Question Answer
Would this be okay for a woman who has COMT SNP? I thought it was a phytoestrogen.

Hi Trisha

Ashwagandha is not a phytoestrogen. It’s an adaptogen.

Adaptogens are fantastic for individuals who struggle with persistent mental stress as they support a healthy response to stressors specifically cortisol.

Having a COMT SNP doesn’t dictate what supplements you can or can’t use. Instead, SNPs identify vulnerabilities which can increase or decrease one’s susceptibility towards various things.

A COMT SNP can increase or decrease one’s vulnerability to increased estrogen. Depends on which SNP.

If one is looking for something to support a healthy response to stressors specifically cortisol, my favorite supplement is Stress Nutrients. This has ashwagandha in it along with additional adaptogens and adrenal supportive nutrients.

I have barely any cortisol in the morning, then high cortisol at lunch, dinner and bedtime. When should I be taking this supplement?

Hi Megan -

I'd instead look at some others that also have Ashwagandha in it but not just that.

Consider:

  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast
  • Phosphatidyl Serine: 1 capsule with lunch and 1 with dinner
  • Stress Nutrients: 3 capsules with your protein based breakfast

This way you're supporting healthy cortisol in the morning and all throughout the day with the other two supplements.

Make sure you're eating protein with each meal, limiting caffeine and identify mental and physical stressors - then work to reduce them.

Hello Elizma, Thank you so much for your prompt response! Regarding taking Ashwagandha, what is a safe dose to take at both bedtime and in the morning? Also, regarding Magnesium, what dose would be considered safe to take at bedtime? And would it be safe to take this in conjunction with Inositol, Apigenin and Ashwagandha at bedtime? Thank you very much in advance for your help!

A pleasure :)

Safety doses of Ashwagandha are reported at up to 1250 mg/day for 6 months.

Seeking Health Ashwagandha is 467 mg per 1 capsule. So, I would say that 1 capsule morning and night should be fine.

Mnesium's ideal dosage is around 300 - 600 mg (elemental) per day. You can safely take this amount with inositol, apigenin, and ashwagandha at bedtime.

Is it safe to take this in conjunction with Inositol and Apigenin at bedtime? I take Inositol and Apigenin to help with sleep. I experience anxiety during the day and at times, racing thoughts at night. Thank you in advance for your help!

Yes, you can take Ashwagandha in conjunction with Inositol and Apigenin at bedtime.

You can also try Ashwagandha during the day and see if it helps with your anxiety.

Consider Optimal Magnesium as well. Higher levels of magnesium are associated with better sleep and feelings of calm.*

I have high cortisol at night. Should I take Ashwagandha or Phosphatidyl Serine with Optimal Magnesium and Gut Nutrients at Bedtime? I wake up several times at night. Consider:
  • Phosphatidyl Serine: 1 capsule before bed
  • Optimal Magnesium: 1 capsule before bed
  • Stress Nutrients: take 3 capsules in the morning with breakfast. This day time support contains ashwagandha and other adaptogens which will support healthy cortisol levels.*

This combination is quite supportive.

My daughter and I have been using Optimal Sleep supplement successfully for about 1 year now without any side effect after we stopped using melatonin. We are disappointed that Optimal Sleep has been discountinued after the available stock is gone. Based on my own self observation and evaluaton for my daughter and I, we cannot use ashwagandha by itself (N.D has prescribed us ashwagandha to no success). I believe that the B-vitamins, magnesium, zinc, chromin, Phosphatidyl Serine all help in having no negative side effect using ashwagandha in this Optimal Sleep supplement. When the Optimal Sleep supplement is no longer available, I could buy the ashwanghanda, chromin and zinc supplements, individually from Seeking Health (it'll be a lot of capsule to swollow every night just to get the Optimal Sleep effect but we are willing to take them for quality sleep). However, I cannot find the very low dosage of B-vitamins and Phosphatidyl Serine anywhere in the market, including Amazon, even the Seeking Health Phosphatidyl Serine dosage by itself is higher that the dosage in Optimal Sleep supplement. Could you please let me know how or where I can obtain the lower dosages of B-vitamins and phosphyserine? Thank you.

I hear you.

I wish the Sleep I and II supplements were more popular - they just were not selling that well.

The only way I know is to buy the ingredients separately and mix them yourself roughly. It's far from ideal.

Have you considered using Stress Nutrients in the morning with breakfast and either Histamine Nutrients before bed or Serotonin Nutrients before bed?

