Dr. Lynch product Q&AUpdated 4 hours ago

Question Answer

Hi Dr. Lynch, This question isn't directly related to the Bile Nutrients supplement, but I was unable to submit a question under that product, so I’m reaching out here. I'm 49 and in menopause. I've tried various forms of HRT over the years—patches, pills, oral progesterone—more than a dozen times. Each time, I eventually discontinue due to rapid water retention and uncomfortable GI symptoms, particularly dyspepsia (a feeling of fullness even without eating), bloating, and excessive stomach activity/noise after eating, even with a clean diet. It often feels like food is just sitting in my stomach and may come back up. I'm now on a final attempt at HRT under the guidance of Sarah Daccarett, a practitioner who takes a holistic approach and recommends some of your products through her InnerBalance website. This time, the hormones are compounded and administered vaginally to bypass the liver, with a systemic dose of estrogen and progesterone. While some menopausal symptoms have improved after 7 days, the bloating, gas, and water retention have returned strongly—symptoms I associate with trouble metabolizing estrogen. Dr. Daccarett has suggested that some individuals benefit from methylated B vitamins for hormone processing, but I’ve found I’m sensitive to them. Her team also recommended B Minus as an option, Digestzymes from Designs for Health), ox bile (no brand), and Lugol's iodine drops. Given my history and sensitivity to methylated Bs, are there any of your supplements you would suggest to support hormone metabolism and reduce the GI symptoms? I don’t want to give up on HRT again, and I feel this approach may finally work—if I can manage these side effects. Thank you, Stacey

Hi Stacey -

We have the Q and A turned off on many products - but given the demand, we are turning on Q and A back on to all products. I should be able to keep up ;)

I hear you on the HRT.

Estrogen is not only about methylation - in fact, a lot of estrogen detoxification is via sulfation and glucoronidation.

I just designed a new supplement for estrogen detoxification but it won't be out for a few months.

Consider:

  • Given the sensitivity to estrogen, talk with your doctor about stopping the systemic estrogen and just use the local vaginal.
  • supporting estrogen metabolism is very important and that can be done by using DIM+I3C and Calcium-D-Glucarate. Consider 1 capsule of each after dinner to support healthy estrogen levels.*
  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner in addition to the DIM+I3C and Calcium-D-Glucarate is a very effective combination.
  • Digestive Enzymes: 1-2 capsules with each meal.
  • You won't need Ox Bile with the support above.
  • I'd try without the B Minus or Multivitamin Sensitive for now - you may need those or you may not. Try without first.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

Read about the Testosterone Nutrients on our website. And read the reviews from the many women who are also using it. I designed it for me as I was using HRT and didn't like how I felt with it. So now I use this and Optimal Man. Perhaps the combination of Testosterone Nutrients with your vaginal HRT may be enough. We have low amounts of DHEA in the Testosterone Nutrients so that may be sufficient for you. Consider starting with 1-2 capsules a day after a meal. I like taking it after dinner.

Hi Dr! This question is not about the histamine product but your Zinc supplement. For some reason it says you’re not taking questions under the zinc supplement question box. Can you please tell me the difference between the lozenge and the capsule? Will they both aid in helping zinc deficiencies? And which would be better? Also, if I have Sibo.. will a zinc supplement help aid with those symptoms? Especially being zinc deficient Ty!!!

Hi Meghan -

Interesting - I'll have my IT check on that.

I'd say zinc is not my first choice for SIBO.

I have some things for you to consider:

Here are the Guides:
https://www.seekinghealth.com/pages/guides

For supplements, consider:

  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner to support healthy bile production and flow which is key for a healthy microbiome in your small intestine.*
  • Ox Bile: 1 capsule bed to support a healthy microbiome in your small intestine.*
  • Serotonin Nutrients: consider 1 capsule any time of day to support healthy serotonin levels which are tied to healthy gut motility which is needed for those with SIBO.*

If zinc deficient, consider one of our multivitamins like Multivitamin One MF and take 1 capsule after a protein breakfast - every other day - not daily.

To answer your question about zinc -

  • Zinc carnosine is more for gut health support rather than overcoming a zinc deficiency.
  • the Zinc Lozenge is definitely supportive for healthy zinc levels.*

Hi, I have gotten peripheral neuropathy in my feet over the last year from inflammation due to hidden food sensitivities. I also have histamine and salicylate sensitivity which add to the problem. My neuropathy is very slowly TRYING to clear up. I just started taking this and notice it really helps calm down the redness, pain and heat I get in my feet from histamine foods and salicylates. I am so grateful. But, If I take a whole one, I get a little bit dizzy. What does that mean? If I take a little less, it’s fine. Is there anything else you would recommend? I appreciate your help!

Hi Joanna -

I'm happy to hear Histamine Digest is supporting you. Well done for identifying the connection to your neuropathy.

Consider:

  • ProBiota HistaminX: this is a probiotic that supports healthy histamine levels.* Take 1 after dinner. This is effective and gentle and longer lasting effects than Histamine Digest.

  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy cell membranes which are key for nerve health.*

  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner to support healthy bowel movements and healthy microbiome.* This is very important for those with food sensitivities. I've seen significant changes in people once a healthy liver, gallbladder and small intestine is supported.*

  • Digestive Enzymes: 1-2 capsules with each meal as needed.

  • Consider food testing via US Biotek and ordering the Common 96 Food IgG test. Ask your doctor to order it. This way you can identify what foods are problematic for you.

The ingredient label on the Amazon website and on your Seeking Health website indicate the activity of the DAO enzyme is 30,000 HDU per serving for 4.2 mg. Why does my bottle purchased on Amazon a few days ago say 10,000 HDU for 4.2 mg (and the manufacture date is over a year old 02/2024)?

We have updated our labeling to reflect test results received by our supplier for the DAO ingredient. This product is consistently testing above the 30,000 HDU level. Newer product labels have been updated to reflect this.

Hi! Can I take this with my regular digestive enzymes? Just want to make sure I can combine the two, my digestive enzymes have betaine hcl and pepsin!

Hi Natalie -

Yes, you may.

Good question!

Histamine Digest has a protective capsule around it so it shields against stomach acid. This ensures the capsule delivers the DAO enzyme into the small intestine.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Thank you for your quick response. Fantastic to hear that you use delayed-release capsules on the Histamine Digest, and I really appreciate the link for the capsules you use. I was aware that you used a delayed-release capsule (not enteric coating) for your probiotic version, as “Acid-resistant Capsule” is included in the key ingredients for ProBiota™ HistaminX™, and it's also noted in a few other places that you use these delayed-release capsules for that product. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any mention of these delayed-release capsules for the Histamine Digest. I realize I may be somewhat unusual in that I specifically know about and look for that, but I would suggest adding that information about using these high-end capsules to the description on your website. If that information had been there, I would have purchased the product outright. I was planning on doing a crude extraction of the DAO enzymes from pig kidney, just for fun, in my own lab, and it's so interesting how sensitive these enzymes are. I can totally understand how shipping could be an issue, and I am glad that you are also taking extra steps in that process. The 3-Phase Activ-Polymer Technology that CSP Technologies uses for their containers really is interesting. For my own products, which are heat-sensitive, I constantly struggle with the balance between price and shipping stability costs. Look forward to trying your product.

Hi Christian -

You're absolutely right. I'll have the product page updated.

The DAO enzyme is extremely difficult to obtain. Our supplier has been working on the process for many years and keeps getting better and better enzyme activity as they perfect the process.

Be a fun project trying to extract your own DAO :) Have fun with that!

Best
Dr. Lynch

I am writing to inquire about the capsule formulation used in your Diamine Oxidase (DAO) enzyme supplement, Histamine Digest. I am a RN, MSN and supplement artisan and have been evaluating DAO enzyme products for a client with histamine intolerance. I understand that DAO enzymes are sensitive to the acidic environment of the stomach and function optimally in a more alkaline environment. I have observed that your DAO enzyme supplement uses a standard vegetable capsule, rather than an enteric-coated capsule. While I appreciate the inclusion of porcine-derived DAO, which is preferred, I am seeking clarification on the rationale for not using an enteric coating. I am aware that enteric coatings are often employed in other products, even your own probiotics, to protect sensitive enzymes from degradation in the stomach and ensure delivery to the small intestine. Could you please provide information on the following: What is the scientific rationale for using a standard vegetable capsule for this particular DAO enzyme product? Has the company conducted any studies to assess the enzyme's stability and activity levels following exposure to gastric acid in the absence of an enteric coating? Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I look forward to receiving a detailed response that addresses my concerns.

Hi Christian -

Great question.

We do in fact use a delayed release DR capsules for our DAO enzyme.

There are enteric coatings and there are gums which protect the nutrients and probiotics. We don't use coatings - we use gellan gum.

We use the same DR cap for the probiotics as we do for the Histamine Digest.
https://www.capsugel.com/nutraceutical-solutions/hard-empty-capsules/hpmc-designed-release-capsule

Note also that we use a special container called a CSP container which protects the enzymes, and probiotics, from humidity.

It is humidity which is death to enzymes and probiotics as heat increases moisture - and that is what destroys them in transit.

The results our customers are getting when using Histamine Digest speak volumes of its effectiveness.

Will Histamine digest help with gut inflammation? I have Homozygous C677t MTHFR, slow….MTRR, MTHFD1, MTNR1B, PEMT, CBS, CAT, CHDH, ALDH family &ALDH2, ADBR1, DBH, SLC6A3, IDO2 Fast… COMT, TH, SLC18A1, DRD2, MAOA1410T & intermediate MAOA You have said with SIBO (I have IMO…methanogens are sooooo high and can slow the Migrating motor complex) need to keep the bile flowing and think gallbladder, Methylation (which mine is struggling)& Histamines! My PEMT is slow and that means I could have trouble with Phosphotidylcholine which is vital for bile flow! And methylation is poor then folate is lacking and then uses more choline? I have read your book and taken notes and my gut has been bloated for 9 years. I cant get the bile flowing! I just ordered calcium D Glucarate, Oxbile, Histamine Digest and instead of several different supplements going to try your Multivitamin one (methyl free). I would greatly appreciate your advice. I have also been using the High Tech Far infrared sauna you recommend. I want to get better and enjoy life and help my family like I use to. I also live by myself (my Husband passed away from CLL) thank you for all you do to help those with methylation problems. You have a beautiful family and I know you care!

Hi Lynda -

Thank you for your kind comment ;)

Sorry to hear about your husband.

You described things very well. I like the supplements you picked for the most part but I do believe you do need one you don't have.

To answer your question:

  • Histamine drives inflammation. The more histamine present, the more inflammation is present.

We have to be careful though with reducing histamine levels too much as histamine is needed to support healthy digestion and bowel movements.

Consider:

  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner to support healthy bile production and bile flow.* This is key.
  • Calcium D Glucarate: I like your pick here - consider 1 capsule after dinner.
  • Ox Bile: 1 capsule with meals that have fat. Additionally, take 1 capsule before bed away from food. Ox bile is a natural antimicrobial which supports a healthy microbiome.*
  • Serotonin Nutrients: low serotonin is associated with slow bowel motility, constipation, poor sleep duration, low mood. Consider 1 capsule after dinner to support a healthy bowel movement and healthy sleep duration.* Read the product description for this and see if many of the statements I wrote match how you're feeling. If so, then it's a good fit. If not, then it's not needed.

