old as well or is this geared more to adults ?

Hi Freddy -

Fish oil is great for the whole family ;)

As are the Optimal Electrolytes and ProBiota HistaminX and the Glutathione Plus Lozenges.

If taking the essentials or optimal prentals and we're to take this would that be too much vitmain A ? Does this contain vitmain A and at what amount ?

Hi Chrissy -

Great question.

This is not cod liver oil. It's just fish oil which is not derived from the liver.

If there was sufficient vitamin A, we would have put it on the label for you to see.

When is it back in stock??

Hi Helena -

There is a shortage of quality fish oil currently.

We have found another source and are working on getting it in stock.

Be careful when buying fish oils. They can be rancid, high heavy metals or come from farmed fish.

Hello, What fish oil is in this is it cod, krill?

Hi Laura -

We are currently working on a new fish oil. It will contain oil from cold water wild fish. Specifics will be released once we're offering it.

It will not be krill oil. I do not like how krill are being pillaged from the oceans.

Does Optimal Fish Oil contain vitamin d? If so, is there an approximate amount in each serving?
We wanted to clarify a query that often comes up regarding the composition of our fish oil product. Our fish oil does not contain Vitamin D as an ingredient. We ensure that our product's ingredients are accurately labeled so our valued customers like you can make informed decisions.
