Adrenal Cortex Dr. Lynch product Q&AUpdated 5 days ago

.

Question Answer
Would this be ok to take at 36 weeks pregnant?

Hi Sylvie -

There is not enough research to say one way or another.

Typically, taking things which impact hormones is not suggested during pregnancy.

Consider:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and another serving later midday
  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge upon waking and another 1/2 lozenge midday
  • Acetyl L Carnitine: 1 capsule upon waking

These will support healthy energy levels.

I’ve been opening this capsule and mixing half with applesauce to take. I want to ease into it. It has helped my energy but is hurting my stomach to the point I’ve decided I can’t take it. Is it bad to open capsule and take this way? I wrote earlier that when I first got these I took a whole capsule and had bad stomach cramping. I do take with protein breakfast and Optimal Electrolyte. Thank you! Any advice? I also added glutathione lozenges.

Hi Julie -

I'm not sure why it's cramping your stomach.

I think we need to support your stomach lining with nutrients which support a healthy gut lining.*

Consider:

  • Gut Nutrients: 3 capsules upon waking and 3 capsules before bed to support a healthy gut lining.*
  • Adrenal Cortex: take 1/2 a capsule mixed on a bite of your food - don't use applesauce as that's acidic - use some of your protein based breakfast instead. You'll be taking this at least an hour after taking Gut Nutrients capsules.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: possibly use 1/2 a scoop vs a whole scoop and make sure you have this not with your breakfast but between food.

Hello, I am 48 years old and need some advice on what products I should try for my issues. I am homozygous for the 677 mthfr variant. My concerns: I have had eczema on an off my whole life on different parts of my body, but the last 10 years it's been on my eyelid. My eyes are now usually red, irritaed and watery most days and my vision has gotten worse. I feel like I've tried everything pharmaceutical and natural. Any advice? I just want my eyes to feel good again... I get an itchy scalp and other random itches throughout the day too. I am not overweight, but as hard as I try I can't seem to lose these last 15 pounds. Plus, I always feel bloated after meals. Lastly, I have a hard time getting and staying asleep. I am a very light sleeper. Thanks you in advance for any help...:)

Hi Amy -

I hear you.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Go 100% gluten-free and cow dairy free. I've been this way now for 20 years and have been eczema free since ;)
  • You can have goat dairy and many products are gluten free these days.
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1 lozenge upon waking and another 1/2 lozenge later in the day if needed. You'll know if you need it or not based on how your head feels.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving any time of day
  • Bile Nutrients: 2 to 4 capsules before dinner to support a healthy gut which is key for healthy skin.*
  • Digestive Enzymes: 2 capsules with meals
  • Histamine Digest: 1 capsule with meals
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Histamine Nutrients: 2 capsules before bed

This should help noticeably within the same day with continued noticeable improvements as the days go by. The onset of sleep, eyes and digestion will be the first things noticed.

I am 37. For the past 5 years, my body has stopped making sex hormones and I have been diagnosed with hypothalamic amenorrhea. I do not overexercise or undereat, so my body must be stressed in some way. I try to walk, rest when I need to reduce stress, and cut out caffeine. I've read dirty genes, I have a dirty MTHFR and dirty slow COMT. I take .025% estradiol patches and 200mg progesterone for my bone/cardiac health, but too much estradiol doesn't agree with me. My saliva cortisol test showed inverted results (slightly low in morning, high at night). I take cortisol lowering supps nightly (Phosphatidyl Serine, Magnesium Glycinate, and holy basil) at night, but still wake up a lot in the night. I drink optimal electrolyte daily in the morning. Can you recommend what else I can do to support my body in healing? I sauna, have tried coffee enemas, castor oil packs, RO water, balancing blood sugar, therapy and recently had iron infusions. I've taken adrenal cortex in the morning before but it makes me feel really tired in the afternoon, and I see that you recommend adrenal cortex more as needed, vs daily.

Hi Ashley -

I'd like you to work with a health professional to figure out why your body is stressed.

Consider working with ElizmaLambert.com as she's a great sleuth.

Consider:

  • Brain Nutrients Lozenge: 1/2 to 1 lozenge upon waking. You can take this after or before the Optimal Electrolyte. I'd consider another 1/2 to 1 later in the day if you feel you need it.
  • Acetyl L Carnitine: 1 capsule upon waking to support healthy energy throughout the day
  • Adrenal Cortex: let's try again 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: keep using this and possibly add in 1/4 tsp of additional salt.

Let's try this and see how you go.

I don't want to add too many variables.

Keep me posted.

I am 43 years old. I strength train 2 days a week and also run. I have completed 2 marathons. I am exhausted daily, difficult to get up in the morning, moody, frequent urination. I would like to try adrenal cortex. do you feel my symptoms align with adrenal fatigue ? i am hypothyroid as well

Hi Nikole -

Absolutely. You are the perfect candidate for Adrenal Cortex :)

Consider:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. Also add 1/4 tsp of additional salt to each cup as you need additional sodium.
  • Glutathione Plus: 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking
  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast
  • Pre-Workout Nutrients: 1 serving 30 minutes before you workout. This is non-stim and actually is designed to support healthy performance for your exercise.*
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Joint Nutrients: 1 capsule before bed

This should make a huge difference for you. ;)

Hello Dr. Lynch. Can Adrenal Cortex be taken together with desiccated thyroid medication on empty stomach? I have seen other products with much higher adrenal cortex amounts (upwards of 250mg per capsule). If I have very low cortisol, how many of your brand Adrenal Cortex are needed to get my AM cortisol level to high normal? I was thinking two capsules (100mg) taken with my thyroid medication. How many can be taken to achieve a good cortisol level?

Hi Michael -

You can take together yes and without food.