Histamine Digest:

  • Hold off on this for now. Let's get your bowels moving first, then you can introduce this.

Hello, I am just starting researching histamine intolerance as a potential source of symptoms I've been experiencing since childhood ( I'm 40 now). I had eczema and sensitive skin as a child. Very red, fair skin. As a young adult,I had IBS that's mostly better. As an adult, I have dry skin no matter how much moisturizer I use, bright red after working out, red-ish skin tone, rosacea on my face and eyes- ocular rosacea that's been treated as "dry eyes" - dry, gritty, blood shot. I was put on minocycline for these symptoms, slight improvement. I was told to take one Zyrtec daily. Dark circles and puffy eyes no matter how much sleep I get and I've had this since childhood. I haven't had any tests and my symptoms are chronic, not specific after foods. I bought Digest, but can you please recommend if I should start with something else. How long does it take for chronic symptoms to begin improving?

Hi Megan -

You nailed many high histamine symptoms.

I'd like you to dig a bit to narrow down what may be happening.

The Histamine Workbook is very handy as it will literally guide you step by step in resolving offenders one by one.
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/dirty-genes-the-histamine-workbook

You could also get the Histamine Bundle as it's comprehensive and approaches high histamine from all angles to support healthy histamine.*
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/histamine-bundle

I do recommend approaching it from all angles since it has been a lifetime.

Then, after you get a handle on it, you can refine it down to the specific areas - and you may not even need that many supplements after you work through the Histamine Workbook.

Histamine Digest works by supporting healthy histamine breakdown that stems from the microbiome and food and drink.* It's a passive approach as well so it will never address an underlying cause of high histamine. We need to get you support that you will also take an active role in achieving healthy histamine levels so you don't rely on supplements.

I do recommend the Histamine Bundle - and it includes the Histamine Workbook as well.

You should notice improvements within a couple days - and the improvements can persist especially once you start putting the Workbook to work.

Hello, I've been suffering with food histamine intolerance. When I eat high histamine foods, that same night, one side of my sinuses swells with pressure lasting 10min to hours depending how much histamine I ingested I guess over time. Is this something that can help or is there another option?

Hi Deb -

I hear you.

There are palliative ways to support this response or there are more foundational ways.

Consider:

  • Histamine Digest: take 1 capsule when eating or drinking histamine containing foods or drinks. Do not take when not eating them. This is palliative as it supports healthy histamine breakdown via a DAO enzyme.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: take 1 capsule after dinner - this is more foundational as it supports a healthy histamine level in your microbiome.*
  • Bile Nutrients: take 2 capsules before dinner to support healthy bile production and bile flow into your small intestine which is key for a healthy histamine response - this is foundational.*
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenges: 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking to support healthy sinuses.* This is both foundational and palliative.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy cell membranes and histamine stabilization.* This is more foundational.

Am I doing this right? I take Histamine Digest before each meal daily. At night, I take Histamine Nutrients with supper and occasionally in the mornings. HistaminX is taken at bedtime. I also take it between meals if needed. The problem is waking up with discomfort and the thing that helps is the take another Histamine Digest. I try to watch for high histamine food and drink. Am I lowering my histamine levels too much?

Hi Martha -

Good questions.

The key is knowing what symptoms of high histamine feel like and healthy levels of histamine - and then low histamine.

Our Histamine Workbook is very thorough with this
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/dirty-genes-the-histamine-workbook

I'd consider tweaking things a bit:

  • stop using the Betaine HCL - I think that may be contributing to some of the discomfort - and high histamine increases stomach acid which may be why Histamine Digest supports you at night as it supports healthy histamine levels.*
  • switch using Betaine HCL and move to Bile Nutrients
  • take 2-4 capsules of Bile Nutrients before dinner. Some people prefer taking 2 capsules before lunch and 2 before dinner. Some prefer all 4 before dinner or they may just need 2. Experiment and see what amounts work best for you - and it can very depending on what you're eating that day. The more you eat and the more fat you eat, the more Bile Nutrients you need as it supports healthy digestion.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: this supports healthy histamine levels at the microbiome levels which is more permanent than using just Histamine Digest - and less expensive.* Take 1 capsule after dinner.

This should help ;)

Thank you Dr. Lynch for your recommendations. As per my earlier message,  I have chronic non-hpylori gastritis. with severe burning sensation.  Almost anything I eat gives me GERD & stomach irritation. I also have SIBO, leaky gut & lived in Mold for many years. My genetic testing shows slow DAO, slow ALDH, fast MAOA, and fast HRH1. As per your recommendations, I have been taking these supplements for a week now: Digest Histamine (2 daily) Histamine Nutrients (3 Daily) Histamine X (1 daily) ProBiota™ HistaminX (1 after dinner) Digestive enzyme (with meals) Glutathione lozenge (1 daily) Gut nutrients (3 in the morning and 3 in the evening) Optimal Electrolyte (1 scoop daily) I added B12 & Folinic acid lozenge daily since I have MTHFR C677T/ A1298C Haplotype, slow SLC19A1, slowMTHFD1  & Slow NOS3. I have also cut back on histamine-containing food. My stomach pain has improved significantly, but I still have some heart palpitations which I think could be due to high histamine. But For some reason, my hands and feet have been very cold and sweaty for the past few days and I read somewhere that that could be due to low histamine. In addition, I am noticing a strange armpit smell. ...Should I cut back on some of the histamine supplements? or could these new symptoms be due to B12,folinic acid or slow NOS3? Sorry for the long email. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! Maya

Hi Maya -

The cold hands and feet are a relationship between a dirty NOS3 gene and histamine.

As you're working on having healthy histamine levels, your blood flow likely is decreasing because you have a dirty NOS3 gene.

We need to support your NOS3.

This is going to seem weird, but consider:

  • Testosterone Nutrients: 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy blood flow. There are ingredients here that support NOS3 which I believe will help support your hands and feet.
  • Histamine Nutrients: reduce down to 1-2 daily
  • Glutathione Lozenge: reduce down to 1/2 lozenge every other day.
  • sauna or hot bath or steam or walk with a lot of clothes so you sweat - you need to sweat - the glutathione is likely mobilizing chemicals and you need to sweat them out.

I'm trying to help my partner who has histamine issues. He tried Histamine Digest for a week. He felt better for the first few days, but started to develop itchy skin and rushes on his face after a week. He stopped for a while and tried the ProBiota HistaminX instead but he developed a similar skin reaction. Would you please have any suggestions?

Hi Laura -

Good information - thank you

My first question is:

  • How are his bowel movements after starting either of these?
  • Lowering histamine can contribute to slower bowel transit time which equates to potential constipation.

He likely needs to consider:

  • Bile Nutrients: 4 capsules before dinner
  • Optimal Magnesium: 1 capsule before bed
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

Keep me posted with this. This should help resolve the issue.

I ordered this per your recommendation, but I feel like I am getting dizzy every time I take this. I have copper toxicity so I can't take the other Histamine supplement. Any other suggestions? -tons of food sensitivities, -gut/constipation issues-ME/CFS.

Hi Jenn -

Too low of histamine can contribute to constipation. If you're taking Histamine Digest, and it's contributing to more constipation, the absorbed toxicity from an unhealthy microbiome could make you feeling dizzy.

Consider:

  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner to support healthy bowel movements and detoxification.*
  • Liver Nutrients: 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy detoxification.*

Sorry I have also been taking Glutamic HCL, Ox bile and pancreatin to help with digestion and bloating but it seems to work at times and sometimes I still get bloated. I was overmythelated from active B vitamins last year when these issues showed up.My FMD wants me to take higher doses of HCL but i read someinghing in your book about acidic environments but didnt fully understand it. Thanks

Hi Frank

The Bile Nutrients I recommended have Betaine HCL.

These recommendations should support you.

Keep me posted how you are doing.

Hello I have been having some issues for the past year and wondering if histamine is the culprit. No one food seems to cause symptoms consistently but seeing some patterns with chocolate, soy, wine, tequila, red meats, pizza and spicy foods to name a few. I have been getting stuffy nose and chest, have one area on the back of my knee that a hive shows up, dry skin, low BP, bloating and fatty stool. I have tried Fodmap but it hasn't been consistent results so thinking this isn't the way. I have never tested for DAO but I would like to know where to start for testing and consults. Also would this product be a safe place to start with any of you other products? I recently ordered Testosterone Nutrients and Probiota Histamine. Im going on vacation and looking to have a good tip with less issues if possible! Thanks

Hi Frank

Good detail. I’m currently traveling myself so I hope I get this information to you soon enough.

You’re correct about histamine being a culprit but let’s go a bit deeper. Gallbladder and intestinal health.

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus lozenges: 1/2 to 1 in the morning most mornings. Take also when flying as jet exhaust is toxic.

  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner. This supports healthy bile production and flow. Ox Bile is passive. This is an active method to supporting gut health.

  • Histamine Digest: 1 capsule with meals

  • Probiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner

  • Digestive Enzymes: 2 capsules per meal.

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1-3 servings per day as needed to supporting healthy hydration and blood pressure.* Add a 1/4 teaspoon of salt if sweating a lot.

  • Saccharomyces Boulardii: 1 capsule after dinner to further support a healthy microbiome.*

This is very supportive. These should support your vacation!

Have a great time!

Hi Dr. Lynch, I have chronic non-hpylori gastritis with severe burning sensation. My endoscopy showed no ulcer but unfortunately almost anything I eat gives me GERD & stomach irritation. My family doctor doesn't really know what is causing my gastritis since there is no hpylori and autoimmunity. I suspect I have SIBO, yeast overgrowth & leaky gut. I just ordered ProBiota™ HistaminX and Digestive Enzymes. Is there anything else I should order that could help me GERD & gastritis? I am wondering if Gerd and gastritis be due to histamine issues? Thanks for your help! Maya

Hi Maya

Good start.

Here’s some things to consider:

  • Gut Nutrients powder: upon waking, in a liter water bottle, add filtered water with 1 serving. Sip away from food to support a healthy gut lining.
  • Histamine Digest: take 1 capsule with food
  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before eating dinner to support healthy bile flow and movement.* The bile can cause back pressure contributing to stomach issues.
  • Probiota Histaminx: 1 capsule after dinner.
  • Saccharomyces Boulardii: 1 capsule after dinner.
  • Fish oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Gut Nutrients capsules: 3-5 capsules just before bed.

Additionally:

These should support your healthy stomach lining within a few days.

My eight year old has recently become very rashy when he eats anything with dairy, with the rash never really going away. The rash is on his neck, both hands and arms, and when he gets bug bites, they become red and infected. A big rash usually develops around the bites that lasts for weeks. His pediatrician says that he's having an allergic reaction. I have been giving him claritin quite often but not wanting to have to do this all the time. I know that I have issues around histamine and food allergies, so he probably has these issues too. Would you be able to recommend something for his rash/allergic reactions? Thank you!

Hi Katie -

I hear you and it sucks seeing your kid struggle.