Optimal Sleep supported healthy serotonin -> melatonin and Serotonin Nutrients does the same thing.*

I recently had hormones tested and cortisol is extremely high in the morning. I have really high anxiety in the morning but seems to level out through the day. I tried stress nutrients but couldn’t tolerate it. I thought I would try just one adaptation herb. I had a baby in October 2023 and had to go on a high dose of prednisone right after for 6 weeks from a severe flare of my colitis. I had continue with it til my insurance approved my biologic stelara injections. I noticed the anxiety and feeling fatigued a month after I finished the prednisone and no longer was on it. I watched Dr Lynch’s video on adrenal cortex but he says if you are more in a fight/flight stage you need stress nutrients but I tried it and couldn’t tolerate it. I’m sensitive to things which could be my mthfr- gene and the fact I do have ulcerative colitis and how I absorb things. I usually try a small amount of a supplement at first to see if I can tolerate it. I am working with a therapist for my anxiety and doing things like meditations, walking and healthy diet to try to get my balance back. I feel like I need something to help support my body supplement wise. I’m having a difficult time to find something that I can tolerate and my Doctor said if I could find something that would be a good support but not to stress over things that don’t work because it keeps me in a loop of stressing out the nervous system. I haven’t ordered just wanted to get some advice before ordering. Thanks I ordered the stress nutrients a think a month ago and just couldn’t tolerate it

If cortisol is high in the morning, I would look at Phosphatidyl Serine.

Phosphatidyl Serine taken 150 mg two times a day is what's researched to support healthy cortisol levels.

I'd consider 1 capsule in the morning upon waking and 1 capsule before bed.

I do not recommend using herbs if you're not tolerating Stress Nutrients.

Hello!! Can you take this with Stress Nutrients? My husband has a high stress job and I thought this may help support his stress response. Also for me: Could I take them if so as a nursing mom? I have MTHFR and PAI1 4G/5G mutations and have found myself very stressed over nothing and anxious when I shouldn't be. I thought I was over methylated possibly during the pregnancy but now seem more anxious that I backed off my extra folate and b12. Would this help me also? Thank you in advance? Chelsie

You can, yes - but do you need to? I don't think so.

I think Stress Nutrients should suffice.

However, if not strong enough, then I'd lean on Lithium Orotate and take 1 capsule in the morning before a a high stress event as it supports healthy stress levels.*

You may take Stress Nutrients or Ashwagandha as a nursing mother, yes.

I'd consider taking Gallbladder Nutrients - 2 capsules before dinner - for you. Pregnancy and breastfeeding is demanding on your liver and gallbladder so supporting it is likely needed here.

You may find also that you may do better with Optimal PC and taking 1 capsule after dinner to support healthy breastmilk - and - a healthy stress response.*

So I can take it safely with being on Citalopram 40MG?

You'll need to talk with your doctor about switching from Citalopram to Serotonin Nutrients.

You cannot take both. It's either one or the other.

Both will be way too much.

Serotonin Nutrients supports healthy serotonin levels while the medication keeps serotonin levels high in the brain.* So combined is way too powerful.

Dr. Lynch

I'm currently on citalopram 40MG for anxiety disorder and symptoms. I wanted to start taking something more natural to help as it seems that Citalopram isn't effective anymore since I've been on it for 18 years. What do you recommend? The mechanism of action for Citalopram is essentially a SSRI with some minor SNDI effects. This means it focuses on serotonin mostly with some effects on dopamine and norepinephrine.

I recommend supporting healthy serotonin levels by using Serotonin Nutrients. You may find that one capsule works well for you but you may need one capsule 2-3 times a day depending on the day.

I find the duration of Serotonin Nutrients lasts about 4 hours but everyone is different - and every day is different (some days are more stressful than others).

I'd also add Glutathione Plus Lozenge 1/2 a lozenge upon waking in the morning to support a healthy brain and healthy mood.* Low glutathione levels are associated with a number of neurotransmitter imbalances.

Hello. Could you please tell if I have MAOA G/G +/+...will ashwagandha help? I also have high serum dopamine levels will ashwagandha help to normalize it??? Thank you!!! Sincerely Bahodur Abdukholiqov!!! I am not sure which MAOA SNP that is without an rsid or alias - nor do I know which report you're referring to so I've no idea what the consequences are for this MAOA variant.

This MAOA variant - does it make the MAOA enzyme work faster? slower? no change at all? affect cofactor B2 binding? or ?

We don't react to our genetics by taking a supplement or seeing it as bad.

We look at our genetic variations and seek to understand the natural function of them with their variations. And then we ask - how much is it affecting me - if at all?

Since you are having high blood dopamine levels and want to support healthy levels, then I'd consider using a more complete formulation such as Stress Nutrients.

Take 3 capsules of Stress Nutrients to support a healthy response to stress (and thus normalize dopamine levels) in the morning and you should feel the effects last all day.*

Stress Nutrients has Ashwagandha in it- but also many other adaptogens and adrenal support.

Can you empty capsule out? Can’t take pills

Generally speaking, you will still get some benefit when taking an encapsulated supplement without the capsule. Some probiotics may lose their strength depending on your stomach acid level, and the strain of the probiotic. Dr. Lynch recommends the following practices when taking capsule contents without their capsule.

Take after a meal as this raises stomach acid pH and may prevent die off.
Get a spoonful of something smooth like apple sauce, place the powder on top, and cover with more smooth food.
Place in your mouth and swallow. Do not chew.
Take a sip or two of water to wash it down.
Do NOT mix in a smoothie or other beverage. You will lose the contents of the capsule to the side of the glass or blender.