I'd consider taking 2 capsules but no more than that. Our adrenal cortex is quite potent and not much is needed.

Consider taking 2 capsules for a week and then go back down to 1 capsule.

You want to feel healthy energy, healthy mood and motivation without feeling irritable or difficulty falling asleep.*

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Thank you for the response, Dr. Lynch! Regarding the Glutathione Plus, are you saying to get the lozenge and take 1/2 a lozenge upon waking? Also, I'm very happy to see if the Joint Nutrient helps with my painful joints and pain that moves around the body. One day or week it's one spot and another day or week it's another. Thanks again.

Correct yes. I find that the glutathione in the morning really helps turn on the lights in the brain especially when combined with the Optimal Electrolyte.

Keep me posted on the Joint Nutrients - 1 capsule upon waking and 1 before bed - can be taken with the glutathione and electrolytes.

In health,

Hi! Thank you for your previous response to the problem I had with bowel and stomach cramping. I did take with a protein breakfast. My doctor sugggested I take with DAO. Do you think this will help? I restarted taking it by again opening the capsule and taking a third I seem to be fine at that level so far. My question is about only taking it for 5 days in a row. My adrenals and cortisol are both low, I have severe fatigue, exertion makes me out of breath. This product is helping. Is it ok to take every day if needed? I have MCAS and use a lot of your products and am getting better. Thank you!

Absolutely - go for it if you're low and use as needed.

There will be a time when you won't need it as much but it sounds like now is a time where you need it daily.

I don't think taking it with DAO would help.

I am honestly stumped why it would cause stomach cramping. I'll dig into this when I get a moment and see if there's a connection between local cortisol levels and stomach cramping.

Consider:

  • Gut Nutrients: 1-3 capsules upon waking to support a healthy gut
  • If you're nervous about taking too many ingredients as found in Gut Nutrients, then consider using Zinc Carnosine with breakfast and also with dinner to support a healthy gut.*
  • Bile Nutrients: 1 to 4 capsules before dinner

My doctor prescribed progesterone. I am 2.5 weeks until no cycle for 1 year. Estradiol 218, Progesterone 0.3. No hot flashes at the moment. I have many dirty gene symptoms, and I believe I have most of the top 7 born dirty. Been unwell for over 11 years. Currently treating CIRS and SIBO. Lots of issues including low cortisol in the morning and too high in the afternoon. I'm always tired - I have a hard time falling asleep and also wake up between 3:00am and 5:00am - too early. Do I take the progesterone, or should I work on cleaning dirty genes first and see if I need it? Dr. is saying the progesterone will help sleep. Also, will the Adrenal Cortex help me to have energy during the day?

You're both right.

You need to support your dirty genes and your doctor is right that progesterone supports sleep.

Let's start working on some basics:

  • Glutathione Plus: 1/2 upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking and another 1-2 during the day
  • Joint Nutrients: 1 capsule in the morning upon waking and 1 before bed. I believe this will support a healthy inflammatory response.*
  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast and take only if you wake up too early and too tired as it supports healthy energy levels.* If you wake rested and sleep through the night, don't take it.
  • reduce caffeine intake
  • Stress Nutrients: take 3 in the morning to support a healthy response to stress so your afternoon cortisol levels will be balanced.*
  • Bile Nutrients: 2 to 4 capsules before dinner to support a healthy microbiome in your small intestine - high levels are associated with SIBO.*
  • Histamine Nutrients: 2 capsules before bed to support healthy onset of sleep
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner

This should significantly help you and you should notice improvements within 1 day.

Dr. Lynch

I started taking the adrenal support and started slow with only a third of a capsule for three days, one half capsule for two days and then a full capsule. I experienced strong stomach cramping when I took the full capsule. Do you have any advice? I advise my doctor and she is having me start again with just a third of a capsule.

That's interesting.

I have not heard this before.

Make sure you are taking this after breakfast - and a protein based breakfast as well - meat, eggs or a protein powder based smoothie.

Consider:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking
  • Adrenal Cortex: take this on an as-needed basis - talk with your doctor about this - I would not use it on days where you wake up feeling ready to go in a good mood and good energy. Skip it. Only on days you feel you need to support healthy energy, take 1/2 a capsule after breakfast. This is a very effective supplement that I use on and off depending on the situation. I rarely use it more than 5 days in a row.

Hello...I purchased several products: Adrenal Cortex, Optimal Magnesium, Optimal Fish Oil, Optimal Electrolyte, Vitamin D3 + K2, ProBiota HistaminX, & B-Complex Plus. I purchased all these products hoping it will help with my extreme fatigue-Hashimoto, Celiac, MTHFR, & histamine intolerance. My Question: What time of day should I take these supplements and are there some that shouldn't be taken together?

Here are some things to consider:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving upon waking in the morning. You can take this within 20 minutes of your thyroid meds.
  • Adrenal Cortex: 1 capsule upon waking - on the days you feel you need healthy energy support in the morning due to waking up frequently, being very tired or waking up to pee a few times.*
  • B Complex Plus: take 1 with a protein based breakfast. This may worsen your histamine intolerance due to the folate and B12 - but it may also be fine. Keep this in mind. If it worsens your histamine intolerance, stop and switch to B Minus.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Vitamin D3+K2: 1 capsule after dinner
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal Magnesium: 1 capsule before bed

For the celiac, consider adding in before bed:

  • Gut Nutrients: 3 to 5 capsules before bed to support a healthy gut lining.*

Will do! I will pause those supplements. What time of day should I take the other supplements?

Before bed ;)

Thanks for the quick follow-up. I was trying to be comprehensive for you, but I understand it was a lot of information. Would it be okay to add phosphatidylserine back to lower cortisol? Or are there any other Seeking Health supplements that might be beneficial? I know you previously mentioned Lithium Orotate. Which would be better for improving sleep duration?