A few things to consider:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 upon waking to support healthy glutathione and histamine levels.*
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving a day to support healthy hydration as dehydration is associated with high histamine levels.* Sip a serving in his water bottle with filtered water. Berry and Orange are the most popular.
  • HistaminX: 1 capsule upon waking to support healthy histamine stability.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy histamine in his microbiome and gut.*
  • Histamine Digest: 1 capsule with meals when he is eating foods or drinks that have high histamine as this supports healthy histamine breakdown.*

Hi, I have suffered from chronic migraines since I was a child (now 51). I take a daily cgrp blocker, but migraines still break through and they cluster. Currently on a streak of one every other day for the past week, even on the cgrp blocker. I keep reading more and more about dao and histamine response in the being a contributor to migraines. Do you think the histamine digest can be of help?? Seems like there is no harm in adding it to see if there is any benefit. Thanks-Jared

Hi Jared -

You're correct. Histamine is associated with headaches and migraines.

Consider:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/4 to 1/2 lozenge upon waking. Many are reporting benefits for a healthy head especially if taken right at the onset of a headache.*
  • Optimal Electrolyte: hydration is extremely important so be sure to be drinking filtered water and adding electrolytes can be an added benefit especially ours as of the pretty high amounts of magnesium.*
  • Histamine Digest: 1 capsule with meals. This way you can identify if certain foods or drinks are contributing to your migraines.
  • Histamine Nutrients: 1-2 capsules before bed to support healthy onset of sleep and healthy histamine levels.*
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy levels of inflammation.*
  • Probiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy histamine levels in your microbiome which provides a lasting benefit.* The Histamine Digest is super helpful but it does not provide a lasting benefit - it acts only during the time you take it and then goes away.

A side note:

  • Low serotonin is a trigger for migraines. Serotonin supports healthy blood flow in the body which is unknown by many. Consider 1 capsule of Serotonin Nutrients in the morning after a protein based breakfast to support healthy serotonin levels.*

Hi! I am trying to help my daughter heal from what seems to be high histamine/MCAS type symptoms from long COVID. She is 11. She is getting frequent headaches/migraines, nausea, anxiety/panic attacks, fatigue, dizziness, and her eyes are bothering her (itchy, stinging, blurry). She cries more frequently and then says idk why I cried, it just comes out. But obviously she is tired of feeling this way. It has been going on since Jan 20th. I tried histamine nutrients but that made nausea worse. Her naturopath temporarily put her on Pepcid and Zyrtec and AKBA plus. She is taking probiotic histiminX 2x a day because unfortunately she is on an antibiotic for strep… which isn’t making this better (her nausea was actually getting better prior to taking this antibiotic) She drinks optimal electrolyte 2x a day. Her doctor suggested histamine digest 4x a day if needed. I just reread your chapter on DAO in Dirty Genes, and I don’t want the Pepcid or zrytec to be a bigger problem. I want to help clean her genes but I’m treading a fine line here. We tried l-theanine to help calm her but she said it made her feel funny. B vitamins tend to overstimulate her easily. I’m worried stress nutrients has too many ingredients that idk what might cause a headache or nausea. Would lithium orotate help in panicky times? Or even in the morning? The morning is usually the worst time and sometimes by evening she is more like herself but she does have trouble falling asleep. Everything just seems so sensitive but I know she needs certain nutrients to help her heal. I guess what I’m asking is, do you have any advice? It may be too complicated, but she did ask me me to ask Ben because you and your products have helped us many times! During this sickness too she told me, “Ben really does know how to make a good electrolye. His are the best!” Prior to this COVID craziness, she was taking your methyl free kids multivitamin (usually one most days but not when feeling good), histamine nutrients at times, fish oil, probiotic, and optimal electrolyte (sometimes 2 servings). Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Hi Stephanie -

Sorry to hear your daughter is struggling with this.

It sucks not seeing our kids running around laughing.

Infections definitely deplete us all.

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 a lozenge in the morning upon waking and another 1/2 each time she feels her head feeling foggy as this supports healthy clarity.* She may need this more often now than otherwise given the situation.
  • Immune Intensive: 1 serving after dinner until the bottle is gone then stop.
  • measure her vitamin D and she may need Vitamin D3+K2 capsules - 1 per day after dinner
  • Optimal Electrolyte: continue using as she desires as much as she wants. She knows when she needs it and when she doesn't. Have her mix it in filtered water in a water bottle and sip over time.
  • Kids Optimal Focus: 1/4 to 1/2 a lozenge in the morning after a protein based breakfast
  • Saccharomyces Boulardii: 1 capsule after dinner - a must for many reasons.
  • ProBiota HistaminX: continue as you're doing - but when antibiotic is done just go down to once per day after dinner
  • Gut Nutrients: 3 capsules before bed to support a healthy gut lining.*
  • Lithium Orotate: yes - I agree - using this on an as needed basis may be supportive for her. Can take anytime of day or night.
  • look into HistaminX and consider 2 capsules as needed possibly twice a day.
  • consider having her doctor order a gut stool microbiome test and a 96 food allergy IgG panel from US Biotek.

Hi Dr. Lynch, I have a couple of questions about what seems like a problem with histamine. A couple months ago I got an itchy red rash on my neck (also my skin in general became even dryer than usual and my face seemed chapped). Never happened before. I went to my dermatologist and got prescription cortisone cream which cleared up the rash before I remembered my StrateGene report mentioning histamine. A few to mention: NAT2 and MAOA (slow) underlined and DAO (slow) and ALDH2 in bold. I realized I have been eating a very high histamine diet, no junk food or sugar but tons of fermented foods including homemade Reuteri yogurt, which has totally helped my gut (history of Sibo, candida, leaky gut) over the past year and a half, but may be affecting the amount of histamine in my body. Also lots of miscellaneous high histamine foods like fish, sharp cheddar, tomatoes... I started all 4 Histamine supplements and cut out the high histamine foods and the rash has stayed away for the most part. But I wonder if it might be related to my gall bladder and liver or something else. Possibly relevant: I started using essential oils (diluted of course) in my face and body oils shortly before the rash, many years ago I had gall stones (but that's been okay for years and I now eat plenty of good fats), I have a slow MTHFR and am somewhat chemically sensitive. Other supplements I take: fish oil, magnesium glycinate, Vitamins D and K, kelp for iodine, your electrolytes and recently started your Super C. (but often still feel dehydrated even with the electrolytes 1-2 x per day). Thank you so much if you have any guidance for me! I've gotten a lot of great info reading your replies to others' questions!

Hi Sue -

Sounds like you figured it out - I agree with your assessment.

Histamine intolerance is essentially the inability to process histamine faster than you're putting in.

A reason why you may feel dehydrated is because high histamine increases urination - so you may be peeing out fluids more than retaining.

You don't want to lower histamine too much as it can cause fatigue the next day. By you adjusting your diet, you may likely need to use less of the healthy histamine supportive supplements.*

Consider:

  • limiting your ingestion of histamine foods and drinks which sounds like you are
  • stop the homemade yogurt - it did its job of healing your gut - so you're good sounds like.
  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner. I agree that gallbladder is affected due to the high fat foods of yogurt and cheese and possibly fatty fish. Age also reduces gallbladder function - plus it's just good to support a heavily worked organ.
  • ProBiota HistaminX: take 1 capsule after dinner. Stay on it until you notice that your stools may be getting harder to pass - constipation. Then pause. Resume if histamine symptoms come back as this supports healthy histamine levels.
  • Histamine Nutrients: take 1-2 capsules before bed IF needing to support healthy onset of sleep - otherwise skip.*
  • Histamine Digest: take 1 capsule as needed when eating high histamine foods only - otherwise skip it.

Dr. Lynch

Thanks for all your amazing products! My question is, out of all the histamine products you have, which one would be most suited for those in perimenopause, who are estrogen dominant and really struggling with histamine symptoms, and for me especially around ovulation.

Hi D -

Great question.

Histamine Nutrients.

Consider:

  • Histamine Nutrients: 2 capsules before bed.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving in the morning upon waking and another midday. This supports healthy magnesium levels as well which are needed for both histamine and estrogen support.*

If you find that this supports you, but not enough, you may either:

  • take Histamine Nutrients before bed and again later in the day.
  • or add in HistaminX and take 2 in the morning upon waking.

This way you get more support and it's less expensive than taking 4 capsules a day of Histamine Nutrients.

I have indolent systemic mastocytosis and I purchase the Dirty Gene book and had the test StrateGeme ran. I am having a hard time getting someone to help me understand the report so I can hopefully get the correct supplements needed. I have purchased Histamine Digest and the Probotics. Can someone help me with this? I did reach out to one contact that on the list and she was nice but I did not get the results I needed. Thank you.

Dr. Lynch every spring or even before spring when warm air and wind moves in my 10 year olds OCD, clothes sensitivities, anxieties start to really flare up. Im wondering if histamine is causing her issues? She used to have visible bad allergy symptoms - at times her face would turn splotchy/runny nose/etc.. We don't see these allergy symptoms now, but her other issues really start to flare up - OCD, anxiety. These things bother her all year long (cant seem to find the solution for this) but its worse in spring or even 'pre spring'. Would a histamine supplement help and which one? Thanks so much! I have histamine digest and probiota histamin x here at home now.

Hi Melissa -

This is bringing up my Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine training a bit.

It's sounds a bit like excess Vata and low Kapha sneaks in - from the Ayurvedic approach.

If she has gone through the entire Fall and Winter without vitamin D, perhaps she is low vitamin D. Vitamin D is needed to support healthy serotonin levels and it seems like she is experiencing low serotonin.*

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus: 1/2 lozenge in the morning upon waking and, if needed, and seeing benefit from 1/2 lozenge in the morning, and symptoms return, consider another 1/2 to 1 lozenge later in the day to support a healthy mood and healthy histamine response.*
  • Optimal Electrolyte: hydration is so key for kids - and adults. They just don't drink water. Have her drink a full serving upon waking up in the morning and another midday. Orange and Berry are popular.
  • Have her eat protein with each meal - especially breakfast. Very important. Never just carbs - ever.
  • Vitamin D3+K2: you can do 1 capsule after dinner or the Drops and take 5-10 drops after dinner. Measure her vitamin D level and read the 'How to use Vitamin D' document on the product page under the images.
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

Let's start here and see how she does.

If she still needs further support, consider:

  • Lithium Orotate: 1/2 to 1 capsule after breakfast to support a healthy mood.*

Hello Dr Lynch, first I want to thank you for all that you are doing! Your information is helping so many people and we are all so grateful! My story: I got pregnant two years ago, high risk pregnancy due to a loss in 2021. From week 5 to 18 I had terrible morning sickness and at week 20 I started having early contractions. I was put on procardia which made me feel worse, I was so swollen and dizzy everytime I had to take it (every 4 hours). But it did help and I delivered at week 38th a beautiful baby girl. I just found out I’m pregnant again and this time around, I started taking probiota histaminX and will order histamine digest as well. I started taking your optimal electrolytes and your prenatals. I would love to prevent early contractions this time around (irritable uterus). Is there anything else I can try? I do have a slow gallbladder as well and I get a dull ache around it and liver. I so appreciate any help. 🙏🏻😊

Hi Ioana -

You're welcome ;)

You're on the right track with your selections.

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0010/0250/4310/files/Your_Complete_Guide_to_Healthy_Gallbladder_Function.pdf?v=1733952644

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1 lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and another midday
  • Prenatal Essentials or Optimal Prenatal: divide the suggested use in the morning after breakfast and lunch.
  • Fish Oil: 1 after dinner
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 after dinner
  • Optimal PC: 1 after three nights per week
  • Histamine Digest: 1 with meals especially if containing histamine or histamine-releasing.

Have a great pregnancy!