Phosphatidyl Serine and Lithium Orotate both would be supportive for healthy sleep, yes.*

I would seriously consider pausing the supplements mentioned as well.

Hi Dr. Lynch, I’m reaching out as my sleep has significantly worsened—I slept less than an hour last night and have been averaging 3 hours per night. To refresh your memory, I’m a 71-year-old female with low estradiol, normal progesterone, low DHEA, and low-normal testosterone. I’ve started using progesterone (wild yam) cream and have elevated cortisol throughout the day (morning, noon, evening, and night). I have slow COMT, MTHFR, and NOS3. I also noticed, that I am super irritable lately. I’m also being treated for mold and candida, and I do not have sleep apnea. What can I do? Anything that should be changed? My current supplement schedule is as follows: UPON WAKING: 1x Optimal Electrolytes 1/2 tsp Hawthorn 8 AM - Breakfast: 2x Nystatin 1x Sporanox 1x Welchol (M, W, F) 1x Homocysteine Nutrients (Tu, Th, Sa, Su) 1x L-Carnitine 2x DHEA 10 mg 1x Adrenal Cortex (*take if waking up frequently) 1x Ashwagandha 12 PM - Lunch: 2x Nystatin 2x ProOmega/CoQ10 1x Vitamin D 1x Niacin 1/2 tsp Vitamin C 1x Taurine 5 PM - Dinner: 4x Gallbladder Nutrients 1/2 tsp Vitamin C After Dinner: 1x Liver Nutrients 1-2x Saccharomyces Boulardii 8 PM - Bedtime: 1x Optimal Magnesium 3x Gut Nutrients 1x Lithium Orotate 1-2x Histamine Nutrients

DHEA can increase cortisol which may increase irritability - and so can Adrenal Cortex.

Consider pausing DHEA and Adrenal Cortex.

Additionally, there may be other things that I'm not getting here with a paragraph of information. I recommend consulting with one of our health professionals. Elizma Lambert at elizmalambert.com is great

Is this pregnancy safe? Low DHEA and borderline low T on Dutch test (taken pre pregnancy) with moderate/ severe fatigue before becoming pregnant and now even worse with pregnancy.

While I do believe Adrenal Cortex may be safe during pregnancy as it supports healthy cortisol levels, I do not feel I should say go for it and take it.

I suspect that there may be other factors at play here that should be looked into.

Anemia is one - low iron and/or low vitamin B12 or folate.

What I'd like you to consider is:

  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 to 3 servings a day. Have 1 serving immediately upon waking up in the morning and another 1 to 2 servings later in the day.
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenges: take 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking
  • Optimal Prenatal: take 3 capsules with breakfast, 3 with lunch and 2 with an afternoon snack if needing more healthy energy support midday.*
  • Iron Chewable: 2 chewables after dinner and check your levels with a lab test as well.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Probiota HistaminX: 1 capsule after dinner

With this support, I suspect you will feel significantly better as it is quite comprehensive.

Keep me posted.

I had a question about your adrenal cortex formula: How does the cortex differ from whole adrenal glandulars and how does it differ from PMG? Thanks! I appreciate your help :-)

The adrenal cortex is the outer region and also the largest part of an adrenal gland, responsible for multiple adrenal hormones such as cortisol and other corticosteroids. They are responsible for your glucose metabolism and immune responses.

The adrenal medulla, which is the inner part of the adrenal gland, controls hormones such as NE (norepinephrine) and adrenaline (epinephrine).

PMG is the nucleoprotein extracted from fresh frozen adrenal glands. This is typically used when the adrenals have 'burned out'.

To be honest, it depends on how your adrenal gland is functioning on what you need. And we don't know that.

Elizma Lambert (ElizmaLambert.com)

Thank you, Dr. Lynch. I have a follow-up question. What is the difference between orotate and phosphatidylserine? I bought two bottles of serine last week. Do I need to avoid that? I have one bottle of ashwagandha left. Should I switch to the stress nutrients or finish the ashwagandha first? If so, would I take that at breakfast too? Is it okay that I am taking DHEA 10 mg at Breakfast?

Lithium orotate and P Serine are very different.

Lithium orotate supports healthy dopamine and serotonin levels.*

Phosphatidyl Serine supports healthy cortisol levels.*

DHEA supports healthy production of various hormones.* Some people do better with DHEA at night before bed and others do better in the morning. I find that I do best taking it at night.

You can alternate between the Ashwagandha and Stress Nutrients to see which one has a better effect on you.

You would take those at breakfast.

I am 71 year old female. I have low estradiol, normal progesterone, low DHEA, low-normal Testosterone. I have started a progesterone (wild yam) cream. I have elevated cortisol morning, noon, evening, and night. I have split sleep, waking up 4-5X per night. I never feel rested. I wake up and have to pee. I have a slow COMT, MTHFR, and NOS3. I am being treated for mold and candida. Would Adrenal Cortex work? I really want to sleep! I appreciate the help/

I would not use Adrenal Cortex in this case.

High cortisol all day is depleting your DHEA and thus stealing the ability to make estradiol and testosterone.

Instead, I'd consider:

  • Stress Nutrients: take 3 capsules with breakfast to support a healthy response to stress.*
  • Lithium Orotate: take 1 capsule before bed to support healthy sleep.*
  • Histamine Nutrients: take 2 capsules before bed to support healthy sleep onset.*
  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1 lozenge upon waking to support healthy mold detoxification.*
  • Optimal Electrolytes: drink 1 serving in the morning upon waking and another in the afternoon to support healthy hydration.* Low electrolytes and high cortisol increase urination at night.

Follow back in a couple weeks. You should notice significant improvements.

Hi there I wonder if you can help me please. I’ve been using the Adrenal Cortex at very small dose (emptying the capsule) and I am finding the response I get to it is very intense. I’m getting weird sensations in my body for several hours. Can you explain why this might be please? I have histamine intolerance (MCAS) and the POTS so wondered if it was side to that?! Thanks 🙏

It sounds like Adrenal Cortex may be too stimulating for you, or that your cortisol levels were high to begin with and that Adrenal Cortex amplified this.

Too much cortisol can stimulate mast cell activation and histamine release.

Stress Nutrients may be a better option for you as it helps to balance adrenal function rather than stimulate it.

Let us know how you go :)

Regards,
Elizma Lambert (ElizmaLambert.com)

Hi, could you take the adrenal cortex along with the stress nutrients?

Yes you may and it could be a useful combination.

Consider:

  • Adrenal Cortex: take 1 capsule with a protein breakfast to support healthy cortisol levels.* Use only if you are experiencing dizzy upon standing, waking up to pee at night, waking up really tired in the morning, changing time zones. If you are not feeling these, then do not take it.
  • Stress Nutrients: take 3 capsules with breakfast to support a healthy response to stressful moments.* This is best taken daily as it contains herbs which work best when used consistently. It can also be used intermittently at moments.

Hi Dr. Lynch, Started taking this on your recommendation to another question I had re: histamines & poor recovery after working out, consistently low potassium. Have been taking histamine nutrients, optimal electrolytes, glutathione lozenge. Added pre workout nutrients and adrenal cortex. After just a few days of adrenal cortex I felt really good in the mornings. We were on a road trip and did a few days camping and I continued to take it. I did have coffee in the morning too because it was very cold in the mornings while camping and I wanted something warm. I did not feel agitated after but my Oura said my body was physiologically under stress for a good chunk of those days (like 6-7 hours and here I thought I’d be relaxed while camping and in nature). Fast forward a few days and I’m back home and feeling fatigued throughout much the day. Waking up tired so I’m still taking the adrenal cortex, glutathione and having optimal electrolytes in the mornings. HRV is lower than normal and lowest HR at night is mid to upper 50s instead of upper40s/low50s. -My question is, did I take the adrenal cortex more than I should have given there were days I felt good in the morning and still took it? Despite not feeling agitated emotionally could it have been too much? Should I continue taking it since now I am feeling sluggish in the morning or take a break for a few days? Other things I’m considering that may have an impact: -despite being cold in the mornings, it grew quite hot during the day camping and I’m unsure if I was a little dehydrated at some point -returning home=more EMFs -I felt as though my histamines were in check and so I started slowly introducing some histamine foods. But then usually I would get unsure of myself and take a histamine nutrient or histamine digest. Wondering if there’s a chance I took the histamine supps for just a little too long as well as I understand low histamines can also cause fatigue. However, I wonder if the opposite is true and maybe introducing histamine foods is causing my higher resting HR and some stress. How do I know when I’m truly at the right balance? Thanks as always, Carly Other factors

Thorough. Thank you.

Histamine can definitely increase a higher resting HR as can cortisol.

Health is a moving target. I'd focus on how you feel more than worrying about a lower HRV. While it's good to see that - and see your resting HR low in the evenings, I'd focus more on how you feel.

Keep experimenting. The key is changing - ideally - 1 variable at a time. If you change multiple at once, then it's tough.

Key things to support a better HRV:

  • WiFi turned off at night and phone in airplane mode
  • wear blue blocking glasses an hour before bed
  • go to bed earlier
  • have your room colder
  • don't eat within an hour or more before bed
  • exercise during the day
  • no caffeine
  • no alcohol
  • don't overeat
  • nose breathe
  • don't overtrain, overexercise
  • possibly mouth taping if you are mouth breathing at night

For warm drinks:

  • consider herbal tea, hot cocoa, soup broths, dandelion tea, chicory root tea (tastes like coffee)

Supplements:

  • Adrenal Cortex: sounds like you know when to use it and at this point I'd stay on it on those days needed - and skip when you're feeling good. Perhaps you kept taking it while camping and you took it too long. If you wake up rested, skip it.
  • Histamine Digest: take when you're eating higher histamine foods and drinks to support healthy histamine levels.*
  • Histamine Nutrients: 1 to 2 capsules before bed
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule before bed - foundational
  • ProBiota HistaminX: 1 capsule before bed - foundational
  • Glutathione Lozenge: take 1/2 to 1 lozenge upon waking if you feel your head a bit heavy and slow to support healthy brain function.* Otherwise, if you wake feeling clear, skip it. You can also take it later in the day if the fog rolls in.

I don't see a multivitamin. Consider Multivitamin One MF and take 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast 2-3 days a week and skip the other days.

This should help a lot.

Keep me posted.

Hey there! I've seen some articles discussing how adrenal cortex has some risks and would love to hear your thoughts on that. I would also love more information on using this product while breastfeeding.

Any ingredient has risks and hugs and water have risks.

When used properly, Adrenal Cortex is a fantastic ingredient.

It's best used when needed and paused when not. That's the case for most ingredients.

Using this product while breastfeeding is just fine and makes sense as mothers are quite tired at this time and need support.

Consider:

  • Use 1 capsule of Adrenal Cortex with breakfast on mornings where you feel you need support.
  • Do NOT use Adrenal Cortex in the mornings if you slept well and feel good in the morning.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Hi Dr. Lynch, I had read that some doctors don't recommend adrenal cortex supplements because they could cause issues with the HPA axis and shut down the adrenals after taking them, making adrenal dysfunction worse. Would that be the case in someone who has very low DHEA, low testosterone, and low progesterone? Can taking a DHEA supplement and adrenal cortex together be a problem? Thank you!