Dr Lynch, I'm looking for the correct supplement for my son. His genetic test showed mutations that make DAO not work well with slow histamine metabolism. Would you recommend starting with Histamine Digest? He has reduced ability to breakdown sulfur so not sure about the glutathione supplement although his Genova test showed need for Glutathione. He also has a high sensitivity to salicylate and slow MAO. I feel like you have so many supplements to help these needs just not sure where to start! Thank you!

Hi Amy -

I'd first focus on what symptoms are present. The genetic testing is useful knowledge but we need to know what he is struggling with so we can support.

Please submit a new question and detail out what he's struggling with.

It is never a good idea to supplement just based on genetic findings alone.

Hi, Dr. Lynch, I'm over 1 year into a strict elimination diet and gut health protocol with a function health provider after finding many food sensitivities. My ALDH, DAO and NAT2 are all slow genes for me. Over the past few months, I've noticed the skin under my eyes with itch, then I'll get bags under them and then the skin stays red and hot for quite awhile. On the worst flare ups, the skin will peel afterwards. We suspected it was a histamine rash so I started taking Histamine Nutrients, both morning and night, and Histamine Digest once a day with my largest meal. I have not noticed an improvement. Should I be considering HistamineX instead of one of those? I uploaded a pic of the rash to this profile pic in case it helps to see it;) Is there anything else we are missing or should be considering? I wondered about too much Niacin, but I was getting these flare ups before starting Histamine Nutrients and Histamine Digest, but the rash doesn't go away in a couple of hours. Can be days at a time. Thanks in advance!

Hi Meagan -

Thank you for sharing good detail.

A niacin flush is short lived - about an hour max.

Are you being strict with your food?

Typically, many food sensitivities are associated with an inflamed digestive system and imbalanced microbiome.

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1 lozenge upon waking
  • Gut Nutrients capsules: 3 capsules upon waking and 3 before bed
  • Bile Nutrients: 4 capsules before dinner
  • Saccharomyces Boulardii: 1 capsule after dinner
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 2 capsules after dinner

Additionally:

  • do a gut stool test
  • look for mold in your home, car, office
  • evaluate what soaps, skin care you are using
  • filter your water including shower water and bath water - get a chlorine shower filter
  • drink only filtered water
  • I'm wondering if you're nutrient deficient due to the strict elimination diet

Have you tried the carnivore diet: meat and fruit essentially?

really appreciate everything that Dr Lynch is doing in terms of educating the public. I’ve listened to many of his fascinating podcasts and read his book dirty jeans in an attempt to find the answer to my eczema, food allergies & low tolerance to stress. Dr Lynch mentions visceral massage for gallbladder and liver health has been an absolute game changer for him. I’ve been trying to find somebody in the UK that will do that for me. I live in West Yorkshire. Unfortunately, I cannot find anyone. My family are currently treating me to daily sessions with a very experienced Reflexologist and remedial masseur to get to the bottom of my spreading eczema. If I could provide him with a worksheet as to what he needs to do, he could perform the visceral massage for me . Would it be possible for me to get some instructions somewhere? Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you so much for the support you provide to some very desperate people.

Hi J -

The visceral manipulation practitioners keep this information very close and do not share it online which is unfortunate.

Perhaps you can find a book - but even that is closely guarded.

A few things you may want to consider:

  • Coffee enema: while this sounds weird - it may be very supportive for you. There are videos online about this. Please watch them.
  • Castor oil packs over your liver/abdomen - do this each evening - find a video online.
  • Food elimination diet - there's a great book on Amazon about this - read it and apply. Eczema is heavily food driven. Going 100% gluten and dairy free is a great start.

In terms of supplements to support a healthy gut and healthy skin, consider:*

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenges: 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking and another 1/2 possibly midday
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving twice daily - morning and afternoon
  • Stress Nutrients: 3 capsules with breakfast
  • Digestive Enzymes: 2 capsules with each meal
  • Histamine Digest: 1 capsule with each meal
  • Bile Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Gut Nutrients: 4 capsules before bed

I get this is a lot of supplements - it's only for a few months to get you back in shape.

Then you can reduce many of them.

These will really give you a significant jump ahead.

Dr. Lynch

Hello, I have been using this product in our family for awhile now. I personally don’t use it that often, but when i do I open the capsule sprinkle on my food. I don’t take the whole thing because I tend to be sensitive to supplements. Can opening the capsule irritate my tongue and mouth? Because lately my mouth and tongue have been reacting to many different foods, nuts, fruits, different cookies and sweet treats. I can’t pin point a specific food, because it’s many different things. It’s almost like my mouth and tongue either tingle or they feel like they were burned. Went to the doctor and they gave me allergy test. Haven’t got results yet. But just wondering if opening the capsule could be messing with my mouth. I only take histamine digest maybe once a week? It’s not daily. What do you think? Thank you!

Hi A -

Histamine Digest is a live enzyme so it may be irritating your mouth, yes.

What I recommend instead is to sprinkle it inside a small bite of food then wrap the food and swallow it.

I'd also consider ProBiota HistaminX and take 1 full capsule after dinner to support healthy histamine levels in your gut.*

If I get allergic reactions to dairy products and products traces of dairy will diamine oxidase be helpful to resolve the issues?

Hi Mario -

If one has a serious food allergy and needs Benadryl or an Epi-pen, Histamine Digest is not going to be helpful in those situations.

If one has a food intolerance and has irritating histamine symptoms after eating that are not life-threatening, Histamine Digest supports healthy histamine levels in those situations.*

I don't tolerate dairy and a waitress at a restaurant mistakingly gave me and my wife a dairy based ice cream which she thought was sorbet. We took a Histamine Digest and we were fine. We don't have a serious dairy allergy but we don't tolerate it.

I'd also look into ProBiota HistaminX and take 1 capsule after dinner.

Dr. Lynch

Hi! Can I use Histamine Digest for my almost 3 year old if I open the capsule and give half a dose?

Hi Meghan -

Yes. Put the 1/2 a capsule on a bite of food. Do not mix in liquid. A bite of organic applesauce is great or something like it.

My son is 5 years old and has repeatedly gotten Impetigo in the corner of his mouth. Unfortunately, it seems to keep coming back. He was diagnosed with hypotonia as a baby and was on a feeding tube until 2 years old. I always worry about his stomach getting messed up from the Gtube surgery. I have recently learned I have histamine issues. Could there be any connection to Histamine and impetigo? Any recommendations? Would the DAO enzyme help? Should I check his genes/dna? Thank you in advance!

Hi Rebecca -

Impetigo is a bacterial infection - usually staph.

Some of us carry staph more than others and it can be a persistent bugger especially given his history of using a feeding tube.

Consider:

  • Manuka Honey: apply this to his areas on his mouth that need support. Do it a few times a day and possibly look into manuka honey bandages or bandaides.
  • ProBiota Bifido: open a capsule and mix into a bite of food and have him take this each night.
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 2 drops each day
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1/2 a scoop in the morning in a glass and another 1/2 a scoop later in the day. This has many nutrients that may be supportive of his growth as it has creatine and ATP along with magnesium and others.
  • Gut Nutrients Powder: mix 1/5 a scoop in a few bites of organic applesauce and give this to him once a day to support a healthy gut.*

For you, consider:

  • I am not sure where the histamine may be coming from in your case or what symptoms you're struggling with.
  • The Histamine Workbook will be a great resource for you. It will help direct you to knowing which Histamine supplement may benefit you along with knowing which lifestyle and environmental things you should focus on.
  • Starting with ProBiota HistaminX is a great option as is the Glutathione Plus lozenges (1/2 to 1 upon waking) and a serving of Optimal Electrolyte for you, too.
  • You could take Histamine Digest with meals - but I'd rather you see if you need that first. The ProBiota HistaminX is more supportive for a long term solution.

Dr. Lynch

Hello, I've been suspecting one of my sons of having histamine intolerance issues. I've changed his diet accordingly and it does seem like he's improved. He used to complain of his stomach hurting after almost every meal. He still does have an upset stomach at times but not as much. I also feel confident that anxiety plays a role so I'm not sure how much of the problem is histamine intolerance. I was considering some supplements to help him but I'm not sure which ones I should try. He's a small 8 year old. He also has multiple food allergies (and asthma) but I think most of your supps are allergen free. Do you have any suggestions both for which products and for dosage? Thank you!

The anxiousness can be fed by the high histamine and discomfort and pain.

Consider:

  • 100% gluten free for 2 weeks
  • 100% cow dairy free for 2 weeks
  • compare symptoms as he goes through this time
  • Make sure he's going poop every day. Often times kids say their stomach hurts and it's because they need to poop and they're too busy playing to stop what they're doing to go poop. I used to tell my kids to go push out the Tummy Monster when they feel it trying to get out. That helped :)
  • Digestive Enzymes Chewable: 1-2 chewables with each meal say right after or part way through - not in the beginning
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 a lozenge upon waking and another 1/2 later in the day. This is key for his healthy breathing as well.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner. You can open the capsule and put into a bite of food if needed.

Let's see how that does.

If he needs more support, then add in the Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme. I'd rather not use this now as he may not need it. If we reduce the histamine too much in his digestive system, then we can constipate him and that would be not what we want.

Keep me posted.

Dr. Lynch

Hello, I have a 6 year old son with a dirty DAO gene. What is the recommendation and best way to supplement for this?? He can’t swallow pills.

Hi Summer -

A dirty DAO is one that needs some probiotics and gut support.

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/4 to 1/2 lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1/2 scoop in a glass of filtered water upon waking
  • Histamine Digest: open the capsule and sprinkle it onto a BITE of organic applesauce or a bite of food.
  • ProBiota HistaminX: open the capsule and pour the contents onto a bite of organic applesauce after his dinner.

Hi I have gerd and gastritis also I’m allergic to everything including foods and chemicals and molds will this help me I also think I have mcsa

It likely will support you yes but it won't get to the underlying issues. Symptomatically you will experience benefit but I'd like you to work on supporting a healthy gut as well.

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 a lozenge upon waking and another 1/2 later in the day
  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast
  • Digestive Enzymes: 2 capsules with each meal
  • Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme: 1 capsule with each meal
  • Liver Nutrients: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Gut Nutrients: 4 capsules before bed and 3 capsules upon waking
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner

This is a supportive combination of supplements that will work on a healthy gut, healthy digestion and healthy histamine response - and also a healthy detoxification of mold.*

I am 3 weeks postpartum and breastfeeding. My little one is struggling with reflux/colic symptoms. I am not sure the status of my histamine, but would taking this possibly improve my child's symptoms? Any recommendations would be great as I would very much like to avoid putting him on medication.

Yes, I like your thinking.

Consider:

  • Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme: 1 capsule with each meal
  • Lactase Drops: a few drops placed directly into baby's mouth just prior to breastfeeding. You may also place a few drops on one of your clean fingers or your areola right before latching. Lactose overload can be associated with these symptoms, too.
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy histamine levels in your gut - and baby's gut.* Consider opening the capsule and giving baby 1/5th a capsule on the tip of your finger during an evening feed.

Could an antihistamine cause the spleen to become inflamed? I have the same response to desiccated liver and desiccated thyroid.

Many drugs have the potential to affect the spleen. I'm not sure if antihistamines would fall in this category.

However, it is possible that antihistamines may have an indirect effect on the spleen. Histamine plays an important role in immune function and communication between immune cells. The spleen manages immune responses and works together with histamine to do so.