I disagree with this statement.

Taking adrenal cortex will not shut down the adrenals. The whole premise of using adrenal cortex is to take pressure off the tired adrenals which is done by supporting them with healthy levels of bovine derived adrenal cortex.*

Taking DHEA and Adrenal Cortex together may be supportive in this situation and it may be unnecessary.

It all depends on how your body uses the DHEA.

We cannot dictate how our body uses DHEA. It can go to cortisol, testosterone, estrogen or progesterone or all of them.

You don't want to be making too much cortisol.

If using DHEA and Adrenal Cortex together, I'd add in Stress Nutrients to provide a healthy response to stress.*

Hi Dr. Lynch! I bought this on your recommendation as I have low cortisol all day except for before bed. I also have suspected MCAS. I took this in the morning with breakfast and felt so heavy and tired all day, I could barely move my limbs. Then I barely slept for three days straight until I took some over the counter H1 and H2 blockers. Is this a possible reaction to this? I am terrified to try again to make sure, but I also kind of want to since I really wanted the effects of this product so that I could start working out earlier in the day (and just generally be more productive/active during the day)!! Any advice welcome!

That is definitely an interesting response for someone using Adrenal Cortex if they have low cortisol.

I believe you did have that response. I just don't know why you would.

Typically, when one with low cortisol takes Adrenal Cortex to support healthy cortisol levels, they feel good.*

I'm wondering if your breakfast was not agreeing with you.

Low cortisol is also going to increase MCAS and healthy cortisol levels are going to reduce MCAS.

I recommend working with a health professional to see what could be going on.

Consider working with Elizma Lambert.

Thank you for taking time to answer these questions! I’ve read through so many of them and they have been very helpful! 40 year old female, recently tested for ADD and have been taking adderall. I love the energy and mood lift that it gives me but can’t deal with the palpitations, crash and extreme irritability when coming off of it. I’ve read if I can feel the medicine I may not actually be ADD. Which is possible, I’ve never had symptoms (that I realized) until adulthood and have been going through a long legal battle the last 5 years that has been has drained me in more ways than one. But since the adderall makes me feel happier I’m assuming I have low dopamine? Am I oversimplifying it? Haven’t done any genetic testing. I’m needing help with extreme fatigue, I wake up tired and slump in the afternoons, no motivation, disorganized thoughts, negative thoughts, no clarity, poor sleep (wake up at 3-4am), stress and worry. Emotional and irritable before my period, regular but have always had painful periods and PMS. I drink coffee in the mornings but would love to quit. I’m thinking I need adrenal cortex, brain nutrients, dopamine nutrients, and Serotonin nutrients. Lithium? Glutathione? What do you suggest?

You're correct in your assumption that Adderall is increasing your dopamine. It does.

You're on the right track.

Consider:

  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge first thing upon waking.
  • Optimal Electrolyte: sip 1 glass in filtered water after waking and before breakfast.
  • Adrenal Cortex: with a protein based breakfast of eggs, meat or whey protein, take 1 capsule ONLY on the mornings where you feel you need additional support (woke up way too early, really beat) as this supports healthy cortisol levels.* Skip it on mornings you feel good and slept through the night for the most part.
  • Dopamine Nutrients: take 1-2 capsules if needing additional support beyond what you've experienced. Some days you'll need it and other days not. Do NOT take this around day 8 to day 15 or so when you're experiencing PMS. You will likely need it a couple days after starting menses and need it up until your usual times where PMS start kicking in - then you stop it.
  • DIM+I3C: take 1 capsule around day 8 to day 15 or so - when you feel you're going to experience the PMS, take it a few days prior and continue through a couple days past the start of menses - then stop.
  • Lithium Orotate: you may need 1 capsule during the days you're experiencing PMS as this supports a healthy mood.* Do not take it otherwise. Well, you may also want to take 1 capsule before bed to support healthy onset of sleep if you're staring at the ceiling.* Otherwise, don't take it at night.
  • Fish Oil: 1 capsule after dinner
  • Optimal Magnesium: 1 capsule before bed

Start here and check in how you're doing. We may check a lot of boxes off and may have some residual clean up ;)

I've never considered adrenals in relation to my neurotransmitters, but learning about the link with dopamine is eye opening. I've done the Strategene test and have SLOW MAO, COMT, DDC, DBH and TPH2 - the interesting part is I have fast TH (dopamine synthesis) and dopamine reuptake/transporters. I thought I needed more tyrosine, to feed my "fast" TH gene and support the slow DDC/DBH - but I think this is probably why my anxiety has gotten worse (despite having had some great results with it) - as it seems like dopamine is just getting sucked back to the presynaptic neuron too quickly and creating toxic dopamine? This may be why Vyvanse had a great effect on me (tried it once) as it forced all that stuck dopamine out of the presynaptic neuron... I'm awaiting an adult ADHD diagnosis, but I think this is confirmation for me, but don't want to go on these kinda stims anyway. So long story short, is Adrenal Cortex going to help me with this issue (I've read some great results) or is it going to added to the overflowing bucket of dopamine ? Thanks! 💖

Your thinking is great.

Genetic testing is great but it's so much more with the epigenetics as you know.

Adrenals support cortisol, norepi and epi. Dopamine converts to norepi and epi.

Anxiety can get worse from low levels of both and also high levels of both.

It's a sweet spot.

Vyvanse actually increases dopamine and norepi in the brain as it blocks the reuptake of it so these stay in your brain longer.

Consider:

  • Adrenal Cortex: in the mornings that you wake up tired, woke up to pee at night or way too early or get dizzy when you stand up, consider taking 1 capsule to support healthy cortisol levels.* Do not take it otherwise.
  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking to support a healthy clean head with healthy energy.*
  • Dopamine Nutrients: 1 to 2 capsules with a protein based breakfast to support healthy dopamine levels.*
  • Optimal Electrolyte: sip 1-2 servings a day

Try each of these by itself first - then add as needed on the days you need them and skip on days you feel good.

Watch your caffeine intake especially if taking these supplements - and you likely will feel good without it.

Hello Dr Lynch, I would like to know if your product Adrenal cortex is suitable for someone that have very low morning cortisol, however the evening cortisol is high to the point that it causes severe insomnia. Also the person has histamine intolerance or what looks lately rather mass cell activation syndrom. Thank you in advance for your time! Anelia Draganova Email: [email protected]

Very good points.

Consider:

  • identifying what is the trigger for you to have high evening cortisol - what is triggering it? there are people or activities or movies or something that is spiking it. Find them and resolve.
  • Adrenal Cortex: take this in the morning with a protein based breakfast to support healthy cortisol levels in the morning.*
  • Phosphatidyl Serine: take 1 capsule with dinner to support healthy cortisol levels at night.*
  • Ashwagandha: take 1 capsule at night to support healthy cortisol levels at night.*
  • Lithium Orotate: 1 capsule at night before bed to support healthy sense of calm.*
  • Brain Nutrients: 1/2 to 1 lozenge in the morning upon waking
  • Optimal Electrolyte: 1 serving sipped over time in the morning - and likely needs additional salt given the adrenal fatigue - consider adding 1/4 tsp of salt (500 mg of sodium).

It makes sense that this person has mast cell activation syndrome based on the stressors and low cortisol.

Consider additionally:

  • Make sure they are nose breathing vs mouth breathing
  • EMF and Wifi is turned off at night and phone on airplane mode
  • no alcohol in the evening
  • no caffeine in the morning or afternoon - use Brain Nutrients and Optimal Electrolyte instead to support healthy energy levels.*

Can it help my bpdy come than aftjene a chok and make my adrenaline more normal again and my body is tense So when i relax it in bed ot sometimes makes many viration ticks

If you are stressed and higher levels of adrenaline, consider:

  • Breath: focus on slowing down your breathing through your nose - not your mouth. slow down your breathing and make it deeper.
  • Lithium Orotate: take 1 capsule as needed to support a healthy mood and healthy relaxation.*
  • Phosphatidyl Serine: take 1 capsule before bed IF your cortisol levels are increased to support healthy cortisol levels.*
  • DIM+I3C: IF you are feeling more stressed out during ovulation, it may be due to increased estrogen increasing dopamine levels. Consider 1 capsule on around day 8 to day 15 to support healthy estrogen levels which supports healthy mood and healthy dopamine levels.*
  • Histamine Nutrients: high levels of histamine can contribute to feelings of high adrenaline and irritability. If you are high histamine, consider taking 2 capsules to support healthy histamine levels before bed to support a healthy onset of sleep.*

These should significantly help.

Please read each one carefully so you know if and when you need to use them. You should not use them all every day - only as needed.

Hi! I have been off hormonal birth control for 9 months and have not yet had my period return. I have high DHEA and elevated testosterone levels and am currently working with a functional healthcare provider to address potential PCOS. Previously, I took a methyl B complex and PCOpx, but I had to stop after about 3 weeks due to side effects such as headaches, dizziness, swelling, trouble sleeping, and acne. Now, I am taking EstroDIM, along with vitamin D3 & K2 and fish oils. I was looking at the adrenal cortex to see if it may help with the high DHEA levels. Could you advise if this product, or any of your other products, might help with these symptoms or support my hormonal balance and overall health in this context?

Hi Malorey -

I am thinking taking Adrenal Cortex is not a good idea if you have high DHEA. I may be wrong but it seems like it wouldn't be a good idea.

If you're experiencing higher mental stress, I'd consider Stress Nutrients to support healthy stress levels and healthy cortisol levels.*

I'd also support your liver and gallbladder by using 2 capsules of Gallbladder Nutrients before dinner to support healthy bile production and bile flow.*

You may also find that taking 1 capsule of Calcium D Glucarate with the 2 capsules of Gallbladder Nutrients is also supportive of healthy hormone detoxification.*

A sluggish liver and gallbladder lead to imbalanced hormones.

I took 1 adrenal cortex every day for 2 weeks. I felt more calm, relaxed and didnt feel like my blood sugar was out of wack. However I noticed that I began getting extremely irritable and angry for no reason. I also noticed my blood pressure was dropping. What could be the cause of this?

I recommend pulsing this supplement - using only a few days a week vs daily.

If you are experiencing an unusual response to stressors, consider Stress Nutrients and take in the morning.

That said, if you reduce the amount you are taking of Adrenal Cortex, you may not need Stress Nutrients.

However, some people combine the use of Adrenal Cortex with Stress Nutrients as it supports healthy energy levels that you are looking for while also maintaining a healthy response to stress.*

Blood pressure levels may drop if one's stress levels are reduced.

Make sure you are staying hydrated. Consider Optimal Electrolyte and sip it slowly over time - do not chug it.

If you are struggling from tired adrenals, consider adding a pinch or two of extra salt to your glass of Optimal Electrolyte - or just put more salt on your food.

Every time I start the adrenal cortex I get a sore mouth. I believe that I need some supplement to help . Four years ago they removed my left adrenal gland because I had kidney cancer. I currently have PMR and have been taking a steroid for it 7.5 mg. This dosage has not helped greatly vs. 15 mg. They try to taper you off the steroids. This has made my pain worse as they taper. This is the reason I think that have some adrenal insufficiency. Many years I had a saliva test and it showed that I was deficient. Any thoughts on what to do?