It is important to distinguish between antihistamines and DAO enzymes though. They are not the same.

  • Antihistamines block histamine receptors and stop histamine from doing work. Sometimes they do too much work which is why you get histamine symptoms and feel better when you take an antihistamine.
  • DAO enzymes do not stop histamine from doing work. They simply break down excess histamine in the gut.

Hope this helps :)

I have been using histamine digest for my eczema and it helps, but only when used once daily. I learned about this supplement through another question asked which was when I was pregnant my eczema completely went away and the response was your body produces way more DAO which is why I believe this supplement helps my eczema. My question is though, I have no other reactions to high histamine foods, just eczema. I have recently cut out a lot of high histamine foods in hopes to not have to take this everyday and I still am having eczema breakouts. What else could this be? Would a food sensitivity test help me pinpoint what is causing these breakouts?

Well said all around.

Yes. I suggest ordering a Food IgG Panel and seeing what's going on. I like this test but you'll need a doctor:
https://www.usbiotek.com/food-sensitivity-testing

Consider:

  • Glutathione Plus: 1/2 a lozenge upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and another midday
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme: 1 a day
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Zinc Carnosine: 1 capsule with breakfast and 1 with dinner to support a healthy gut lining.*

This combination works on the underlying issues where the Histamine Digest alone just is a bandaid - an effective one but still just a bandaid.

I highly recommend the above along with the lab testing.

My sons (3 and 6) get eczema on their faces (especially around chin and mouth) that begins this time of year and goes through the winter. It clears up in spring and summer. Last winter it got really bad. Would this help, and what would be the dose? I just started them on Probiota histminX and optimal elecrolyte too, but I have a few bottles of Histmine digest, so would like to include it if it will be beneficial. Thanks!

Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme could help.

I would suggest 1 capsule with meals.

Because this seems to occur through winter, I would also suggest:

  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule per day. Your sons can chew these if they can't swallow capsules. They don't have a strong fishy taste :).
  • Vitamin D3 Drops: 1 drop per day.

Let us know how you go.

Hi Under eye bags - histamine related or nutrients deficiency? Potassium? Iron? I've tried histamine digest, and histamine nutrients but no success. Or should I take some more histamine digest? Eating healthy. Supplement with optimal prenatal, gallbladder nutrients, brain nutrients when needed, optimal electrolytes. I look so puffy under my eyes, so frustrating. Thanks!

Under-eye bags are typically related to histamine, fluid retention, smoking, allergies, lack of sleep, and aging (loss of collagen).

  • Optimal Electrolyte already contains potassium and supports fluid balance.*
  • Histamine Nutrients and Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme support histamine.* You could try taking extra of these nutrients. Typically Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme with each meal, and/or Histamine Nutrients morning and night.
  • Optimal Iron may help with dark circles under the eyes, but this is not what you are suggesting.*

Depending on your age, you may want to consider Skin Nutrients or taking extra collagen. Especially if sagging skin is more than just underneath the eyes.

You may also have underlying causes (such as Candida overgrowth) that could be contributing to loss of collagen and sagging skin. This may have to be investigated by a healthcare practitioner.

Hope this helps :)

When I take this I feel like I’m breathing with a 20 pound weight on my chest for several hours, and I feel like I have mild depression. However, I also notice that my brain feels to be in a less excitatory state, which is a welcome effect for me. For context, I do not have a born dirty DAO, but a born very dirty ALDH2. Could that be contributing to my reaction? Would it be best to discontinue?

Histamine functions differently in the body depending on which receptors histamine binds to in different organs.

A very dirty ALDH2 could be quite significant. In this case, you may want to try Histamine Nutrients instead. It has lower DAO enzymes but more support for ALDH2 and brain histamine.

Let us know how you go :)

Elizma Lambert (ElizmaLambert.com)

Would this or probiotic histamineX be causing constipation?

Typically no.

However, histamine does play a role in stomach acid secretion when it binds to H2 receptors.

It is possible that Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme may be lowering gut histamine too much and that this may be interfering with digestion.

Elizma Lambert (ElizmaLambert.com)

What would the dosage be for a 10 month old baby? Would I increase it monthly? What are your suggestions?

This is not an easy one to give to a baby.

The enzyme needs to be in a capsule ideally.

You could open the capsule and put 1/5 capsule in a bite of organic applesauce.

If breastfeeding, you can take Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme a few times a day to support healthy histamine levels.*

Additionally, you could use ProBiota HistaminX and open a capsule and put 1/5th a capsule in a bite of organic applesauce as well for your baby. This is a probiotic to support a healthy histamine level in the microbiome.*

You could take the probiotic after dinner as well.

Is it possible for high histamine to cause high blood pressure? I saw that it can cause preeclampsia in pregnancy but was wondering if it caused hypertension in non pregnant people.

Great question.

From my experience, high histamine is a RESPONSE to high blood pressure. It is not causative.

High histamine responds typically to low nitric oxide levels to compensate.

If nitric oxide levels are low, then blood flow reduces and blood pressure goes up.

Low nitric oxide levels may trigger histamine to be made.

The solution is to support healthy nitric oxide production not lower histamine.

I need to talk about this in detail.

In my book, in the NOS3 chapter, I do discuss how to support healthy nitric oxide levels.

Pre-Workout Nutrients supports healthy nitric oxide levels as does Homocysteine Nutrients and Optimal Electrolyte.*

Hi Dr. Lynch, My 15yo son has benefitted greatly from the Histamine Digest ~ and we've been able to slowly wean him off of it. Just recently (after not having used it for over a month), we've had to "reintroduce" it. Is this normal? Is it also possible that my son could cycle in and out of needing the Probiota Histamine X , or is this something we should keep him on "indefinitely". Grateful for your wisdom! ~Molly

I'm helping answering some of the questions we are receiving.

Great to hear that your son has benefited from Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme :).

It is not unusual to have to re-introduce Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme after a period of not needing it. It means that for the time he didn't need it his 'histamine bucket' was not overflowing. For the same reason, it may be that your son could cycle in and out of needing ProBiota HistaminX.

Something may have happened for him to need it again.

Below are some considerations:

  • Was he consuming more high-histamine foods?
  • Did he eat something (such as sugary or processed foods) that worsened gut dysbiosis and thus histamine release?
  • Did he have more stress than usual?

He can take Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme and ProBiota HistaminX indefinitely. There's no harm in doing so. However, a more long-term option is to find out why he needs more gut histamine support and fix that. This may be something like SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).

For long-term solutions, I would recommend that you work with a healthcare practitioner to get to the bottom of your son's histamine issues.

I am ttc and had severe preeclampsia with my first. My doctor told me to go ahead and get on blood pressure medicine before ttc since it’s still elevated, my question is can I take this in conjunction with my bp meds (nifedipine)? I don’t love the idea of being on bp meds now but unsure of what to do.

Please check with your primary healthcare practitioner first, but below are my suggestions:

I can't think of any reason why you couldn't take Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme in conjunction with blood pressure medication. High histamine is associated with preeclampsia in pregnancy so Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme may be of benefit to you during pregnancy as well.

You may also consider something like Magnesium Glycinate since magnesium deficiency can increase the risk of high blood pressure and preeclampsia.

Good luck!

Can joint soreness be a symptom of a histamine response? Another symptom I have is fast heart rate after a meal - I believe this is also a histamine response ? Also, I guess I need to educate myself, but a histamine response symptom is not the same as an allergy symptom - is that correct? How can you tell the difference? So Histamine Digest should help with the above symptoms, right? And, if I don't notice that one cap of HD is working, it's fine to try 2 caps, right? Thanks very much.

Both joint soreness and fast heart rate after a meal can be signs of histamine excess.

And yes, a histamine intolerance is not the same as an allergy response.

An allergy response is typically accompanied by an anaphylactic reaction such as difficulty breathing, extreme swelling, etc. which can be life-threatening.

A histamine intolerance response is typically accompanied by rashes, discomfort, some swelling, but not a life-threatening response.

If your symptoms are related to histamine intolerance then Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme should help. You can try more than 1 capsule at once since Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme is just an enzyme and it's hard to overdose. The more histamine you have to break down, the more enzymes you need.

Let us know how you go :).

Regards,

I am struggling with leaky gut, SIBO, severe constipation, and histamine issues for 3 years. I experience swelling, rashes, heartburn, severe headaches, and weakness after consuming certain foods that contains histamine, For instance, drinking bone broth caused me to swell up, develop a rash, and experience severe headaches and weakness. High-histamine foods also lead to swelling, acne, and persistent symptoms that can last up to two weeks it can worsen around my period time. I also tried digestive enzymes, but they caused severe stomach pain. and some probiotics dont work with me. Bowel movement is a big concern for me aswell. I have stopped eating gluten, dairy, I try to avoid processed foods and refined sugar. Could you please advise me on what supplements or treatments might be suitable for my situation?

Well done on avoiding processed foods and refined sugar :). It's an important step to improve gut health.

I really recommend you work with a healthcare practitioner as your issues have been long-term and you may need some expert help.

If you experience stomach pain with digestive enzymes then it is likely you may have a thinned gut lining. In this case, digestive enzymes containing protease may not be suitable for you at this time.

Probiotics are generally not a good idea if you have SIBO. ProBiota HistaminX may be OK.

I suggest using Gallbladder Nutrients and Ox Bile at the moment:

  • Gallbladder Nutrients: Take 2 capsules with breakfast and dinner.
  • Ox Bile: Take 1 capsule mid-morning, 1 capsule mid-afternoon, and 1 capsule before bed on an empty stomach.

Also, use Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme with food to help reduce histamine reactions.

Hello, I was listening to the following episode (Mikhalia Peterson - Detox Hacks, Histamine Intolerance, Genes and Toxic Substances in the Environment | Dr. Ben Lynch - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR02eWsFK2I) and Dr. Lynch talks about organ massage (1:40:00). The first time I listened I thought he mentioned Dr. Aaron Choy. Can you please tell me what qualifications to look for when trying to find a practitioner who does organ / liver massage?

Dr. Aron Choi.

It's visceral manipulation.

I would say who trained them and what experience do they and what are their online reviews like.

It's an area I'm not well versed in but I do know it's useful when done properly.

I’m not sure if I have histamine issues but I have itchy eczema-like patches on my legs that come and go. Surprisingly they went away when I was pregnant but came back shortly after. I thought it may be a gut issue problem but have been on a protocol and that doesn’t seem to be working. Could this product help?

It's a good idea to give it a shot for sure.

There are some things that are triggering your histamine responses so I recommend taking a photo of each of your meals. Then, look for patterns of foods and your patches. Then, work on eliminating those foods and drinks.

I highly recommend eliminating gluten and cow dairy to start for 10 days and see how you are doing.

Consider:

  • Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme: 1 capsule with each meal
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 to 2 capsules a day after dinner. Then check your vitamin D levels in 1 month.
  • Gallbladder Nutrients (being renamed to Bile Nutrients): 2 capsules before dinner for a few days then increase to 4 capsules before dinner if needed.

During pregnancy, your immune system is more tolerant by design in order to not attack baby as the baby is foreign.

Thus, supporting a healthy immune system is key and the above supplements support this.*

How do I know for sure if I have histamine issues? Is there a lab test? I take the Histamine Probiotic currently. I have extreme nausea after random meals but haven't noticed a specific food trigger it. I also had 2 HG pregnancies and the probiotic did not help but maybe I need the other supplements Dr. Lynch recommends. Also, will I need these for life or do they work to truly get rid of Histamine issues?