I am not sure of the connection between Adrenal Cortex and a sore mouth.

My thinking is maybe the supplement combined with the steroids is causing a weakened immune response contributing to mouth ulcers and sores.

I'd consider using Immune Intensive as an oral wash after breakfast. Use just 1/2 a serving, put in your mouth, rinse around and then swallow.

Do this a few days a week. I suspect that should help quite a bit.

I'd also add in ProBiota HistaminX after dinner to support a healthy microbiome.*

I have good thoughts about this - should help.

Keep me posted with a follow up question should you have one.

I have MAOA rs 6323 with risk allele G and my result is GG. Does it mean I'm fast or slow MAOA? I have trouble with sleep and daytime anxiety. My dopamine blood level is high ! What you can recommend? Im reading your book Dirty Genes in Russian and trying to learn as much as I can ! Sincerely Bahodur Abdukholiqov

A MAOA rs6323 variant means it functions faster than a typical, no variant enzyme. In this case, genetically you burn through serotonin faster than those without the variant.

Low serotonin levels are associated with anxiety and difficulty staying asleep (but falling asleep is fine).

I would like to know what your COMT haplotype is. If you have raw data from 23andme or Ancestry, you can order StrateGene and it would be quite helpful:
https://www.seekinghealth.com/products/strategene-report

If you have difficulty falling asleep, that's a different story and I recommend Histamine Nutrients to support healthy onset of sleep.*

To support healthy sleep duration, I recommend Serotonin Nutrients before bed.*

I'm also thinking you would benefit from Stress Nutrients as it supports a healthy stress response - and I'd take 3 capsules in the morning with breakfast.* This has Ashwagandha in it along with other adaptogens.

Make sure you are breathing through your nose all the time unless physically exerting yourself hard.

Jennifer Platt Jun 7, 2024, 1:43 PM PDT I’m wondering if I’ve confused myself with information…Ive been taking adrenal cortrex for about 5 years…I have hashimotos which is somewhat under control but I always hit a slump in the day between 1-3, used to be super stressed (2020 bs) … my question is if I have high cortisol should I be supplementing? Ive read some articles and the symptoms of suffering with high cortisol levels and have most of them. I just want to make sure I’m not adding more into me if I’m running high. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

It's easy to get confused ;)

It depends which is why you're confused.

You may be high cortisol in the afternoon and low in the morning.

If you're a high cortisol type that experiences significant stress, you want Stress Nutrients to support a healthy response to stress.* Take 3 capsules with breakfast.

Low cortisol levels are associated with these symptoms:
If you're having difficulty waking up, or waking up way too early in the morning, get dizzy upon standing or waking up often to pee at night, then you want to take Adrenal Cortex as well on those types of mornings to support healthy cortisol levels.*

Take Adrenal Cortex AS NEEDED - not daily.

If I take Adrenal Cortex more than a few days in a row, I'm kinda cranky. I usually use it a couple days a week and I'm good.

Hello, I recently started taking Adrenal Cortex at 1/6 of a dose to extreme sensitivities in place of previous Glandulars which were too strong. I find I am okay in the morning with AC but when I take at 3pm I have huge adrenal rushes. I have HPA axis dysfunction and hypothyroid. I wondered why this might be happening in the afternoon please?

It is best to use Adrenal Cortex ONLY in the morning.

You are likely naturally spiking in the afternoons and by taking more adrenal cortex, you are making things worse.

I'd consider taking Adrenal Cortex with a protein-based breakfast in the morning.

Then, I'd take also Stress Nutrients to support a healthy HPA axis. Take the 3 capsules along with the amount of Adrenal Cortex that works well for you.

I have hashimoto's and am tired all the time. I wake up every night and have trouble getting back to sleep I think my cortisol is through the roof. Will this help me?

Your thyroid medication may need adjusting. Talk with your doctor to check your TSH, free T3, free T4, rT3 and antibodies.

Additionally, talk with your doctor to check your adrenals and cortisol levels. The DUTCH test is quite useful.

I'd look into supporting healthy sleep duration by using Serotonin Nutrients before bed.

Make sure you have a healthy protein dinner before sleep as well. Commonly, low blood sugar can spike cortisol levels and cause waking up. If you're eating many hours before bed, consider having a bit of protein an hour before bed mixed with some carbs. A few bites of chicken with rice for example may be very helpful.

If you're waking up very tired in the morning, consider Adrenal Cortex with breakfast to support healthy energy levels.*

If you're experiencing stress, consider Stress Nutrients to support a healthy response to stress.* This can be taken any time and you can take with Adrenal Cortex.

Only use Adrenal Cortex on days you need it and skip it on days you feel rested and good energy levels. Too much Adrenal Cortex may make one irritable.

Hi, I am a 44 year old female who take Armour Thyroid and had a total Thyroidectomy. I am also an active athlete who races BMX and lifts heavy multiple times a week.i had my cortisol and adrenals tested and I am barely within range on both. I noticed about four months into adding a lifting program that I am really struggling with any type of motivation or drive. I have tried the adrenal cortex before, but my endocrinologist says that I shouldn’t take it, but it seems to be the only thing that helps. The second day I took it, I did things around my house that I haven’t in months. Not sure what else to do. I really enjoy being fit and exercising, but not sure how to fix this lethargic feeling feeling. It almost feels like I have a black hole in my brain and when I take the adrenal cortex all of the lights come back on. Thank you!

I disagree with your endocrinologist.

Adrenal Cortex is very supportive for those exactly in your situation.

It's important to continue monitoring your thyroid hormones of T3, T4, rT3 and TSH and make sure they are all in line. Do not just measure TSH.

I highly recommend you also consider Pre-Workout Nutrients as well prior to working out. It's exceptional for performance. Use 30 minutes prior to exercising. You may also mix a serving in your water bottle and sip while you exercise. What I do is usually drink half a serving (1 scoop) 30 minutes prior to exercising and then I mix the 2nd scoop in my water bottle and sip that while I workout.

I'm 56 and reading that the adrenals make some of the hormones to a certain degree , like estrogen. Being post menopausal and feeling all the symptoms from lack of estrogen and progesterone, like aging bones, dry saggy skin....would adrenal cortex help support that or is there something else you would recommend?

I suspect you may need bio-identical estrogen support.

I do not have anything along these lines.

I do not think Adrenal Cortex would help with this as it's more supportive of healthy cortisol levels and healthy energy levels.

Hello, Is it ok to take adrenal cortex & stress nutrients despite being on armor thyroid?

It is ok to use both yes.

That said, please monitor your thyroid with your health professional.

You may find that your thyroid levels are adjusting based on additional support.

Keys to taking these two supplements:

  1. Adrenal Cortex: take only in the morning with breakfast (after your thyroid medication). Only take this only on days when you woke up way too early, frequently have to go pee at night, or feel very unrested in the morning.
  2. Stress Nutrients: take daily. This is an adaptogenic formulation meaning it's best used when taken daily.

In health,
Dr. Lynch

Is it safe to take with Synthroid and Cytomel?

It is safe yes.

That said, talk with your doctor about monitoring your thyroid levels.

You and your doctor may need to adjust your thyroid medications.

Only take Adrenal Cortex on days you wake up way too early, find yourself waking up to pee at night or feeling very tired upon waking.

Time zone changes are also tough and a good time to support with Adrenal Cortex.

I recommend starting with Stress Nutrients before Adrenal Cortex.

Why?

Stress Nutrients supports a healthy response to stressors.

If you're supporting healthy cortisol levels with Adrenal Cortex, it may make you more sensitive to stressors due to the cortisol.

Thus, Stress Nutrients helps balance and provides a healthy emotional response.

Take 1 serving of Stress Nutrients daily as it is an adaptogen - meaning it helps your body adapt and needs consistent use.

Adrenal Cortex only requires use intermittently otherwise too much can make one irritable.

Can this be taken while pregnant to help with adrenal fatigue?

Anytime one adjusts hormones during pregnancy requires monitoring and experience.

I recommend working with a naturopathic physician or functional medicine doctor.

That way they can prescribe it and monitor your levels of hormones.

In the meantime, I recommend these to support healthy energy levels that are safe to take during pregnancy:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 lozenge upon rising. Let it dissolve. You'll feel it fast.
  • Optimal Electrolyte Unflavored: 1 serving upon waking. Sip it. You can mix 1/2 scoop of Unflavored with 1/2 scoop of Flavored (I like Orange and Berry the most).
  • Prenatal Essentials: take 1 capsule with breakfast and 1 capsule with lunch. Splitting the serving size like this helps sustain healthy energy and mood throughout the day vs too much all in the morning.

Have a healthy pregnancy! ;)

Should we have labs drawn before starting this? You said not to take with high cortisol levels but how would we know this without labs? Anything to look for if labs aren’t the answer. Thanks!

One does need lab testing if they don't know what it feels like to have low or high cortisol.

Low cortisol symptoms:

  • dizzy upon standing
  • histamine intolerance
  • frequent urination especially at night
  • low energy
  • waking up way too early in the morning before their alarm goes off

High cortisol:

  • irritable
  • reactive
  • poor immune function
  • potentially high blood pressure
  • cannot fall asleep if high cortisol at night
  • weight gain
  • high blood sugar

I do recommend starting supporting healthy adrenals by using Stress Nutrients.

This supports ones ability to have a healthy stress response vs being overly reactive.

Adrenal Cortex should be used intermittently while Stress Nutrients used daily.

What is the difference between Adrenal Nutrients and Adrenal Cortex? What supplements would you recommend with both or either one of these for moderate malaise? Would you recommend the Dopamine supplement?

Adrenal Nutrients (now called Stress Nutrients) contains herbs and a few nutrients which may support ones ability to have a healthy response to stressors.
This is used daily.

Adrenal Cortex contains actual adrenal cortex from grass-fed cows. This may support healthy cortisol levels.
This is used intermittently on an as-needed basis in the morning upon waking (as this is usually when people have low cortisol when they are really tired)

For moderate malaise, there are a myriad of things one can use.

Here are foundational supportive nutrients that I use and recommend:

  • Glutathione Plus Lozenge: 1/2 lozenge taken in the morning immediately upon waking. Take daily.
  • Optimal Electrolyte unflavored: 1 scoop in a glass of filtered water. Sip upon waking. Take daily.
  • Multivitamin One MF: 1 capsule with a protein based breakfast (take only on days when feeling tired, skip on days you feel great in the morning.)
  • Stress Nutrients: take 1 serving daily if you're experiencing stressful events.

For additional support:

  • Dopamine Nutrients: take 1-2 capsules as needed when experiencing moments of low mood, low libido. low motivation. Add this only as needed. The supplements above are foundational.
  • Adrenal Cortex: supports healthy cortisol levels. Take 1 capsule during your new wake up time when traveling to a different time zone, when feeling really gassed in the morning and the usual foundation isn't working.

How long should I take this? Does it interact with Diabetes medication (Specifically Monjauro and long acting insulin Lantus)

One takes Adrenal Cortex with breakfast only if they are waking up feeling they need support.

On good mornings where you feel rested and ready to go, do not take it.

It is fine to take with those medications.