There are expensive lab tests but I typically don't recommend them. Go by symptoms instead.

Consider:

  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 to 2 servings a day
  • Gallbladder Nutrients: 2 capsules before dinner
  • Digestive Enzymes: 2 capsules with meals
  • Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme: 1 capsule with meals.

As you work through identifying what may be triggering factors, you may not need these supplements as much.

I recommend the Histamine Workbook as it will really help pin point potential problem areas with solutions to consider.

Try keeping a journal in your phone with your meals - or take a photo of your meal and then say how you feel in your note. This way you may find potential aggravating factors.

For food allergy testing, I do recommend IgG testing the common foods. I like US Biotek for this:

I get hyperemisis gravarium during pregnancy but have no other symptoms pre or post pregnancy. Can these help? Will the non pork histamine products also help? I don’t really want to take pork.

The most effective healthy histamine supportive supplement we have is Histamine Nutrients.* It supports the entire histamine pathway in a comprehensive healthy way.* This also has some pork in it but not as much.

For a prenatal, I'd consider the Prenatal Essentials and take 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast and 1 capsule with a protein based lunch. The higher amounts of vitamin B6 is very supportive.

Additionally:

  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy histamine stability in the cell.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy histamine with probiotics.*
  • Protein: eat protein before you get nauseated. You may need to eat smaller but more frequently.

Can this product be given to babies by opening the capsule?

It may yes.

It's best mixed into a bit of baby food or teaspoon of breastmilk or formula right after feeding as the food protects the active DAO enzyme from degradation.

I also recommend opening a capsule of ProBiota HistaminX and sprinkling a bit into the baby's mouth or putting some on a clean dry finger and wiping it inside baby's mouth.

MICROCRYSTALINE CELLULOSE is a Mast Cell trigger and it is in your ProBiota HistaminX and Histamine Digest. Do you or can you make either of these without it? My wife has MCAS and is highly sensitive to many additives if foods and medicines, so in our research to eliminate any triggers that activate it, we found that pharmaceuticals and supplements contain various forms of cellulose and they trigger and activate mast cells. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you

I have been using this for decades with success.

That said, I will do research on this topic and see what we can do.

I do believe the benefits of ProBiota HistaminX and Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme will exceed the microcrystalline cellulose. If not, she may return them for a full refund.

I'd also look into Histamine Nutrients, Fish Oil and Stress Nutrients.

Our Histamine Workbook is very informative and helpful in identifying potential causes of why histamine is high in the first place. There are many things in there that may be triggers that you both may be missing.

I get acne whenever I eat more than a small amount of dairy. Is this a hormonal issue, gut issue, or a histamine response? Would Histamine Digest help this? And just to clarify - it's okay to continue eating suspected histamine response trigger foods while the gut is healing - that's what Histamine Digest is for, correct? Thank you!

Dairy increases IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) in the body. IGF-1 increases androgen signaling and is associated with acne, so I'd say that it's more likely to be a hormonal response triggered by dairy.

Having said that, histamine can also stimulate the expression of IGF-1.

Yes, Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme will help to break down histamine in the gut from food or bacterial sources.

Look at it like a bucket. The more your 'histamine bucket' is overflowing, the more Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme you may have to take. Your gut will heal quicker if you also limit high-histamine foods.

But taking Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme when you are consuming let's say alcohol will help minimize any histamine symptoms that you may typically get from consuming alcohol.

Hope this helps :).

Hello, I take HCL, and digestive enzymes right before meals. I assume it's okay to also take Histamine Digest together with these supplements, and that none of them will interfere with each other? I also take a handful of other supplements after meals - are there any other supplements that Histamine Digest might interfere with? Thanks much.

It's perfectly OK to take Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme together with the HCl and other digestive enzymes. You really are just adding another enzyme (DAO) into the mix.

There are no other supplements that Histamine Digest interferes with that comes to mind.

Hello, I bought this product from you with a production date of 05/2022. How do I know the expiration date of this product?

Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme is a DAO enzyme. Shelf-life is typically 24 months (2 years) from the manufacturing date.

DAO enzymes may still be viable after 24 months, but there are no guarantees. Enzyme activity will tend to decrease after this period of time.

There's no harm in taking them, but they may not be as effective.

DAO enzymes are sensitive to heat and need to be refrigerated.

Hope this helps :).

Hello, I have Alpha Gal Syndrome so I can’t take any mammal products: porcine, gelatins, gelcaps etc…. I also have a problem with high histamine, especially with foods and fragrances, and was wondering what products you may have that might help that is Non mammal. Thank you Warren Musgrave

There are a few options for you:

  • Glutathione Plus lozenges: take 1/2 to 1 lozenge upon waking in the morning
  • HistaminX: take 1-2 capsules once to twice daily to support healthy histamine stabilization.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: take 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal Electrolyte: drink 1 serving or more a day to support healthy hydration which is key to supporting healthy histamine concentration.*

Question about magnesium- I just ordered Optimal Magnesium. I have MTHFR and feel best taking 500mg. I’m taking 3 a day - is there a better combination of products to meet this goal? Thank you! Julie VonGunten

Great question.

There is a better combination.

Consider:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 to 3 servings a day. Each serving provides 125 mg of magnesium. Consider starting your day with 1 serving right upon waking and then have another one midday or while exercising.
  • Optimal Magnesium: 1 to 2 capsules before bed which provides 150 mg of magnesium per capsule

In health,
Dr. Lynch

ello I am seeking help as I read through Dirty Genes and have been adding your products with great success. I’m taking Histamine Digest before every meal. I added Optimal Electrolyte first, just a little at a time and I’m now up to a full scoop 3x a week! Then I added Probiotia HistaminX, opening the capsule and starting with just a little and I am now up to a full capsule 3 x a week! I’ve been able to add these without any ER visits or mast cell reaction. I just ordered HistaminX and will start that very slowly as well. I am also reading your book Dirty Genes and have the workbook. I did have MTHFR testing done and have a report but it doesn’t give me the information that aligns with your workbook. Should I redo my testing? What do you recommend? I’d like to add methylation support next but from my report (MTHFRdoctors.com) I can’t determine my path. Do you offer consultations or can you recommend someone for me to consult with? Thank you for your help. Julie VonGunten

Well done for being proactive and educating yourself on your dirty genes :).
I personally get great results from the Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme, Probiota HistaminX, and Optimal Electrolyte in my practice. So I'm glad to hear that it's similar for you.

The StrateGene report does provide clear pathways including and beyond the Dirty Genes book, so it may be worthwhile for you to get this done.

I don't typically recommend myself, but you can contact me via my website at ElizmaLambert.com if you need a consultation.

I’m trying to figure out where to start. I did the histamine workbook. No gene testing but other tests that show low SAM:SAH ratio and diagnosed with “undermethylation” with low zinc and high copper. Take P5P, hydroxy adeno b12, zinc, mag glycinate, NAC, digestive enzymes. Since menopause, my hypermobility is worse and joints are crunchy and muscles spasming and I can barely move and I’m exhausted all the time. I take oral progesterone but can’t seem to add transdermal estrogen without gut issues and increased back pain. I know from workbook I have a histamine issue and eat low histamine diet. I tried the probiota histaminX and it increased back pain which feels like kidney pain. History of toxic mold (we moved so not for past 4 years.) I do take muscle relaxant for EDS. Feel like I can’t live without ibuprofen but now causes kidney pain. Any ideas where to start? I’m highly sensitive to a lot of supplements so really want to go slow with one thing at a time. After workbook was considering the DAO supplement but not sure. I also considered electrolytes but every electrolyte supplement I’ve tried (not yours) gives me heart palpitations. I’d be grateful for any insight on where to start to make a difference.

I like your thinking.

A few things to consider:

  • Sauna - starting slowly and working up - https://www.seekinghealth.com/blogs/education/sauna-benefits-how-to-guide
  • Histamine Nutrients: 1 to 2 capsules before bed to support healthy histamine levels.
  • Joint Nutrients: 1 capsule before bed and 1 capsule upon waking
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal Electrolyte: sip 1/2 to 1 serving upon waking in the morning. Sip it over time. Palpitations are likely due to you drinking high sodium electrolytes and you are likely potassium deficient. These are high potassium electrolytes.
  • Glutathione Plus lozenge: 1/4 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking. Start with 1/4 to 1/2. You likely need this a few times a day but start with just a little and by itself so you can feel how you respond. Mold depletes glutathione in a big way.
  • Gallbladder Nutrients: 2 to 4 capsules before dinner. Do not start this right away. Do the other supplements first for a week or so before adding this in. Liver and gallbladder support is needed due to the mold.

Hi. I'm a DAO Histamine Digest user. I was curious if DAO might work topically. What I know about enzymes is that they are typically too large to be absorbed transdermally, but out of curiosity I wet some DAO powder and rubbed it onto a fresh mosquito bite, expecting it not to have any effect. I was surprised that within a minute the itching went away. Didn't seem like a placebo effect to me. Usually I have a fairly long lasting itchy reaction, except for this time. Just wanted to mention it. Was curious if there might be something useful here, if it actually did work topically. Regards, Dennis

You're correct that it can work topically.

ProBiota HistaminX, a histamine supportive probiotic, has also shown to be supportive topically.

That said, as a supplement company, we can only promote the use of supplements orally.

Sometimes (most times) I get nauseous after taking this. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not eating foods high enough in histamine at the time? I do fine on Histamine Nutrients (I've only ever taken one at a time), so I'm curious as to what the cause may be. Thank you!

You may not be needing this as often as you think.

You want to feel better after a supplement. If you're not, I'd only use this while drinking alcohol or eating foods high in histamine. Otherwise, keep in your cabinet until you do need it.

Hi. what’s the maximum number of capsules a day my son (18) can take a day? what happens if taking more than that?

He can take as needed.

What you're wanting is him feeling good.

If he is experiencing constipation, then he is taking too many.

Instead of taking more of these per day - which he may need - I'd also support other areas:

  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Histamine Nutrients: 2 capsules before bed
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1-3 servings per day to stay hydrated
  • Digestive Enzymes: 1-2 capsules with meals

This is a more comprehensive approach which is more supportive at assisting his body with the histamine.

I have previously had reactions to any pork products especially ones that aren't raised well. I am hesitant to purchase since it is porcine kidney. Should this be a concern? Thank you!

This is a highly refined enzyme specifically designed to digest healthy levels of histamine.*

If you are not allergic to pork, you should do well with Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme.

I am currently taking this and going to start taking Probiota HistamineX this week. I have indolent systemic mastocytosis and was wondering if Dr Lynch has knowledge about this disease. Having a hard time finding a doctor to help me with the symptoms. It has now affected my gut. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

I like your thinking process.

Definitely add Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme and take it with each meal. I'd also consider taking 1 capsule of Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme right before bed.

I believe the best option is the Histamine Bundle as it supports healthy histamine levels from multiple angles while also giving you a very good Histamine Workbook to guide you.*

Hello, I have a 3.5 son who is always itchy :( He has eczema but there are certain foods that makes him itch. I have cut him down on seed oils, i cut sugar as much as possible (too much fruits make him flare and itch 😭) I was wondering to try your supplements on what can help... I noticed probiotics with rhamnosus helps somehow (like i had to top up with culturelle rhamnosus) on top of his probiotics to help with skin dryness But my main concern is on how to minimize itch. I give an antihistamine when he is extra itchy, which of your products can i give him as alternative to antihistamine as well? Thank you

You picked a good one.

Consider:

  • Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme: 1 capsule with meals as needed
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1/2 capsule put on a bite of food after dinner or during dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • chlorine shower filter: install this in his shower so the chlorine doesnt dry out his skin
  • Histamine Nutrients: 1 capsule before bed if needed. This supports a healthy onset of sleep and also healthy histamine levels.*

In health,

I want to know if this supplement will help someone that has Dermatographia. My teen gets really itchy, mostly at night. After scratching, his skin raises and turns red. This takes a while to go away on its own. If I rub castor oil it fades faster.

Castor oil is great.

What's happening at night that's triggering your son?

consider:

  • Chlorine shower filter: chlorine is very drying to the skin so make sure he gets this installed on his shower right away.
  • Fish Oil: this is hydrating for the skin and take 1 after dinner
  • Vitamin C Plus: drink 1 to 2 glasses of this a day to support a healthy histamine response.*
  • Histamine Nutrients: 1-2 capsules before bed to support healthy histamine breakdown.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner to support a healthy microbiome.*
  • check his sheets to make sure they breathe
  • alter your clothes washing detergent to something that is more natural if needed
  • do NOT use dryer sheets as these are very aggravating for those with histamine issues.
  • consider a gluten free and cow dairy free 14 days to see if he improves a lot. Use goat dairy products instead.

Diana Yoksas Jul 31, 2024, 12:51 PM PDT I am very sick. And I’m unable to understand or comprehend a lot most days (long covid and CFS/ME) I was doing very well on the histamine block product taken before each meal. Then the names changed….I can’t read your FAQ’s. I no longer understand much of what I read if it is complicated due to my extreme brain brain fog. With all the various products I order it all becomes impossible to just simply order what I need anymore from the various companies I used histamine block successfully and it made all the difference in the world to my digestion..my Dr said to order something with DAO in it. Every time I run out of product I find there are new products and by different names…I also have a few bottles of histamine nutrients which I can’t read the ingrediients on (print too small) and wonder if this product (histamine nutrients) has a sufficient amount of DAO in it that I can take it instead of the histamine block – now Histamine Digest?? If not I will throw them so that I don’t confuse it with something I can use. Can I use it instead of H. block /digest? Or not? I would so appreciate an answer because now it has come time to order more product and I am confused again. Sorry to be a bother..thank you!! Sincerely, Diana Yoksas [email protected]

We changed the names to reduce confusion for new customers but that messed up our existing one - apologies for that.

If you're doing very well with Histamine Block, now called Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme, then continue using Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme as you were.

We did not change the product at all - just the name.

If I may, to support your brain, I suggest:

  • Brain Nutrients: take 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning immediately upon waking up and again another 1/2 to 1 lozenge around the afternoon if needed.
  • Optimal Focus: take 1 capsule in the morning with breakfast.

Try these additional supplements ONE at a time - start with Brain Nutrients first - and start with a small amount - say 1/2 or less of a lozenge.

You will likely feel the supportive effects within 60 seconds.

Hi- I have an almost 4 month old who is struggling with lots of burping and seeming discomfort due to gas and sometimes bowel movements. I went off all the top allergens for a few weeks and added them all back in except for cow dairy, eggs and most gluten (I eat homemade sourdough). My baby screamed while awake from birth until I was off the allergens for a week. Since then things are up and down and his chiropractor (who has helped with bodywork included tongue and lip ties) recommended me take Histamine Digest. Would you recommend this product for our situation? Thanks, Sally

That's tough.

Yes, I agree with your doctor for sure.

Consider:

  • Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme: take 1 capsule with meals and possibly one before bed as well
  • ProBiota HistaminX: take 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy histamine in your microbiome so it doesn't get absorbed and into your breastmilk.* You can also open a capsule of ProBiota HistaminX and put about 1/4 capsule onto your clean dry finger. Then put into baby's mouth.
  • Lactase Drops: add to the infant formula or you can add a few drops directly onto your areola immediately prior to him latching. This way baby has support for lactose digestion. Sometimes the discomfort in infants is caused by lactose overload and Lactase Drops helps with healthy lactose levels.*
  • Digestive Enzymes: take 1-2 capsules with each meal to support healthy digestion of proteins so they are less likely to get absorbed and trouble baby.*

Additionally, if breastfeeding:

  • Optimal PC: take 1 capsule after dinner 3-5 nights a week to support healthy breast milk flow.* Slow milk flow is associated with mastitis. Also, PC supports healthy baby brain development and healthy baby memory for life.*

Hi Dr. Lynch! I'm curious what the protocol would be for Histamine Digest while taking Metformin. I see it mentioned in the listing and I was recently prescribed this medication. Thanks so much!

Metformin is a DAO enzyme inhibitor meaning it slows the DAO enzyme down.

You would take Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme any time of day - typically with meals - to support healthy DAO enzyme levels.*

In health,

I started to take histamine digest around 2 years ago, they were amazing. They improve my energy hugely but unfortunately after not too long, things changed. I didn't continue to feel as good I know something was wrong but didn't understand. I was informed by health professional that for some people these can stop working. I have recently read that this can happen if you don't have sufficient vitamins to support the enzymes. Could you please shed some light on this for me as I would love so much for them to work.

I suspect you may need additional glutathione and histamine support.

Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme breaks histamine down into an aldehyde and if these aldehydes accumulate, then histamine breakdown becomes problematic.

What you need to do is support the entire histamine pathway - not just DAO.

Consider:

  • Histamine Nutrients: take 1-2 capsules in the morning and 1-2 capsules at night before bed to support full body healthy histamine breakdown.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: take 1 capsule after dinner to support a healthy microbiome.*
  • Gallbladder Nutrients: take 2 capsules before dinner to support healthy gut health which is key for healthy histamine levels.*
  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge immediately upon waking to support healthy energy and healthy antioxidant levels as this has glutathione and PQQ in it.* You may take again later in the day say the afternoon if needed.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving daily to support healthy hydration which is key for healthy histamine.*

Hi there, I have had interstitial cystitis for 12 years and experienced complete remission during my pregnancy and breastfeeding (otherwise my symptoms are chronic). Since I experience this remission, my thoughts to the root cause of my issue is that is potentially hormone related and/or affected by the DAO enzyme and histamine. Do you have recommendations on which supplements I should try from Seeking Health to see if I can get histamine regulated prior to going back on perscription medication (elmiron). Thank you, Kris

I like your thinking - well done.

Consider:

  • Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme: 1 capsule with each meal and possibly 1 before bed as well
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Gallbladder Nutrients: 2-4 capsules before dinner (gallbladder and liver get really overworked during pregnancy so this is really needed to support healthy bile production and bile flow.*)
  • Gut Nutrients: 2-3 capsules before bed and 2-3 capsules upon rising in the morning to support a healthy bladder lining.*

This should help significantly.

This question may be best suited for Dr. Lynch. I read that the DAO enzyme requires cofactors such as Copper to function. Will this Histamine Digest (supplemental DAO porcine enzyme) work in a person with Copper deficiency? Would it make any difference if this product was taken with a copper Bisglycinate supplement at the same time?

Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme, our DAO enzyme, works very well for many people as is.

When you swallow a capsule of Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme, you are swallowing the DAO enzyme itself which does not need copper to function.

In order for your DAO enzyme to produce DAO, that needs copper but you are literally taking what the DAO enzyme produces.

If you want to support your entire histamine pathway in a healthy comprehensive way, including with added copper, consider Histamine Nutrients.

Histamine Nutrients provides DAO and copper along with a synergistic blend of other key nutrients which support the entire histamine pathway for healthy function.*

I also highly recommend using ProBiota HistaminX which supports healthy histamine levels in the microbiome.* This is an active approach to supporting healthy histamine levels whereas the Histamine Digest  soon DAO Enzyme or DAO enzymes are more passive.*

My other question is regarding potency. Some websites show this label as having 10,000 HDU Diamine Oxidase activity per capsule, while your website currently states that it contains 30,000 HDU per capsule. Please explain the discrepancy. Has the manufacturer increased the potency somehow?

To answer your question, the supplement facts on the website has been updated to reflect the current activity of 10,000 HDU. There has been testing conducted by the material supplier to support the 30,000 HDU activity. Our next lot of product will be labeled with the new activity amount.

I have a question on the 'Histamine Digest' product. It says this on your product description: - "Supports healthy histamine levels in the small intestines, colon, uterus, bladder, prostate and breast milk." But, the ingredient DAOgest porcine kidney extract is not absorbed systemically, but only passes through the intestines where it can work on histamine in foods that are eaten. How is this product able to help with histamine in other parts of the body?

Great question.

Via less histamine being in the gut.

Most of the histamine in the body actually gets absorbed from the gut into the blood which flows everywhere.

By supporting healthy histamine levels in the gut, you're supporting healthy histamine levels everywhere.

Most histamine intolerance symptoms are associated with gut-derived histamine.

This is why I recommend Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme and ProBiota HistaminX so much for people who need to support healthy histamine levels when their gut is high histamine.*

Hi Dr. Lynch, I've had hives for over 5 years. My allergist ordered many tests, but none identified the cause. He suggested I take DAO to break down histamine-rich foods. After 3 days of taking it before meals, I saw significant improvement but noticed a thin film of oil in my urine. When I stopped for one meal, the hives returned. I'm pre-diabetic, managing it with diet and exercise. Is oil in urine to be expected, what should I do?

I'm impressed by your allergist. That's great that they are aware of the DAO enzyme's effectiveness.

I am not sure what the 'oil' in the urine is. That's new to me.

Please do a urinalysis with your health professional to identify what that is.

Here's what I recommend you to consider to help get to the actual underlying issue as Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme (the DAO enzyme) is great but it will never fully help you overcome the issue. It's a fantastic support but it's not addressing the underlying cause.

Consider:

  • ordering a comprehensive stool test with your doctor such as the one offered by Doctors Data
  • Gallbladder Nutrients: take 2 capsules before dinner to support healthy bowel movements and healthy histamine levels and a healthy microbiome.*
  • ProBiota HistaminX: take 2 capsules after dinner to support healthy histamine levels in your microbiome.*
  • Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme: take 1 capsule with each meal to support a healthy DAO enzyme level.*
  • Gut Nutrients: take 2-3 capsules before bed and 2 capsules upon waking to support a healthy gut lining, bladder and stomach lining.*
  • Digestive Enzymes: take 2 capsules with each meal to support healthy digestion of fat, carbohydrates and protein.*

In health,

Could this also help bladder discomfort caused by histamine?

Yes.

High histamine is irritating to many tissues.

Consider:

  • ProBiota HistaminX: take 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy histamine levels in your microbiome.*
  • Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme: take 1 capsule with or without food - as needed - to support bladder comfort.*
  • Optimal GI capsules (soon to be called Gut Nutrients): take 3 capsules before bed to support a healthy bladder lining as it contains soothing herbs and healthy tissue healing support.*

Hi Dr. Lynch, my son experiences successive sneezing, uncontrollable, actually, so much so that it causes him to miss work and other activities. It seems to happen the day after ingesting certain foods. He has seen a naturopath and she has said he tested positive for dairy and gluten allergies. However, he is 19 and has a terrible diet, of course, with lots of fast food. Any suggestions to stop the uncontrollable sneezing? My sister recommended this product to try. Thank you so much!

I'm going to put on my father hat for a second.

There's a great parenting class that I took called 'Love and Logic'

Essentially, we love our kids immensely which is awesome. With love, also comes the responsibility to teach them Logic.

In this situation, you have an opportunity for growth.

Some day, your son is going to move out if he hasn't already.

Pain is the world's best teacher.

I'd actually say there is no support for you but to go gluten-free and cow dairy free.

Have him do this for 1 week at 100% commitment.

Have him experience what it's like to feel great again - no sneezing and being free to do what he wants when he wants and all he had to do is go gluten and dairy free.

I'm gluten and dairy free - along with no lime and no avocado.

I don't miss my issues.

I could eat all of it but I don't because I feel great.

I could eat all of it and take Histamine Digest and feel ok - but I don't.

My body doesn't want me to eat that stuff so I don't.

It sucks at times - but the symptoms suck worse.

Now, once he finds out he improves so much by gluten and dairy free, then tell him about Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme.

He will take 1 capsule of Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme with meals along with 1-2 capsules of Digestive Enzymes to support healthy digestion of histamine, carbs, protein and fat.*

I've three sons myself - I get it :)

Not easy.

Let the world teach them - and we sit by sending them love as they struggle to figure out which direction they should take.

is there a maximum number of pills of the Histamine Digest that can be taken per day, and what side effects of over-dosage should i watch out for? specifically, (1) is it safe to take 3x/day (e.g. at breakfast, lunch, and dinner)? (2) can it be taken every single day on an empty stomach?

Use as needed. There is no issues with taking more if needing more.

What to look out for to tell you that you are taking too much:

  • constipation
  • loss of appetite

Instead of taking more Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme, consider:

  • ProBiota HistaminX: take 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy histamine levels in your microbiome.*
  • Gallbladder Nutrients: take 2 capsules before dinner to support healthy bile production and bile flow which supports healthy histamine levels overall.*
  • Optimal PC: take 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy methylation and healthy bile production and flow to further support healthy histamine levels.*

Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme is a fantastic supplement but it does not address the underlying causes of high histamine.

We need to start doing that for you which is why I made those recommendations above.

I started the gut protocol this week and am experiencing pain in side and stomach after eatings. Some bloating and gas. I had been taking Pure vitamins pancreatic enzymes and digestive enzymes but was still dealing with constipation and histamine responses. I am doing the gallbladder nutrients and I take ox bile, the digestive enzymes, and the Histamine probiotic after dinner and the optimal Gi before bed and in the morning. Suggestions?

Let's stop the Optimal GI, probiotics and Ox Bile for now.

Continue with the Gallbladder Nutrients and Digestive Enzymes only.

When you feel better, add in the Optimal GI only before bed.

Why did you put a fermented ingredient (ascorbyl palmitate) in a product meant to help people with histamine issues?

Many people ask this.

It's fermented at the time of production.

It's not an issue post-production.

Our histamine products are extremely popular and help many.

I'm considering getting allergy shots and am on the cleans genes protocol as well as the histamine bundle from you. What are the pros/cons of getting the allergy shots while following your protocols?

I recommend making sure you go to your allergy doctor for diagnosis of which things you are allergic to PRIOR to taking any of the histamine support supplements.

If you take any of the histamine supplements prior to testing, your histamine response may be blunted and alter your treatment plan by your doctor.

Once you have tested all your allergens with your doctor, then, by all means, work with your allergy shots in addition with the Histamine Bundle.

The pros are that you will be supported in multiple directions.

The cons are that you are having to do two things vs just one.

You may not need one or the other if using the supplements or shots. Find what works best for you.

By getting the Histamine Bundle, you're also getting the free Histamine Workbook which is very handy at helping pinpoint WHAT is causing your histamine levels to be elevated.

Being allergic to things is typically a response to high histamine - they are not causative.

Things like mold, stress, high estrogen, excess exercise, high histamine bacteria - these are all reasons why people are high histamine and reacting to things.

I took a DAO enzyme pill on an empty stomach before bed. About an hour later I was experiencing a histamine reaction in my eyes and nose with itching, sneezing and stopped up. My reason for trying the enzyme is gut inflammation, brain fog, chronic pain and an overstimulated nervous system. Why would it have caused a reaction like this?

Histamine is broken down by the DAO enzyme into a variety of compounds. If these compounds are not further broken down in the body, they can actually increase histamine.

Many people do well with Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme as is.

Some people do not and they experience symptoms like yours.

I recommend you take instead Histamine Nutrients before bed and 2 capsules. This supplement supports the healthy breakdown of all aspects of histamine - including the DAO enzyme and all other histamine enzymes.*

I also recommend taking ProBiota HistaminX after dinner to support healthy histamine levels in your microbiome.*

Before dinner, consider taking 2 capsules of Gallbladder Nutrients and 1 capsule of Optimal PC. These two support healthy bile production and bile flow which are important for a healthy gut, healthy mood and healthy blood flow which is important for those experiencing pain.*

In the morning, consider taking 1/2 a lozenge of Glutathione Plus Lozenges. Bite it once, let it dissolve and then swallow. You should feel brain fog lift quite quickly as it supports healthy glutathione levels.*

For now, put the Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme to the side. It likely will come in handy - but let's first get a couple things supported further first.

I have an urge to recommend you Optimal Electrolyte as well but I think I need to hold off on that until you get those other things in order. I think they may be too stimulating for you at this point.

Hello, I have tried using the histamine digest three times. The first time was with food, didn’t notice anything. The next two times were about an hour after I had had Advil, and both of those times I got very dizzy and my extremities felt strange. This lasted for a while & for the rest of the day I just didn't feel great. Could this be an allergy or just that I do not need it? I do have, the DAO mutation (see below) however I’m not sure what to really do with that information. I take Advil for pretty bad headaches and it’s my understanding that can raise your histamine levels so I thought this might be useful. DAOA/DAAO rs3741775 -+ Heterozygous CA C - 31% DAO (AOC1) rs2052129 -+ Heterozygous GT T - 23% DAO (AOC1) rs10156191 -+ Heterozygous CT T - 31% Also, if you recommend someone that could help me understand my genetic testing, I would love their info so I could schedule an appt. I'm lost! :D

What's important is to know if your DAO enzyme is actually being a problem for you or it's working just fine.

One does not supplement because they have a SNP in a gene.

They supplement based on need.

A SNP does not mean you NEED to supplement.

It means that you have increased vulnerability for your genes to not function as well - but they still may be functioning perfectly fine for you especially if you are not overwhelming them.

Headaches:

These are often caused by a number of things:

  • dehydration
  • low serotonin
  • high histamine
  • anemia
  • poor eyesight and straining
  • blue light
  • tight muscles
  • caffeine

Here's what I recommend to support your head:

Glutathione Plus Lozenges: take 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking. I recommend starting with just 1/2 a lozenge. Bite it once, let it dissolve completely, then swallow.

Optimal Electrolyte: make yourself 1/2 a scoop in a glass of filtered water. Sip slowly. Sip, hold it in your mouth, then swallow. Do this a few times until you feel your head clear. Then stop drinking it for a bit. Then take another sip when you feel you need it. Use this in replacement of caffeine. You can have a couple servings of this throughout the day. The key is to not drink it too fast when you are sitting or just moving about slowly. It's ok to drink faster during exercise or just after.

Histamine Nutrients: if you struggle with falling asleep and you want to support healthy onset of sleep, consider 1-2 capsules of this before bed.* Do not use it if you don't need to. This supports healthy histamine levels. You may want to get the Histamine Workbook as well as it is a fantastic guide for all things histamine. It's amazing how many things are related to histamine - including headaches.

Serotonin Nutrients: if you struggle with headaches, it may be low serotonin as well especially if also experiencing waking up in the night too often, low mood, periodic constipation, impatient or obsessive. Serotonin Nutrients supports healthy serotonin levels.* Take 1 capsule as needed.

Gallbladder Nutrients: a congested liver and gallbladder can really mess up many aspects of our health including sleep, skin, hormones, histamine, microbiome, moods, digestion to name a few. Support healthy bile production and bile flow by taking 2 capsules before dinner.*

I also recommend reading Dirty Genes. It's the place to start when it comes to genetics.

I don't want you focusing on your genetics right now as that's too focused. Needle in the haystack. Let's get your foundation and basics in place first.

Too many focus on the genetics first and get frustrated for years only to realize they should have focused on the basics first. I want to save you that experience.

Hello wondering what the difference between 2 DAO supplements where one says 10,000 HDU and the other one says 20,000 HDU? Both say 4.2 mg porcine kidney

Im not sure. I only know our DAO product. There are a few out there and I’m not sure of their quality or effectiveness.

Hi Dr Lynch, I would like to purchase this product for my 11-year old daughter. Will you please advise whether / at what dosage this will be safe to use for her age / weight?

It is safe at this amount.

What you want to watch for - or ask - is to make sure she is still having healthy bowel movements every day.

Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme supports healthy histamine levels in the gut.* If taking it with high histamine, that's great. If her histamine levels drop too low, she could experience constipation.

I also recommend ProBiota HistaminX and take 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy histamine levels.*

This is a more long term solution while Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme is more immediate but not long lasting.

Hi Dr.Lynch i resently saw your older videos on youtube and i sometimes have some sleep issues i think due to histamine and you said best for this is histamine block plus but it insnt in her eanymore. What happened to this product and you maybe know what i can do instead?

We changed the names to make things easier to understand for people.

What you're looking for is Histamine Nutrients - take 1-2 capsules before bed to support healthy histamine levels and a healthy sense of calm.*

Dr. Lynch- what might be a reason I reacted badly to this product? Heart palpitations, chest tightness, and a surge of what felt like adrenaline in my body. As far as I know, I don't have an allergy to pork. Thanks.

My thought is because your DAO enzyme is producing hydrogen peroxide and histamine metabolites that you aren't able to break down.

I recommend switching to Histamine Nutrients. Take 1 capsule of this with food.

I bet you could combine taking Histamine Nutrients x 1 capsule along with 1 capsule of Histamine Digest soon DAO Enzyme.

Try first taking Histamine Nutrients instead and see how that supports you. It should do the trick.

I'd also take ProBiota HistaminX - 1 capsule - after dinner - to support a healthy histamine level in your microbiome.*

Just want to know how to start the histamine products. I want to start with o e product at a time. Have trouble with bloating and gas and food intolerances. Can’t seem to lose weight. Please advise

I'd start with Gallbladder Nutrients first along with our Digestive Enzymes.

Start with taking 2 capsules of Gallbladder Nutrients before dinner.

Then, then following day, I'd take 2 capsules of Gallbladder Nutrients before lunch and then 2 capsules before dinner OR take all 4 capsules before dinner.

Gallbladder Nutrients is key to support a healthy digestive system by producing healthy amounts of bile.* This is foundational and most people aren't aware how important this is.

You want to have healthy bowel movements that are easy to pass, well formed and sink.

You may need more capsules of Gallbladder Nutrients some days and less on others.

The more fatty foods or the more you eat, the more capsules of Gallbladder Nutrients you need.

I'd also support your digestion by taking a capsule of Digestive Enzymes. Take 1 capsule with each meal.

Question about the Histamine Digest: since it is derived from pork kidney, is it high in copper? I have copper overload and need to avoid high copper. Thanks very much.

It is not high in copper no.

It is the DAO enzyme itself.
